In "God Himself: A Journey Through His Attributes," Dr. Tony Evans embarks on a theological exploration that is as thought-provoking as it is enlightening. The book delves into the intricate facets of God's character, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of who God truly is.
Evans' approach to theology is both profound and easy to understand. With his explanation of complex divine attributes, like omnipotence and omniscience, readers can feel a deeper intimacy with God, which inspires awe and reverence.
What sets this book apart is Evans' talent for making complex theological concepts relatable. He uses real-world stories and biblical references to embellish his eloquent prose, making this theological journey accessible to a wide audience.
Despite its philosophical nature, the book is still practical. Evans connects each attribute of God to the everyday life of believers, helping readers understand how these divine attributes are present and relevant in their own lives.
"God Himself: A Journey Through His Attributes" is a testament to Evans' skill as a theologian and storyteller. It's an enlightening read that transcends the boundaries of mere intellectual comprehension, inviting readers to an immersive, transformative understanding of God.
If you are seeking a deeper relationship with God or wish to understand His attributes in a comprehensive and relatable manner, this book is for you.
Dr. Tony Evans is an incredibly wise sage. His skills as an author, pastor, and orator cannot be denied. This book is exactly what you would expect from Dr. Evans. It is well researched, well written and full of wisdom. It wasn't exactly the book I was looking for in the moment, and yet it was somehow exactly what I needed. It is deep and reads a bit academic and yet draws you into the mystery of God's incredible nature.
If you love Dr. Evans, you will love this book. If you are curious about God, this book will help you find what you are looking for.
The publisher made a copy of this book available for review via Netgalley. This is my honest opinion.
I received an ARC from Harvest House Publisher, via NetGalley. This review is my personal opinion.
I must say this book truly took me by surprise, although I have heard about God’s attributes. Dr. Tony Evans in this book explains it so clearly and easily that it will help us to understand with more clarity of our amazing God. How He is in control and He is involved with every little detail of our lives. The importance of holiness to have a real and deep relationship with God. I know I am not the only one that has tried to understand God’s ways, and somehow at the end by more confused. I think one of the main problems we have is that we are focus on how to improve, be better, be more fruitful in the process we have loose sight of God and who he Is. I believe this book will open your eyes, as it did for me to many life-changing truths and in the case of many the answer to a prayer. This book could also be great to read in a group

While this book wasn't what I thought it would be, it was what I needed it to be. At times, it read like a textbook, but, I did come away with a much better understanding of God Himself.
Dr. Tony Evans is a great writer, orator, and pastor. I have several of his other books and frequently watch his sermons. With and advanced copy of a digital version of a book, there is a greater risk of errors and this book had a lot of them. So, I am speaking from this version of the book. Although the book was difficult to finish due to the errors, Dr. Evans writes with great imagery that is good to keep a reader invested and to understand the material he is presenting. His love of God pours from the pages and as I continued to read the parts I could decipher, I was gaining the knowledge I was hoping to receive. I do believe the final version will be well worth the read. Thank you to Moody Publishers for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Well-known Christian pastor, speaker, and author, Dr Tony Evans of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship on Dallas, TX released a book, God Himself, on September 1, 2020. His wife, Lois, went to Heaven in December 2019. My deepest condolences to Dr Evans and his loving family. It was a shock that he was publishing this book, but it is great timing. I believe the people in our country have lost their moral compass and could use a quick shake.
God Himself is a wonderful compilation of ideas and scriptures that describe who God is. It certainly reached deep into my heart because I hasn’t thought of God in this manner. God is definitely everywhere and knows everything. Why did it take reading this book to realize it?
The examples given and scriptures to support the idea are very thought-provoking. It’s given me more hope that I can interact with God more than just in my prayers. Rather I can have an ongoing dialogue with Him. This book has undeniably encouraged me to take a bigger step towards growing my relationship with God.
