A bone-chilling read! Admission: this is not my usual genre, BUT I have followed Pettrey's work for so long and admire her as an author so very much. I ended up listening to this one on audio and yikes--there were times I had to pause it and start it again later. She's an excellent storyteller and if you're into the hair on the back of your neck rising approximately every four minutes.... THEN YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK! Loved the conclusion of The Crushing Depths. Fantastic and suspenseful!

Pettrey ALWAYS does such a great job of creating characters we love, and The Crushing Depths is no exception. Rissi is an independent and talented profiler for the Coast Guard. Mason is a new investigator on the team, but the past they share runs deep. Rissi and Mason spent time together in a foster group home, and Mason had always been her protector. As easy as it would be to fall into old rolls, Rissi doesn’t need help from anyone. She tries to put distance between them to tamper her old rising feelings for him, but then they’re placed on assignment together.

Wild things are happening on an off-shore oil rig. Many think it’s “the curse”, but Rissi doesn’t believe in such things. Environmental activists continue to protest the rig, and Rissi and Mason’s transport helicopter goes down. It is all a coincidence, or something more sinister? Strange deaths, poisonings, and bizarre accidents, the plot will keep you guessing up until the very end.

This book, the second in Dani Pettrey’s Coastal Guardians series, was high-octane action from the first chapter, and just enough beautiful budding romance mixed in to keep every level of romantic suspense lover satisfied. Faith aspects are so seamlessly woven in that they never feel forced or distracting. Did I mention the characters?! I’m really enjoying this Coast Guard team and their shenanigans. I can’t wait to get to know more of them better. Another hit from Pettrey. I couldn’t put it down!

The Crushing Depths is book two in Dani Pettrey‘s Coastal Guardians series. It follows the members of a Coast Guard Investigative Service unit located on the East Coast.

Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers have known each other since they were placed in a children’s home together as children. But for the last ten years, they have lost track of one another. That is, until Mason joined Rissi’s CGIS team.

Rissi and Mason are paired together in order to solve the team’s latest case, a supposedly accidental death aboard an oil rig. But Rissi and Mason are inclined to think it is intentional when their helicopter goes down on the way out to the rig.

I’ve been looking forward to Rissi and Mason’s story from the moment Mason walked into headquarters in the last book. I wish there were more to their story because as much as I may like the other characters, it seemed as if they tried to steal Rissi and Mason’s limelight.

However, there was still plenty of danger, suspense, and mystery. Plus, my curiosity is peaked, especially for Noah’s story. So I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

3.5 stars
I enjoyed the overall plot of this second book in the Coastal Guardian series. There were two mysteries/suspenseful story lines. With two separate plot lines that intertwined the characters, there was a heightened level of action. The continuous pace made the book hard to put down. The romantic tension among the cast of characters was great and added a softer element to the story. I particularly loved Mason and Rissi's story. You learn a little bit about these two characters in the previous book in the series, and book two picks right up at the end of book one. As expected, "The Crushing Depths" has a large cast of characters, some with similar names ("Chase" and "Jayce") and at times it was a mental work out to keep up with them all. This was not a surprise to me (all of the books I've read by Pettrey are like this) and didn't keep me from wanting to read the book, but I was definitely tempted to grab a piece of paper and jot down who was who. Throughout the story there were questions I wanted to know the answer to: Who was the killer? What was the motive? These questions were answered, but not in the way I anticipated. That made for an interesting ending. But it was wrapped up rather quickly. All of the tension, excitement, and quick pace came to a halt with a somewhat undramatic ending, in my opinion, and when I finished I thought, "Did I read that right?" I may go back and read it again, just to see if I missed something. Overall, though, I would recommend the novel for those that like this genre and I plan to continue reading the rest of the books in the series as they come out.

I am a true fan of Dani Pettrey’s books but The Crushing Depths, this second installment in the Coastal Guardians series is a new favorite for me. This book is action packed and fast moving. Once I started reading I didn’t want to put it down. I was gripped by the suspense and intrigue and the unusual setting of an oil rig. I enjoyed getting to read about familiar characters (introduced in book 1) interacting with a host of new characters involved in the mystery. I loved the romance between Rissi and Mason because their backstory made it all the more believable and sweet. I found the ending quite unexpected.

