This book literally transports you to the English seaside of Sea Salt Bay where Sadie returns to help out her Gammy after her grandfather passes away. A nice easy escapism read with a hint of romance!
It was Ok. Not what I expected. Thought it was going to be more about Sadie working at the waffle house and all the problems she would face as she learns to run the business. Sadie only worked there for two maybe three days. It felt like most of the book was the family fighting about what to do with the business. The book was more sad than a fun and cute story. Didn't the family notice anything about April? It's not like she changed overnight. Found the beginning slow and boring. I'm not really sure why Sadie insisted on being a teacher. The whole family was overbearing. Wasn't really a fan of any of the characters. I highly doubt April would have written Sadie out of the will. She would have forgotten why she was mad at Sadie. It was hard to believe Sadie was still pining over a man she hasn't dated in over three or four years. It just didn't get romance vibes between her and Declan. Sadie's girlfriends were the worst out of everyone and didn't actually seem like actual friends. They were completely rude to Declan and his girlfriend.
Give the book a try, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I thought it was going to be like the author's previous books. I did enjoy the quick mention of the donkey sanctuary. I do look forward to reading more by the author since I enjoyed her previous books. I love the cover of the book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Distracting enough for this trying time but I didn't really enjoy this. The story was too predictable and the characters didn't really click for me. Once again a romance where people fall into each others arms a little too fast for my taste.
Family drama and romance with a quaint English seaside town....everything you need for a cozy, summer read. The characters were real and like able.
If you want a feel good easy romance story, this is a book you should pick up.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read and review this book for my honest opinion.
Amazing book, loved the story line! Actually made me want to go on holiday to the beach! Tilly has done it again! This book a must read relaxing in the garden with a refreshing drink!
In this book we follow Sadie who lives in a small tourist town so Sea Side Bay. Everyone here essential has a business that is somehow connected to tourism but she wants more from life. She at the age of 26 joins teacher training in an attempt to mould tiny young minds into something better but fails disastrously at it. Suddenly her grandfather dies leaving her grandmother in shambles. They both had a very old waffle house ( as indicated by the title) which is almost historical to the town. Sadie's family members decide to sell it off even without her grandmother April's opinion. Sadie is determined that this is a wake up call and is determined to save the waffle house. In the course of time she almost dies ( read to find out how) and also breaks up someone else's relationship. I enjoyed this story so very much. I finished it in 3 days and when I did I just smiled like an idiot. The cover is absolutely stunning. The themes of emotions, family, career, second chance love, sibling relationship, grandparents and their grandchildren relationship and so much more is stuffed into some pages. The chapters are a bit long but won't bore you for a second. The language is very lucid and I loved the narration a lot. Even the love story was super cute and just the right amount of steamy. The relationship tiff between Sadie and her ex boyfriend cum bestfriend Declan is shown in such a relatable light that you may find it very non fictional. I loved the dynamic between Saide and her grandmother April who has stared suffering from Dementia and also Sadoe and her siblings Lucy and Ewan ( mainly Ewan). Kat ( Ewan's wife) is also such an Important character. All the characters are so well developed. The story takes over a period of about 2 weeks and so much happens that it fills you with excitement. Nothing was predictable. I enjoyed the book through and through.
I unfortunately quit reading at 43%. The pacing is unbearably slow and each paragraph so repetitive. You could summarize everything that's happened so far within one chapter.
When Sadies beloved Grandpa dies her Grandma April is naturally devastated. They owned The Waffle House on the pier at Sea Salt Bay and ran it together for years.
April’s family decide in the wake of his death that she will no longer be able to run the Waffle house alone and that it should be sold.
Only Sadie believes that returning to the waffle house might do April good, that it might return some focus to her life. Unfortunately April seems to be suffering from more than grief and Sadie might just have to admit she has made a mistake.
Really enjoyed this - the characters were all really strong and the setting was so well described I felt I could see Sea Salt Bay.
I’m actually overwhelmed with how great this book is. I really loved everything about it and how well it was written. The characters were all likeable to & the storyline with Sadie’s Grandma was heartbreaking. I’m super glad about things with Sadie & Declan and that she remained happy with Luke as I felt so bad for him after his past heartbreak. Loved the setting of the beach and the small quint village which I’m glad was in it as it set the mood really well. Definitely recommend to anyone.
Another fabulous book from Tilly Tennant. This is the kind of book I have been gravitating towards in lockdown, lots of cosy escapism. I adored the setting of this book and all the characters and of course the waffle house! Can't say I have ever read about one before or even visited one but it is now on the future to do list!
Highly recommend if you are looking for a cosy summery read!
This is another fantastic and fun book from Ms. Tennant. I enjoyed this book from the start! I feel like the characters are my friends.
Great summer read! Story was not too deep, just a simple, fun, light, easy read.
The Waffle House has been a landmark in the cozy seaside town of Sea Salt Bay for over 50 years. Sadie's Grandparents owned it and her and her friends and family have grown up loving the wonderful food her grandma always gave them. When her grandfather dies suddenly, the fate of the Waffle House is up in the air. Grandma insists she can continue working there, but the family notices that she isn't as alert and focused as she once was. With everyone else having careers and families of their own, it is up to Sadie to save the Waffle House. But can she give up her training as a teacher to take over the business, and what about the new guy in town, Luke, not to mention her teenage love Declan? So many what ifs, can anything finally work out for Sadie?