I’m thankful to have been given this complimentary ebook by NetGalley and Moody Publishers in exchange for an honest review. While I expected some preaching in this book, I was not expecting to grow closer to God just through learning more about God and His character. Much of the details I already knew. I do appreciate Dr Evans bringing it to the forefront of my mind. Thank you for taking the time to write God Himself!
Although we do not always want to hear the truth, we get it in this new book by Dr. Evans. He takes several attributes related to God, including love, Grace and Wrath, and breaks them down into relatable stories as well as scriptures from the Holy Bible. This was such an eye opening book, one that will need continual referring to through out your christian walk.
A good book on the subject of God for those of the Christian faith. I found it not as good as my favourite authors on a similar subject but at greater depth both of writing and knowledge than others.
This is a good and indepth examination of the character of God. I found it deeper than some of Tony Evans' other books and appreciated this as it does inspire and feed the soul and leave you wanting to learn more. Some might say it's not for new Christians rather for those wanting a deeper level but I'd actually say newer Christians would actually benefit from the greater depth. It is deeper than surface level without leaving you suffocated. Recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and Moody Publishers for ARC.
God, Himself
A Journey Through His Attributes
by Tony Evans
Back of the Book: “How often do we stop to consider who the God is that we worship?
When we draw near and learn more about this God, we become amazed at who He truly is. Join Tony Evans as he dives into the character of our awesome God—one attribute at a time. In God, Himself, we are invited, with unveiled faces, to behold the glory of the Lord—just as the Apostle Paul instructed the Corinthians to do. Dr. Evans offers insights about the character of God that will challenge you to pursue greater intimacy with Him and help you understand more fully what it means to be made in His image. For after all, as image-bearers knowing who He is defines who we are.
You’ll learn about attributes like God’s wisdom and word, His sufficiency and sovereignty, and His goodness, grace, and glory that make Him the great God that He is. Dr. Evans also includes activities and challenges to help you know how to both process and respond to learning about God. Find your heart encouraged and your worship enriched as you learn about the beautiful nature of our God, the source of all goodness and life.”
Impressions: I received an ARC copy and being so there are often errors. I struggled with the errors in this book and I was unable to finish it. My review is therefore subjective to this limited experience. Take it likewise.
Liked: In the world right now, we need to focus on God. Who he is, is important to understand for anyone wanting to understand Christianity and themselves fully. It is a foundation to your faith. I liked this topic and think that this book is full of biblical arrows pointing the reader in this direction.
Quotes: “…the better you come to know and understand God, the better you will understand yourself. As you come to recognize and see God more clearly for who He truly is, you will also discover who you are as well as understand the world around you.”
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
As would be expected, this is a very good book on the character of God. Tony Evans is always biblical and accurate.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review.
“God, Himself” is the first book I have read by Tony Evans and what a fabulous introduction to this well-known pastor and writer. Unpacking an element of the character of God in each chapter, this book is a deep dive into who God is and how each part of Him affects us as Christians.
I was captivated from the first page by the clear, firm explanations. Dr. Evans creates a relatable and understandable framework for complex constructs within Christianity. He shares everyday examples of life to highlight the points, several of which I found highly amusing and memorable! In the midst of amazing facts and great Scriptural references, Dr. Evans instills a confidence and wonder in all God is which, with the uncertainty of COVID-19 all around, I found calming and reassuring.
”God is present when you feel Him and when you don’t feel Him. He is present when you sense Him and when you don’t sense Him. He constantly leads you to keep His promise that He is going to do with you what He said He would do, even when it looks like He isn’t doing anything with you. Even when things seem to be going wrong, they could be going just right, because when you’re in God’s will, the negatives are part of His positive program.“ - From “God, Himself” by Tony Evans
That isn’t to say the book isn’t also challenging! Dr. Evans doesn’t shy away from the more difficult aspects of God such as judgement and jealousy. He calls out the reader for believing in the Almighty and yet living without regard for Him, the world and His people. However, each part builds to hope and joy. I love how he reminds us of all the goodness God promises In the Bible and the call to live with hope in the future.
