The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea by Kerrelyn Sparks was fantastic!
This was my favorite book of the Embraced series and is the story of Maeve & Brody. If you haven't read the series, start at the beginning and read in order. If you have read the rest of the series, what are you waiting for! Kerrelyn Sparks did a fabulous job of wrapping the series up with a perfect ending and she also wove into the story the prelude to a new series!
Kerrelyn Sparks created a fun, unique & wonderfully entertaining series in the world of Aerthlan. I for one can't wait to read the next book, for that we can see where the newest journey leads us all too, in this ever expanding embraced world.
Maeve is feeling a but down, all her sisters are queens now and she is feeling a bit left out. You see each sister has met the love of their lives and have gone on to reign over their own kingdoms. There is also the fact that her friend Brody hasn't been seen for two months, she misses him and is worried over what might have happened to him. She decides she must have an adventure and figure out where he is.
Brody is off on a mission to figure out who the rest of the Circle of Five are and where a secret army of magic users is located. When the identity of is of the Circle comes to his attention he knows he must confront who it is and why they are a part of such a thing. He soon learns he needs.to disguise himself so he can infiltrate an island that seems to be the heart of the problem.
Maeve and Brody end up meeting during their adventures and the two must band together to turn things from wrong to right. With so much.adversity will the two be able to set things right and win in the end? Will the love each feels for the other be triumphant or will it ruin them in the end?
The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea is a very enjoyable book by Kerrelyn Sparks. The story line is unique and very interesting with a great cast of characters.
Thanks NetGalley!
This is the final book in a series. I read it as a stand alone, and would recommend that you actually start at the beginning of the series. Maeve, our heroine, has four adoptive sisters, and their stories are told in the previous books. This also closes out a bigger story arc. I think I would have like this story more if I'd had the background of the previous stories. I'm sure I would have also had previous glimpses of Maeve and Brody which might have given their character a bit more depth for me.
I really enjoyed all the action and movement in the story. There is a lot of creativity with different magical powers that was fun. I also like the bigger adventure/fantasy story. I had a hard time connecting to Maeve and Brody. I think a trigger for me is when characters withhold information for the good of another character and it becomes a part of the plot. I'm not a fan of people thinking they know what's better for others and it gets in the way of the story for me because I find it patronizing and then I think the characters are immature. That said, if you are looking for a fantasy adventure story, this might fit the bill. I"d love to see this as a movie.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea by Kerrelyn Sparks is book Two in the Enbraced by Magic Series and book 5 in the Embraced Series. This is the story of Maeve and Brody who if like me you have been reading the other books we are finally getting their story. Reading the other books did add to my enjoyment of this one but I do feel you can make it a standalone book if you wish to do so. Maeve is the younger 'sister' in the Embraced sisters who is now out to get her story since her sister have all now settle down and found their happiness. Brody has been cursed which makes him only able to stay in his human form for just a few hours. Brody is out to break the curse which leads to him and Maeve start to really explore their feelings. This has been such a magical series and I love this author's writing.
Although I did not read the first, this second part I enjoyed it a lot!
This story has the characteristic of a serene, simple, measured reading that I did not feel the lack of not having read its first installment too much, on the contrary it focuses on characters that although they appear in his first book in this second has their own story, an entertaining story that instantly grabs you and you want to know what else can happen in this fantastic world.
It was my reading at night and every time I took it I felt a nice feeling when I finished chapter after chapter. Simple straightforward and to the point.
Brody and Maeve gave us hope in The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea that love would find a way to each other no matter the obstacles.
The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea, book five and the last installment of The Embraced series tells the story of Maeve, our fourth sister from the Isle of Moon who has yet to find her true love that the telling stones provided. Brody, our shifter, is out looking for the witch who cursed him to shift into any creature for most of the day except for two hours. Both are looking for something that they don’t realize in each other and together.
I gave The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea four stars as I enjoyed Brody and Maeve’s story. We get multiple glimpses throughout each book of who Brody is as a shifter, who we have primarily seen him as a dog, but this book shows new sides of him that we are learning. Maeve’s powers also let her shift and through shifting, Brody and Maeve formed a deeper bond, even if Maeve might call Brody a certain name from time to time to get his attention. They were a really cute couple and I could see the need of how much they want each other throughout each line.
