This is honestly one of the best graphic novels I've read!! In fact, I can't believe it took me this long to get to it. Teared up at the end and I'm not even a pet person! Loved it!! The art was beautiful, the characters charming, and the *story* amazing!
'Bear' by Ben Queen with illustrations by Joe Todd-Stanton is a graphic novel about a pretty special guide dog.
Patrick uses a cane to get around until he gets a service dog named Bear. Bear changes things for Patrick and gives him more mobility until Bear has an accident that leaves him doubting himself. He finds some unusual friends that help him find new ways to use his innate talents.
I really liked this story about loss and new ways of looking at things. The art is a really great style and was perfect for the story.
Bear by Ben Queen is a must-have for any family. The story follows a guide dog named bear who helps his owner Patrick. Bear becomes blind and has to adjust to his new reality. This book teaches kids the importance of guide dogs and helps them understand how blindness affects people. I’d buy a copy for myself and for friends.

2021 Maverick List. In this wonderfully done graphic novel we see the world through the eyes of a service dog, Bear, as he tries to help his owner, who is blind, learn to navigate the world. When Bears visions begins to fail he does everything he can to hide it so that he can be there for his owner. Very sweet touching story.
I adored this graphic novel! So cute and sweet and inclusive with the dog going blind like his owner.
Bear is was a well-done book with a realistic depiction of going blind that is easy for children to understand. The book is honest and engaging and it fills an important need in the world of children’s literature.
A picture book laid out like a comic. Bear is the story of a guide dog who one day loses his sight. He goes on a journey to try and deal with it. I liked the fanciful images Bear imagines in his mind's eye once he's blind. I did like how you learned some of how both blind people cope with their blindness and how guide dogs are trained.
Okay, so I know this is going to sound weird, but this book feels like a full length movie. If you consider a typical picture book a tv show, then this graphic novel would be a movie. I know that many parents like to use longer chapter books as bedtime stories for little ones, and I think this novel can fill that place as well. While I wish that it was broken into chapters, to help facilitate places to take breaks, I can see Bear becoming a beloved character of many children. Visually, when Bear loses his sight, the book stays just as appealing (if not more so) than when he could see. The book is like a constellation of setting and Bear and the reader are learning to navigate the environment together.
Bear by Ben Queen was such a cute read. It was a lot more emotional than I was expecting considering it's a children's book. It sheds light on blindness and explains that even people who are blind create entire worlds with their minds. I can't even imagine what it would be like to lose your sight unexpectedly and then along with it lose your sense of self (like what happened to Bear). One of the things that I loved the most about this book is that when bear lost his eyesight he pictured the evrything as being so beautiful. It didn't matter that who or what he faced he always imagined it to be so pure and beautiful. This was very touching. I wish we could all picture and see te world the way bear did. A very cute read!
ARC received from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I am quite intrigued by the concept of this story. I loved the style of the illustrations. This quirky blend of story meets nonfiction was actually refreshing. I think kids are going to love meeting Bear and joining him on this journey. And it is a huge bonus that they will learn something along the way.
Thank you to Netgalley and Boom! Studios for the ARC I received. All opinions in this review are my own.
Bear is an adorable graphic novel by Ben Queen (Disney Pixar's Cars 2 and Cars 3). Bear is a guide dog who would do anything for his owner Patrick. But when Bear suddenly loses his own eyesight he worries he might lose his job/identity as a guide dog. Bear goes on a journey to regain his eyesight and meets new friends along the way.
I loved this graphic novel! Bear is the best boy and I love him. The illustrations are so imaginative that I was swept away into Bear's adventure. I really recommend this book if you are looking for a cute graphic novel that will leave you with a feel-good feeling.
I loved this little graphic novel. It's a fast paced read, but it's full of adventure and whimsy. I loved all the little supporting characters, but also the powerful story behind guide dogs and the companionship found when you have a dog. Definitely recommend it to young readers who love graphic novels!
