I just flew through “The End of Her” by Shari Lapena. I have to say I think this might be my favorite book by this author! It was fast-paced and grabbed your attention from the first chapter.
Stephanie and Patrick are recently married, with new-born twins. While both are sleep deprived from raising colicky twins, they know they have everything they ever wanted. However, when a woman from Patrick’s past arrives and makes a shocking accession about his first wife - Patrick may have murdered her! Patrick insists he’s innocent, but is he really telling the truth?
The story is told from multiple perspectives, but the main one being Stephanie. You really feel for her as a newlywed with newborn twins - her life is completely turned around. She doesn’t know who to believe and who to even trust. I felt I was very invested in her story and was gripping until the final page how this story would turn out.
This book is also a cat and mouse game! Not everyone is who they seem, and the author does a great job of revealing this! I did feel the ending was a bit rushed and at times flat. It is a relatively longer book compared to her previous writes, so I wish she would have taken the time to really focus more on the ending. However, that is my only big criticism.
Patrick and his wife Stephanie are struggling with parenthood. Their infant twins are colicky and neither one of them has slept a full night since their birth. They are exhausted and not thinking clearly. And then Patrick has somebody from his past show up at work. Erica Voss had been his first wife's best friend, but Patrick had cut ties with Erica after his wife died in a tragic accident. But Erica is making the accusation that her death was no accident, first, she demands money. And then she goes to the police. Patrick has been completely honest with Stephanie about everything from the moment that Erica shows up. Will Stephanie believe him and stand by him or will Erica Voss tear their marriage apart?
It has been a long time since I have been able to sit down and read a book from start to finish in one sitting. This snow Sunday morning was the perfect opportunity to do so. The story was gripping. Stephanie and Patrick seemed like the perfect couple with the perfect life. Yes, they were exhausted from dealing with colicky twins, but that would pass. Or so their doctor said. And then Erica Voss walked into their lives. Erica was the perfect villain. She was a blonde bombshell who was cunning and evil. As she puts pressure on Patrick and their perfect life, you can see the foundation start to crack. I was really surprised by the twists at the end of the book. And there were a few of them. - CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS.
Bottom Line - The End of Her is one of the better mystery novels that I have read recently. The story is fresh, the characters are real, and the twists will leave you speechless.

Shari Lapena continues to amaze me every time I read one of her books. I have now read all of them and I always think I know what is going to happen. I was sure that this is the time I've figured out where she is taking the storyline. Nope! Every time I think I have caught on to her twists she can shock you with another one. This book is probably my new favorite. The characters were amazing and I was sucked in from the very beginning. I could not wait to finish, but was sad when it was over because now I have to wait for another amazing thriller.
The End of Her begins with a mysterious woman from Patrick’s past showing up and accusing him of murder. Patrick has an explanation for everything, but is he telling the truth? It’s hard to decide who to trust in this thriller, but you can trust that Shari Lapena will deliver.
I loved this book! Cat and mouse, trust and mistrust, murder and deceit........and so much more.
If you’ve never read a Shari Lapena book you are missing out! I can not wait to get my hands on her next book!
When I saw this book came out, I knew I had o drop everything and read it. I have been a hue fan of all of Shari Lapena's books. The End of Her is a psychological thriller about a husband and wife with newborn twins who are extremely colicky. The mother, Stephanie, discovers that her husband Patrick hasn't been forthcoming about his past. He told her that his wife died in a car accident, but not that he might have been the reason for the accident. Stephanie has also inherited a large sum of money recently. The past come back to haunt them in the form of Erica, woman that Patrick was having an affair with when his wife died in the accident. Red flags begin to pop up all over the place and Stephanie starts to doubt her husband's innocence. I really enjoyed the novel itself, but there were some aspects that were not plausible. For example, the bank allowing Stephanie access to her husband's secret safety deposit box. Also, I do not like when books leave loose ends which Lapena did in the epilogue.
Shari Lapena has done it again folks!
Stephanie and Patrick are sleep deprived, new parents to colicky twins. They are just trying to function in the day to day when along comes Erica. Erica claims Patrick murdered is first wife and unborn child. So now the sleep deprived couple is have to deal with a crazy lady. Or is she? What really happened to Patrick’s first wife? Is Patrick a murderer like Erica claims? All of this leaves Stephanie wondering who she is really married to.
Although, I liked the story a lot I felt the fact that Stephanie and Patrick were “so tired” became repetitive and a little annoying. I also felt like the chapters jumped around between multiple characters instead of one chapter being one characters POV. I’m not sure why she chose to do it this way but I feel like it could have been smoother had it been one POV (but I’m not an author so who knows). The twists in this book were great! A fast paced thriller. Overall 4 stars for me.