”Believers should be enjoying nature more than nonbelievers do because we know who the Maker is. We should be enjoying relationships more than anyone else does. We should be enjoying a good meal more than anyone else does. We should be enjoying the flowers more than anyone else does. We should be enjoying creation more than anyone else does because we know the Creator. So do not believe this lie that as a Christian you cannot enjoy things.” - From “God, Himself” by Tony Evans
In the back cover précis, the book promises to enrich your worship. Until I finished the book I didn’t really get how it could do that! Now, every song I sing or prayer I say connects more deeply as I hear words like grace and glory with new meaning and link them to Scriptures which expand on those parts of God. If you are looking to draw closer to God, to understand Him better so that you can rely more completely on Him, I highly recommend this one! It’s a five out five on the enJOYment scale!
I need to say this before I begin this review: The copy of the book I received for review came as a Kindle “document” rather than a regular ebook, and the formatting was quite jumbled. This made it difficult for me to read the book, so there are parts I did not read. However, I was able to read parts of it. I liked what I read. I thought the author took some difficult concepts to understand and explained them quite well. He also made helpful application of these concepts to our lives, I think this is an informative and compelling book, and I look forward to getting another copy so that I read and highlight passages in the book. This would be a great book for personal study or group study.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
God, Himself is the first book I have read by Tony Evans. This book relies a lot on scripture and spiritual references which helps the reader appreciate all that Dr. Evans is trying to convey in regards to our relationship with God. For anyone who wishes to have an easy read in their Christian journey, this book does not fit the bill. However, it is a great book for those people digging deep into Christian theology.
Tony Evans does a great job of describing the attributes of God with a lot of scriptural references. This book is good for anyone who wants to know more about who God is.
This was the first book I have read by Tony Evans but I had heard good things about several of his older books and after reading this one will definitely have to go back and check them out! I will say this book is not for someone who wants an easy to read Christian life book. It is dense and full of deep theology. However I felt he did a good job making it readable and understandable by using great analogies and metaphors when explaining the attributes of God. The book also contained an immense amount of scripture references so you were never left wondering where in the Bible the author got his information or whether what he was saying could be backed up, which was refreshing in the world of Christian writing where often the Bible is seemingly hardly referenced.
*I received an ARC copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This is my first Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) book review. A word of thanks to NetGalley for having kindly arranged for me to read it in exchange for an honest review.
God Himself is the first book by Dr. Tony Evans that I've read. So I couldn't compare its merits with those he'd published previously. In a way I find it easier to give an opinion without any clouding of thoughts from his previous works.
Dr. Tony Evans is an American Christian pastor, speaker, author, and widely syndicated radio and television broadcaster in the United States. He has written over 100 books, booklets and Bible studies.
The book is billed as a journey through God's attributes. What are they? Starting with the nature of God, Evan takes us step by step to explore God's allness (comprising His omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence), holiness, wrath, sovereignty, love, wisdom, goodness, grace and finally, glory. Such a journey is more needed now than ever in our times when even the notion that there is a God invites derision and mockery.
Anyone approaching this book who thinks this will be light reading will be disappointed. The bulk of the book consists of meaty doctrinal stuff. This in itself is not a bad thing. It just means that one needs a good dose of tenacity and perseverance, combined with a high caffeine fix, to get through this book completely. Even I myself succumbed to the ‘sin’ of skipping over heavy bits here and there in many chapters.
One thing I find in the book's favor is that it is peppered with snippets of practical application throughout the book. But I would have preferred that such practical treatment be cogently presented and expanded in a section after the doctrinal treatment of each attribute, much like how the apostle Paul's epistles are structured.
I commend Dr. Evans for having audaciously taken on a lofty theme as the subject of this book. A daunting undertaking no doubt as, given man's limited wisdom, no one could adequately or fully explore the length, width and depth of each of God’s attributes. Evidently Dr. Evans has striven to marshal all that he knows about the awesome character of God by a careful study of God's Word and from his ministry experience.