If you haven’t read The Killing Tide (book 1) you may want to read that one first I think this one could be read as a stand-alone, but why would you want to do that? I highly recommend this book! It’s a great summer (or anytime) read!

Also, the cover. I am so taken with the cover. It’s a joy just to hold this book while you read!

The Crushing Depths completely blew me away! I loved this book so much! After reading and enjoying the first book (plus all of Pettrey's previous books), I expected this to be a good read...but it was even better than I imagined.

The characters were so realistic and I loved the romance story. It was sweet to see their love story evolve. ;)

The mystery was top-notch. I found myself trying to figure out the culprit and what was going on. I'm happy to say that while I did guess aspects, there were so many layers and therefore several surprises. Loved it!

All in all, The Crushing Depths was an amazing read and one that I highly recommend. I can hardly wait to read the next book.

Dani's newest release in the Coastal Guardians series, The Crushing Depths, starts off with a bang leading readers on a quite a ride as Coasties, Rissi and Mason, try to discover why a man is dead aboard an oil-rig in the ocean.

I really enjoyed this book, and I thought it was even better than the first book in this series. Rissi and Mason's story has it all, murder mystery, legendary curse, frightening storm, and of course, a love story. It's fun to see these two longtime friends with a deep connection born out of adversity come back into each others lives after such a long time. The mystery throughout the story is fun to solve as the characters piece together more and more of the clues. This story also sets up some other fun interaction for the other characters on this CGIS team, and it's a great lead in for their upcoming stories. This book was quite a ride from cover to cover and I would highly recommend it.

Every page in this book is interesting, and there’s never a pause in the action. This is definitely a “I need to read one more chapter” kind of book. The story is intriguing and suspenseful without being frightening. There was never a time that I was completely sure that I had any of the mysteries in the story figured out and I could not imagine how it would all come together. I was surprised by the turn of events at the conclusion of the book.

The characters are great. Every member of this CGIS team has a great personality, and I loved their interaction. There’s a couple of romantic storylines in this book, but they never overwhelm the story or take over the plot line. Dani Pettrey hit this one out of the park. If this is the beginning of the series, I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Dani Pettrey has been one of my favorite authors since her Alaskan Courage series, each time she has a new book I do not hesitate to purchase it. However this last series, the Coastal Guardians has not been my favorite. I love when books have intertwining stories and characters, along with characters that show up in other books, however I feel like the last two books have had too many characters and too many stories that it takes away from the main story. But with that being said, it overall is still well written and very enjoyable. It felt like the perfect summer read being set in a Coastal town. It is also action packed and a very easy and quick read that sucks you in from the start because you just want to know, who did it. I loved the connection between Rissi and Mason and that it had been so long since they had seen each other and the chemistry was still there. I thought the amount of suspense was just right to keep your attention and continue to make you think about how they would solve the crime and the author didn't give it away in the beginning. I would recommend this book if you love a quick summer suspense read that would be perfect by the beach or the lake.

I thoroughly enjoyed this new read from Dani Pettrey. I had been looking forward to Rissi and Mason's story since the first book in the series, "The Killing Tide" and this did not disappoint. We are treated to not only seeing Rissi and Mason's relationship but two mysteries as well. Both of the mysteries are exciting and each of them surely sets up future books for a couple of Rissi and Mason's teammates as well as introducing new characters who I hope we see again. All in all, this is an exciting and quick read with lots of action. Coastal Guardians book 3 can't come soon enough for me!!

This is the second book in this series and I have to say I liked the first one but I liked this one even more. I think because I am getting a grasp on Dani’s writing style and I know the characters better.

That is one thing Dani does an excellent job doing, laying the ground work for future main characters in previous books. I knew Rissi had a very broken background and Mason was there for her so it was nice to get a better understanding of her story.

The suspense was also well done, never sure what was going on and who was behind the violence, she had me guessing.

