I loved Elizabeth Heiskell's previous two cookbooks, so I was very excited to see Come On Over! It is a wonderful collection of recipes in lots of different and very appealing categories. There are "diet days" and "cheat days." There are party days and days spent with children. Each category holds a delicious set of recipes. Nothing fussy here, just simple ingredients and instructions. There are lots of tips sprinkled in as well. I loved the author's stories throughout, where she talks about her parents, her friends, and her background growing up in the Mississippi Delta area. It adds a lot of interest and fun to the book. Almost every recipe features a stunning color photo, so we can see what it is supposed to look like. There are a few recipes I'm dying to try asap. I'm going to the grocery store today to get the ingredients! Highly recommend.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Come On Over!: Southern Delicious for Every Day and Every Occasion. I voluntarily chose to review this cookbook and my opinion is freely given.

Come On Over! is an interesting cookbook, written in a way that gives the reader the feeling that they are invited to a personal Southern gathering. There are beautiful photographs, both personal and about the food, which enforce this feeling of family. The book strikes the right balance and is sectioned out in a unique way that helps to highlight the food. The sections are as listed below, with some of the standout recipes.

Weekdays: The Good Chicken; Soup and Sandwich Night (Tomato Soup with Ham and Swiss)

Party Days: Brie-Stuffed Artichokes; Tacky Tacky Meatballs; The Perfect Beef Tenderloin

Delta Days: Mason Jar Cocktails; Country Club Potatoes; Beulah Ribs

Summer Days: Tomato Pie; Just Right Squash Casserole; Grandmother's Mocha Cake

Beach Days: Cornbread Salad; Humble Chicken Salad; Shrimp, Corn, Potato and Sausage Boil; Fish Tacos with Lime Crema

Game Days: Jambalaya; Fried Chicken Pasta; Fireside Dip (aka Hot Tamale Dip)

School Days: No Beans Or Greens Chili; Eggroll in a Bowl; Chicken and Ranch Wraps

Diet Days: BLTA Salad; Mediterranean Chopped Salad

Cheat Days: Blueberry French Toast Casserole; Wine and Cheese Grilled Cheese

From appetizers, to mains, and desserts, there is something here for everyone. The biggest issue that I had with Come On Over! is the use of convenience foods and boxed mixes. For example, the author takes a boxed cake mix and wrapped caramels to make Caramel Brownies. To me, successful cookbooks are the ones that take raw ingredients and turn them into delicious meals. Despite the fact that the author takes some shortcuts, there is a lot to like about this cookbook. For that reason, I would recommend Come On Over!: Southern Delicious for Every Day and Every Occasion to those looking to make some good Southern food.

Even though this book had plenty of mouthwatering recipes and was a bit down to earth, it was a bit frustrating with all the recipes with ingredients not easily found in Norway. If nothing else, at least the book had a couple of slow cooker recipes.

3☆ A Delightful Cookbook with plenty of selection.

Come on Over! Is a delightful Southern cookbook, with a variety of recipes for all occasions.
It is beautifully illustrated and lots of gorgeous photographs included with the recipes.

However for me being in the UK a fair amount of the Ingredients are not easy to get hold of, so although I enjoyed the mouthwatering recipes it's not very practical for me as a cook.

One thing that would of been handy at the start of the cookbook would of been a guide to equipment needed ie, skillet, slow cooker, etc.. and also a brief guide to some of the methods used ie deglazing which some cooks may never have heard of or done before.
Also I want to just point out you should NEVER WASH Chicken! Which is recommended in one of the recipes.

The book is made up of the following Chapters where each chapter has a good selection of recipes :-
-Weekdays
- Party Days
- Delta Days
- Summer Days
- Beach Days
- Game Days
- School Days
- Diet Days
- Cheat Days

Just a note to say all the measurements are in Cups, Ounces, spoons so if you are in the UK like me then you will need a converter as there wasn't one included in the book or invest in some good cup measurements.

Examples of recipes
* Beef Bourguignon
* Perfect Roast Chicken
* Chicken Tetrazzini
* Alfredo with Peppers, Onion and Sausage
* Spaghetti Pie

* Kale Yes Juice
* Ginger Avocado Salad
* Blueberry French Toast Casserole

* Boozy Caramel-Coffee Milkshake
* Boozy Brandy- Vanilla Milkshake

Some of the Methods are a little vague and If you was a novice cook or trying out new recipes you might find that some of the step by step methods don't have enough detail.
I do understand that when writing a cookbook it's always hard to get the balance just right as you don't want to overload too much on written information, but for me I would of liked a bit more explaining.
I did however like the tips included in some of the recipes.

