This book has a lot of fun patterns and very easy to follow guides on different stitches. It's hard to remember every stitch or what the abbrev mean and this was a great guide.
I tried out the book sleeve and am working on a pair or booties (or women's soft pumps). The pattern was easy to follow. (I have a link to the picture of my finished work)
I love crocheting and this book had a lot of fun ideas and so many different styles and levels of expertise. I sticked to easy but really want to try embroidery soon
Crochet is a technique and tutorial reference with included projects. This is a reformatted and updated 2nd edition (original pub. date 2014) due out 15th Sept 2020 from Penguin Random House on their DK imprint. It's 320 pages and will be available in hardcover format. As almost always with DK's offerings, I was blown away by the detailed, clear, and solidly expert photography. Every photo is well rendered and easy to follow. The supportive text is also clear, spare, and easy to understand.
The project tutorials are attractive and cover a broad range of difficulties, styles, and materials. Each of the tutorials contains a finished color photo, techniques used, project size and tools and supplies needed followed by step-by-step instructions. Most of the tutorials also contain multiple process photos which make construction and details easy to follow. Measurements are given in American standard and metric (SI) units. Projects are listed thematically: blankets & cushions, home & gifts, hats & scarves, gloves socks & slippers, clothing, toys, and bags.
At least in the eARC I was provided for review purposes, the revisions and additions in the second edition are highlighted in red text in the index and represent about 30% new content. It's probably worthwhile to have a look even for readers who have access to the first edition.
This would make a superlative selection for home hobbyists, learners, makers' spaces, library use, or in a classroom/workshop setting. Five stars. Very well done.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I loved this book! It is good for the beginner, as well as the advanced crocheter.
The format is the noted Dk visuals which are marvelous for the step by step instructions. I like the detail in the patterns showing what pages to go to for the technique’s used.
There is so much to learn with crochet and this does have most of the information needed to start and go beyond.
Lots of great photos for example stitches. Not a bad intro to crochet, the sample projects are not new or modern but was able to teach myself how to crochet.
This is not a read once book. This is a necessary reference book for any crocheter. The pictures are clear and easy to understand and follow. You will want to look through and find creative border and edging ideas for blankets you crocheted, knitted or even on fleece fabric. I also really liked the section on corner to corner crochet which is a great blanket maker and not often seen in other crochet books. Excellent for beginners and experienced crocheters alike.
ARC provided by NetGalley in return for an honest review
I am a beginner to crocheting and am still in the process of learning all the stitches, different yearn types, etc, (have completed a few basic amigurumi patterns). This is an absolute wonderful tool for any skill level! It has the basics like stitches and yarn types, but also projects for every level. All of the projects are followed by beautiful pictures and easy steps to follow. I will definitely be adding this to my collection!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. I'd like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this opportunity!
4 stars
My daughter and I decided to learn to crochet over this quarantine. Love learning new things and trying new techniques!
Whether you’re new to crocheting or are looking for some new techniques to bring your craft visions to life, this book is a great place to start! The presentation is beautiful with many full-color images and easy to follow, step by step instructions.
I received an e-copy of Crochet from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
First off I am an intermediate/advanced crocheter and have been crocheting for over 10 years and honestly, this is a great book for people of every skill level! Seriously I loved it and definitely plan to buy a physical copy to have for reference.
So I really love how this book covers so much and is a great reference book for beginners and experts. It covers everything from basic stitches, borders, yarns, color charts, beading, and projects for every level!
The projects all have bright and vivid pictures, as well as pictures explaining how to do different stitches it is really awesome! I already marked at least 3 projects I hope to start ASAP!
Thank you so much for the copy of this I really loved it!
I love craft books that tell me step by step how to create and which contain many photos of the process and the final product. This book did exactly that. In fact, I came away feeling that I could learn, and plan to buy a hook and yarn to give it a try.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for my digital ARC in exchange for my review.
Crochet has a lot of variety, there is a little bit of everything in the book. The steps are easy to follow and fun projects. It even takes different types of yarn into consideration and talks about how to choose the colors.
I can't rate this book or give feedback. The download (which I tried three different times) was always messed up. Sorry.
DK is always dependable and this book is no exception. I’ve always been somehow resistant to learning more than the most basic crochet stitches, but I teach art and craft classes at the library where I work, and crochet is frequently requested. This book is one that proved useful to me, and I will recommend it to my patrons, both new learners and experienced crocheters.
Very well put together guide on crochet. I really enjoyed the way the intrusions were written and felt like I could accomplish what was inside.
As someone who has crocheted most of her life, I really like this book. Lots of information that's good for the beginner and experienced crocheter with instructions that cover a large variety of techniquest.
The graphics in the book are beautiful as always for DK. I found the stitch graphics really easy to follow and there were great tools and tips throughout the book. I highly suggest this to anyone who is interested in learning crochet or improving their craft. I learned a few things. I think this book would be best in print due to the colorful images, but I'm sure it would be lovely on a tablet as well. Happy stitching!
Thank you to Netgalley and DK Publishing for my ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
A great reference guide! There are patterns to go with the different lessons, so that a novice can put what they learn to use. It's also easy to find information if you are not a novice but just need to double check how to do something. There are also a lot of stitches, and motifs, so that you can really work on your craft.
This is a beautifully photographed book and perfect for beginner crocheters. It is very comprehensive with a lot of different styles of crochet including stitches and patterns. The only problem for me was that the book is only for UK crochet, which is written different that US crochet. I would love to see this converted to US crochet.
This book has really great crochet patterns. I didn't actually make any of the projects yet, but the patterns appeared to be well written. It includes easy patterns, but it also has patterns for more advanced crocheters. The only suggestion I have for improvement is to mark the patterns with the American hook size (A, B, C etc).
I own a lot of craft books but not very many crochet books because so many of them are either very basic or have too few patterns I think I'll actually make. That said, this book is going in my collection!
When I discovered patterns in crochet that were made up of symbols instead of abbreviations it opened up the craft for me--reading written-out patterns is significantly more difficult for me to follow. As I paged through and saw that this book included symbols as well as written-out instructions for the stitch patterns, that immediately piqued my interest. While unfortunately the project instructions don't include charts, it's still good to see the stitch patterns in symbols to help understand their structure.
The number of techniques covered is impressive and the variety of the patterns, many of which are classic in shape and style, means that this is a resource that will be used for years to come (unlike most of the books from the 1960s and 1970s I collected when I first became interested in crochet).. The projects range from home dec to clothing for all ages, as well as the perennial baby booties and toys.
The book is divided into sections that make sense logically, which make it easier to find techniques and patterns. The glossary and index are very useful and definitely features I appreciate.
Despite its somewhat unassuming cover, this is one of those rare crafting books I will reach for again and again.
