I received an ARC from Leafwood Publishers via NetGalley. This review is my personal opinion.
In this book, Jessica Herberger takes the last supper as the perfect example of how friendship should look like, with an honest and candid story she opens up on her journey in finding her community for breaking bread, the practical and easy advice she has followed and how we can put them into practice. I like that this book gives you a clear idea on how friendship should and could be with the help of God and a clear determination on upon op and let people in, the importance of letting go the ideas or maybe who we think can’t be part of our community for breaking bread. This book could be a great opportunity to share with friends or maybe to make new friends.
I couldn't appreciate the effort the offer went to in order to make this book available to the masses. I felt so encouraged and loved, and really enjoyed reading through something I could relate to so immensely. I loved that she related community and friendship to food as those are two of my favorite things!
I appreciated the author's openness and willingness to talk about her own struggles and how she's worked through them. I feel like that's the reason for trial: to help others who may travel that road in their own lives and help them through it - help them see they're not alone.
So many books about Communion and the Last Supper. What sets this one apart is Herberge's focus on the friendships around the table where Jesus sat with his disciples. She invites readers to practice hospitality and true kindness as we engage with others.
This is both a text and a workbook, with practical assignments at the end of each chapter. You will be led step by step through the reasons for, benefits of, and how-tos of spiritual friendships that ward off contemporary loneliness. Recommended for women with friends, women studying about drawing others into their circles, and for those who are forming new friendships along the way.
Break Bread Together: Finding True Friendship at the Last Supper by Jessica Herberger was a book about intentional friendship using the Last Supper as a guide.
It can be discouraging with all the electronics and "let's get together" never happening. The book takes a closer look at praying for guidance in seeking out deeper friendships. It encourages following Christ's example of meaningful relationships.
It was an interesting read, modeled by Jesus at the Last Supper, with the author's insights. The basis of building a community of long lasting friendships.
I received a complimentary ebook copy from the publisher, through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Enjoyed my time spent with this book, and have placed it on my re-read list for deeper study. Personally took away quite a few lessons, and pray that all who read are blessed with the same.
In Break Bread Together, Jessica Herberger shares some truths I've known for nearly two decades - not all friendships are the same, friendships aren't always organic, and breaking bread with people builds community among friends. In sharing these truths, however, the author uses the Last Supper as a teaching tool - and it is a brilliant add to my understanding of friendship, relationship and community.
Her premise is simple: "It turns out the Last Supper is not just a beautiful picture of community. It is an actual road map showing us how to nurture a Breaking Bread Community in our own lives!"
Again, what a brilliant and meaningful comparison.
Break Bread Together is organized somewhat like a good bible study. The author shares her personal history and struggles, some scripture and insight, then follows it up with questions and a guided prayer. It is a great format for the topic. The road map is laid out in well-scoped chapters, each based on a different aspect of the Last Supper scriptures, and covers topics on initiating friendships, expecting hurt, sharing biblical wisdom and building lasting communities of love. Lots of good stuff in here.
The writing is engaging, the topic deeply considered and the suggestions meaningful and complete.
I loved this book. It would be an amazing book club read, or even a great part of a small church group wanting to go deeper in relationship with one another. Likewise, it lends itself equally well to a more intimate and personal read as part of a greater understanding of Jesus, the Last Supper and our mandate to be in community with others. Definitely a five-star read!
This review is based on an advance copy read.
This book has changed my perspective on the Last Supper. Y’all the way we sweat and coax people with gifts and all to get people to be our friends (picture the work we put in) is the same way we should work for a relationship with God. Such an uplifting book.
WOW. This is a book that I didn't know I desperately needed until I picked it up. I am so thankful I was able to read through this. Jessica is so encouraging and relatable as she talks about our need for community in the way God desires. Throughout each chapter, she points everything to The Last Supper and how Jesus interacted with his friends. She uses Him as an example of how we can bless and be blessed by our Breaking Bread Community in deep and intimate ways. At the end of each chapter, she dedicates a portion to reflect on the Scripture used by asking questions, creating an action, and respond in prayer. This would be a great study to do together in a community group, although it is great to read as a personal study (like I did). This is such a great resource that I will probably use time and time again. Thank you Jessica for sharing your wisdom and heart through this book. I pray that will transform our lives as we seek to find our own Breaking Bread Community!