If you like romantic suspense you might want to give this one a try.

If you're looking for a high paced suspense mystery that will keep you on your toes, you don't have to look any further. As book two in the Coastal Guardians series, The Crushing Depths picks up the story of Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers. They are called out to an accident that occurred on an oi-rig that killed one of the workers. Friends in a former life and now partnered because Mason has transferred into the Coast Guard Investigators group where Rissi already worked, the two must work together to figure out if the death was truly an accident or whether it was on purpose.

This book was filled with twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. Not only are Mason and Rissi trying to solve the mystery, but because of the past that had originally brought them together, they have to learn to trust one another and sort out what their attraction to each other means for them.

I could not put this book down. I loved reading more about the Coast Guard Investigators team we met in book one. Their stories are intense, and also take place in situations that I don't often read about in a suspense story. I loved entering into a whole new world and reading about new situations. I loved how well the characters knew each other and the history that was brought into this story. It made the characters feel more real and like people I might actually meet on the street.

This is book two in the Coastal Guardians Series but I was able to read it as a stand-alone as I hadn’t read book one, but I aim to go back and do so. I was swept away into the perfect storm of whodunnit and romantic tension between Rossi and Mason who haven’t seen each other in ten years. I enjoyed the originality of the murders taking place on an oil rig and then throw in a tropical storm to amp up the thrill ride. I was enthralled with the workings of the Coast Guard investigators and how they function. The cover is as intriguing as the words between the pages. You will be on a journey you don’t want to put down. I look forward to book three to read more of this team and their playful bantering that made me smile. A perfect balancing act of suspense, romance, Faith, easy comradely, and strong characters.

The Crushing Depths
Coastal Guardians #2
By Dani Pettrey

Rissi Dawson was more than a little shocked when Mason Rogers walked through the office doors as the newest member of her CGIS team. He knew about her past and just what she had gone through during her teen years. She was also in love with him but it has been years since she's seen him.

Mason Rogers has wondered for years about the teen girl he befriended in the children's home they both lived in. But he aged out and couldn't be there for her anymore. Now he and Rissi are working for the Coast Guard Investigative Services and assigned to the same case. But what sounds like a fairly straightforward case quickly evolves it something more and it could cost them their lives.

An accident on an oil drilling platform resulting in the death of a man requires an investigation. But soon a series of accidents has Rissi and Mason convinced that something is going on. Is it sabotage? The work of environmental activists? Or is it the ancient curse that is a local fishing legend? With time and someone or something working against them, Rissi and Mason have their hands full.

Meanwhile, Noah Rowley is working a case of his own, Brooke Kesler, Coast Guard medic, is dealing with a stalker. Brooke has her suspicions of who is behind the escalating harassment but the evidence just isn't there. Doing this as a favor for his sister Noah is more than a little surprised by his protective feelings towards Brooke, but once the case is over he'll have no problem going back to confirmed bachelor status.

As both cases reach a critical point, a tropical storm bears down on the North Carolina coast. Can you say suspense? And a word of caution, don't start this book if you have only a limited time to read, believe me, you won't want to put it down. Experience speaking here, I started it and stayed up until 6:00 am with that all too familiar promise "Just one more chapter," only coming true when there were no more chapters to be read. Whoops, who needs more than half-an-hour of shuteye anyways.

This is yet another page-turner from Dani Pettrey. Though it is the second book in her Coastal Guardians series one could easily read it without having read the first book, The Killing Tide. I do recommend reading the first book so you are properly introduced to all the characters. But get ready for several hours of suspense-filled reading that will totally capture your attention. Fans of Dani's previous work won't be disappointed. If you are new to the author's work but are familiar with Love Inspired Suspense or authors Lynette Eason, Lisa Harris, Rachel Dylan, Nancy Mehl, Lynn, Patricia Bradley, Sandra Orchard, or Lynn Blackburn you should enjoy this book. And don't be surprised if an unexpected twist gets tossed into the mix. Overall a good read to escape the summer heat with.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This was my first read of Dani Pettrey and I will be reading more. Well written Christian Fiction with romance, adventure and mystery. A young team of investigators team up to solve several mysteries. It is down to earth and I was speed reading the last 20 pages to see how it would end - and it was worth it. I recommend this book!

