One by One is a solid closed circle mystery, with a layered and tightly woven plot, including a semi-exciting cat and mouse game towards the end. However, I just did not enjoy it all that much. The characters were unlikable, and I really didn't care which character died one by one, I was actually looking forward to it. The book does not really get exciting until the last third and that is where the reader understands all the time Ms. Ware spent on presenting the perspectives of the two protagonists Erin and Liz. Still, it just was not all that interesting to me. Yet, I was impressed with the technical elements of the mystery that Ms. Ware crafted, I just wish it was a bit more thrilling. I rate it 3.95 stars.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this book. Unfortunately this one didn’t quite do it for me as other thrillers have. I felt very bored with the book and it only got exciting the last 20% or so, which was a huge disappointment. The concept should have felt exciting and cozy but ultimately it didn’t grab my attention so I found myself skimming most of the book waiting for something to happen.

Another amazingly entertaining read from Ruth Ware! I’ve read every single one of her books and this one is definitely in the top 2. I was thoroughly entertained and loved the setting of the French Alps. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Even though I felt like I figured out the murderer pretty early in, the story was still thrilling enough that I needed to keep reading to learn all of the details. Thank you so much to Netgalley and gallery for sending early copies for review. I would HIGHLY recommend this one to suspense and mystery lovers!

Ruth Ware's latest book is complicated, intriguing, and riveting. The title doesn't lie, as eight coworkers find themselves trapped in a winter chalet with a killer targeting them, one-by-one. If you are looking to escape into a world of mystery and danger with complex character, pick up a copy of this book, now!

I enjoyed this book and would suggest that it be a part of a high school classroom library or in our actual library, but I didn't find this to be on that I would recommend for book clubs, etc.

I am a huge fan of Ruth Ware and look forward to reading her books. This one doesn't disappoint.. When the staff of Snoop, a tech start up, takes to the French Alps for a week's retreat, what could go wrong? Deaths, avalanches, loss of electricity, injuries and much more, keep you turning the pages as you try and figure out who is the murderer and how do they get out of their predicament. Friendships and loyalties are tested as they hope for a rescue. Ware has been described as the new Agatha Christie and this book is an example of why that is true. Start reading!

One by One opens on a group of coworkers, the staff of Snoop, a tech startup who retreats to a cozy chalet in the Alps for a retreat. But it isn’t just any retreat. They have a big decision to make. Will the company go public?

We also meet the two chalet keepers, Erin, the host, and Danny the chef. Erin and Danny work together and are best friends, so it’s easy to be isolated together, rolling their eyes at the antics of the Snoop staff. With tension high about whether or not the company should take their stocks public, the tension is high and the cocktail hour feels more like the opening episode of Survivor.

Also added to the mix? Liz, an awkward and decidedly unfashionable and uncool ex employee who somehow has wiggled her way into the inner circle. But more on that later. But despite the dynamics, they are in the Alps, so they all venture out to go skiing the next day.

But, as the title suggests they all start to drop like flies. One by one.

This book is classic Ware. It’s definitely a nod to her earlier books for those who really loved them, it’s definitely one to check out! Special thanks to Netgalley and Gallery Books for an e-galley in exchange for my honest review.

Ruth Ware has proven again that she is a master storyteller in the psychological thriller genre. This thrilling novel is not only diabolically ingenious it is a commentary on how many modern businesses and their seemingly entitled CEOs run them.
Snoop, an immensely popular music streaming start up with a unique gimmick, is having a company retreat for their shareholders and execs at an exclusive remote skiing resort in the French Alps. Also attending the retreat is Liz, ostensibly a mousy former employer who holds two shares in the company. Meetings have been set up to discuss company business. Glamorous Eva and "entitled" Topher, who were formally a couple are the original founders of Snoop. An impromptu meeting is called by Eva where she reveals a substantial financial buyout offer for Snoop. Topher is furious. It will be up to the shareholders to vote on whether or not to accept the buyout.
Erin and Danny, the caretakers of the chalet perceive the growing tensions among the group as they begin to take sides on the buyout. Liz with her two shares could be the deciding vote. Most of the group decides to take a skiing break and some get separated. When they return, Eva is missing from the group. The weather takes a turn for the worst and an avalanche occurs, cutting off communication and electricity, trapping them from the outside world. Then the bodies start piling up. Eva is still missing There is a killer among them. Suspicions and fears grow. Who to trust?
I could not put this book down as the suspense and tensions built up. The story is told through chapters interchanging between Liz’s and Erin’s viewpoints . There are subtle clues about the killer through the novel. As the killer is revealed, Ware takes you on a tumultuous ride leading to nail-biting climax. “One by One" is a must read for Ruth Ware fans and lovers of psychological thrillers.
Readers who are skiing enthusiasts will love this novel. Having little knowledge about the sport, I learned a lot about skiing from Ware’s descriptive text. One suggestion I would like to share is to make a cheat sheet for the characters and their roles. There are 12 characters in the book, and it is a bit daunting to keep up with them in the beginning.

