I just found a new author! I have been reading so many poorly written books that it’s a breath of fresh air to read this book. The character development was intense, everyone was so fleshed out and detailed, even the secondary characters! The story had mystery, suspense and I couldn’t put it down! Well done!
Sometimes an unexpected storm leaves behind violence of the human kind.
Deputy Mattie Cobb, an officer in the Sheriff's K-9 department and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife, has paired with Glenna Dalton, district wildlife manager. There's been a terrible rainstorm caused by an irritable El Nino. Both young women are out inspecting the damage left behind near Hanging Falls. Mattie walks alongside Robo her highly trained German Shepherd and Glenna hikes with Moose, her dog.
It's Robo who quickly picks up the scent of something that sends him into high alert. The raging creek waters reveal a body of a man lodged in between some fallen logs. Mattie and Robo jump in to retrieve the man only to find the lifeless remains. But on his chest is carved the word "PAY".......a curious memento left behind by the killer. The Sheriff's Department makes the long trek to bring the man back down for identification.
Margaret Mizushima presents the sixth book in her Timber Creek series and each one just gets better and better. Never fear. Hanging Falls reads as a standalone. Mizushima, like surround sound, fills in character relevance and essential story bits from the earlier books. We find Mattie still letting her guard down slowly in her relationship with Cole Walker, the town vet. And there's a side thread of Mattie's newly found family members from California to round out the storyline.. Add in a large religious group who've recently moved into the Timber Creek area and two ornery brothers who have taken issue with the new residents.
Hanging Falls is a solid police procedural with a scenic atmosphere of the Rocky Mountains. Be assured that this is not just a "doggy" story in the making. Mizushima allows us insight into the fine-tuned workings of deputies and their well-trained canines. As a vet herself, she knows the remarkable relationship between human and dog. Bravo, Margaret Mizushima. Another winner.
I received a copy of Hanging Falls through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Crooked Lane Books and to Margaret Mizushima for the opportunity.
I always enjoy getting back together with Deputy Mattie Cob and her wonderful K9 partner, Robo. This book was both disturbing and heartwarming with a focus on family. Timber Creek vet Cole Walker and Mattie have finally acknowledged their love and Mattie feels very comfortable with Cole’s family - 16 year old Angie, 9 year old Sophie and the indomitable Irish housekeeper, Mrs Gibbs. Mattie also gets to have a reunion with some of her biological family after nearly 30 years, which provided some very emotional scenes. In addition, a polygamous religious community has moved to Timber Creek and the family arrangements are questionable and give cause for concern.
At the same time the Sheriff’s department is investigating two murders that have taken place on the trail up to the scenic but rugged Hanging Falls. The prevailing El Niño conditions - increased snow melt and frequent thunderstorms have made conditions on the trails treacherous. There are plenty of suspects but very little hard evidence.
This series is so enjoyable and the characters are so well fleshed out, including the dogs, they are characters in their own right. The ghosts of Mattie’s past have calmed down a lot and she is more evenly poised. I hope Margaret Mizushima keeps writing these wonderful stories. While there is always some danger and intrigue the stories are so character driven that they almost feel like members of your own family. Many thanks to Netgalley, Crooked Lane Books and Margaret Mizushima for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.
I'm a big fan of Mattie Cobb and her K-9 dog Robo, and Hanging Falls, book number six in the Timber Creek K-9 series did not disappoint. As a matter of fact, I like this book best of all because we got a deeper glimpse into Mattie's background and met new family members I believe Mattie had thought she'd never see again. This was a heartwarming development for a character whose backstory has been pretty rough, leading to Mattie's problem forming new relationships with the folks in her life that she wants to love. The mystery plot is excellent, as always, and the writing topnotch. This whole series is highly recommended.
The K-9 series features Robo as a brilliantly, intuitive service animal. Robo is a large powerful GSD and is treated with respect while carefully kept to his manners. His handler, Mattie Cobb works with local law enforcement and in this narrative finds a DB (dead body) washed downstream and caught in a tree snag off the trail in the flood of the high country she and wildlife manager, Glenna Dalton, are scouting. The wild mountains of Colorado and Timber Creek are dangerous and unpredictable, but this is obviously a homicide.
Investigating the death of the young man on the mountain, they discover a new "family" has moved to their area, a cult. There is a subsequent death which Mattie and Robo also discover and all leads continue to swerve back to the cult where there appears to harbor a smoldering discontent.
