This was a very good ending to the series. I've always been fond of Brody and Maeve and I was happy with how their story played out. They were both strong, courageous, determined, protective, and sweet. We learn answers to secrets, there was some action, and romance to keep me happy. All in all, this was a good conclusion to the series. Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Publishing for this copy. This is my honest review.
The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea - by Kerrelyn Sparks
I was given an ARC by NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.
If Maeve can't have Brody for her lover, she doesn't want any man. But her true love has already been foretold by the Telling Stones. Foretold twice, much to her annoyance. The number three, and the colors green and purple. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with Brody, but she refuses to leave it up to destiny.
I greatly enjoyed this book. I believe that the author, Kerrelyn Sparks, has saved the best for last.. She has perhaps chosen to make Maeve and Brody the hero and heroine of the final book for the greatest revelation. In my opinion, they are underdogs, both overlooked and underestimated by everyone. Not that they are not loved and appreciated. But her sisters always see Maeve as young and inexperienced. Brody, they do value for his friendship, bravery and his ability to eavesdrop on unsuspecting troublemakers, but his friends sometimes carelessly pat him on the head when he is in his dog form. There are a lot of secrets to be revealed about these two characters.
This book is the second book in the series Embraced By Magic following a 3 book series called The Embraced.
Each book is set in Aerthlan, a world with two moons and magic. Each child born on the night when the moons eclipse or “embrace” has a gift of magic. In the past, these gifted children were feared and the wicked rulers of the four countries had decreed that all embraced children would be put to death. For their safety, five embraced girls were sent to the convent on the Isle of Moon where they could live in hiding. They became a family of sisters by choice. Now, Maeve's four sisters have become queens and rule with their embraced husbands. All children born with magic talents can now stay safe at home with their parents. The current danger is the coming attack from the embraced army in service to the remaining cruel members of the Circle of Five. The final face off between good and evil.
Maeve loves the four older girls with whom she was raised, but at almost 18 years old they still treat her as a young child who needs to be protected from danger. Leaving her out of important meetings. Always telling her what she should do. And they keep pushing suitors on her so Maeve can find the happiness that Luciana, Brigitta, Gwennore and Sorcha have found with their husbands. None of these suitors are of any interest to her. The man who has already captured Maeve's heart, Brody, does not seem to pay her any attention. The exception is once a month when the moons embrace, he comes to visit her.
Brody is a spy/investigator for the king and queen of Eberon and their allies. He has been missing for two months and no one else, besides Maeve, is even worried about him! Another complication is that, as a boy, Brody was cursed by a sea witch to be in his human form for only a short time of each day. Most of the time he is a black and white dog or other animal.
The wait for this book has built the suspense and added to the enjoyment of this book. I love how Maeve and Brody use their brains and their magical powers to solve their dilemmas. I loved that the finale has all the couples working together to find a way to win without breaking the “good guy” rules. I also enjoy how all these books have had double love stories. The hero and heroine find their HEA and so do two of their friends. I read it twice and enjoyed the second time finding many “bread crumbs” leading the way.
The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea is a brilliant finale to the previous 4 books found in two series set in the world of Aerthlan, books #1-3 in The Embraced series and book #1 of Embraced by Magic. This book can be read as a stand alone, however reading the previous books in order would enrich the experience of reading this book. Myself and many other readers have been enjoying the tales of the first four sisters by choice having an adventurous journey on the way to finding their HEA. The final book will be released August 25, 2020.
Gripping story! I had purchased the previous book so I can get a feel about the characters--but this book can stand on its own! I have read other books written by the author and I knew it was going to be a great storyline. She makes the characters seem so alive--heroic and yet inherently human. Lovable and annoying in turns—yet you couldn't help but root for both hero and heroine and love ever after. I also love how there was a side story--romance blooming with the supporting characters--but I will not divulge any spoilers. There's romance, magic, action--and of course, steamy love scenes.
I will have to look for the other earlier books in the series and will most likely re-read this and the others in the correct order. Thank you for giving me the chance to do a review of this book! I loved it!
I simply adore this series. It’s fresh and full fantasy for the romance genre and we just don’t have enough of that! This take on sirens was fun and witty—fast paced.
Finally we get to know more about Brody , a man cursed to only be in his own body for two hours a day. No one knows who he really is and he’s absolutely kept to himself the knowledge that like the evil Chameleon he can assume the form of humans too ! No to most Brody is just a cute and dare I say pretty dog who makes the perfect spy.
Maeve doesn’t want to sit on the sidelines anymore and she’s desperate to locate her missing friend Brody. She doesn’t care what the Circle of Five are plotting because Maeve has a plan of her own but her journey takes her to a hideous discovery about herself and just where she came from !
