Acceptable Risk by Lynette Eason is a fabulous Christian suspense and the second book in the Danger Never Sleeps series. It can be read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed catching up with familiar faces.
Lynette Eason is a master of the suspense drama. She had me glued and guessing from the start. Her characters are all well drawn, realistic and likable. Her leading lady is a mixture of strong but struggling with the insecurities that come with PTSD. She tries to press on regardless of her internal battles.
Families are a curious blend. Sometimes the methods used to keep us safe are questionable. Cracks appear in relationships. The past must be faced and forgiveness given, as much for our sake as for the sake of others.
Pursuing wealth and power is a futile chase. The richest people are those with healthy relationships with others.
Within the novel there are some huge hearts for others.
Sometimes life puts us in situations where all we can say is “Please, Lord, send help.” God loves to answer all prayers but especially those cried out from the depths of our hearts.
I am loving this Danger Never Sleeps series and cannot wait for the subsequent books. My every thought is being consumed by the characters. Grab yourself a copy and settle down for an exciting read today.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
Acceptable Risk by Lynette Eason is an exciting read that is perfect for readers that love military fiction and suspense. Most of the book occurs post-military service but there are definitely some portions in the beginning of the book. This book seemed to have the typical PTSD that people have after leaving the military. But nothing in this book is exactly what it seems. Pick up this book and get ready for an exciting ride. The suspense never ends and you will not be able to put it down. Ms Eason’s characters were the result of the author’s deep study of psychology and they ring with authenticity. I highly recommend this book. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Acceptable Risk is the second book in the Danger Never Sleeps series but I feel can be read as a stand alone. The story was quite gripping in the beginning and I was excited to see where it was going but once it was into the story more, I realized I was just getting more annoyed with Sarah’s character and would skim through her parts just to get to Gavin’s POV sections. I feel that I am probably in the minority as it seem most people really enjoyed the book but I just couldn’t get past how much I disliked Sarah, sorry for the unpopular opinion. I really did enjoy the first book in the series and I hope to like the next one too but this one just did not keep me reading.
I was provided with an electronic ARC through NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This second book in the Danger Never Sleeps series brought flying pages, mystery, suspense, romance and intrigue. Eason's close look at military life reflects her obviously extensive research. She portrays the problems and struggles veterans encounter with both PTSD and VA hospitals so clearly.
The main characters, Sarah and Gavin, were extremely well written. As a military journalist, Sarah had a deep need to pursue the truth in all matters especially when they concern her family. As an ex-military man, Gavin was filled with the need to protect those he cared about. Their witty banter added a delightful touch to their growing relationship. Yet both had relationships in their lives that they needed to repair, and it was enjoyable to see how they helped one another to change perspectives particularly about past choices.
I look forward to the next book in this series as Eason's suspense is always well written.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions are mine alone. I was not compensated for this review.
4 stars out of 5. A solid, well written book by Lynette Eason. I didn't quite feel the same amount of suspense and she has had in some of her other books, but the story was still enjoyable. I loved the chemistry between Sarah and Gavin and I loved that even though, he kept things from her, she did not hold it over his head. I found Sarahs dad a bit arrogant and annoying. I am glad that she continued to find out what happened with her brother and the others. However, I did find the subject matter and base of the story a little disturbing and hard to connect with. Mental health is a very difficult topic especially during this time.
**Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me an ARC. All opinions are my own. I was not required to write a positive review. No spoilers below. **
Acceptable Risk by Lynette Eason is an interesting book, but there are a couple reasons why this review is four stars, and not five. Also, as a note, I have really enjoyed Lynette Eason books before, so this isn’t a first. So, here is why it’s not quite five stars:
The antagonist of the story: I suspected from the very beginning who the mysterious antagonist was, so there was no surprise when the big reveal came. Also, as far as the other twists, I suspected pretty much everything that happened several chapters before it actually happened.