It is a treat to return to Dani Pettrey’s Coastal Guardian Team in Book two, The Crushing Depths. The team had a new case and a new team member, Mason. Action-packed from the start, Rissi and Mason’s helicopter crashes before they even get to the death to be investigated. Rescued and taken aboard the oil-rig, they soon suspect foul play even though they can’t yet prove it.

I loved Rissi as a character in book one and it’s great to get to know her better. Mason is a friend from her childhood and soon the two realise whilst they may be older now, the fondness they hold for each other remains. After ten years apart, they work to reconnect and catch up.

Onshore, Noah has his hands full with a second case as a friend of the team‘s home is broken into and they suspect her ex-boyfriend is trying to intimidate her. Keeping an eye on Brooke and trying to unravel the threads of the oil-rig case has everyone working overtime.

I enjoyed the way Dani weaved all the the elements of the story together. Whilst I knew the obvious culprit wouldn’t be it, I didn’t quite fathom out the full mystery in either case. The twists were surprising but plausible and interesting.

Each of the characters is so well thought through and easy to connect with. I particularly enjoyed the witty repartee amongst the team members which adds some levity to a heavy mystery. There is plenty of suspense as the team works against the clock and the weather to solve the cases before more people are hurt and I read it straight through! I highly recommend it, it’s a five out of five on the enJOYment scale!

Author Dani Pettrey is one of the first suspense romance writers I discovered several years ago, with the first of the Alaskan Courage series release. I have read every book since that first release and have never, ever been disappointed, not even once.

Her latest release, The Crushing Depth, the second in the Coastal Guardian series, is set off North Carolina coast. For the first time, an oil rig was built and stands off the east coast; an environmentalist group fought against it before it was constructed.

Now someone is using an ancient curse known about the area, to sabotage the rig; when a crew member dies, the Coast Guard investigative services are sent in to investigate the accident. When Ricci Dawson and Mason Rogers arrive they soon discover the accident was no accident; they set about discovering who sabotaged the rig leading to the death of a crew member.

Further investigation reveals not only previous attempts at sabotage, but also sabotage that almost cost Ricci and Mason their lives. After being separated for years, the two childhood friends meet up; Ricci and Mason have yet to admit the depth of their feelings, but before they can truly explore where their relationship is going, they must first catch a murderer.

There's a whole lot going on in this novel, and from the first pages, the characters are in the thick of it! Mason and Rissi, who have a sad history together as victims of abuse, are reunited in the Coast Guard Investigative Service. They're sent to an oil rig (which is dogged by a group of eco-terrorists) to investigate a death, and from there the suspects and the bodies multiply.

Some other plotlines are developing along the way. Team leader Noah is investigating crimes against Coast Guard medic Brooke, team members Emmy and Logan are busy with their flirty banter, and Caleb is being friend-zoned but is introduced to a potential love interest. I assume all couples will be featured in future novels. (The main characters of Book 1, Finn and Gabby, remain mostly off-stage in this book.)

There are A LOT of characters to keep straight here: the main team, some of their family members, other Coast Guard members, oil company employees, environmental activists, medical examiners, associates of suspects, and more. By the end, I think I had everybody straight, but it did take a bit of concentrated effort and was helped by the fact that I read the first book in the series.

The pace is quick, the romance is sweet, the characters as well-developed as they can be at this pace, and the mystery intricate and engrossing. Fans of Christian romantic suspense should love this one.

The Crushing Depths is an action packed Christian suspense/mystery featuring a Coast Guard Investigative Service (CGIS team) Although most of the action takes place on an oil rig out on the ocean. There has been too many "accidents" taken place on this rig. Mason Rogers and Rissi Dawson are the team sent out to investigate. Pettrey has created strong, confident and compassionate characters, I loved how they brought their faith into decisions. This is a book to keep you reading and guessing until the last chapter. One you will not soon forget........I was given an e-copy and this is my honest review, loved it.
