I'm trying to tach myself brush lettering and this was an accessible guide for beginners like me. The projects themselves were cute.
Becki Clark gives the best insight for the beginner or the intermediate on modern brush lettering. Readers will get to know about what materials are best, setting your page up for success and a bunch of exercises to get you up to speed on the art of modern brush lettering.
The book even includes some really cool projects (20 in total) and start sharing your newfound skills with the world!
As a fan of, and novice practitioner of brush lettering, I picked up quite a few tips and techniques for my latest hobby. My patrons will love the photos and ideas. I can't wait to add it to our shelves!
"Modern Brush Lettering" is a great book for beginners. The book starts with practice pages of how to do brush strokes and form letters and words, then goes into 20 projects to try. I really enjoyed this book and will be trying some of the projects out and then try to build from them.
Thanks Netgalley and Pen & Sword for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
Anyone else ever bought some brush pens on a whim at a craft store and then proceeded to let them gather dust in your office? I definitely have! And I've never met a pen or color that I didn't need, either! That's why when I saw "Modern Brush Lettering," I jumped at the chance to put those amazing pens to good use!
Becki Clark makes hand lettering fun and easy with simple tips and techniques! I love the freedom Clark gives readers, by reminding them everyone's hand lettering will look different and the biggest key is to have fun with it! Her style is a little more messy and modern, but always looks great.
Clark's craft projects are fun and simple. They make even the smallest occasions more special and make big holidays like Christmas or Easter feel fresh. I can't wait for the next occasion to make a cake topper or decorate a mug as a gift!
Overall, I give this book 5 stars! If you need me, I'll be here practicing my letters!
The perfect step by step for those new the brush lettering world! As someone who has just started journalling this is so brilliant - I will definitely be recommending getting this into store and recommending it to customers!
Modern brush lettering is touted as a beginner guide, but I did not find it especially detailed. The author does provide two style sets, but I didn't find too much difference between the two. I liked both styles but didn't feel that I learned anything new in how to brush letter. The book does offer several projects that incorporate brush lettering but without a good foundation in lettering, these may be more frustrating. If you're looking for craft project inspiration you may find this book more helpful, but learning to brush letter not so much.
Modern Brush Lettering is a newly released guide on the art of brush lettering from Becki Clark, the designer behind the beautiful wedding stationery brand Olive and Bramble.
Starting with the basics, the book covers everything you need to know from tools and equipment, to handy tips and suggestions for words and phrases to use to practice these techniques. Not only does the book help readers to learn the basic skills for brush lettering, but also includes 20 creative projects to test out your new skills. From items that would be great for the home or as gifts, to items for special occasions, there is something for everyone here.
The projects are split into four sections each including five ideas taking inspiration from one of the seasons, which the author explains influence her own work. The tutorials include step-by-step instructions and images alongside tips and tricks, as well as gorgeous colourful photographs showcasing the finished designs.
The adorable handprinted ‘Ceramic Easter Bunnies’ found in the spring section and autumn-inspired ‘Enamel Cups’, both of which combine lettering with floral/botanical designs, were particular favourites for me. I also loved the fact that the author encourages readers to source items such as mirrors and frames from charity shops to upcycle for the projects, rather than purchasing new items to work with.
Modern Brush Lettering is a great introduction to the art of brush lettering and would be perfect for beginners as well as those looking for some fun new lettering project ideas.
I have been fascinated by hand and brush letting so I was excited for this book. I like that Modern Brush Lettering focuses on the basics and the tools that you need. I wish this book would have had a large section about brush lettering itself. I was also hoping for more of a guide and examples that I can do and learn with.
I went into this book thinking it was more of a how-to style book on teaching brush lettering. Although it does go through the basics, most of it is DIY ideas for projects to use your brush lettering on. I think that the basics were quite helpful and easy to understand, but I think there is a lot more to learn than what is in this book. Particularly on font style - everyone has their own writing style including the author and so the lettering in this book is all in her one style. You can of course use whatever kind of letting you'd like for the projects, but I think it's more useful to look online so you can see how many different kinds of calligraphy fonts there are and choose which works best for you and practice it.