The intimidation of the antagonist: once the antagonist was revealed, there wasn’t much intimidation. I wasn’t really scared of the villain, and I wasn’t hurt when the big reveal came, because I never really liked that character anyway. Or, in other words, I felt nothing when it came to the antagonist. I didn’t like him/her, but I didn’t not like him/her, either. I felt nothing towards that person.
The characters: I must say, I liked the characters for the most part, but sometimes Sarah annoyed me with her childishness and stubbornness.
And last, the realistic part: unfortunately, with several suspense authors, the events that happen in the book aren’t super realistic. Several situations and scenarios are very, very unlikely to actually happen, and the way that the trained army-invested characters react and their decisions aren’t smart, or realistic either. Plus, like I mentioned above, I wasn’t surprised at any twists.
Otherwise, this book was interesting with bits of humor scattered about (yay!) and some action scenes mixed in.
Award-winning author Lynette Eason returns with another installment in her latest series, continuing the storyline started in the first book, Collateral Damage.
In Acceptable Risk, military journalist Sarah Denning is taken hostage when her convoy is attacked. Sarah’s father, a high-ranking commander, calls on former Army Ranger Gavin Black to rescue her. Then her father pulls some strings to have her discharged and sent back to the States under a false psychiatric evaluation. Angry with his interference, she plans to fight it.
But first, she enlists Gavin’s help to find out the truth behind her brother’s apparent suicide. Their investigation leads to a conspiracy about a new drug and its side effects -- and some people who would rather not have the truth revealed. Will she live to tell the story of their investigation?
As expected, Eason creates an action-packed story filled with believable characters, faith elements, clean romance, and a story set in the US and military outposts. Violence is present as one would expect in this storyline.
While this book could be read as a standalone, the characters and storylines introduced in Collateral Damage, continue their story in Acceptable Risks. Although Sarah, and her friends Brooke and Heather have different professions, they spent time deployed in Afghanistan. Their shared experiences build strong bonds of friendship even after their tour of duty is over. Like her friends, Sarah is a woman with a strong sense of justice and her investigative skills put her in the line of danger.
Recommended for adult collections and fans of military romantic suspense, especially fans of Ronie Kendig, Susan May Warren, and Dani Pettrey. Watch for book 3, Active Defense, coming in January 2021.

“Thank you, Captain Obvious. I hadn’t noticed.”
A nonstop thrill ride of mystery, suspense and intrigue, I loved the witty repertoire of these characters. Eason weaved together a storyline that is the fear of every veteran… and I speak this truth as a veteran myself. I won’t say much more about it as I don’t want to give away the plot. However, she writes masterfully regarding military life, the Taliban, and the struggles of veterans dealing with the VA hospital when they come home.
“Sometimes you need someone to step in and save you from yourself.”
I love the witty banter and strong female role models. Sarah’s heart for the truth and the way she can bring the facts together as a military journalist made for an inspiring read. I loved Gavin’s heart for her. His protective nature and love for her could be seen right from the beginning. As it took time for Sarah to catch up with those feelings, she learns to let go of the distrust she has for others. Letting go of her past and accepting help from others are part of Sarah’s journey. She not only learns to forgive others who have inflicted pain, but also to forgive herself. I love the heart of this story, but I especially enjoyed the way Eason kept my attention from beginning until end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Susan May Warren, Ronie Kendig, and nonstop romantic suspense. My favorite line was this one showing how much we can do things in our own, but how beautiful it is when we allow others to help.
“He cupped her face and met her gaze. “You’re one of the strongest people I know. You’ve got this. And I’ve got you.’”
Acceptable Risk is the second book from the Danger Never Sleeps series, so I’d recommend starting with Book One, Collateral Damage. However, it could easily be read as a standalone. I loved the first one too, though!
I received an ARC through NetGalley by the publisher. I have given my honest opinion in this review.