This the final book in this series about the Embraced ticked so many boxes. The Circle of Five and the Chameleon who has featured heavily in previous books finally get their comeuppance. I loved Brodys backstory which was a completely surprising . The evil Embraced army turned out to be nothing at all like I was expecting which was a wonderful surprise. Plus all my favourite characters returned with glorious effects. It’s funny ( keep an eye on Nevis !) , it’s romantic and even a little sad but most of all it was a thoroughly entertaining end to a series that I have truly enjoyed.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea by Kerrelyn Sparks is the 5th book in her embraced series and tells the story of Maeve, a young seal shifter and siren.
I didn't realise when I started this nook that it was part of a series, but it didn't seem to matter. Although there is mention of events from previous books I could follow the story quite easily
The characters were likeable but both they and the world at times lacked depth, but this could be becauseI missed reading the 4 books before this one.
There were sex scenes that surprised me with how graphic they were, and the story was a little predictable.
That said, I enjoyed the story as a whole. I found it a quick read that brought both tears and smiles to my face.
I would read the other books in the series and consider reading this again.
4 stars
The writing was excellent. Everything came to a satisfying conclusion with nothing left unanswered. A lot needed to be resolved, and it was wrapped up too conveniently. Discovering who the remaining members of the Circle of Five were was not difficult although one member was a surprise. Finding the Embraced army was even easier, and the army itself was a huge disappointment.
I’ve always loved Brody and anxiously awaited getting his story. Discovering all of Brody’s secrets was fascinating. His romance with Maeve was a bore. It felt like coming into the romance halfway through because their feelings for each other were well developed from the start. A lack of communication was a major problem for the two of them. Maeve was alright. Her past was more interesting than she was. She was brave but had no wit or charm.
There was a secondary romance between Ellie and Nevis. Surprisingly I was way more invested in this relationship. They were so cute together. Adorably cute! I found myself wishing more than once that the two of them could have had their own book.
There were several parts and characters that I really liked. Four books built up to this, so I thought their enemies would be harder to defeat. I’m sure this is one of those books that most people will like more than I did.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a very cute and entertaining light read. It is nice to read these on occasion. This is about the youngest sister, Maeve (her other sisters found their happily ever afters in previous books). She is feeling left out since all her sisters are married and have lives and kids of their own. Maeve wants to find her own love, who happens to be Brody who has been missing for two months. He is looking for the Embraced army that might be a danger to the other islands.
There are many cute moments in this story and I got several giggles out of it, especially with the shapeshifting and such. It is nice sometimes to read how all the good guys and girls end up with their own true loves and that all the bad guys get their comeuppance.
I may not have read all the other previous books, but I had no problem reading this one and understanding the politics and other situations. I would probably read the other ones now because this one was fun.
This story is about Maeve, the youngest sister (no blood relation) of five women, who were abandoned and raised together on the Isle of Moon as orphans. These five women who were all born “embraced”, have special powers. Maeve is a Siren, and able to change into a selkie (seal) when she chooses to. And while all her sisters have different powers, they have all met and married wonderful men, and have each become Queens to Kingdoms in Aerthlan.
This story focuses on Maeve and another who’s embraced, a shifter by the name of Brody, who Maeve has secretly loved for years. When he goes missing for 2 months, Maeve decides to go looking for him, and for the rumored embraced army that threatens to destroy the peace that the mainland kingdoms share.
Together, and with the help of old and new friends, Maeve and Brody work together to defeat the embraced army and the remaining members of the Circle of Five. But with danger around every corner, and constant secrets being revealed.... will love be enough to keep these two together? Or will Brody’s curse of not being able to remain a man for longer than 2 hours a day, be too much for Maeve to bare?
All in all, The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea is a perfect conclusion to Kerrelyn Sparks Embraced by Magic series. I especially enjoyed learning about the origin of Aerthlan and of its history of its people.
Thank you Ms Sparks for another great adventure! And thank you netgalley for offering me an arc of this book for review!
Thank you Kensington Books and NetGalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review. My review is my own and not influenced by others.
I’ve read many books by Kerrelyn Sparks which I liked so I was eager to begin in this book.
There are 5 sisters who were raised on a magic Isle, four sisters became queens in the previous books by this series. This story is about the fifth sister Maeve.
I wanted to like this book as much as I did with the other books by this author. However, I just didn’t got in the story like I wanted to. The characters didn’t get to me, I didn’t feel any connection with them something that is a must for me to like a story.
I received a free ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been waiting for Maeve and Brody's book since book one when they were hinted at being a future couple. It was an amazing fantasy romance.
Brody's past has been hinted about alot in the books. As such it should be read after the others in the series but you could probably get away with reading it solo.
The couple have met previously in the other books. Brody is a shapeshifter that's under a curse. In this book Maeve develps the ability to shapeshift and the person she wants to show the most is Brody. But he goes missing. So meave sets forth to go find and save him.