Mizushima's books always run a strong sub-plot and this story dealing with the issue of family pushes her backstory closer to the foreground; NOT losing sight of the main mystery. Mattie has been contacted by her long-lost sister and nervously awaits a visit by Julia and her grandmother. As she was raised in the foster care system, she is hoping to finally answer questions about her abduction and the disappearance of her mother. (Oh, yes, this is a thread that will weigh heavily in the next episode.)
Meanwhile, the duo-protagonists, Mattie and Robo, bring the mystery to a successful but nail-biting conclusion. I love that dog! Each entry in the series can work as a standalone, but you might wish to catch up on this remarkable series and go back to Book 1. Which one did I love best? The one I was then reading.
Receiving this digital download free from the publisher and NetGalley did not affect my opinion of the book and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read and review. Anyone who enjoys a good mystery with an immersive, atmospheric setting, impressive animals, and their skillful handlers will find this series fully engaging and entertaining.
Hanging Falls by Margaret Mizushima is the 6th book in the Timber Creek K-9 series. Deputy Mattie and he K-9 Robo. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of this book and the writing style of this author is vivid and entertaining. I loved the references to the scenery and it made me feel like I was there with the characters. Ask the characters are very likable. Highly recommend this book and series!
This is honestly one of my favorite K-9 related series. Well written, the characters grow on you, especially Robo. This book goes a little more into Mattie's past so be prepared for a shock.
"Hanging Falls" is a K9-detective mystery/suspense. It's the sixth in a series. You can follow this book without reading the previous ones, and this book didn't spoil the previous mysteries. This series just keeps getting better. It's another satisfying, suspenseful mystery with the Timber Creek police (and friends).
Robo is a talented, well-trained working dog, and it's always fun to see him "on the job" with Mattie. The main characters were engaging, had depth and complexity, and reacted realistically to events. The crime was a clue-based mystery, and Mattie was involved in finding clues and interviewing suspects. Though whodunit was on the suspect list, it wasn't obvious whodunit until the last clues were uncovered at the end. Suspense was mainly created from physical danger to those who had witnessed suspicious activity or clues.
There were no sex scenes. The was occasional use of bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this exciting mystery.
While this is the 6th in the Timber Creek K-9 series, Hanging Falls reads well as a stand alone. Margaret Mizushima has given us the well developed community of Timber Creek, Colorado and populated it with some very original characters that we have watched grow and develop as the series progresses. This story centers on the discovery and investigation of a man's body found floating in the lake at the base of Hanging Falls. Mattie Cobb, with the help of her German Shepard Robo, must sort through the many clues and suspects to find the killer. There are several story threads that weave into the main story to keep the tension building and the questions coming. The mystery of Mattie's life story that started in the first book continues in this one, bridging the series together. The over all feel of the book is an original thriller that will hold your interest from the 1st chapter to the last.
Another good book in the series. However, I would recommend that those who haven't read the other books in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series to start from the beginning with "Killing Trail".
I am reviewing this book for the autumn edition of Mystery Scene magazine please buy issue 165 available August 15th to read my review.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the main characters and how they interact. The mystery is interesting and I liked how the investigation went. Its fast paced. I really liked the dogs. #HangingFalls #NetGalley
HANGING FALLS by Margaret Mizushima is the sixth book in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. This has become one of my favorite police procedural series. It is set in and around a small town in the mountains of Colorado.
While this is the sixth book in the series and there are references to events and people that were in previous ones, the novel still worked well as a standalone. In this one Deputy Mattie Cobb, her canine partner Robo, local district wildlife manager, Glenna Dalton and her Rhodesian ridgeback are hiking to Hanging Falls. Heavy rains have impacted the trail and the falls. Once they get to the falls, they find a body floating in the water below the falls. With this start, the book is off and running.
Mattie and her K-9 partner Robo and the other members of the sheriff’s department begin an investigation that has a lot of twists and turns and some red herrings. As usual, Maggie’s boyfriend, veterinarian Cole Walker, helps with the investigation. The characters are appealing and the writing is compelling, engaging and entertaining. The plot is clever, intriguing and very realistic.
I was immediately drawn into the investigation and the lives of Mattie, Robo, Cole and many of the other residents of Timber Creek, Colorado. I enjoyed visiting with my relatively new friends. I believe the fact that the author and her husband run a veterinary clinic and live on a small ranch in Colorado helped with the visualization of the area. Themes include police investigations, murder, a religious cult, horse training, family relationships and dynamics, changing relationships and much more. There are some serious themes in this novel that I won’t reveal due to spoilers.