The DIYs themselves are very pretty, but nothing too inventive. Some examples are writing on mugs, mirrors, pumpkins, gift tags, and ceramics. They are nice to flip through, but many of the ideas can be widely found online and you could get a better variety of styles online as well.
This book is a beginners guide to Brush Lettering and includes 20 seasonal projects to follow. But what is Brush Lettering I hear you cry?
The author describes it as a drawing style of hand lettering that is formed using a brush applying a mix of stroke thicknesses; it's different to calligraphy as less rules surround it. I've used calligraphy pens before and they feel scratchy against the paper, using the brush pen looks much smoother, a dainty type of pen/brush that allows you to create fancy handwriting for gifts, chalk boards, wedding cards and much more.
The projects are quite sweet, not all of them use a brush pen, some use a paint brush instead, but the style of writing produced is the same. Each project comes with a number of steps to follow accompanied by colour photography and tips on how to make the writing permanent if she has written on a mirror or a clay dish.
The book also provides a list of suggested supplies and where to buy them in the UK.
Overall this is a lovely book to get you started on your journey to brush lettering. I can see myself applying these techniques to our present tags at Christmas or personalising a birthday gift.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
I'm really into journaling and brush lettering so when I saw this book on NetGalley I definitely had to request it. I really loved the arts and crafts aspect of this book with all the projects and ideas given but I would have prefer the section about brush lettering to be more extensive and with more examples and everything since that was the part that drew me to the book.
Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.
Modern Brush Lettering is a tutorial and style guide to a popular and useful style of calligraphy which lends itself to many uses and is especially popular for bullet journaling. Due out in late 2020 from Pen & Sword on their White Owl imprint, it's 120 pages and is available in paperback format.
This is an accessible and encouraging guide. The author has a very upbeat style and I found myself just grabbing some brush markers I had from my attempts at other papercrafts and lettering and jumping in. The introductory chapter covers tools and supplies (very easily acquired and inexpensive), followed by basic strokes and mark making, moving on to alphabets and building up to words and phrases.
Following a short chapter on mindfulness and the philosophy of process, the 20 project tutorials are arranged by season with 5 for each: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The projects range from total beginner to slightly more advanced, all are attractive. The projects themselves are a good starting point for further embellishment and I can definitely see myself using them as further inspiration. Each of the tutorials include an introduction, materials and alternatives in a bullet list sidebar along with tips from the author. The step by step instructions are clear and simple. The instructions are accompanied by lots of photos which illustrate each step. They're composed well and clearly formatted and it's easy to see hand and pen positions as well as drawing layouts. Pretty much every page has one or more photos.
The book also includes a very short FAQ and abbreviated resource list with specific paints, papers, and inks used by the author.
I've been spending a lot more time with my journal (mostly in an effort to organise my book blogging) and I've found a lot of really good tips here.
This would make a great gift (maybe with some paper and brush pens) or selection for the home library. There are a number of nice projects included.
Five stars. Very useful.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Modern Brush Lettering provides examples of several alphabet styles and multi projects that can be completed with the guidance of the book. I would have liked more tips on lettering and alphabet styles but it was a nice simple starter guide.
I love, love, LOVE this book! The photography is so beautiful and the author is incredibly skilled and talented. It covers a range of projects, activities, techniques and ideas to encourage you to engage in modern brush lettering. A fabulously inspiring and stunning book!
This book really helped me get my brush lettering down. I love the fact that there is so much in this book, from materials to joining the letters together. I will continue to use this book over and over again!
A basic introduction to strokes and materials. Some nice projects to do each season - but could cross over some into other seasons.
Very interesting to read. I learned a great deal about the subject. Definitely enough to put into practice. It certainly would be a useful tool to have
Nice and easy brush lettering templates and techniques for beginners and those who need practice with lettering.
This book is aimed at beginners to the art of brush letters. Which is me!
The book starts by discussing the tools to use and then step by steps explains making your mark on the page including how to hold your pen and the basic strokes you will use to form the alphabet. This is so important because brush lettering isn't the same as picking up a ball point pen.
Once you have mastered the brush, the book gives you multiple projects to attempt with your newly developed skills.
