Book was very slow. I like books that hook you from the beginning. Half way thru this one still wasn't very interesting. Everyone (other reviews) talked about the exciting twists toward the ending.- I disagree.. Guess it wasn't for me.
Janey has always kept to the sidelines. Her mother always encouraged that & on her deathbed she told Janey why. It seemed great timing when her husband was headhunted for a great new job. The extra money meant they could more to a very upmarket house. A new start for the family, Isaac would be able to spend more time at home & they are sure their son Rowan will soon make friends.
The new house is great- far better than their previous one although it is at the 'poorer' end of the crescent where the houses are more like mansions! Janey feels very out of place as rushes to get her son to school. In very casual clothes & no makeup she feels very out of place among the 'yummy mummies'. However doing a favour for one of them draws her into the crowd although she feels this is a bit of a mixed blessing! But soon she starts to wonder if all this is too good to be true. Isaac is secretive, one of her new friend's teenage daughter looks to be putting herself in danger. Perhaps this move has been a great mistake.
The book begins with a young girl, obviously being held prisoner being scared for her life. He story appears every so often & I couldn't work out where she fitted in. I certainly didn't guess.
Again this was what I have come to expect from K.L. Slater- a rattling good read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy for this review.
When I first saw the cover and read about this book, I thought it sounded like a perfect psychological thriller and I so wanted to love this book!
However it just didnt do it for me :(
It was obvious that all of Janey's new friends are not who they appear to be and we have yet to find out what Janey's secret is, but it didnt keep me gripped and when it did have the big reveals it made me think really? So what! There wasnt anything massively shocking and felt it was all hyped up for a bigger story than it actually was!
Disappointed as had high hopes for this book!
Little Whispers was my first book by the author and I enjoyed her writing style. Very easy to follow and I started out really liking the storyline. A little over halfway through, I found myself trying to hurry through to see how it would end. I felt like the book could have been split into two different stories and make two great books.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and to the author for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my review.
Many Thanks to the author and Netgalley for allowing me to read this book before being published in exchange for an honest review.
The start of the book got me confused all the way until the end of my reading. That girl in that room being abused...
Janey´s husband gets a new very well paid and they move to a nice house in a very posh neighbourhood. She takes their son to a exclusive school were a group of posh mothers ignore her and their children ignore her son, until she warns one of them that her car is about to get a fine because it was bad parked. Then she´s accepted in the group and her son gets on very well with their children and they get invited to the finest houses and enjoy their lives.
But clearly you could see you can´t trust them. I wouldn´t. So why would you tell one of them your deepest secret? Why would you drink so much if you are not used to it and you could tell something that could jeopardize you and your family? Be aware of the wrong friendships where nobody is what they say or they look like.
And your husband leaving very early for work and coming very late when he promised that he would work less than in his old job???? Ummmm
Although every character is unlikable, this book was hard to put it down. It was well pace and suspenseful enough to want to finish it in one sit.
I did enjoy this book, as it was a quick read, filled with suspense and questions that keep you thinking and wanting to turn the pages with eager anticipation.
3.5 stars
Little Whispers by K.L. Slater is a psychological thriller.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
When her husband Isaac gets a better paying job, Janey is thrilled that they are able to afford one of the smaller homes on prestigious Buckingham Crescent. Janey is hoping that Isaac's promise to spend more time with them will also come true. Alas, that is not to be. Janey is sure that Isaac is keeping something from her. It seems to be a rocky start at school for 8-year old Rowan as well.
However, Janey meets Tanya, one of the wealthier neighbours, who quickly takes Janey under her wing and introduces her to the other "Buckingham Moms", including Edie and Kyoko. Tanya's son Dexter also befriends Rowan, and it looks like Tanya's older daughter Angel may be a great babysitter. Janey finally feels at home, and hopes to be able to leave her troubled past behind her....but she tells her darkest secret to Tanya.
When Janey realizes Angel may have been involved in something she shouldn't, Tanya threatens to expose Janey's secret if she makes trouble for her daughter.
Sometimes it's hard to know who to trust. There is so much more happening on Buckingham Crescent than Janey knows.
My Opinions:
I have really enjoyed every book I've read by this author. This one, although good, just dragged for me. Nothing happened. I didn't like any of the characters. The writing was fine, as always, but it was just really boring.
Then I hit the 75% read mark....and it was excellent. However, that is way too long to be disappointed in a book. So, although it ended up being good...it was too late for me.
It won't stop me from reading more by this author though!
I feel this book is a 3 1/2 star read. It took ages to get into the story and the plot seemed really rushed at the end. There were some good characters. It can definitely feel as if you are on your own at the school gate. Women can be so unkind to each other. I think I would have enjoyed this story more if more was made of the ending and some of the earlier parts were shorter.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
Janey Markham is really excited for moving with her family to Buckingham Cresent, smartest address in a desirable suburban town.
