Parker H-, is a freshfaced doctor working in a psychiatric facility. He is smart, hardworking and idealistic. Having lost his mother to severe mental illness, he believes in helping other people and is empathetic to the suffering of the patients, one in particular whom the others have deemed incurable. What he discovers, makes him question is own sanity.

This story is told in the form of online updates to a forum, which was rather unique and made things so much more interesting. The first half of the book was creepy enough for me to stare at the ceiling in the dark, unable to sleep. This was a riveting read, even though some things did turn out exactly as I predicted. The ending was a wee bit disappointing for me because I was expecting more horror and umm… bloodshed? But that could be me.

Overall, this is a unique psychological thriller/horror novel. The pages just fly once you start and is very well written. I will recommend this for anyone who likes this genre.

Thank you Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for the e-ARC.

A 3.4 out of 5 stars.

Genuinely creepy with enough ambiguity that I don't know for sure what is true. Is it supernatural? Is it mental illness?

Quick read! Liked the structure of it as a series of blog posts, and really fascinated by the unfolding story. Who REALLY is Joe? Who is right about him?
I feel, though, that the author was guilty of a bit too much "show don't tell" in his writing. There's a lot of him telling us how to feel about/how he felt about what was happening. Some mansplaining, perhaps, was going on. And when that would happen, I'd get pulled out and feel I was in the hands of a blogger and not an author. But the strength of the overall story pushed it up to three stars for me.

I had expected this to be a psychological suspense novel but I was wrong in that it is more of a horror story. The suspenseful lead up was well done but I felt a bit left down by the end.

An almost arrogant and ambitious psychiatrist is employed at an asylum. He almost immediately becomes interested in a mysterious patient who has been deemed incurable and locked away from other patients and staff. He manages to convince his supervisors to let him try to help the patient and soon finds he is in over his head.

As I said, I did like the slow build of suspense that was brilliantly done by having the psychiatrist use social media to discuss his work with the patient but I did feel let down by the time the psychiatrist visited the mother's house.

4.5/5 stars. I still think about this book and it has been months since I finished it. It was so atmospheric and haunting. I remember contemplating putting it down a few times because the psychological aspect of it was so strong, but I just had to know how it would end. It was a super quick read and very well written. I wouldn’t hesitate to read another book by this author in the future. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

This book is written in journal form. A new doctor gets a job at a mental hospital where a patient is deeply feared. Everyone who comes into contact with this patient quits, commits suicide, or has some very bad things happen to them. This doctor is confident they can get to the bottom of things. But it was more than he ever thought it would be. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Let me be clear- THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
I work at a mental hospital, so the setting of this book already had me hooked going in, but the actual story and twists pushed it over the line. A fabulous thriller! Five stars

This book deals with a patient at a mental asylum that is dangerous in many ways. When a new Doctor tries to
help him, problems at the facility are uncovered. This endangers everyone. A OK read, but a bit predictable.

I was really intrigued to read The Patient and it started off so well. I was immediately engaged and curious how the story would evolve. It was all going well until about a third of the way through when it started to become ludicrous. Okay, I thought, let's see where this could go. The problem was, it went nowhere. The ending was so dissatisfying! I won't give anything away, but this book was all build up, and the conclusion was a real cop out, when it could have been really clever. I've been in a bit of a crime fiction rut, everything seeming a little predictable, but I'd prefer that to a book that leaves its readers hanging at the end! The writing was really engaging and the atmosphere very creepy, I will give the author that, and the premise had me very intrigued, but the sci-fi element and that ending were ultimately deal-breakers for me.

I was able to read this book thanks to NetGalley. I loved it. It was very unique and scary and I have never read anything like it. A young ace psychiatrist decides he wants to cure a patient that no one has been able to treat and few are allowed to even be around. But what will he find when he does? Written from his perspective as he writes for a medical journal, it flashes back to the last in this fast paced thriller. Highly recommend!

I’m sure many readers will pick this one up. Not sure why, but I am unable to get interested in this! It’s not grabbing my attention, so a pass from me.

I really enjoyed this book and read it in a day. It had all the elements I look for in a thriller - well written but accessible and disturbing and page turning. The story of a young boy admitted to a state mental hospital after experiencing night terrors leads to an ambitious new doctor trying to help the man he has grown into. But we don’t know what’s caused the breakdown of this man who has been locked away for decades and what happens to the doctor who finally tries to save him when all others have failed? It was definitely creepy and atmospheric but also cringeworthy in all the best thriller ways. I read a blurb that describes it as “If Stephen King had written The Silent Patient” and that’s incredibly accurate!

This book had so much promise!

The first 90% was amazing! The 10% made me almost become a patient. I was so bummed about the ending that the book was ruined for me.

Great characters, amazing writing... until the end.

3/5.

I love psychological thrillers and especially ones that weave in some supernatural. While I wished I could have read this book in the fall - creepy vibes on point - I won’t hesitate to recommend to my friends looking for fall reads!

Short but powerful book about a psychiatrist taking on the case of his (early) career. A man who has been institutionalized since childhood. A man who seems to cause deaths in his care-givers and doctors without touching them. A man who makes you wonder if he is possessed? or is a demon? or what? Will be a popular book.

I had high expectations for this book as I really enjoy psychological thrillers and psychology in general! I really enjoyed the journal or blog like format the author used.
Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of the Dr's names not being used. I understand it was supposed to show discresion, but if that were the case just say you changed their names. I think I would have preffered that. I also had hoped it was more of a psychological condition and not an actual unknown monster.
I definitely read it quickly and think it could have an audience who really love it and will recommend it to people I think would love it maybe for a horror Halloween read. Thank you for the e-arc!