This is the type of book I crave and never want to put down. It’s intense, genuine and gritty. Sarah and Gavin, along with her brother Caden, are caught up in something terrible. I believe we met Sarah in Collateral Damage, an investigative journalist working undercover as a teacher. She has her own storyline this time as she fights to solve the reason many soldiers are committing suicide after claiming they were healing from depression. Gavin and Sarah seem to have an inner strength supported by their Christian beliefs, however it’s rarely mentioned and never preached. There’s something powerful about strong characters, especially military heroes, relying on their faith to guide them. Although part of a series this can be read on it’s own as it is not connected to the first. I received my copy through Netgalley.
Acceptable Risk is the second book in Eason's Danger Never Sleeps series, but it works quite well as a stand-alone read. While the story takes place stateside, some of its roots can be traced back to Afghanistan. Army investigative reporter, Sarah Denning, and her friend, former special forces member Gavin Black, work together to find how seemingly unrelated events might be connected. A kidnapping of students and teachers, threats to a Lieutenant General, and unexplained and unexpected suicides are what they have to work with, all while coming under attack themselves. As usual with Eason stories, the action is rapid and the plot compelling. I read the book in one day, not something I often do, but, not to be cliché, I truly couldn't put this book down. I am grateful to have received a copy of this book from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here is my own.
Readers will love the second book in this series which has a fast-paced tempo throughout. Readers risk doing nothing once you start this book, because you will not want to put it down. This book will leave you guessing what and who is behind everything that is occurring. The plot is extremely interesting and one that readers will love. Even though this is the second book in this series, readers can read this book as a stand-alone book. I recommend reading the first book as well. This book focuses on Sarah who is a military journalist who is always out to find the truth no matter what the circumstance. Gavin is a previous acquaintance of Sarah’s and he is able to help Sarah as she searches for the truth about her brother’s suicide. Sarah is tenacious and one of the most determined people who strives to overcome anything that she has had to face. This book is a Christian suspense romance book. I love the way the author is able to seamlessly go from one scene to the next. I highly recommend this book! You will not be disappointed! I cannot wait until the next book in this series is out!
***I was given a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review. This is my honest opinion. Even though I received this copy free, I have purchased her books before.
This novel from Eason has lots of action and a timely plot. Although it is the second in a series it centers on a different character and can be read as a stand alone. (You can read my review of the first in the series, Collateral Damage, here.)
Sarah is a feisty heroine. Her stubborn character was developed well. I liked her presence of mind when held hostage in Afghanistan. And Gavin is a likable hero. Their romance is handled well. The plot was kind of easy to figure out and I knew who the big bad guy was early on. Nonetheless, in this time of Covid and the rush to develop a vaccine, the plot gave me much to think about.
Eason has added several issues to the main plot. One is family relationships. Both Sarah and Gavin have issues with family members, Sarah with her Dad and Gavin with his sister. Eason does a good job of showing how reconciliation can come about.
I was disappointed there was no Christian emphasis in this novel. Gavin says, “Thank God,” twice but that's about it. With the issues of forgiveness and reconciliation I would have liked something said about God's forgiveness and the gift of reconciliation. Readers who do not like mention of Christianity will find nothing offensive in this novel.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Acceptable Risk kept me up late into the night. I raced to finish, and avoided a number of chores until the killers were caught. This second offering in the Danger Never Sleeps Series is every bit as gripping as the first.
The story opened with military journalist Sarah Denning, kidnapped in the Middle East. After her rescue and return to the US, she’s discharged from the Army. Her overbearing father hires former Army Ranger Gavin Black to protect her without letting Sarah know.
Sarah’s heartache only increases when her brother commits suicide. She pauses her plans to save her career and enlists Gavin to help her find out what really happened.
I liked that while the attraction between Gavin and Sarah was pretty quick, it didn’t overpower the chilling storyline that had combat veterans committing suicide unexpectedly. The two work together and a darker side to medicine is brought to light, but will the truth be found before the body count rises any further?
