When part of a dismembered body is found near to the railway line, DI Lottie Parker is horrified to find that it belongs to a child. It soon becomes apparent that the torso had been frozen, leading the police to believe that this is not a recent death. Why has no one reported a missing child and where is the rest of the body? After a local woman discovers a small skull when renovating her house, connections are made, but are they the right ones? Why have these body parts started appearing and who else must die to protect the secret?
Well, Lottie certainly had her work cut out with this case and it has definitely confirmed for me that Ragmullin is fast becoming Ireland's answer to Midsomer due to the amount of murders occurring in a relatively small place! As well as having to deal with possibly her most complex case to date, Lottie is having to contend with numerous problems in her personal and professional life. Finally engaged to her colleague, Boyd, she is having to support him through his recent cancer diagnosis whilst also helping him with his sister due to the death of his mother. Added to this, Lottie's daughter is also looking to move away from Ragmullin to live in America with her young son and there is also someone at work desperate to bring the detective down. With all of this turmoil, it's a wonder she manages to solve the crime!
Buried Angels has arguably the most complex plot so far in any of Patricia Gibney's books with numerous characters and plots providing a complicated yet gripping story line. What initially starts off as a cold case soon becomes much more recent as more bodies are found. It was obvious that all of these deaths were linked, but how? As the book progressed, it became apparent that there was a link to something that took place many years before and we become privy to some of this by the way of flashbacks. I was genuinely horrified by what I read, shocked by the depravity of the individual who Lottie would go on to reveal towards the end of the book.
With such a complex plot, I was pleased that the ending tied up all loose ends beautifully, linking each seemingly unrelated event successfully. The turn taken in Lottie's professional life is an interesting one, and I can't wait to see how the relationship between herself and her superior develops in the next book. I always look forward to reading the next Lottie Parker book and Buried Angels has left me in a similar position. Bring it on!
Book 8 in the Lottie Parker series and another excellent addition overall.
The balance of crime solving and family issues is much better balanced this time. A rather complicated plot with lots of characters and suspects make it a little hard to follow at times, especially with there being both legacy and current murders but it wraps everything up at the end in a satisfying manner.
Lottie for me is such a likeable and well written character that I enjoy spending time with her first and the storyline second. Thankfully for the vast majority of books the storyline has been very strong also and this one falls into that category.
This is a great series. There’s less than a handful of series I can think of that have gone this far in books published and remain very strong. Lottie is the star of the show each time, in a very understated way.
I’m already looking forward to getting my hands on book 9 when it comes out.
Many thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and Patricia Gibney for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Buried Angels, the eighth novel to feature DI Lottie Parker of Rathmullin An Garda Síochána.
11 year olds Jack and Gavin find a torso on the railway tracks and at the same time Faye finds a skull in a house she is renovating. Are they linked? Lottie doesn’t know but she’s going to find out, until Faye is murdered, leading to more questions.
I thoroughly enjoyed Buried Angels which is an event filled read with plenty of twists and turns that held my attention from start to finish. It is not for the squeamish as it has a high body count and some distressing events but it powers along from one development to the next, pulling the reader along for the ride. It is mostly told from Lottie and the investigation’s point of view but there are some chapters from the killer that fill in historical detail for the reader. I’m not always a fan of hearing from the killer but in this case it works well, giving little away except an appreciation of some of the links. The novel is well constructed with a series of seemingly disparate events gradually coalescing into one narrative. I’m not so sure of the conclusion which doesn’t quite gel for me, but it’s fun and engrossing getting there.
Lottie is a wonderful creation, an everyday woman trying to juggle work, raising three children and an ill fiancé. It doesn’t always glow with success in her estimation but to the rest of us she does a good job. There are ructions at work with a new boss and not so much troubles but impending changes at home that she’s trying do deal with. I like her attitude of fulfilling her priorities and pushing the consequences down the road for later handling.
Buried Angels is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
There are a lot of twists and turns. This is a very cleverly written book. There are a lot of moving parts to this storyline along with quite a few characters. Lottie’s life is once again complicated. Boyd has a few of his own problems. I really enjoyed this book! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
A new Lottie Parker book is always cause for celebration. I’ve enjoyed each of the preceding books and find Lottie a very realistic heroine.
This book starts with many moving parts - the discovery of the frozen torso of a child on the railroad tracks, the discovery of a small skull behind the plaster in a house, and a case of spousal abuse. Oh, and Boyd is recovering from leukemia and wants to return to work, but their new boss doesn’t want them working together.
We hear from a variety of characters. Not just Lottie and Boyd, but the boy who found the torso, the woman who found the skull, a voice from 20 years earlier among others. And unlike some other police procedurals, all is not happy with Lottie’s squad.
The book has a constant tension as we move quickly from scene to scene. I was engaged from the very beginning. You’ve got a lot of bad parents and nasty marriages here, so parts of the book can get uncomfortable.
