I love the seaside, and I also love a bit of family drama, a lot of romance and characters who feel like friends, so this book was absolutely perfect escapism. The sense of place is so wonderful, you can almost smell the fish and chips and taste the waffles. In fact the whole book just made me want to up and move to Sea Salt Bay. A perfect summer read.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
This was a very cute, feel good story that is one I could see coming to the big screens (would be a fantastic movie)! Sadie is a 26-year old living in a beautiful sea side town trying to find her purpose in life. Right when she thinks she is close to figuring everything out her grandfather dies unexpectedly, throwing everything into turmoil. Sadie and her family don't know how they are going to keep open their beloved Waffle House, ran by her grandparents on the pier for years, when Sadie volunteers to help her grandmother, April, run it herself. They begin to run into problems at the Waffle House while Sadie runs into problems herself, in her love life. From there the author leaves us choosing between two men who might be Sadie's soul mate, an old lover and a mysterious man who almost killed her.
This book and its quaint beachyness hooked me right away. The happy ending left me smiling and warm at heart. The love and importance of family as a theme of the book was heart felt and made for the perfect summer book, especially while unable to go to the actual beach. I liked how the two story lines were Sadie and her love life, and Sadie and her love and adoration for her grandmother. I never got the chance to meet either of my grandmothers and love to read stories in which the grandmother was a big part of the main characters life. The author will definitely leave you wanting more at the end!
I didn't love how all the characters were referred to with their first names, it was tough at the beginning to remember who was who. Sometimes the grandmother was referred to as "Gammy" and other times she was referred to as "April" and at first it was hard to follow, same with the other characters.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book thanks to Netgalley and the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I wasn't really sure about this book. I felt like it was less of a romance than just a general woman's fic, which I don't mind but I went in expecting romance.
Dobt get me wrong, there is romance, it just kind of takes a back burner and it was all a bit too complicated for me. I ended up skim reading a lot of this because I just didn't feel into it. There were too many characters to start off with which always puts me off.
Not a terrible read, well written, just not for me.
A gorgeous story that captures all the charm of a British seaside town, The Waffle House on the Pier is a touching read about a family learning to adapt to life after loss. The will they/won't they between Sadie and Luke (and Declan) had me hooked and the community spirit was relatable, especially as we are living through such strange times. Another belter from Tilly Tennant!
Sadie comes back to sea salt bay for her grandfathers funeral they own the waffle house on the pier.
Grammy is unable to manage the waffle house on her own so Sadie gives up her teaching course to help run it. It all gets too much for grammy, the family set about selling up.
Does Sadie's dream of running the waffle house happen?
Sadie has new man Luke but in the background is old flame Declan.
Who does Sadie end up with?
A beautiful story which I was unable to put down and read in 2 sittings.
A perfect summer read that will not leave you disappointed.
I have now purchased the little village bakery.
Thank you to Bookouture, NetGalley for the ARC
I adore this author, this book has been no different! I love everything about this book.
This definitely hasn’t disappointed.
I found it really difficult to drag myself away from this book and couldn’t wait to get home from work and finish it. The Dorset coast is somewhere I’ve spent many holidays, especially around Weymouth and Lulworth cove, so I felt some nostalgia while I was reading this, and also some longing to go back.
I loved every member of Sadie’s family, and loved seeing how they all pull together in a crisis, despite not always seeing eye to eye. After all, that’s what families do;put aside their differences when faced with a dilemma.
I adored Sadie’s relationship with the new man in her life, Luke. They had chemistry between them from the very start, despite not having the best first meeting. They had me grinning more than once.
Sadie herself was a great character too. She was so doubtful of herself, and wondered constantly if she was taking on too much, and whether she could cope. She’s determined not to give up, and soldiers on even when everything seems to be against her.
Overall, this book had everything I was looking for. It was an emotional rollercoaster at times, with ups and downs, just like real life. It was full of interesting characters, and told a heartwarming story about life after loss, and the importance of family.
A nice feel good story to make lockdown that bit more bearable . . . .
I was really excited to return to Sea Salt Bay, after being introduced to the Seaside Town in Hattie's Home For Broken Hearts. The book cover had me hooked immediately - it is one of the most stunning cover's I have ever seen! It really displayed how much of romantic feel-good story this was going to be.
I really admired Sadie's passion for doing everything possible to keep the Waffle House open, despite her family having quite the opposite opinions of the matter. I understand that Sadie's intentions were not all possible and if they were, still not enough, however I felt myself growing very stressed with the lack of support she was receiving and wanted to jump in to the book immediately to be her cheerleader and a helping hand! A lot of devastation and drama happens throughout this book, bringing many people together and handsome newcomer, Luke, made Sadie's failing life brighten up, eager to get to know the pretty girl he had landed in hospital. Luke was such a generous, kind-hearted man, who really didn't know how wonderful he was and that all came down from having a heart-breaking past himself. His new start in Sea Salt Bay and meeting Sadie, was the beginning of healing his past - now all he need to do was win over her family and ask for their forgiveness.
