Why She Died by J.G. Roberts is the third installment of a series focused on Detective Rachel Hart, and it is, quite possibly, the best yet. I would suggest that this can be easily read as a standalone, as much background information is provided throughout the narrative to bring you up to speed.

DI Rachel Hart is called to investigate when a young woman is found hanging from a tree the morning following her shift working as a shot girl at a local nightclub. While the investigators initially assume suicide, it quickly becomes apparent that the young woman has met with foul play. As DI Hart and her team question those who knew the victim best, the DI is also suffering with the knowledge that her twin sister, Ruth, has gone missing from her care home without a trace, making her burden twofold. And then the team discovers the body of a second woman...

This is a pacey police procedural that will keep the reader emotionally engaged and invested in the mindset of an empathetic and genuinely likable protagonist. The story of DI Hart is far from over, and I cannot wait to see where it will lead next.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.

I sometimes tell myself that I should cut back a bit on reading. Every spare moment, I spend with my nose in a book and I still enjoy it thoroughly. Once in a while, I actually listen to myself and don't subcribe for certain blog tours. It's not because I don't want to reads those books and it actually hurts when I can't take part. Keeping my promises is very important to me, so I have to say no every now and then.

But very often I still say YES, please. And honestly, when I look back and see all those masterpieces I had the honour to read, i would not have missed them for the world. Who cares about sleep when authors and publishers treat you to all those goodies? :)

Talking about masterpieces. This one deserves a place in that category!

A best friend. A boyfriend. People you often have known for many weeks, months or even years. You trust them. You love them. You want to spend time with them. You would do anything for them. But how well do you really know them?? Were they worthy of your time, your friendship, your love?? Maybe they are. Maybe they aren't.

The book is very intriguing and addictive. Once I started, it was almost impossible to stop.

The author has a great writing style and is a wonderful storyteller. I can't wait to see what happens next. 5 stars.

Thank you, J.G. Roberts and Bookouture

This series just gets better and better! I have to give credit to J. G. Roberts. Many possible suspects arise in this story. The reader continues to change their mind the as to who is guilty with each page...

DCI Hart is brilliantly portrayed and digs in to get to the bottom of a crime involving a student, Hannah, who has an ambitious nature... Abi, Hannah's best friend, helps in whatever way possible to find justice for Hannah.

A great mystery with plenty of possibilities.. I have read the first two books, also, but this can definitely be read as a standalone.

An awesome read - Many Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a fast, exciting read!

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

Detective Rachel is called to a scene in the woods when Abi who usually runs with her best friend Hannah is found and Abi is shock because Hannah has everything to live for.

The building tension in each chapter as Rachel dives into Hannah life and who would want to kill her and there plenty of people who have it in her but when another young woman is found she wonder if there a serial killer at play or is someone trying to throw her off into another direction.

Detective Rachel is a flawed character who is determined to solve the case as she struggles with trying to find her missing sister and fearing that every time she called to a scene prays it’s isn’t her sister.

Good mystery

This was my first Detective Rachel Hart book, but it won't be my last! Normally I like to try to read detective series books in order, but it's not necessary with this book - it is a really good standalone book.

This is more of a traditional detective story/mystery than a psychological thriller and that suits me just fine. Ultimately and most importantly the book delivers on the title and has a good explanation for "why she died" (and isn't that why we read all these books, anyway!?) which I won't spoil here. Rachel is a smart and accessible heroine. If you liked Nancy Drew you'll also like Detective Rachel Hart. The tone reminds me somewhat of Nancy Drew and I was just waiting for a description of a "titian haired beauty" or Ned Nickerson. I love British police procedurals (both TV shows and books) and this author does a good job of combining procedural elements with women's fiction elements. Overall a book right up my alley. :)

Thanks to Bookouture, J.G. Roberts and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review. I'll be checking out the first Detective Rachel Hart book next.

I have not read either of the previous books in this series, which explains why I felt as if I had come into the story in the middle in many ways. It wasn't apparent to me how Rachel, who treated her team unkindly at times and spent the rest of her time worrying about her missing sister and becoming hysterical whenever the body of a woman was reported in case it was her, managed to hold down such a responsible job.

This was slow to get going and, at the beginning and then at one point later on, had sections which played with the linear timeline apparently simply to confuse, since it didn't really add anything to the plot. The ending was frankly incredible (and I don't mean that in a good way). Also, while I'm being picky

SPOILERS

the definition of a serial killer is three or more victims, so a certain character's cunning plan to murder a prostitute in case he later needed to kill Rachel's sister, thus ensuring the police would look for a serial killer, makes even less sense than the author perhaps intended.

Also, could a young woman, even one with martial arts skills, really strangle a rugby-playing young man?
