This is a fun story and a good mystery. Cat and Gilley decide to help find the killer of Detective Shepherd's wife. Cat is sure she has found a connection to some recent murders. Add in a cursed little person, who is very heroic, with a hot air balloon accident and some amorous alpacas, and you get a fun story. But, it isn't all fun and games. Cat and Gilley have to face a killer. They just aren't always sure who the bad guy is. Things aren't always what they seem.
Loved this book! I adore this series! I love Cat and Gilley. I can't get enough of this crime-solving duo!
So the main character acts a little too dumb to live sometimes but overall, I enjoyed this book just as much as the firs tin the series. I'm going to wait and read the third one until I pass final judgment but I definitely want to keep reading the series and am interested to see what Catherine does in the next book.
After finally launching her new business and surviving the Angel of Death, Cat has hit a bump in the road. The problem? Her life coaching business is not taking off like she thought it would. However, things are looking up because she just got a new client who is convinced he’s cursed. Not sure how this applies to her skill set, she’s determined to help while she dives into a new murder mystery that has her two love interests staring daggers at each other.
I was pretty excited to start this book only for my excitement to die in its tracks early on. Unfortunately, Cat’s new client is convinced he was cursed by a Roma woman while he was still a fetus. The “g” slur was used as well, so it was rather disheartening to read such a prejudicial and stereotypical characterization in a book coming from an author I’ve been following for years. To top things off, this character also believes that he was born a little person because of this curse, which did not sit well with me at all. This all occurs right at the beginning of the book and it really made me not want to continue reading. However, I did agree to read this book in exchange for an honest review when I got it from netgalley, so I forged ahead and here we are.
I had a really hard time getting into the story for the above reasons on top of just being bored. After two books, I am now sure that I liked Cat much better as a supporting character because she’s just not interesting enough to keep my attention from wandering. I keep finding myself wishing that there was a different protagonist leading this story, so I don’t think this is something that will change for me however long this series runs.
I do think that the murder mystery was truly wild. It reminded me why I’ve almost always loved Victoria Laurie’s books. She’s got a way with her mystery plots that always keeps me coming back. They’re entertaining and sometimes quite complex. I truly enjoyed the mystery aspect of this cozy once it got rolling, which is also when I got into the story. At that point, I really wanted to see what was going to be revealed next. I can honestly say that I was not disappointed with how the mystery plot concluded. It was unexpected, wild, and entertaining while gut wrenching at the most crucial moments.
All in all, this is the final book in the series for me. Cat as a protagonist just does not hold my attention, so I will not continue to follow her adventures. Plus, I’m disappointed with Laurie’s usage of a prejudicial characterization for her cursed storyline.
Wow this was an unexpectedly wild ride. This book was definitely more dramatic, action packed and downright dangerous than the first. I really enjoyed this second installment, but it seemed less cozy than I was expected, maybe because of the dramatic story surrounding Cat's new client AND all the mafia stuff. I love some good spy drama and there was definitely a complicated web of covert happenings in this book that I don't want to spoil, but I can say there were many twists and surprises.

I really like the main characters Cat and Gilley. Their relationship with each other and also their personality quirks had me constantly smiling. They are strong, but also lean on each other so much. Their snooping skills are great and I enjoyed watching them detect and try to help others even when it's so dangerous.

The ending, wow. High drama and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I had to slow down just to digest all the revelations and put together the pieces in my head. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more in the series.
Cat Cooper is bold, rich, and happily settled in the Hamptons in a palatial home, with her assistant and best friend in a guest house on her property. Her two sons are on vacation with her ex-husband, so she has plenty of free time and couple of suitors to hang out with.
These things don't help her in her new life coach business, but they do help keep her busy. Chechen mafiosi, a single life coaching client who was born under a curse, rambunctious alpacas, and plenty of dangerous sleuthing fill her days, while romance fills her nights.
The story is implausible, with a very lengthy and contrived rescue ending. However, the characters are intriguing and the dialogue is fun. An enjoyable read in spite of its flaws.
"To Coach a Killer" is a cozy mystery about life coach Catherine (Cat) Cooper and her best friend and office manager Gilley. Cat, a divorced mother of two, has two current love interests - one is a detective, and the other happens to be entwined with the mafia. Gilley fully supports Cat's dating life following her divorce, and he encourages her to see both men.
The story takes place in East Hampton, and the scenery and multi-million dollar homes make for an interesting setting. Cat's client Willem, who believes he is cursed, is an entertaining secondary character and I grew to like him a lot.
As usual, though this is the 2nd book in The Life Coach Mystery series, it's the only one I've read. I have a horrible habit of reading cozy mysteries out of order. Normally that's fine, but I found this book gave away too much about the plot of "Coached to Death," its predecessor. I not only know the basic plot, but I know who was killed, why the person was killed, who was wrongfully suspected, the real killer, and the method of the murder. I find that disappointing because now I don't really see a reason to read the first book. I'm not one of those "read the last chapter first" people so there would be no mystery in it for me.
Once I got used to the idea of Gilley being in a different setting from the Ghouls series I wound up liking this book. I really liked Cat as a main character and there were plenty of twists and turns. This is darker than a cozy mystery but so much darker that a cozy mystery reader wouldn’t enjoy it.