I really enjoyed this book, as I do with all of Tilly's books. She paints a gorgeous picture of the place's she writes about and was a nice quick read to keep me occupied during these strangest of times. The only critique I would have, is that I wish we had the chance to see more of the Waffle House in it's prime time. I wanted to see it alive and full of customers, I wanted to know more about the delicious dishes Sadie's Gammy and Gampy used to serve, therefore I have my fingers crossed that if we are to visit Sea Salt Bay again, Tilly will give us a little rundown on how much the Waffle House is blossoming now Sadie and her family managed to work it all out!
I was super excited to read this book! The cover was cheerful and the synopsis sounded like just my kind of book. It only took me three days to read this book but only because I was waiting for the romantic-comedy portion. This was more of a drama than anything. It was quite slow moving and not nearly as interesting as I thought it would be. It literally all came to head in the last few pages of the book. It could have been done much better than this.
Pretty disappointing to say the least.
Sadie lives in beautiful Sea Salt Bay, where her grandparents run the iconic Waffle House on the pier. When her grandfather passes away, Sadie quits her teacher training program to help her Grammy keep the restaurant running. As if running a business isn’t complicated enough, she has some unresolved feelings for her ex-boyfriend Declan and things are just beginning to heat up with newcomer Luke. Throw in some family drama and what is Sadie to do?
Tilly Tennant paints a wondrous picture of Sea Salt Bay and the Waffle House on the Pier. Sadie is a well developed character in the beautiful landscape. Her family dynamics are complicated. As the youngest, it seems that the family members would all like to make Sadie’s life choices for her. I would like more interactions between Sadie and her grandmother.
I felt like the book started a little slowly, with a lot of internal monologue from Sadie, without much action. The second half of the book really picks up the pace. I like this book for a quick read and I’ll look to read more books from Tilly Tennant.
Thank you to Tilly Tennant, Bookouture, and NetGalley for the electronic ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Cute! Family drama, romance...a little bit of everything. Definitely a perfect beach read! It's definitely sweet read but not what I would reach for all the time.
I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC of this book to read in exchange for my honest thoughts. This was my first Tilly Tennant book and I really liked it!! As I read it, I am 34 weeks pregnant and this book made me NEED waffles and breakfast food! This book is about a girl named Sadie. She is going to school to be a teacher, but her grandparents, parents and brother have all stayed in Sea Salt Bay and work in the tourist industry and she wonders if she made the right decision for her career. When her grandpa dies and leaves her grandma to run the Waffle House by herself, the family comes together to make a decision. The grandma is very old and not in the greatest health either, so if the historic Waffle House is going to stay open she's going to need some help. Sadie's sister lives in NYC in a career she loves, her brother and his wife have a very busy tourist business as do her parents, so that leaves Sadie. She is also the most emotionally attached to the Waffle House, so she decides to move back and help her grandma run it. The "one who got away", Declan, still lives in the town but he's dating someone else. She also has a dangerous run in with another guy so there's a very cute love triangle. Overall, this book checked all the boxes for me-- idyllic setting, foodie undertones and a lovable main character. The only reason its not a 5 star is because it was nothing super exceptional and I really didn't like how she kept switching back and forth between referring to family members as "Gammy" and "April" (her name) as an example. It made it a little confusing in the beginning and I wish she would've just settled with one or the other. Otherwise, highly recommend!
SPOILERS AHEAD:
Sadie gets hit by a boat driven by a guy named Luke. She ends up being fine and a spark is lit between them! Declan is also in Sea Salt Bay and everyone swears they were meant to be together. He and his girlfriend break up because Sadie and Declan are such good friends and Melissa feels threatened so she has the chance to be with him, but he doesn't want her and she realizes Luke is the one she wants. I like how it all worked out.
As for her grandma, she is showing signs of Alzheimers so if the Waffle House is going to stay open, it really needs to be all on Sadie. She goes back and forth but decides to make that her career and keep their family business going! Woo hoo!
Super cute book! Cozy, heartwarming story about Sadie who returns home to help out her grandmother at the family Waffle House after her grandfather dies. Family drama, romance...a little bit of everything. Definitely a perfect beach read!
Every book I have read by Tilly, always brings a smile to my face. This story got even better when the word waffle house came into view. I liked the fact it was something a bit different from the norm and I am a huge lover of waffles so that helps too. This is Sadie and her families story where we see a devastating loss and the family has to decide what to do about the waffle house. I was expecting to hear more about the waffles but when you read the whole story you can see why. It is more about the family and how they cope with yet more heartbreak amongst other things. There is a little bit of romance in here too that made me smile. If you want to just get away for a bit, I would recommend this read.
Sadie’s grandparents have always owned the Waffle House in Sea Salt Bay, but when her grandfather dies, her family think it's time to sell it. However, Sadie decides she’s going to help her grandmother keep the Waffle House open and plan for the future. Unfortunately for Sadie her plans don’t work out as intended. Can she find a way to keep the Waffle House up and running or will she have to admit defeat?