Acceptable Risk is another unpredictable winner from one of Christian Fiction’s finest romantic suspense authors. I can’t wait to see what the third in the series delivers.
Another fantastic installment in the Danger Never Sleeps series! Lynette Eason has delivered her best book yet! She continues to get better at giving readers the story they want and so much more. Acceptable Risk is at the top of my list for best of the year so far.
Sarah Denning joined the army to become a military journalist and uncover the truth where others run from it. While in the Middle East, she is attacked and taken prisoner. A group of special soldiers is sent in to rescue her, including former Army Ranger Gavin Black, who was asked by Sarah’s father, a General in the army, to rescue her. Once Sarah is back home in the States recovering from being taken hostage, she finds out her father helped have her discharged on a false psychiatric evaluation. She will stop at nothing to prove to him and anyone else that she is still fit for duty and ready to return to her unit. Before she can do that, she learns of her brother’s suicide and can’t believe he would do such a thing. Now, Sarah must use all her journalistic abilities to find out the truth of what happened to her brother. In order to do that she is going to need help, so she asks Gavin to assist in her investigation to determine the truth and uncover the biggest story of her career.
Lynette Eason seriously gets better with each new book. Every time I pick up one of her novels, I know I am going to be in for a thrill ride. I had such an easy time connecting with the characters in this story, the way she started with Sarah in danger but doing all she could to protect others captured my attention and kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. My biggest complaint is I didn’t have enough time to just sit and read this cover-to-cover. I absolutely loved the way I was able to immediately connect with Sarah from page one. I felt for her and wanted to see her come through the whole ordeal alive and safe. The relationship she had with each male in her life was so different and portrayed so well. Her father’s treatment of her only spurs her on to prove she is capable of so much more than he realizes. Their relationship hit home for me and was so raw and believable. The way Eason wrote Sarah at the first half of the book was perfect for me. She is recovering from tragedy and having to rely on others around her but refuses to play the victim and puts every ounce of her soul into doing what she can to help those around her.
I feel like each time Lynette Eason releases a new book it is my new favorite, I didn’t know if she would be able to top Vow of Justice but Acceptable Risk might just beat it, if not I’ll have to call it a tie. I recommend this book to anyone that loves a fantastic romantic suspense, with characters they can cheer on and a story that will pull them in and keep them on the edge of their seat. It is the second in the series but could be read as a standalone if so desired.
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.
"Acceptable Risk" is a Christian romantic suspense. Sarah dealt with PTSD, a controlling father, and someone attempting to kidnapped or harm her. She also was determined to track down the truth about what happened to her brother and someone she met in the hospital. The suspense came from repeated, violent attempts against her and Gavin. Her father secretly hired Gavin to protect her, which he'd gladly do, anyway. Sarah and Gavin had dated for a while in the past, and he's still interested in her.
The main characters were inquisitive, caring people who reacted realistically to events. Sarah and Gavin built each other up, helped each other grow and heal, and made a good team. The Christians were motivated by their belief in the worth of human life. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this exciting story.
Taken hostage in the Middle East and fighting for her life and the lives of her students, Sarah is relieved to see an army ranger and his team come to their rescue. She is stunned when she realises it’s her ex-boyfriend Gavin. The action keeps rolling in Lynette Eason’s Acceptable Risk. Gavin’s mission is over but, in reconnecting with Sarah, he realises she needs him as back up. Badly injured, she’s taken to hospital and then discharged from the army on psychiatric grounds. Still reeling, Sarah’s estranged father delivers the news her younger brother has died by suicide.
Back in the States, Sarah starts to put together the pieces of her life and her family together and nothing adds up. The psychiatrist discharged her without consulting her and everyone interacting with her brother believed he was doing better, positive about life. Additionally, a woman she meets in hospital vanishes from the hospital and there are no records she exists.