This is the second book that I have read about Mattie, Robo and Cole; and I can’t wait to read the other books in this series. If you are a dog lover or just enjoy an engaging and suspenseful mystery, I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
Many thanks to Crooked Lane Books, Margaret Mizushima and Net Galley for a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
I love this series!! This book was full of excitement, drama, suspense and a murder mystery to solve. This is a book you don't want to miss. Mattie and Robo will keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. Thank you Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley for the ARC copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
First off I want to say I was HIGHLY ANTICIPATING this book. Like, checking netgalley regularly to see if there were ARCs and to see if I could get one.
(obvs disclaimer: I got one, thank you to the publisher and netgalley for offering me this ARC for review)
And that is a huge reason why I rounded up my 3.5 to a 4.
There was something about this book that felt different. I've sat on this review for about a week because I was trying to figure out what it was. After a while, I decided it was what was the stakes.
Most of the last murders have felt more personal to the players of the series. I get that we can't kill off entire communities but the weaving of growing the relationships with the murders and how the two complement one another.
In this book everything felt so separate. The romance over here, his family over there, her family being put off to the end magically. There's pieces together but it feels like when those pieces happen they're put there specifically to create the overlap instead of all the organic growth of these issues and connections in the last books.
I'm really hoping we get the overlapping depth I've come to expect in love in this series in the next book.
That being said we get more insight into Mattie (we miss with Stella-girl-time in this one) and her views on laws and if people are being hurt V if their not. It was really interesting and I think insightful to grow her character.
Really looking forward to the next book! I can't wait to see where all the family and relationships go as Mattie and Robo save the day.
This is another installment in the story of Mattie Cobb, a police officer in the Colorado mountains, who with her K-9 Robo hunts for clues when they are searching for people or bodies. This is a story of one of their cases but also added to the mix is a visit from some of her birth family that have a lot of missing information from Mattie’s childhood. These stories are wonderful and I’m always waiting anxiously for the next one to come out. This is one of my favorite series!
The storyline is interesting as well because this installment contains a cultish religious group that has settled nearby to try to escape persecution and be accepted.
I recommend this book to all along with the first 5 books of the series. You will not regret it.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
How is it possible not to love Hanging Falls and the rest of the series? The characters have depth to them and as a GSD lover, Robo is irresistable. The plot is well crafted with multiple layers, which makes it more fun to read and it adds depth to the book.
I would highly recommend this book for contemporary crime lovers, especially if they in addition love dogs and/or horses.
“Hanging Falls” is the sixth installment of Margaret Mizushima’s Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. While out on an exploratory mission in the mountains, Deputy Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner, Robo, along with Glenna Dalton, the local district wildlife manager and her dog, Moose, stumble across a body submerged in the water under Hanging Falls. The suspects include a religious cult recently moved into the area with suspicious activity among the group concerning the children. The local veterinarian, Cole Walker, assists Mattie and the Sheriff’s department to help solve the crime. Adding to the story line, Cole’s teenage daughter, Angie, is having a difficult time accepting the relationship between Mattie and her father. Mattie has recently discovered her sister and grandmother in California and had a vacation planned to visit. The newly discovered crime postpones her trip to California; instead, her sister and grandmother come to Colorado. While Mattie deals with work, she learns more about her family and that fateful night when she was abducted at the young age of two years old. The combination of present-day crimes, family issues, and mysteries from Mattie’s past, gives these books depth and intrigue. I highly recommend this book as a fast-paced, exciting mystery that is hard to put down.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Mattie and her k-9 Robo was scouting damage trails near Hanging Falls when they discover a body floating near edge of the lake.
As they investigate there are new people in town they appear to be polygamists then you have a man claiming to be farrier there a numbers of suspects especially when a another dead body surface. While this is going on she also dealing with her relationship with Cole and his daughter Angie and preparing a reunion with her sister and grandmother that she hasn’t seen since she was two. I love this series especially the relationship between Mattie and Robo this could be a great tv series is it’s wrong that although I like Cole I wish Mattie was a lesbian or at least bi.
Mattie is a K9 officer in her small Colorado town who works with her German Shepherd, Robo, There are some new people who have moved into a local farm, and they appear to be polygamists. When there are two murders, Mattie and Robo investigate, despite the fact that she was supposed to be on vacation. Are the new people really just trying to practice their religion, or is something more sinister going on? Did the men on the neighboring farm know more about the murder victim than they are admitting? And what about the man who claims to be a farrier? If you are a dog lover (or any reader who enjoys a good mystery with likable characters) I think you would enjoy this novel, which is part of a series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but reading the books in order will give more insight into the characters, especially Mattie. Thanks to Netgalley and to the publisher for this ARC.
