Charleston Green by Stephanie Alexander is the 1st book in the Tipsy Collins mystery series, and it's off to a great start. Tipsy is a reluctant clairvoyant, who has worked hard to avoid dead people. After Tipsy gets a divorce, her three children and her move to a house on Bennett Street, when the ghosts in the house won't be ignored. Henry and Jane Mott died in the house, and rumor says Henry killed Jane and than himself. What a great story, Tipsy is determined to find out what really happened to the couple so they can move on. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Haint Blue.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

What attracted me to this title was the setting - Charleston is one of my bucket list places to visit, full of southern belle hospitality & incredible beauty. Add in a ghosty story & it seemed like a must read, which I’m happy to say did not disappoint!

Tipsy was a fun, vibrant character, I loved the way she was written with her unusual talent of being able to talk to the dead, like husband and wife Jane & Henry Mott.

Thank you for the opportunity to read this unique & entertaining title!

Charleston Green by Stephanie Alexander was a harder read than I expected. I liked the characters and the dynamic but reading about the heroine's struggles was a little too tiring for my taste. Well developed characters and interesting premise.

Thought this would be a fun little gothic type mystery, but found it to be very blah. However I sure that most cozy mystery readers would enjoy it.

There has been quite a bit of hype about Charleston Green, so I was so excited to receive an early copy of this book to review. I really enjoyed the first third of the book and I thought this was going to be a gem, but sadly, it really went downhill for me. I won't ruin the ending, but it felt kind of rushed and thrown together, including the main character's personal life.

I think this book can be saved with more direction and editing in the second half.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC for an honest review.

This is not of my typical genre. I don’t “do” ghosts or supernatural things. However, I thought I’d give it a try based on the setting - a Southern novel almost always hooks me... and it did! This is such a charming read, with endearing characters. I was very pleasantly surprised!

Tipsy Collins is navigating her role as newly divorced mother of three. When she and her children move into an old house in Charleston, she didn’t bargain on sharing it with two ghosts. But, Tipsy isn’t completely surprised. She’s been in contact with ghosts since she was a little girl. But, these ghosts are different. First, Tipsy has never lived under the same roof with a ghost. And secondly, Jane and Henry died in the house as a result of a murder-suicide. In reality, neither one can remember what led up to their deaths, although Jane is convinced her husband killed her, while Henry just as vehemently denies he didn’t. As Tipsy deals with her well-meaning friends and a vindictive ex-husband, she also tries to determine what really happened the day Jane and Henry died.

I simply loved this book. Charleston Green is a clever mystery intertwined with ghosts, friendships, and family relationships. The characters are quirky and the dialogue is entertaining. And, one of the things I enjoyed most was learning a little bit about the Lowcountry and Charleston, in particular. The environment, the culture, and the traditions of this unique area adds a great deal to the story. I found it to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.

When I found this book here on NetGalley, I had been looking for something that could cheer me up, and I can say Charleston Green has done that and more.

It is, indeed, an agreable and fun read, but it has surprised me by its emotional content, mostly related to the two problematic marriages in the story: Tipsy and ex-husband Ayers' and Jane and Henry's.

I loved the personalities of the characters. Some are easier to empathize or relate to, but all of them are quite human. Even Tipsy, Henry and Jane drove me mad at some moments, but disagreeing with their decisions only made me even more attached to them.

The book is a combination of contemporary novel, supernatural mystery and detective fiction that turns out to be also a journey about self-discovery. It's full of thoughts on relationships (sometimes abusive ones), maternity and other family matters directly related to being a woman in a sexist society. All that told through the history of a charming southern american town, which has its own shade of green.

Tipsy, can see dead people.
This was a wonderful ghost story that didn’t leave me too scared to come out from under the covers, there were parts where I would chuckle to myself and I found the characters charming.
Stephaine Alexander’s writing style kept me hooked, all in all a fun read!

Perfect read for social distancing while I am dreaming of sunny days of long in Charleston and Mount Pleasant. All the things I love about a low country book are represented in Charleston Green including history, mystery, strong women, ghosts, and love. Can't wait for more from Stephanie Alexander.

I fell head over heels with this book! Tipsy is a newly separated mom of 3. Her husband is a living nightmare to deal with. Her brother-in-law Jimmy allows her to move to a home in Mount Pleasant, Charleston. There, we discover that Tipsy has some supernatural powers: she can see and communicate with ghosts, a gift she shares with her Granna whose voice is very present, from the other side. She gets to meet co-habitants Jane and Henry Mott in her new home. And there will start a beautiful story.

The ghost story was intriguing and gracefully narrated. I adored the jumping into memories of ghosts to discover their history and what events led to their demise. I so enjoyed getting to know the main character Tipsy Collins; a newly single mom of 3; an independent woman, a painter, a fighter. I rooted for her all the way! The ghosts helped Tipsy trusting herself again and finding her independence.

If you love emotional ghost and family stories, Southern settings, strong female protagonists, art, friendship, you will love this book. A 6-star for me.

Thank you so much Net Galley and Stephanie Alexander for allowing me to read this sublime novel in exchange for an honest review.

When I started this book I did wonder why on earth I had chosen it - a woman called Tipsy who talks to ghosts? Oh, come on! But I started to read it and within pages I was hooked.

Its really well written, evokes a world in modern Charleston that I have never seen, and handles the 'ghost' element really cleverly so you too can believe people can talk to the spirits! Written in a humorous, yet sympathetic manner, the book also explores the relationships between men, women and their families. Tipsy's marriage has failed and her husband wants custody of the children - more to spite her than because he wants them; and in the home she is borrowing from a relative while she gets back on her feet there are two very tumultuous ghosts, finding no peace in the afterlife. Tipsy's journey back to her craft of painting and back to the world of dating and relationships are entwined with her quest to try to help these spirits find a resolution and discover how they really died.

The author sets the scene firmly in Charleston - I had to look up some terms! I now know what a joggle board is! Which just adds to the authenticity.

I really enjoyed it and hope there is more to come from the author. A cracking read!

I love the theory of scary stories but I always end being too scared to sleep. This novel was the the perfect balance of creepy but not terrifying.

A wonderful, charming, SOUTHERN flavored book. I'll admit though, even though it is not scary at all, just the creative otherwordly elements had me waking up and hearing things that go bump in the night.
Likeable if not charming characters - and a plot that keeps you wanting more.

This was fun! A ghost story that isn’t too scary for chickens like me. I like how the author incorporates Charleston history and the sights and sounds of the south. Being from the Midwest it’s nice to learn about other spots. I did struggle with the name Tipsy though. Not a fan. But she is a likeable character who tries to get through not only the normal struggles of life but supernatural ones too. I know a lot of people of many different ages that will enjoy this one!

This book had me hooked from start to finish! Recently divorced Tipsy needs a new start. As if being a single mother to three isn't hard enough, her ex-husband is doing everything he can to make life difficult. Tipsy communicates with ghosts, and whilst trying to help the two she is living with understand how they mysteriously died, she uses them to inspire her artwork and support her family. A totally enjoyable read. Can't wait for Stephanie Alexander to write a sequel.