With the shift & husband's new job with high pay she is looking forward to a new life ahead. Lately she'd been under stress, caring for her mother during final stages of her life & on deathbed her mother shares a very shocking secret. .
While trying to fit in the new place Janey is really worried that she might not be accepted in the group of glamorous moms but soon she gets befriended by Tanya,a kind, friendly & mother of 2 & not long she is into the group. She loves Tanya's company so much that one day while just chilling she confines her darkest secret to Tanya.
Things changes when she notices strange behaviour of her husband and also spots Tanya's 15yr old daughter at diff. places during school hrs with people she shouldn’t be with. Soon she realises what a mistake she'd made by spitting the secret to Tanya.
Overall this book was a wonderful read. Just that sometimes the story felt slow but it's worth as you keep guessing about that one secret which gets revealed almost in the end with the main thrills and other mysteries.
Janey’s husband started a new job that allows them to move into an exclusive development. Janey quickly sees that the moms in this neighborhood are very close, and Janey is accepted into the clique fairly quickly. Tanya appears to be the leader of the pack, and Janey becomes close friends with Tanya. Meanwhile, Janey’s husband Issac is becoming increasingly preoccupied and distant. During an afternoon of drinking and relaxing in Tanya’s hot tub and after a few drinks, Janey reveals a deeply hidden and protected secret to Tanya. Shortly thereafter, Janey notices that Tanya’s daughter Angel is in trouble when Janey approaches Tanya about Angel, Tanya doesn’t want to hear about it, and is in extreme denial.
There were some “twists” towards the end, but overall I just couldn’t get into this book. The women were petty and none of the characters were likable. I have enjoyed some of K. L. Slater’s other works, but this one fell flat for me. Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Love .K.L. Slater books and this one is no exception!
Janey Markham's life has changed at the flick of a switch and she can't quite believe it. Within a few days, her husband has secured a new job with a fantastic salary and she has moved into a fabulous new home in swanky Buckingham Crescent. Just one thing takes the shine off of all this.....the secret her mother revealed on her deathbed a few month's beforehand. Along with all of these changes, Janey is trying to settle her son into his new school and getting to know and fit in with her new neighbours. During a boozy hot tub session with one of her neighbours, Tanya, whom she has gotten to know well, she lets out that deep secret. And well let's just say Janey's life is turned upside down and inside out from this moment on!
I would highly recommend this if you are looking for a good psychological thriller with surprises galore! Five stars!
Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture and KL Slater for the ARC
A move to a new place is always a little unsettling, especially if you are hiding an unpleasant secret from your past.
When Jenny Markham, moves to a new town with her husband Isaac and son Rowan, its to start life with a focus on themselves and less of work stress. But Jenny doesn't see this happening. Slowly she makes friends with Tanya, Edie and Ky and they form a clique. Jenny finds herself drawn to a close friendship with Tanya and in a drunken moment reveals her secret to her. Meanwhile she feels Issac is hiding things from her and is also acting strange. She uncovers series of lies that is the real reason for their move to West Bridgford. Whether Jenny's secret will be the unravelling of her life in her new town or will she face her past and make peace with it is what brings the story to an end.
Well paced and enjoyed every moment of the book.
At first it was a bit of a struggle to but when i did I FLEW through it. Definitely enjoyed it and would recommend it. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read the book.
Another fantastic thriller. I have read several books from this author and they never disappoint. They always keep you gripped and on the edge of your seat.
Would highly recommend to psychological thrillers fans.
I didn't think K. L. Slater could top the last brilliant book, The Apartment. Well, I was wrong! Slater knocks another one out of the park with her story of a family suddenly enriched by the husband's (Isaac's) new job His signing bonus is large enough for them to get out of debt, buy a house in an upscale neighborhood, and put their son in a quality school.
As Isaac's wife Janey becomes a part of the "inner circle" of influential moms at her son's school, her husband warns her not to share the family's business, especially not to talk about his work. Because of Isaac's long hours at his job and Janey's growing isolation, she slips and shares something she shouldn't have with her neighbor, Tanya. Things start to spiral out of control when Janey spots Tanya's daughter in town when she should be in school, and then there's an issue at the school.
You will guess that there are so many people keeping secrets, but the way they are revealed was masterful!
This book definitely lived up to it’s unputdownable hype, especially at the half way mark. Think Desperate House Wives meets Big Little Lies, but with a twisting past.
.
I actually yelled at this book more than a couple times, in a good way though. There’s this ongoing mystery about the past of the main character, Janey; revolving around her recently passed mother and a box that hold all the secrets. Everyone knows what’s in the box but the reader; but it really pushed me through the story. And that’s just one part of the tangled web.
.
It took me a little to get in to the story, I enjoy first person narratives, because I alway feel more attached to the character and their progression; but Janey remained a little naive to a lot, but she’s been living in the mind set that her life is getting better and how can she keep it going.