Kept me guessing until the end! I really like Shari Lapena's style.
Stephanie has given birth to twin daughters and she and her husband, Patrick, are adjusting to their new normal. Deprived of sleep and dealing with colic, the new parents are pushed to the edge. But still, Stephanie is happy to be a new mother and makes the best of it. That is, until Erica, a woman from Patrick’s past, appears. She claims Patrick’s first wife didn’t die in an accident but, rather, was murdered. And, she accuses Patrick of the crime. As life begins to spiral out of control, Stephanie finds it increasingly hard to believe her husband is innocent.
The End of Her is well-written and it’s a fast read. The story and its plot is compelling and interesting. However, most if not all of the characters are unlikeable. The constant references to the exhaustion the new parents were experiencing became repetitive and annoying so, as a result, the story seemed to drag at times. Finally, some of the reactions of the characters were unrealistic and more than once I wanted to give Stephanie a good shake. While this book had all the ingredients to be suspenseful it just felt flat to me.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
I love a good domestic thriller and this one was great! Infidelity, lies, blackmail, first wife who died rather suspiciously--this book has it all. I kept going back and forth in my mind as to whether or not the main character was guilty of murder or if it was just a tragic accident, so the author kept me guessing til the end. This one is a solid thriller that will make you keep turning the pages.
Shari Lapena doesn’t disappoint with this new tale of suspense. Did he or did he not kill his first wife? What secrets are others hiding?
This was a fantastic read! I'm always a fan of Shari Lapena books and have always recommended them to library patrons who are looking for a great mystery! Thank you to Net Galley for the advance reading copy!
Thanks to Shari LaPena for a fantastic read that kept me up reading way past my bedtime and making me useless at work the next day! An engrossing, thrilling read with some despicable characters, interesting subplots and a feeling of just not knowing what's going to happen next! Blackmail, murder, and cheating spouses all figure into the plot. Characters you thought were good turn out to be bad, and the ending is, although somewhat predictable, thrilling nonetheless. A good solid read to keep you turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next. Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book!
The End of Her by Shari Lapena starts with a pregnant Lindsey in 2009 in Colorado; her husband Patrick is going to clear the car of snow and warm it up for their trip to her mother’s house across the state. Fast forward to Stephanie in 2018 in New York who has twins who are depriving her and her husband Patrick of sleep. A bit off on his mark at work due to lack of sleep, Patrick seems to panic when someone he knows from Colorado is applying for a job where he works.
Erica Voss had been his wife Lindsey’s best friend in Colorado, but she had an affair with Patrick. Now she has seemingly followed Patrick to New York. She gets him to meet her for a drink where she tells him she thinks he killed Lindsey. Suspecting he has not told Stephanie how Lindsey really died, Erica threatens to tell her the truth unless Patrick pays her off.
Who is telling the truth? Readers will keep turning the pages until they find out.
Canadian Shari LaPena always delivers! The End of Her is a page turner and the possibilities just keep changing until the very end. Lapena is best known for her 2016 thriller novel The Couple Next Door, which was a bestseller both in Canada and internationally.
My review will be posted on Goodreads starting September 27, 2020.
I would like to thank Pamela Dorman Books/Viking, an imprint of Penguin Random House, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for an objective review.
Loving this! I really enjoy books books written in multiple POV and this does not disappoint. Lapena does it again and does it very well!
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of The End of Her by Shari Lapena.
Stephanie and Patrick are exhausted. Their twin babies have colic, Patrick works a demanding job, and Stephanie is just trying to adjust to her new normal. But they are happy and in love.
But Patrick's blood runs cold when a woman from his past appears at his job, for an interview. She's the best friend of his late wife, and she comes with trouble. What will this mean for Patrick? What will it mean for his family.
I feel like this started out as a really delicious cake, ready to be baked, and then the oven died halfway in. It just came out half baked, rushed, and with a less than desirable texture. I was very hooked initially, but it was almost like the story lost interest in itself. For a suspense/domestic thriller, I was overall disappointed.
Stephanie and Patrick are new parents to twin girls. They are both severely sleep deprived, which is making Stephanie forgetful. One day, a woman enters their life with a shocking accusation that Patrick murdered his first wife when she was pregnant. Stephanie knew that Patrick’s first wife died in an accident, but when she hears the details, she can’t help but wonder if Patrick is guilty.
This is another great thriller from Shari Lapena. Her books are so fast paced and difficult to put down. I had to stop reading it one evening because I knew if I continued, I wouldn’t be able to put it down to go to sleep. The short chapters with cliffhanger endings make the pages fly by.
There were a lot of characters introduced in the first couple of chapters. It was a little confusing to keep straight at first because there were so many different people. I actually thought I had the story figured out right away. However, there were some shocking twists that kept me surprised right until the last page.
I really enjoyed this fast paced thriller!

i would like to thank NetGalley for an advanced copy of "The End of Her" by Shari Lapena. I have read all of her books and this one did not disappoint me. It was a page turner, i found myself staying awake all night to read this book.
Patrick and Stephanie seem to have it all, a happy marriage, beautiful newborn twin daughters, and financial security. Their only struggle appears to be sleep deprivation though the pediatrician reminds them that colic can’t last forever.
Then Erica enters the story to shake things up. Patrick never expected to see her again and yet here she is, trying to blackmail him. She’s accusing him of killing his first wife and is threatening to go to the police if he doesn’t hand over money from Stephanie’s trust fund.
Now it’s Stephanie’s turn to be shocked. She knew her husband’s first wife died but now that Patrick’s forced to give her the entire story.
Erica has several tricks up her sleeve and as things spiral out of control, Stephanie begins to worry that maybe her husband did have something to do with his first wife’s death …and what if she and her daughters are next?
The End of Her is a fast paced and suspenseful domestic thriller that will have you wondering which way is up! Full of twists and surprises, even if some may seem a little unbelievable, it ended in a way that I wasn’t expecting. Very enjoyable and entertaining.
I recommend this book to readers who love a juicy he said/she said mystery and domestic suspense.
It’s difficult to talk about this book without giving anything away, so I’ll just say this story took turns I certainly wasn’t expecting and I raced through it alternating reading it and listening on audio. Entertaining! I’d watch any movies based on this author’s books!
One of the best books I have read in awhile. A suspenseful story that keeps you guessing until the end. There are a lot of twists and turns, mostly involving Erika , someone from Patrick’s past who makes accusations about the death of Patrick’s first wife. A page turner to the very end. Thanks for the chance to read it.