This is a great series and this book continues the strong trend. The book works as a stand alone but I do recommend reading the books in order.
My thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.
Brilliant as usual. The superb Patricia Gibney never disappoints and the Lottie Parker series just gets better and better. The storyline had many twists and turns but it all came together in the end. I could not put this book down and found myself dreaming about it and waking up in the night to resume reading. I have only one question, “Why are there so many references to ‘sweaty’ people?”
I loved this book and am very grateful to be given the opportunity to give my opinion. Thank you Patricia Gibney, Bookouture and Netgalley.
Insert your favourite superlative here! That was super enjoyable. Book 8 of the DI Lottie Parker series is the best one yet. A young woman finds a skull behind the walls of a house she and her husband are planning to renovate. No sooner has she reported it to the police than she disappears. Two young boys aged 11 find a torso on the railroad tracks before school one morning. It appears to have been frozen. There are more grisly finds and yet they don’t all belong to the one body. More people disappear. Buckle up, there’s still a long way to go.
This was a very convoluted story, with many characters, that began around twenty years ago when a mother and her two daughters were butchered. The husband and the son were never seen again. These are just some of the threads. It’s impossible to describe the plot succinctly. Suffice it to say the tension was palpable throughout the story and kept you turning those pages. There was a bunch of families that seemed fishy and somehow involved with this mess of a case. There were secrets being kept, lies told and plenty of menace creeping. There was infidelity, jealousy, betrayal and a hint of madness.
This book ticked all the boxes for a fast paced thriller. I couldn’t guess who was doing what until the author neatly joined the dots. The only people not under suspicion were those already dead. While this is going on, Boyd who is now engaged to Lottie, is having treatment for leukaemia and Lottie is in trouble with her new Superintendant. We will have to wait until the next book to see how those things pan out. 4.5 stars rounded up for this excellent book.
A well written book with different storylines converging in a fitting conclusion. Gets somewhat confusing in the middle due to too many characters but everything is explained during the course. A good one. 4.5 stars
Buried Angels DI Lottie Parker Book Eight – Patricia Gibney
Oh my, I was so looking forward to this so when I saw that I had been approved by #Netgalley it made me do my happy dance (you really don’t want to see it lol). I couldn’t wait to open it, so I cleared the decks of literally everything that I could to let me curl up undisturbed and I’m glad I did as I read it in one sitting. Consider yourself warned!!
I am so invested in the DI Lottie Parker series; Lottie lives and works in Ragmullen which IMO is getting to be almost as dangerous as Black Rock Falls in D. k. Hoods Deputy Kane & Sheriff Alton series. Since the death of her husband Lottie and the family have had their fair share of… erm… incidents shall we say but nonetheless Lottie & her mad brood manage to drag themselves out of bed and get on with it.
When we catch up this time it seems as if Lottie has pulled up her big girl panties and made some huge decisions, staying clean must be the absolute best of them. I am so pleased that in this instalment she has finally given in to what we have all known for ages that she loves Boyd and the kids seem to be ok with it too (for the most part). We know there’s secrets being kept, talks to be had as well as serious illness and demanding careers for to be dealt with but I am certain it will work itself out.
As soon as we read about a pregnant young woman finding a 20 year old child size skull in what is going to be her new home, then two young boys flying a drone before school find thawing body parts we know we have a rollercoaster of a story on our hands. It isn’t long before they realise that these two cases are somehow related, and DI Lottie Parker is SIO on the and case. It wouldn’t have been so bad if she only had to watch her back from the bad guys it seems as if there could be some unresolved tensions at work with her new boss.
I don’t want to do a re-hash of the book as I tend to waffle and give away too many spoilers if I do. I enjoyed that the author as always has spoken about people/things that are relevant to now; a young mum who is an ‘Influencer’ as well as hidden and historical abuse with so much innocence lost and spoilt.
If you enjoy a police procedural with a female protagonist who is strong wilful (in a good way) but has a heart of gold start right at the beginning with The Missing Ones I promise that you won’t be disappointed.
Read for an honest review. Thank you Ms Gibney, Netgalley and Bookouture
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an egalley in exchange for an honest review.
Taking place six months after the events of book 7 Broken Souls, Lottie and Mark Boyd appears to be rock solid in their relationship even with a few challenges in their way. There is still the challenge of where the pair will make their home and the recent death of Boyd's mother has them wondering where his sister Grace should live. Not to mention that Boyd himself is on sick leave and Lottie misses the guidance that he lends on the job. Even with Cynthia Rhodes no longer breathing down her neck, Lottie is dealing with a new boss watching her every move and a disgruntled detective on her team. Oh, and there is daughter, Katie who has a bit of news for her mother that she knows Lottie will struggle with. So life is pretty normal for DI Lottie Parker. When Lottie and her team get a call to investigate a series of human remains, it leads down a road that she could never imagine.