Their connection was amazing as you could see the chemistry from the past books shine through and the want they both portray is clear, but, I found that even though I enjoyed reading about them, I do wish that their relationship was slightly more developed. I found their connection believeable but I felt like their relationship wasn’t making me want more as I continued to read like I felt for the other books. I think the plot line however, combining both Brody’s life and Maeve’s life was fascinating and was a twist that I was not expecting, but I wish that their relationship as a whole could have been a bit more interesting and captivating.
As a whole, the book was quite enjoyable and I did enjoy seeing Brody and Maeve come together. Their past friendship made their relationship much cuter and had some depth to it and I enjoyed reading the way they finally gave into their needs and fell for each other.
Thank you again to NetGalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Fantastic end to the series!
Oh, I didn’t want to read Maeve’s story. I knew this would be the end of the series and I loved this fantasy world so much! But, I also couldn’t wait for Brody’s story to finally be told – it was a long time coming! – and he and Maeve were magic together…
Which worked out pretty good considering this fantasy world was full to the brim of all things out of this world. Sea witches, Seers, children – and armies – with magical powers. The came together for one final battle where all the kingdoms were at stake. Sound fun, wild and full of unexpectedness? Throw in shifters, romance and royalty and you have this series – and story – in a nutshell. It is, however, impossible to pigeon-hole really. These are anything but cookie-cutter reads and Maeve and Brody’s was no exception. Both determined to find truth, with a good need for revenge mixed in as well, their journey was full of ups and downs as they found more than they bargained for. Along with a romance that had been percolating from afar for way too long, their not so sudden courtship was fraught with intrigue, drama, humour and even sweetness. And lots and lots of magic…
Like I said, hard to pigeon-hole with so much going on but so much to savour as the plot revealed itself one delicious chapter at a time... Great way to end the series!
In the romance genre, authors rarely go in directions the readers didn’t see coming a mile away. We usually know within a few chapters who the murderer is, which supposedly good character is actually a villain, or what secret is being hidden. For the most part, this has held true with the Embraced series, until The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea.
When we left our five Embraced sisters, they and their husbands had unmasked and defeated all but 2 of the evil Circle of Five. Brody left to look for the Embraced army and discover who the unknown Circle members were. The unmasking of these people is not only shocking, but it leads down an emotional journey for both Brody and Maeve.
The relationship between them is very sweet. Readers have watched them circle around each other for the past few books. It was particularly wonderful to see Brody realize that, while he has had feeling for Maeve for years, he didn’t really know HER. It was very much a strong attraction that built to love as he spends time with her instead of insta-love.
A wonderful addition that is the perfect blend of romance and action.
This book is about characters Maeve and Brody working against evil magical forces, along with their connection to each other and what it means for them. Magic, romance, power, etc.
What worked for this book was the storyline and characters because they combined to create a new story within this world, and bring it forth with solid plot, and believable and intriguing characteristics within Maeve and Brody, etc. Additionally, the characters were created with a balance to ensure that they were not made as perfect based characters.
Although the book did have an intriguing storyline/plot, I found that there were a few times where there were some repetition of finding out background information.
Overall, it was a great read, and I would say this book is for people who want an intriguing magical story with a splash of romance. Please note this book is part of the Embraced (#5)/Embraced by Magic series (#2).
Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Books for the ARC.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this, but I didn't realize it was the fifth in a series. I am really intrigued in the overarching plot so I will pick up the first four at some point.
I think for most of us this book is a long time coming. Most of us who have enjoyed this series couldn't wait for Brody's story. Oh, and Maeve's story too. What can I say, Brody, stood out to me as a more interesting character. Not that I don't like Maeve because I do, she just didn't stand out like he did. And really that's a good thing. Makes the story more interesting because you want to know more about Brody and you cheering him on and you also like Maeve and want her to be happy
I have to say I really enjoyed the twist in the story. I won't tell you more because I really want you to learn it yourself but I will say that it has to do with Maeve and her mother. I bet you can't wait to read it now.