Gavin is determined to keep Sarah safe and, even back home, she is still coming under attack. Soon, the two feel lost in the mystery surrounding them and confused by the conflicting information. It is a complicated web and I loved exploring it! The ending is clever and satisfying!
Lynette has written a fabulous sequel to Collateral Damage and I can’t wait for the next in this series! Each character is intellectually written, the story is interesting and fast paced and the emotions heartfelt. Christian principles are lived out despite the incredibly difficult circumstances. Forgiveness and purpose are at the centre of this one. I so enjoyed getting to understand Sarah and Gavin better.
If you like a good action suspense, this is one to read! Highly recommended, it’s a five out of five on the enJOYment scale.
A thrilling companion to Collateral Damage. Sara Denning is an Army journalist taken hostage during an attack on a school in Afghanistan, her capture brings her face to face with Gavin Black, a man she had previously dated and subsequently ghosted. Back home and discharged, she learns of her brother's suicide, and is determined to expose the dark web of lies threatening her family.
Sara is a skilled journalist, with natural instincts for following the clues. She has a complicated relationship with her father, who is a high ranking general in the military. She is compassionate, independent, and fiercely tenacious, fighting for what is right.
Gavin doesn't know what went wrong with Sara, but he will do whatever it takes to help her and keep her safe. I like how he is respectful and forthright with Sara, and he's the kind of guy you can't not like. He thinks on his feet, and is a good problem solver.
While the second in a series, it works well as a stand alone too. Great pacing, plot, and character interaction make this book a stand out. Once I started I didn't want to put it down. Suspenseful, with reveals that kept me on the edge of my seat. Well balanced read, filled with faith, suspense, strong heroes, and well built character arcs. Highly recommend this fantastic read, Lynette Eason hasn't let me down yet!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a Christian romance and is the second book in this series. This is a romantic suspense but deals with hard core military issues such as PTSD and suicide. This is a fast paced mystery and a sweet romance
Another thriller by Lynette Eason! Acceptable Risk is an action packed, heart pumping suspense, drama, and emotion that captures you from the opening pages and keeps you reading long into the night.
Sarah Denning has escaped a lot of danger while doing investigative reporting for the Army in Afghanistan, but when she is kidnapped from a school she is guest teaching at along with a fellow teacher and students, she fears for her life. The kidnapping is a catalyst for events leaving Sarah facing numerous dangers. She not only has to worry about staying alive, but also facing her past. Her anger with her father has led her down a dangerous path of rebellion that she is forced to confront before it is too late.
Sarah’s brother, Dustin, commits suicide leaving Sarah and her brother, Caden, feeling as though they missed something. Searching for answers, they race against time to try to help the vets who are committing suicide while suffering from PTSD.
This book tackles the tough issues of PTSD and suicide as well as heart issues of anger, self destruction, and betrayal. Ms. Eason vividly draws you in helping you to sense and feel what the characters are going through. The characters themselves are relatable and quickly endure to you.
Another great book in this series that leaves you longing for the next one!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
Wow what a thrilling ride this was! This is the 2nd book of the ‘Danger Never Sleeps’ series although it could be read as a standalone. This is a story about a discharged military journalist named Sarah and a former Army Ranger nance Gavin. Sarah wants to find out the truth about her brother’s alleged suicide and finds out more than she can bargain. A big part of the story was Sarah’s relationship with her father, the general and important person in the Army. There is family drama, romance, mystery and suspense. The romance was sweet but wasn’t a big part of the story. While I felt for Sarah, she did get on my nerves with her stubbornness. Gavin was a good character. I liked how he cared for Sarah and wanted to protect her. Caden, Sarah’s cop brother, was a good character as well. I’m surprised that I didn’t get who the bad guy was right away. It took me by surprise. The action was intense especially towards the end. The spiritual thread could have been stronger imo; it was lacking a bit. Nonetheless it was a good and clean read.