Thank you Netgalley for the eARC.
The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea is the 5th book in the Embraced series. Maeves sisters are now all queens in their own countries leaving only Maeve unmarried. She has plenty of potential suitors but the man she wants has been missing for two months and rumours of an embraced army have surfaced.
The book focuses on Maeves journey to find Brody and the location of the embraced army.
I really enjoyed this book. In fact i couldn't put it down and finished it in one night!
It is magical. full of twists and the main love story is great. Though the instalove between the other two prominent characters was a bit much for me. The book is well written and captivating.

I love this author and her books!!!
What a beautifully written 5th book in The Embraced Series! Full of laughs, magic, and plenty of imagination included. Every page is magically written. It just makes you to inhale the book in one breath and leave you breathless!
I read all 5 books. That is it for this series. I loved every single one! I loved this one the most!
Now I am going to wait until next perhaps new series are written, and I will be there to fully embrace it!!!
Get ready for a fantastic fantasy from page one! Maeve and Brody are main characters who will pull you in and hold you close as you as ride the emotional waves with them. Emotional and also adventuresome... this is not just a romance there is so much more depth and story here. The pace and world building worked in harmony to make this a page-turner that I hated to put down for any reason.
The circle of five makes for some intense moments and antagonists who push our heroes to their limits. The links and tangled web added so much to the emotional wind up. I was totally in love with the characters, Brody being my favorite, which is saying a lot because I am usually drawn to villains, but his manner and the curse and just everything about him was spot on perfect.
This was such a joy to read, a truly unique take on mermaids/siren stories. I came into it at the end of the series having read none of the other parts and was instantly drawn in without any confusion as to who was who or where I was. That's really wonderful storytelling at work. I know I will be going back in the story to see where this all started and because I already miss them.
Highly recommended for fans of romantic fantasy.
The epic finale to "The Embraced" romance fantasy series.
This whole series has had me hooked since book one, and this one was the cherry on top. It has been an incredible journey.
I adored all the secrets revealed in this conclusion. Most of them took me by surprise, even if we could see others coming. We could say that "The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea" delivers from chapter one. We can see a change in the heroine's behavior. I loved Maeve's strong will and determination to help Brody. She refuses to be left out once more. Her sisters, the queens, have kept Maeve in the dark long enough, but that won't stop her. For once, she's going after the man, not waiting for him to save her. Also, the romance dynamic is quite refreshing for the series, considering our lovebirds already liked each other. The side romance in this book was also the best out of the others. Nevis deserved a happy ending as well after working so hard since the first book.
It was beautiful to see everything tied neatly together after so long.
WOW!!! What an awesome ending to the embrace series... the story is amazing and wonderfully written. I really enjoyed the story of Brody and Maeve... I just knew it they both would end up together. I loved the world the author created and there were a lot of unexpected turns of events but exhilarating in which had me at the edge of my seat. I honestly recommend this book.
Btw I was given an ARC for an honest review so there it is and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
While the book is focused around Maeve and Brody we see a lot of secondary characters in this one. A little of their back story is given during the course of the story. I really enjoyed the story overall but the romance scenes between Maeve and Brody were a bit off for me. Thankfully the majority of the book did not center around their intimate encounters. Plenty of action in a steady paced story.
Any born when the two moons embrace in the night sky are born with magical powers and called the Embraced. At one time they were feared and abandoned. Maeve was raised in a convent on the Isle of Moon along with her four Embraced foster sisters. At an early age she found out she was a siren and could shift to the form of a seal. She has also had a crush on Brody, who just happens to be a shifter as well.
Brody found out he was Embraced the day that his father and brother were killed. The same day a sea witch cursed him so that he could only take his true form for two hours a day. With rumors of a secret magical army in the service to the Circle of Five, Brody is trying to find out where they are located so they can be stopped. With all of the secrets, will Brody and Maeve be able to find their happily ever after?
This book is the first in the Embraced series that I have read and it was absolutely amazing!
I could not put it down. Romance, drama, secrets, magic, shifters, this book has it all! There were references to past events in the book but not enough that I felt like I didn't know what was going on by not reading the previous books, however, it would be best to read the books in order. Kerrelyn Sparks has done it again and written a knock your socks off romance. I will definitely be reading the rest in the series as soon as I can!
This book was given to me an an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in an exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
I enjoyed this book. It was the perfect escape from life. The book seemed like there may have been more to the story before this one but if there was there was enough information to know what was happening. Overall an enjoyable read.
This is a fun, quick read. It's book two in her series and is a great romantic, fantasy novel. I would recommend making sure you read book 1 (How To Love Your Elf) for some more background as this is not really a stand alone.