Overall a good selection of delicious recipes for all tastes. Beautifully illustrated and presented.
Would I recommend....Most Definitely!

Thank you to Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

A fun twist on Southern cuisine, Come on Over! declares itself "southern delicious for every day and every occasion". This cookbook doesn't break down food into sections like sides and mains but instead breaks in down by occasion. If you need a dish for a day of tailgating, a day at the lake (or in this case, the Mississippi delta), or just a meal for a weekday, this book has it for you. There is a "diet" section which did not do much for me, but there are plenty of other gems in here to keep you cooking (and satisfied)!

I'm southern. Not just southern. I'm a chubby southerner.

Yep. That is me. I like to eat. I also occasionally want something from the husband and then I cook. So I'm always looking for new ideas to cook. That makeup obsession I have doesn't buy itself.

When I saw this one I was like yes please! Then I started reading over it. I am probably not the target audience for this book and I admit it. I already cook 95 percent of these recipes.
There was only one that I thought I might take a try at and I've made something similar but with beef instead.

The photos in the book are pretty and I'm guessing if you need a southern cookbook that this one is a good place to start.
There is a ton of canned cream of stuff added into the recipes though and they do something to my digestive system.

I eat it anyways but still.

Crap. I'm going middle of the road with 3 stars. I have no clue on how to rate it. Disclaimer: I never said I was helpful.

First off, the layout/chapter names are original and user friendly. Loved that alone. But these recipes come with mouth watering photos, easy to follow directions and thoughtful layout for MANY occasions.

What a warm and comforting cookbook! I’m astounded. Mouth watering recipes....check! Empowering words....check! Gorgeous pictures...Check! At first I thought the release date was wrong because a whole year before it releases seems just a long time so I’m incredibly grateful that Netgalley and the publisher granted my wish. These are my thoughts and ideas based on the ARC copy I was given.

What did I like? As a southerner myself, all the ingredients are just regularly in my kitchen so that is a huge plus. Instantly from the words in the book you can tell that this is not only a cookbook but a freeing and self helpful guide. Don’t wait for holidays, celebrate every day like it’s your birthday. From the first page to the last the recipes and words from this author are just warm and welcoming. Mouthwatering recipes are just the best part of this cookbook.

Would I recommend or buy? YES...yes.yes. I went to go instantly buy because let’s be honest....it’s an amazing cookbook. With food I regularly enjoy and recipes that look amazing buying this is a no brainer. I ended up buying one of her earlier cookbooks just to check it out....What can I bring? I love family orientated cookbooks, they’re just so cozy.

Thoughts for the author? I would love to be on your advanced ARC copy list... a paper copy would be amazing. Cookbooks are pricey but a weakness of mine. This author is definitely going on my wishlist. Fabulous cookbook... my first recipe will be that Good Chicken. Five stars!

Come on Over!: Southern Delicious for Every Day & Every Occasion by Elizabeth Heiskell is a colorful look at the food culture and recipes of the Mississippi Delta. This cookbook is divided into nine recipe categories including Weekdays, Party Days, Delta Days, Summer Days, Beach Days, Game Days, School Days, Diet Days and Cheat Days. Each category and many of the recipes offer personal insights from the author, which makes Come on Over! more fun than a lot of cookbooks.

For the most part, the recipes in this book are quick and easy - many use prepackaged ingredients, and several take advantage of slow cookers. I pulled out several to test in my own kitchen including Tomato Pie, Chocolate Cobbler, Cornbread Salad and Grillades and Grits, The recipes were well written, easy to follow and included color photographs, something I always look for in a cookbook so I know what my end product should look like. And the results were delicious!

Although I'm a huge fan of Southern cooking, and have basically eaten my way from Memphis to New Orleans, I wasn't really familiar with the specific Delta food culture before reading Come on Over! After reading it, I'm still not exactly sure what it is other than simple, yummy food that gives you more time around the table with family and friends.

This review is based on an advance copy read.

Being in the uk I love seeing books from around the world. I did have to look up some of the ingredients as they are described differently for us. Also we work in weights rather than cups. (However I have invested in these)
The book contains a wonderful collection of recipes. Layout is lovely with recipes easy to follow and colourful pictures. I shall enjoy cooking up many of these dishes during lockdown.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the arc in return for an honest review.