This was very inventive, and I learned a lot about the visually impaired - especially those that lost their sight later in life and how since they knew what things looked like before they can still visualize those things in the world around them (although perhaps incorrectly or out of context).
Here we are introduced to Bear, a guide dog for a blind man Patrick. Bear suddenly loses his own sight and through a hilarious journey filled with wild animals (some well meaning, some not...) Bear learns to use his other senses to find his way back home.
I especially loved the illustrations, and how they shifted perspective between reality and what Bear was ‘visualizing’. Very creative!
Bear is adorable - you see his unique, explorative personality from the first page of Joe Todd-Stanton’s expressive, whimsical illustrations: so full of sparkle and life. Bear is also a dog! A special dog we follow through this imaginative visual journey as he does his unique job. It’s all routine, until one day . . . everything changes! Who is Bear if he can’t do his one job anymore?! There are so many good lessons secretly squished into this unexpectedly adventure-full story: we’re so much more than what we do, good friends who encourage our unique skills and support us are necessary, and that we’re more resilient than we think. Follow Bear as he goes on a journey drawing on his experiences and memories to find out who he really is, and help guide him to where he’s meant to be! Seeing things differently than everyone else is a benefit in this imaginative, sensory adventure we call life.
Well this was an absolute treat of a book! I may well be biased as I am a BIG fan of Joe Todd-Stanton's work, but this book was an absolute joy from start to finish! A unique perspective on blindness and an excellent adventure along the way. I absolutely LOVED the format and it was immensely readable throughout. Highly highly recommend.
This is probably one of the prettiest books I've read. The panels are delightful to look at and anyone would benefit from reading this story.
Bear is a guide dog for Patrick, when suddenly he loses his sight and loses his purpose. What follows is an epic adventure where he learns more about his purpose in life.
Thanks to the author Ben Queen, BOOM! Studios, and NetGalley for the review copy. All opinions are mine.
This is a really sweet graphic novel about a guide dog and his human. Highly recommend. Appropriate for all ages (with a slight bit of animal-related scares and some scary medical stuff). A lovely way for kids to learn about blindness and what guide dogs do.
• Bear (by Ben queen)
Knowing that it's a children fuction graphic novel I had 0 to no expectation from it, I was just amazed.
When I finished the novel I was so happy and satisfied and really full of positive vibes. The story starts with the dog's point of view named Bear and how he became a support dog being a descendant of police dogs.
Bear and his owner or best friend might I add Patrick have the best bond and pure bond you can see. My heart swelled for them. I can only say that I loved it so much I cant depict it enough through words.
Also side note but important one: Patrick is blind and theres a real good journey they will have together in the book
So I recommend this graphic novel to anyone who wanna dive in some inspiration or feel good or wanna feel good and happy without any proper knowledge of starting or end cause that's what will hit you hard
Also last but not the least kudos to the graphic artist. You did good.

Excuse me while I wipe the tears from my eyes so I can type this review. Wow, this book is a treat and a treasure! It's heartwarming and real. Bear by Ben Queen follows the story of a guide dog, a blind man who adopts him, an epic adventure, and a grand reunion.
This book is about found family, sweet romance, and seeing with more than your eyes. It's illustrated like a comic book almost and so, so beautiful! It's more than creative, I found myself staring and staring at how the story was translated into pictures. It's so genius and inspiring! The story and pictures depict life from the perspective of the blind. It was illuminating for me, someone who is not blind and doesn't know anyone who is blind, and that's the type of teaching and sharing in a book that every family needs in their home libraries.
I read this on my own, not to my 3.5 yr old. It's a little too old for him to follow, but I would absolutely gift this adults and teens. This would be wonderful for home teaching and family read alouds with older kids.
Thank you Boom Studios and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This story was so cute to read, talks about a thing so important, and brings diversity to literature. I enjoy reading this one. The illustrations are so great and beautiful too.
