Art Workshop for Children is an excellent resource for anyone who works with young people. Easy to follow instructions for creating spaces that embrace process art.
I love these types of books that get my children’s creative juices flowing and I was glad to add this to my library! Great child led art ideas. Great for younger kids.
This was an interesting book. I appreciated that it focused on creative thought and seemed to be a great resource for parents and teachers to help guide children toward exercising a focus on creativity rather than just an expected singular outcome.
Always looking for a new ideas for kids. This is an actual book with fun ideas and not something you have to go on a screen to find. We need more books like this.
A great set of exercises and tutorials for artists - not just children, and a nice distraction given what's currnetly going on in the world. Really enjoyable, and solid.
Lots of full colour pictures, with a great mixture of easy to follow projects. Brillaint for inspiring mini artists.
Given the times that we live in with the covid 19, it is great to see a book that centers around creativity and imagination. Our children spend a lot of time doing schooling from home via the internet, and not being able to have a lot of physical contact with others. This book targets the creativity of children in the younger age group with lots of mini workshops painting, building and making things out of cardboard, scrapes and color. Letting their imagination and ideas run free. And when this crisis is over these workshops can be broaden to include groups and displays of art
Lots of easy examples of ideas to keep children entertained in a creative way for awhile
First, I think the reader should go into this book knowing that the art room for kids that the authors envision is a best-case scenario- whichever author's home workspace is shown in the book, it's wonderful and amazing, but I feel not everyone will have the space and/or resources to have such a lovely area set up for this purpose. That's okay, the reader will still find lots of good ideas and inspiration here. The projects in this book are based more on the process than the finished result, which allows for a lot of creativity, and quite honestly, it all looked like fun and I wouldn't mind playing around with these projects myself. Adults should be aware that this is messy stuff going on, but there are tips throughout on preparing your space to help contain that mess. The age range for most projects is pretty broad- preschool ages can definitely join in, and many projects will still be fun for older kids, up to 12 at least, I'd guess. The main ingredient here is paint- I believe all the projects use paint, though many projects use mixed media and/or repurposed materials to create the finished pieces. Each project has guided instruction for getting started, the process of creating the art, and variations to try when doing the project again. A good book for home use, even better for group use, such as classroom, daycare, after school programs, etc.

I love this book which uses Reggio approach techniques and child-centred learning at its heart.
I work as an art facilitator with kids, and my colleague is an art therapist and early years Reggio educator.
This book is great for anyone starting out with play-based and child-centred learning, art therapy, early years and anything along those lines.
Any preschool will find this book invaluable for planning activities, and they also work well at home with your own little ones.
The projects are process-focused, engaging for little ones, and include great hints about the conversations you can have with the children during the process. It is a lot of fun with great coordination, confidence and communication value.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
"Art Workshop for Children" is full of wonderful process art projects for younger children. The projects are easy to do and call for very basic materials. I liked the it also included essays about creativity.
Some of the projects are very basic, but the art theory/reflection pages in between the projects are useful to parents and teachers. They offer some good prompts for adults to deepen young minds' thinking without taking control of the children's art.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for a digital ARC for the purpose of an unbiased review.
This was a very interesting book. It had a good take on art, for children. We really enjoyed reading it and using it to implement art ideas and techniques, with Ada, as she is at the perfect age to really engage and explore her imagination.
This is a very good book when your are teaching art to kids in a big age range.
I'm doing a summer project and there are kids from age 5 to 12 and with this great book, I got stuff for everybody :)
And it is fun to see how different they are approaching the subjects.
Everybody has a lot of fun and the children are so proud about their art work.
Which makes me proud, so it is a win win situation.
Thanks for letting me read this book
Beautiful, colourful, fun and full of cute kids quotes; Art Workshop for Children seems great at a first glance. But once you get into it, if you have done any sort of kids crafting before (ie: were a child) then there isn't likely to be anything here too special. None of these 25 art experiences are new or original. They are all basic crafts most have seen or done a thousand times. From decorating paper rolls, using corks as stamps, transferring paint from everyday objects to paper, watercolouring, milk carton houses, etc. all the projects here are the standard everyday craft you might have done in school, daycare or at a party as a child.
The reality here is that if you can collect random items around your home that are recyclable or reusable (ie: jars, paper rolls, cartons, cardboard, etc.), get some basic paints, paper, crayons, string, pipe cleaner, etc. then you too can recreate all of the ideas in this book. Cool right? Except that then you realize that this book has only 25 ideas in it; while the internet has thousands more.
As with most creative or 'inspiring' books they are too limited given most people's access to an unlimited number of unique ideas on Pinterest, Instagram, kids blogs, etc. via the Internet. I suppose if you want a colourful fun book to work from or if you are really, really stuck for ideas or need very deliberate step by step instructions; this book might be a good resource. But otherwise I would recommend saving your money to buy fun paints for the kids and surfing the internet for ideas. The one part of this book that is really well done is at the beginning where they talk about setting up an art space for children; and how to encourage messy art without creating a mess. For these tips alone it might be worth the cover price; but certainly not for the 25 art projects included.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
Some super ideas in this book. I found it easy to follow and tried a number of activities. A real great book for use in and out of school.
Lots of great craft ideas to entertain the kids during lockdown! Most materials were pretty easy to find (or have on hand) which was great because we weren’t going to buy supplies during the pandemic.
Art Workshop for Children is a beautifully made book. It’s bright, colourful and filled with great projects, instructions and photos throughout.
I think this book would be an amazing resource for parents and teachers of younger children. I would highly recommend it if you fall in to that category!
It is an interesting guide for parents and teachers into creative world of art. All workshops are simple, easy to do at home and full of joy for children. The books contains a lot of large pictures, so you can choose together with children what to do and in what order. I recommend it to all parents, because these workshops not only boost your child's creativity , but give you and your child time and a great and interesting possibility to connect.
Thanks to the publisher, author and Netgalley for the kindly provided ARC, all opinions are mine.
A wonderful exploration of art, with clear explanations of the educational philosophy underpinnings. Parenting advice that is very specifically target towards encouraging the child's creative process is warm and approachable. I could wish for any images of BIPOC children, though. There is no reason for this book to only include images of white children.
This is a wonderful book. If you want to add an art space in your home or at least add some art time in your children’s lives this book is helpful. You might not have a space for an entire workshop, but this book will be helpful when it comes to ideas in organizing an a artful experience for your child. It is very detailed, which is helpful and there are tons of photos making it great for such a book. You are given supply lists and ideas too.