I loved the characters and the fun banter they shared. Really enjoyed this story.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
When Sadies grandpa dies, her grandma April is left alone to grieve and run their waffle house on the pier.
Only soon it becomes apparent April is struggling with her health without knowing it while Sadie helps out to keep the waffle house going she sees her ex love Declan with his new girlfriend around while she gets to know and date Luke a newcomer to the area.
After Declan and his girlfriend split up April finds herself torn, should she stay with Luke or go back to Declan?
But most importantly can she keep the Waffle house going?
This was a fun new read and I loved the unique setting being a waffle house as I've never read about one before. The storyline about dementia is very relatable to many of us I feel and the old love new love storyline too Sadie was a great head strong character and I liked the fact she didn't give up on keeping the family's past business alive despite everyone going against the idea. A sweet summer treat of a book!
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
Sadie is feeling a little lost in life, and when a tragedy befalls her family, it's time for her to take a step up and see if she's got what it takes.
The pacing of the plot can sometimes be tough, but this is a great text for escaping current reality for a beachy town, family drama, and the plight of feeling rollercoasters with ex-boyfriends. This would be a great book for those who like summer reads and complicated romances.
Thank you #NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!
This was a nice story about a nice family in a nice coastal town. All the characters are likable and the reading was quick. There was romance, but no crimes. I wouldn't really call it a cozy mystery, but definitely a cozy. This is a feel-good story for a quiet evening in front of the fire
Yes again this was another lovely book by Tilly Tennant.
During lockdown I seem to be reading lots of books!
I loved the characters of this book and was desperate to find out what the ending was. Like a couple of the other reviews have said the ending comes together quite quickly and I would have loved for a bit more. Perhaps there will be a follow up?? That would be lovely to keep reading about this super family unit.
Thank you netgalley for another great read.
Great feel good get back to reading book. Tilly’s books are amazing and this one didn’t disappoint. I always feel like I’m there and wanna live in the places and with the people she writes about
I have a weakness for storylines that revolve around the running of sweet treat businesses, Meet Me at the Cupcake Café by Jenny Colgan is one of my all time favourite novels and so these kind of books lure me in just from their titles. I came across The Waffle House on the Pier by Tilly Tennant who is an author whose books I hadn’t read before so I was looking forward to discovering a new author and having my diet put to the test with a novel set in a Waffle House!
The Waffle House at the end of the Pier in Sea Salt Bay has been in Sadie’s family for years but after the devastating lost of her Gampy the future of the business is uncertain. Gammy still wants to carry on the business as normal despite the loss of her husband but she cannot do this alone, Sadie makes a big decision to walk away from her teacher training to help her Grandmother but it isn’t long before Sadie realises running the business with her Gammy is not going to be as straight forward as she hoped.
Sadie is our protagonist in this novel and she is a likeable character who many of us will relate to, she seems to be living in limbo still living with her family and training in a career she isn’t even sure is right for her. She finds herself in some what of a love triangle too and I love how the author managed to keep me guessing the whole way through as to where Sadie’s heart would finally lay it kept me intrigued. I was a little wary of Luke as there seemed to be a little mystery surrounding him and he came on incredibly strong after only two dates.
The strong family bond was felt through this storyline especially between Sadie and her Gammy and also Sadie and her brother Ewan who was very protective of his sister.
I was surprised that my taste buds were not teased by the delicious treats in the waffle house I was expecting to read about the mouth-watering delights the waffle house had to offer but this was probably a god send for my waist line in theory!
I enjoyed this storyline with its unpredictable romance and engaging characters, I will be sure to read future books by this author.
I'm a big fan of Tilly's books and I was excited to hear that she had written a new book. This book has such a beautiful cover, and it has seaside setting, which really appeals to me. I love reading books that are set at the seaside.
This book features Sadie, the youngest daughter in a family who have lived in Sea Salt Bay for a long time. Sadie moved away to University to train as a teacher, but she is having doubts about her choices. When her beloved Grandfather dies, she temporarily moves back home to help out. She has to make a choice about her future, but her family try to make decisions for her instead.
This book is a quick and easy read. It is quite dramatic in places, and also touches upon difficulties of grief and growing older, and uncomfortable decisions. Family dynamics and hierarchy is a big theme in this book. It was a little difficult to remember who was who at the beginning of the book, and I had to go back to remind myself who each character was. It did get easier after the first couple of chapters though.
I liked the will they/won't they scenario of Sadie and her ex boyfriend Declan, which kept me guessing until the end of the book. There were a couple of unexpected events that added suspense and excitement.
Overall I enjoyed reading this book. It would be good to read more books in this location, as this is the second time that it has featured in Tilly's books.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.
Sadie has lived in Sea Salt Bay all her life and loves her grandparents waffle house but then her grandfather dies. She decides to leave her teacher training and go back to help her grandmother run it