What happens when your client claims that he was cursed and your bad boy love interest seems to be involved in a string of murders? This is a fast suspenseful read with a very unusual hero in the end.
Great read!
This was a great cozy mystery read. I loved the main characters and how they worked together to solve not one, but multiple, murders. Cat is a life coach who is spending time with two different men, and her friend Gilley is her assistant who is waiting the return of his better half. The plot was filled with twists and turns and I stayed up late to find out whodunnit. The setting was well-described and I was brought back to the times I spent there. I can't wait to read the next installment. I received an advanced reader's copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Catherine Cooper and her assistant Gilley are back and settling into their relatively new business as life coaches. Their newest client may just be their most eccentric yet but with business less than booming the pair cannot afford to be picky. Cat does her best, with some assistance from Gilley, to help their new client who strongly believes he is cursed and that bad things will occur each time he enters a new place for the first time. Skeptical at first, Cat and Gilley jump into action after a fire starts in their office building and a hot air balloon nearly takes Cat out at the beach. Is this man really cursed or is their something else at play? Cat is also busy looking into the death of detective Steve Shepard's ex wife and strongly believes that both Steve and Mak, who has possible ties to the mob, may have a connection to the murder. As she delves deeper into the murder, the line between good and evil quickly blurs and Cat is not sure who to trust.
The follow up to Coached to Death is a fast paced, wild ride, that draws you in from the first page. The dialogue is witty and sharp flowing freely between the characters and driving the pace of the story forward. Victoria Laurie is a master at tying together multiple, seemingly disparate story lines into one complex, overarching story. The side story featured in this newest release features a blast from the past that fans of the author's previous ghost hunters series are sure to enjoy. The mystery itself is complex, with several surprising twists and turn that will have readers debating who is good and bad to the very satisfying end. I highly recommend this book, along with the first in the series, to those looking for a fast paced, expertly written mystery with plenty of wit and intrigue.
The book drew me in immediately because the dialogue and plot were easy to follow. I haven’t read the first book and at no point was I confused because the author did a great job recapping what happened in the previous book and how things in this book tied together.
It was a quick read that was surprisingly funny and intriguing. The side story was also fun and I liked how it tied into her previous book series, as well as the main plot of this book. Never in my life did I think I would read about a wild alpaca orgy, but man… did I laugh.
The romance was also fun, but not overly done. The last 6 chapters were fast-paced and I could not read fast enough. It was a very high stakes situation and I felt my internal monologue screaming into the raging winds or whispering to try and not be heard.
My only confusion is the title. I thought she was going to be life coaching the killer, but instead she coaches the cursed man while trying to find a killer.
Overall, I enjoyed it and I am intrigued enough to continue on with the series.
This is the second book in the series and I can sum up my thoughts in one word: Wow!
This book took me on a wild ride. It was a thrilling whodunit with great characters.
I look forward to reading the next in the series.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
If you’re a fan of Victoria’s work you will love this new Cat & Gilley installment. Just like all of her other books this one will keep you turning the pages in anticipation. Cat and Gilley’s relationship is one of the best parts of this series.
To Coach a Killer is an entertaining and well written mystery. I enjoyed the fast paced plot and and the characters. Great addition to the series and I look forward to reading more books in the series. I received an arc from the publisher and this is my unbiased review.
I loved it! Cat and Gilley are the perfect matchup of characters from this author's other amazing series. Gilley is a riot as always and Cat we get to learn more about in each new book. As a life coach she finds answers for her clients and whatever other crisis she stumbles on. These mysteries always end with an unexpected jaw drop. I'm eager for the next book to find out if both of the men she's been interested in will still be there.
This is the second in the Life Coach series by Victoria Laurie. Thanks to NetGalley I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy. This book had me laughing out loud so much my kids had to have me explain! I was also on the edge of my seat and could barely put the book down wanting to know what will happen next. Laurie is masterful with bringing storylines together to a very satisfying end! It’s always great being with Gilley and Cat. I highly recommend this book! It’s a perfect summer read and very escapist. I can’t wait for the next one!
I loved this second book in Victoria Laurie's Cat Cooper series, largely because of the way it moved forward. I am not fond of being strung along, seldom having resolutions or growth of the characters in a series. This was so satisfyingly the opposite. Cat and Gilley make a terrific detective duo, and the surrounding cast of characters are wonderful. I can't wait for more.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
This is the second book in the Life Coach Mystery series. I've read all the Laurie books in the ghost hunter and psychic eye series, so I was looking forward to more books from her. The first one in the series was great, and this book was even better. The characters are strong and very compelling, and the plot had enough twists to make the book fun to read.
I highly recommend this book, 4 stars!
Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In the newest in Victoria Laurie’s To Coach a Killer, Cat Cooper continues with her quest to establish herself as a life coach but will she and her sidekick (aka assistant and friend) Gilley be able to survive her new client’s curse? Torn between Detective Steve Shepherd and the mysterious Maks Grinkov while trying to solve the murder of Shepherd’s wife, it doesn’t seem as though her could be any more complex.
This book has a quirky and fun cast of characters and a plot that twists and turns with every page. If you are looking for an entertaining beach read, give this book a try. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy.