3.5 Colleagues of a company responsible for a social media/music app go on a retreat to the snowy mountains. Most of them are unlikeable characters from the beginning, and we experience this through the
first-person perspectives of two people, the retreat hostess named Erin and an ex-employee called Liz. From the start the relationships between the attendees are muddled. When the group encounters death they are mournful. Feelings intensify when they realize another employee has definitely been murdered. Fast-paced at times with short chapters, this eerie mystery had some familiar storylines, red herrings, and surprises.

This review is based on the audiobook. Thanks to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the e-galley. My reviews and ratings are my own.

I wanted so much to read and love this book. The other readers whose reviews I read seemed to enjoy it. I'm not sure why, but I could not get into this book at all. I have loved most Ruth Ware books, especially The Woman in Cabin 10 and Dark, Dark Wood. But I couldn't care less about any of these characters. I started it at least three times, and to be honest, never finished.

I have been a huge fan of Ruth Ware’s since the very beginning. It seems that every book she writes is a huge hit for me. This was no exception.

One by One is fascinating from beginning to end. I found myself being unable to put it down once I started it. I absolutely loved the app feature throughout the book. I found it to be very unique and one of a kind.

The writing was great and helped me to picture myself in that same atmosphere and I believe that made the book even more thrilling.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and would go as far as saying that this is my favorite Ruth Ware book!

This was my first book by Ruth Ware. It had a good mystery but I figured out who did it early on. There were a lot of characters to keep track of and that made it difficult for me at first. I did enjoy a Sunday afternoon reading this and will look for other books by her.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.

This was another stellar book from Ruth Ware. I have enjoyed all her books, but nothing has come close to The Woman in Cabin 10 until this one. While there was not a major twist like I have come to expect from the genre, there was suspense throughout the entire book and it kept me wanting to read more and more. I was so happy I had this as an ebook so it was easy for me to read where ever I was. I never wanted to put this down and read whenever I had a chance.

I enjoyed the multiple points of view while the storyline was unfolding. I liked getting to see the story from different perspectives.

4.5 stars as it’s a great book with compelling writing reminiscent of Agatha Christie! I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was fantastic. There’s enough intrigue and it’s not as easily guessed as most mysteries in the genre that I’ve read. Great characters, interesting plot...a real page turner! Will go back and read more of Ware’s work. I may have been biased because I love snow but the locale and description of the scenery added to the book’s allure through ambiance.

ONE BY ONE by Ruth Ware is a modern-day version of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. This new mystery is set in the Alps where nine current and former members of a tech start-up (called Snoop), along with their lawyer, have come to ski and conduct some tense business negotiations involving a potential sale for millions of pounds. Told with alternating chapters, readers learn the action from Erin, one of the luxurious resort's employees dealing with her own past trauma, and Liz, a socially awkward guest who used to work for Snoop and who controls the deciding two percent of stock. The first death is an apparent accident on the ski slopes in the midst of a ferocious blizzard. An avalanche isolates their chalet and then more guests die "one by one;" entitlement and privilege are increasingly questioned; paranoia sets in; and the action really kicks into high gear. Receiving starred review from both Booklist and Library Journal ("fans will devour this in a sitting"), Ruth Ware's ONE BY ONE also appeared on the LibraryReads Hall of Fame for September 2020; others in that list included new novels Anxious People by Fredrik Backman, The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult (review forthcoming) and A Deadly Education, another dark fantasy by Naomi Novik.

One by One by Ruth Ware is her own homage to the Agatha Christie classic And Then There Were None. The higher ups at popular app Snoop go on a corporate retreat to a ski chalet in the French Alps. One morning they decide to go skiing and one of the company's founders ends up missing after an avalanche. Then in the following days more employees are murdered. With everyone stranded inside the chalet waiting for rescue, who inside the chalet is the murderer?

The story is told from two viewpoints, Erin, who is the hostess and housekeeper, and Liz, company shareholder and former employee at Snoop in alternating chapters that is quite seamless. As with all of Ware's books, she is fantastic with suspense building and making the reader feel the claustrophobia that the characters who are trapped inside the chalet due to the avalanche. This book is certainly atmospheric. You get to know who the characters are and what drives them, be it greed, entitlement, or something else which gives plenty of opportunity for red herrings. I really enjoyed the book, even if it was a little predictable toward the end. I definitely recommend picking this one up with the colder months coming soon!

My appreciation to Gallery/Scout Press, Ruth Ware, and NetGalley for gifting me a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I would definitely have to agree with all of the comments that compare Ruth Ware with Agatha Christie. One by One is an enjoyable book that I had to keep reading. Although I had figured out who did it after the first few chapters it was still a very enjoyable read.

I feel like Ruth Ware's books are either super good and I don't know what is coming, or super predictable. Unfortunately, this one was very predictable. The way the chapters were designed made the reader know a little too much about certain characters which obviously makes the reader assume one of them is the suspect. I will still read whatever she writes next.

An off site company retreat at a ski resort for " Snoop" (the app everyone is talking about! With Snoop you can "snoop" on the music that celebrities, your friends and even your crush is listening to in real time. Anonymously! ) When a avalanche happens one of the team members goes missing and is presumed to be dead. Shortly after another team member dies, and one by one they begin two die off. What is the killer after? Money? Blackmail? Ruth Ware is known for her gripping thrillers. Follow the 12 original staff as they get killed one by one as you try to solve the mystery with them.