As always, I was hooked because of Patricia Gibney's ability to keep the action going and making all the multiple characters quickly link together. This is certainly one of my favorite DI series and I am already excited to see where Patricia Gibney will take us next.

Patricia Gibney does it again!! Lottie Parker and her team solve an impossible case that just keeps getting worse and weirder by the minute! I couldn’t tell who did it until the very end. Love those kinds of books!! I also loved the family side of the story because real life doesn’t stop even for an investigator.
Another electrifying case for Detective Lottie Parker and her crew, meaning another fantastic read by Patricia Gibney. In the eighth installment of the series, Lottie seems to be coming undone, family stress, health concerns for her fiancee and a heartbreaking case that is constantly haunting her.
The book had me hooked from the very first sentence,( let's be honest, this series always does!), all the way until the last word. Always a rollercoaster ride, trying to figure out the "bad guy", amazingly these books, and after eight in the series, are always fresh and enthralling.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of the book.
#Netgalley #buriedangels
I love Detective Lottie Parker books and was delighted to receive a copy of the newest book in the series. Buried Angels did not disappoint in the slighest. The newest plot focuses on the discovery of a dismembered corpse. I loved this book and read it over the course of one day!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC
One of my favourite detective series, featuring Lottie Parker. This was a really good read and filled with new and interesting characters. Lottie's personal life is beginning to settle down and the future looks brighter for her and Boyd. I would recommend this series and thank Net Galley for my ARC.
Another dramatic case for Lottie and her team with family secrets, lies and deception at the core of the storyline.
I hope to see Boyd back to work soon, I missed the dynamic between him and Lottie.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Oh Ragmullin! I swear this Irish town has the highest crime rate in the world! If it was a real town it would be on my bucket list of must visit, a bit macabre I know.
I started this book yesterday afternoon and finished it last night, in this Patricia Gibney never disappoints. I will say that I’m thankful DI Lottie Parker seems to be getting her life under control. This book was heart breaking, so many innocent lives lost, so many twists and turns and tragedy. This is why I love this series, you never know what is coming, when you believe a line won’t be crossed....it is, this is what keeps me turning the pages and waiting for the next instalment. This one hasn’t been published yet and I’m excited for the 9th book!
Love the Lottie Parker and Boyd novels. Great writing and premise. Page turner. Amazing characters. Plenty of suspense to keep me guessing. Definitely look forward to her next offering. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
Yet another fantastic installment in the Lottie Parker series. Gruesome and wild crimes, the past literally coming back to haunt you.
Thank you Netgalley for my ARC copy for my honest review.
Buried Angels by Patricia Gibney is the 8th book in the DI Lottie Parker series, and it keeps getting better and better.
Jeff Cole has inherited a dilapidated house from his Aunt but, he refuses to get a builder in he wants to do himself with his girlfriend Faye Baker. So, Faye decides to start on the front room. She starts ripping down the old wallpaper and plaster off the wall when Faye finds a skull of a child that was hidden in the wall. Who is this child and what happened to them? Where is the rest of her body?
On the way to school best friends Gavin Robinson and Jack Sheridan are on the way to school when they take a detour as Jack has is Drone with him and lets it fly over the railway tracks. What they find with haunt them. They find frozen human body parts. DI Lottie Parker is the Senior SIO on both cases. Are these two cases linked in some way?
This is another cracking episode in the DI Lottie Parker series set in Ragmullin Ireland. As usual she his try to juggle her work life with her personal life with. Her boss giving her a hard time and her kids want to go and live in NYC. But with her determination she gets the job done. Not always though with exceptional results.
Like the others in this series I loved this. I like the authors style of writing. It is a gripping complex thriller, but it flows easily. With lots of twists and turns that will keep you engrossed throughout.
Lottie Parker is working as a DI for the Garda Siochana (police) in her home town of Ragmullin. Both her personal and professional lives seem determined to make her life increasingly complicated. The positive news is that she has successfully managed to battle the booze and has finally found (admitted to) love with Boyd. However,
Boyd is now ill,
her new boss is determined that they cannot work together,
her eldest is attempting to flee to the US,
her other children continue their policy of telling her nothing about their lives
and there’s a new serial killer on the loose.
So, situation normal really for Lottie!
I’ve read all of the books so far in this series and I have enjoyed how Lottie has slowly grown in many respects – she has learned to limit her alcohol intake and to trust her instincts. However, like many people, she is learning as she goes and this is one of the more likeable aspects of Lottie.
The storyline jumps between the present investigation and various characters involved along with frequent glimpses of past events through the eyes of the victim. Of course, as often the case with Gibney’s novels, what you is happening is not always the case and once again, Gibney has written another fast-paced and twisty thriller, that is definitely worth a read.
I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley by Bookouture in return for an honest review.