This is a good action-packed story that has you cheering on both Brody and Maeve. I'm so glad these two found a way to stick together and fight together. We learn so much in this story and I'm happy that Maeve went looking for Brody.
I really enjoyed this story and was a little sad that the series has come to an end but I'm looking forward to what comes next from this author.
The action pact, thrilling and so very long awaited ending to the Embraced series! Brody has been a favorite since the beginning and Maeve may just be my favorite sister! Her path in life seems to be the least exciting and with no suprises on the horizon, but that could not be further from the truth. Everything she thought she knew about herself will be turned upside-down. Brody, who she thought she knew has a few secrets of his own and her path may be the most perilous of all! The war with the Circle of Five reaches its zenith and the Kings and Queens with their arms will all be in for the biggest battle of all. This was such a good story and it certainly had me shedding a tear or two and enjoying the ride thoroughly! It's bitter sweet to come to the end, but this one certainly did the series justice. Enjoy people!
This book was beautifully written and the story was engaging. However, as I haven’t previously read the other books in the series I didn’t get as much out of it as I would have liked. Definitely more enjoyable when read as a part of the series.
What a fun book! I loved this entire series. It was sweet and fun and different. I loved all of the characters and their adventures.
Disclaimer: I hadn't read the previous books in the series before picking up this one. But I felt the author did a good job describing the world and what has happened previously. That being said, I had trouble connecting to the story emotionally. Maeve felt a bit like a petulant child to me and Brody felt difficult to pinpoint as a character. (All this shifting into different animals and Maeve asking every animal if he's Brody in the beginning of the novel, and then him impersonating practically her father, didn't help.)
Overall, I think this high fantasy novel had many great elements but it just wasn't for me.
I'm a bit sad this great romantic fantasy series finished but I'm happy I highly enjoyed this book.
The world building and the character development are excellent as usual, the plot kept me hook.
An engrossing and entertaining read, highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
It's been quite a while since I've read a book by Kerrelyn Sparks and none of those were from this series. This is the fifth book in this series and it really shows - all Maeve's sisters are happily married (all to kings no less!) and Maeve is the baby sister left behind.
The author does a great job of sketching out the family relationships and pressures that drive both Maeve and Brody. As a fantasy romance this was a great light read with a good balance of plot and romance. It does suffer a bit for being so far along in a series that I felt like I needed both a map and a character list to keep track of all the names, and having come in at this late stage, I was less invested in the character moments from previous books. I enjoyed this book, but I definitely think I would've enjoyed it more if I had read the previous books.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley; all opinions are my own.
Finally...we have Brody’s story. There were definitely some twists and turns in this book that kept you on the edge. You pretty much knew that Maeve was going to be royalty, just from the other books. But, it was really a surprise as to whose family she belonged to. Other surprises...the final members of the Circle of Five, the Embraced army, the identity of the Cameleon and Maeve’s parentage.
All the loose ends of the story arc are tied up and the ending is extremely satisfying. I can’t wait to see if there will be more stories in this world or will we be taken to some place new?
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book.
In The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea, Maeve learns her parentage and gets her man. Maeve has liked Brody for all the years her sisters from the Isle of the Moon have been finding their destinies.
Maeve feels left behind, but as the race heats up to find the Embraced Army Maeve will find herself in the middle of it all.
I think the romance between Brody and Maeve went better than Sorcha’s with the Woodsman In How to Love Your Elf.
The chameleon will finally be dealt with. Brody finds the witch that cursed him. We find out who Brody really is. We meet the Embraced Army. I’m not sure they are worth the capital letters but they did what they were raised to do.
One thing that bugs me about the whole series is that the majority of the action happens in the last 20% of the book. Sometimes it would be nice to spend more time in the thick of the action.
I am glad both Brody and Nevis find love in this book. I was excited to read this book about the youngest sister Maeve. Her story was a long time in the making and I think she would agree.
Can a siren be good? Maeve and her nature hold the answer.