.
The interjections of a past abduction seemed out of place while reading, making me wonder what it had to do with anything, but it all gets revealed and totally wasn’t expecting that twist. Which gave it a bump in my rating.
.
A great read for those that like thrillers revolving around close knit, social elites in posh communities, with dark pasts.
Little Whispers was another great book that hooked me in from the first few pages. Struggled to put it down and devoured this book in one sitting. As usual for K L Slater some great twists in the book. Looking forward to the next book.
This book is a must read by anyone who loves a great thriller. I admit that I took my time getting into it. For some reason, I haven't been able to focus on books during this "shelter at home" time. Once I read the first 50 pages, it was one that I couldn't put down. I read the second half in one sitting. The e fire book centers around Jane y, a married mother with one son. Her husband is in IT and lands a job that moves his family to a small house in a posh neighborhood. Janey and her son make friends with the mothers and children at the school . The story continues with suspicious happenings. Is her husband being tr uthful? Are her new friends really friends? What secrets is Janet hiding? Little whispers has all the elements I love, short chapters with good leads to keep you reading. Characters you l ove and ones you don't. And best of all, the twists you don't see coming! Bravo!
One thing that I most definitely do not miss now that my children are adults is the daily gauntlet that is the school run, the groups of mums standing around gossiping and giggling amongst themselves and the horrible paranoid feeling that they are talking about you. Feeling torn between wanting to be one of them and getting away as fast as possible. The feeling of non inclusion is even stronger when you have just moved to a new area just like Janey and her family. So I could fully understand her desire to be accepted by glamourous Tania and her group of yummy mummies especially considering Janey's isolated, mysterious past and her feelings of being abandoned by her husband Isaac despite his promises that things would get better once they had moved into their new home. Although I thought that her interactions with poor young Jasper were sweet and did she go up a little bit in my estimations by the end of the story, I can't say that I thought Janey was a very likeable character for various reasons. Actually I can't say that I thought most of the adults were very likeable including Isaac although I did change my mind about a couple of them by the time I got to the conclusion. You couldn't help feeling a lot of sympathy for the poor kids who had found themselves lumbered with this group of pampered parents. Interspersed throughout the book and the parts that were my favourite was chapters that were voiced from the perspective of a eighteen year old girl called Susan who was being held captive by a young woman and a older man but who was she and how did she fit into the story?
To be honest, it did take a while for this story to grab my attention, it wasn't fast paced but it did eventually intrigue me enough to encourage me to stick with it until the end. As readers have come to expect with K.L.Sister's thrillers it was well written and tightly plotted, the characters were vivid and realistic, some of them were not who they appeared to be and the story had a satisfactory conclusion.
fans of this author will love this new offering.
Once her husband is offered a too good to be true new job with higher salary and more regular working hours Janey Markham is feeling positive that family life is taking a positive turn after the passing of her mother and a deathbed confession. A move to a new house on a wealthy estate in Nottingham and her acceptance into a group of yummy mummies on the school playground seems to be the icing on the cake until she realises not everything is as it seems and her trust in her new friends is unfounded.
Many thanks to the publishers and netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was the first book from KL Slater that I have read and I have to say unfortunately I don’t feel any urgent pull to read more by her!
The beginning of the book was a good start and I enjoyed following the story of Janey, her husband Isaac and their 8 year old son Rowan, as they moved to a new home and town.
Janey’s husband Isaac gained a promotion which meant an upgrade in lifestyle and moving from an average home in a lower class area to a larger detached property in the more Middle Class, affluent ‘Buckingham Crescent’.
Even though it was a big move for Janey and her family, their new home was still one of the smaller, ‘more affordable’ properties on the street and appeared to be be surrounded by huge mansions!
Janey initially struggled to fit in with her new ‘friends’, as it was abundantly clear she wasn’t one of the elite members of the mum groups outside of school or in her street.
I disliked these new female friends immediately and didn’t trust any of them. It felt very much like a cross between ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘The Real Housewives of Cheshire’.
The ending was a big disappointment for me. The ‘big twist’ just didn’t feel like enough of a twist, it totally missed the mark and left me feeling a bit meh!
I also had a few issues with the editing (not sure if these will have been sorted in the final edit before the book is released).
One was where a 14 year old child was left behind after their mother died, aged 20...... what????
The other was in Chapter 25 when Janey mentioned her husband Issac had been in his new job for a few months, but then in the next paragraph she was referring to still having lots of unpacking to do and getting her house straight, but it was only to be expected because they’d only been there a week. Yet we know from earlier in the book that Isaac started his new job when they moved into their new home!!! The timelines just didn’t add up in either of these scenarios!
I liked the short chapters (I love short chapters) and it was definitely a quick, easy read.
I really wish I could have rated this book a bit higher, but it just missed the mark for me and left me disappointed by the ending.
