This book was absolutely terrifying. I had trouble sleeping one night just cause I kept thinking about a certain image from this book that I could not get out of my head. If you’re really interested in horror, I would definitely recommend this book. However, I did not realize how scary it would be for me. This is why I’m giving it only 3 stars, however others who enjoy this genre may love it!

This was such a gripping story! All I could do was tear into it! It kept my mind constantly trying to find answers! Loved it!

This novel embodies just enough psychological creep factor and mind-fuckery to be very atmospheric and to keep you reading. The format of it being written as someone telling the story online to a forum gives it enough credibility so that, as a reader, you suspend your belief that it's just fiction and begin to believe in the story. The patient that is Joe, is a fascinating case and you want answers almost as much as Parker does. I really like this style of horror where you can insert yourself into the story and have it end with just enough ambiguity to leave you asking questions and thinking about it for days. Looking forward to more from the author.

The premise of the Patient intrigued me so I was thrilled when I got to read a copy of it from NetGalley. From the first page, I was sucked into the story. I flew through this book in just a couple of days and enjoyed this as a psychological thriller. The story could have gone in two different directions and i am glad the author chose the direction he did. I am looking forward to further books by this author.

This book kept my attention. There were no times when I was tempted to skip ahead - I just had to keep reading!

It was a quick read that I didn't dislike but also didn't stick with me. It was thrilling and interesting while reading it, and I wanted to know what happened next, but I also don't think it stuck out to me as something I'd recommend to people.

I really wanted to like this book and I did, just not quite as much as I expected to. Well written but slow at times which caused me to stop reading multiple times and coming back having forgotten much. I finished finally, I didn't dislike but felt more like a chore than a fun hobby to complete

For the fear of spoiling your read I won't tell you how it ends and what the ending has done to the overall opinion of the book.
To begin with I loved the book. I was duly scared, disgusted, hooked and spooked. I liked the 'post like' narration of the story. It felt more with the times.
And then... then the author took the easy way out. Unfortunately. Very unfortunately. Having created such a hype, build up, climax failed to arrive.
The story of young, ambitious, pedigree-raised doctor who believes he is invincible and is capable of impossible deeds is narrated from the first point of view. However, this point of view is very audacious and pretentious. I guess it is realm of young generation to think they are first, pioneers everywhere they go and in everything they do. They think that noone has been there before them.
A unique psych patient who lives his whole live in isolation turns out to be Achiles hill for this superstar young overachiever.
Once again, I loved the book until it started unravelling. Taking the easy (supernatural) way out proved its undoing in my opinion. A psych thriller is best when it is 'real', when it is grounded in real people's emotions and nightmares.
4 stars for failing to keep it real.

I am not sure what genre you would classify this book as - medical thriller, horror, psychological thriller, who knows. But I do know it was quite the ride. The book starts out telling the readers of an on line forum that this is the story of an untreatable patient. And then you read the tale. Parker is a young psychiatrist who gets a job at an asylum and is anxious to cure his patients. At his job he discovers a patient who has been in the asylum for years and has no diagnosis, doctors don't see him, and the people who have cared for him in the past has died by suicide or have left mentally unwell themselves. Parker can't imagine why and so he inserts himself into the man's care, figuring it will be him who saves the man.

I don't read a lot of scary books. But this was scary and the mental part was even worse. But it was a really unique story line that I very much enjoyed. I would highly recommend this quick psychological read.

Through a series of posts Parker recounts his time at a psychiatric hospital in Connecticut and his experience with a disturbing patient who seems to wreak havoc on the staff and other patients of the hospital. The story is disturbing but doesn't get truly creepy until the ending. That's when the horror is revealed.

Devoured this book in one sitting! It was by far one of the scariest stories I’ve ever read. Didn’t like the ending but definitely recommend this book to fans of psychological thrillers and horror.

I enjoyed the written letter format of this book. It made for a good quick read. This novel did have some Stephen King vibes which I really loved.

I am giving it 3-stars because I really liked the beginning. For a moment there, I thought that a new mental disorder was going to be revealed. But nah! There is nothing new in the psychiatric world.

The ending was total garbage. I guess the author wanted to collide the two worlds (...), but for me it didn’t work because, alas! I just don’t believe in that bs!

It would had been better if the patient had turned out to have some special personality disorder like in the movie “Split.” That would’ve been a better explanation...

Totally disappointed with what it turned out to be but I enjoyed the way there.

Thanks Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this title.

The Patient is a super bingeable psychological thriller. It is creepy and mysterious and I definitely recommend that you check it out. I don't want to go over the plot to avoid spoiling it, but I'll just leave the premise as psychiatrist + mystery patient = what's going on???

Thank you to Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publishing for the electronic advanced reader's copy in exchange for my honest review.

4.5 Stars!

This was a wonderfully unique, spooky story!

Parker is a doctor, who is retelling the story, of the scariest patient that he's encountered, during his time as a psychiatrist, via an online blog. Joe has been institutionalized since the age of six and he's now in his forties. All of the hospital staff is petrified of him. Any one that comes in contact with him, meets rather unfortunate circumstances and Parker wants to treat the "incurable" patient.

I loved the unique way the story was told, via the online posting. It made for a fun, spooky read.

I look forward to checking out more from Jasper DeWitt.

A special thank you to NetGalley, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Jasper DeWitt for providing me with an ARC.

Fun fun fun read!!! I hate that this is being compared to The Silent Patient. This is NOTHING like that book. I would put this in the horror genre. Great pick for an October read.

This was a dark, twisty story. It's written in a series of online forum posts, and it feels real and completely crazy at the same time. This has creepy paranormal stuff happening that kept me a little nervous in the back half! I liked the setting, and I think it helped with the scare-factor while reading.

I would definitely recommend this to readers that enjoy paranormal horror!

I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

Through posts to an online forum, Parker tells us his story of treating Joe. Joe, an incurable patient at a mental asylum, a patient who has been locked up since he was a young child.

Unfortunately, I found this story, and its characters, lacking in depth. Although the first half of the story showed promise, it quickly fizzled in the second half, resulting in quite an unremarkable ending.

2 stars I'm afraid ⭐⭐

Special thanks to Netgalley for providing me with this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