A lovely fun filled book with a good cast of characters. A story of family and love with a touch of romance, this was an easy and enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed this book. I am a Tilly Tennant fan. It is a lovely story based on family. I loved how protective Sadie's big brother was of her. How Sadie met Luke was lovely. Their first date was great. A fab feel good book
Sadie seems to have an idyllic life from the outside. She was brought up by a loving family by the beautiful beach in Sea Salt Bay, but she didn’t want to be tied down and left it all behind, including her boyfriend Dec to study and make a better career than just catering to holiday makers. With hindsight, she realises it wasn’t such a brilliant idea, Dec has moved on and Sadie realises he was the one that no other man has matched up to since. She seizes the opportunity to join the family business when her grandfather passes on, leaving her grannie with no one to help her run the waffle house that has been part of the family for years. I must say I did think Sadie came across as indecisive and immature – I’m sure that was the point but it was irritating and made it difficult to sympathise with her hence the rating. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Waffle House on the Pier by the lovely Tilly Tennant is an absolutely wonderful read which will bring you joy, happiness and some heart wrenching moments. In The Waffle House on the Pier we meet Sadie, a trainee teacher and I could so relate to how she was feeling with the pressures and issues in her teacher training. They were so true and I think many teachers have experienced these problems during our time in training. Teaching is not for everyone and everything was so spot on with regards to why Sadie did not like teaching.
Sadie feels that her life is in turmoil, she is not enjoying her chosen career path, her boyfriend Dec she was with before she left for university has moved on and her grandfather has very sadly passed away. When Sadie returns home to Sea Salt Bay she realises how much she has missed her family and her home and she decides that her future lies in The Waffle House that her Grandmother ran with her Grandfather. Sadie knows it is too much for her Grandmother (we sadly later learn April has dementia) and with the help of her family she takes on The Waffle House. Sadie's family is such a close tight knit unit and they are always there for each other and to help each other out.
The Waffle House also explores Sadie's relationships with her ex-boyfriend, and her new boyfriend, Luke, who she meets in the Bay. Lots of twists and turns as Sadie does not know how she feels and what she wants. However, Luke turns her life upside down (in a good way!), makes her so happy and gives her the future she wants and deserves. Sadie is now the new owner of The Waffle House, has a wonderful new boyfriend and an amazing bright future ahead.
The Waffle House on the Pier is a great read, taking us to a wonderful place where the sun shines on every page. Thank you for a lovely lovely read. A book full of laughter, love and cheer - a perfect book to read to make you smile and transport you to all the delights of the seaside! Now I want to go to Sea Salt Bay and visit The Waffle House and eat waffles and ice creams on the Pier!
Just close your eyes, take a deep breath and imagine the warm gritty sand between your toes, the gentle lap of waves against the shoreline, the cries of seagulls and the warmth of the summer sun on your winter skin. Inhale familiar seaside smells of sun cream, fish and chips and candy floss and you will find yourself transported to the little seaside town of Sea Salt Bay, home to the Waffle House on the Pier.
For me this is such a sparkly summer read, evoking my own childhood memories of trips to the seaside, that first glimpse of the sea and despite the fact I hate them (sorry!) the seagulls cries. These images conjure up happy memories and take me to a trouble free place in my mind where I can indulge myself in a world beyond reality where only good things happen. This sweet, if predictable novel allows you to do exactly that, lose yourself in the lives of Sadie and Gammy and family whilst they deal with the consequences of the death of their beloved grandfather. The Waffle House has been a firm fixture in their lives and that of Sea salt bay for a very long time so it’s heartbreaking to think they might finally have to shut up shop. Gammy, whilst full of high spirits and energy despite her advancing years cannot possibly manage to keep the Waffle House running single handedly. The death of her husband has hit her hard and with other members of the family busy running their own seaside businesses what is the fate for this well known and loved establishment??
The only member of the family who could possibly save the day is Sadie, the baby of the family and as such is treated like one, having had so many false starts in life and love that she isn’t really taken seriously. As a trainee teacher she is feeling trapped in a job that she has no real desire to do and is finding that keeping control of a classroom is maybe beyond her capabilities. Coupled with pining for ex boyfriend Declan, whom she believes was the one that got away, Sadie is floundering. Her sudden decision to quit yet another career and help Gammy keep the Waffle House open could be the best or worst decision she’s made to date. Plain sailing or more of a rollercoaster ride?? That’s for you to find out!
With ups and downs, fun and laughter and a good dollop of romance thrown in I found this a lovey enjoyable read. I wanted to visit the Waffle House myself, indulging in one of their delicious calorie laden offerings, eavesdropping on the conversations between Sadie and Gammy, whose mental health is clearly in decline. Plus the arrival of potential new love interest, Luke could prove to be the cherry on top of the cake (or waffle)and banish Declan forever from Sadie’s thoughts.
All the characters are likeable and they have a great sense of family and the importance of sticking together, helping each other out, none more so than Sadie. Her effervescence and kindness and love for her grandmother really shine through making this such a feel good read. The love triangle element keeps you guessing as to which direction Sadie’s life is going to take although it’s fair to say your grey matter won’t be taxed very much!
With a predictable happy ending The Waffle House on the Pier is pure escapism and has all the necessary ingredients to bring a smile to your face. I can’t believe this is my first Tilly Tennant read and it definitely won’t be my last.
My thanks as always to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read.
