I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
5 year old Emma is at daycare one day, and then she's gone. Who would kidnap her? What happened? The story is quickly paced with punchy writing and the plot is gripping and heartwrenching.
I posted an excerpt on my blog as part of the blog tour.
Thanks to MIRA Books for my eARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
3.5 stars
Good story line but the writing is lacking. I still enjoyed the book, just wish that some things had more detail.
Police procedurals aren't my favorite, I can find them a little drug out, slow and sometimes boring. However, I did quite enjoy this one! A 5 year old girl is missing from a daycare center.. literally my worst nightmare now that I'm a mom! She was dropped off in the morning like normal and then she's suddenly missing at the end of the day. No one can recall who.. if anyone picked her up. Did she wonder off? Was she kidnapped? This was very intriguing and suspenseful. There is a sense of urgency when a child is missing, I was frantically trying to speed to the end of this book.
Hearing your child is missing is every parent's worst nightmare. Not only is the most precious part of your family missing, but you are also cast in a negative light. Better hope any skeletons are well hidden.
The detective team works well together. They are witty and completely relatable. I love the witty banter back and forth throughout the story.
With little else to go on the investigation focuses on Emma's family. A family that is seemingly normal to everyone but themselves. Like most they have skeletons that they had hoped would remain hidden, but with Emma's life on the line they have little choice.
Heart wrenching and suspenseful. A great book for vacation or a quiet weekend.
DNF for now. I'll come to it. I need to read the first one in the series first. Sorry about that. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
I read this title immediately after finishing Ten Days Gone by the author. As a second in the series, I found it even better than the first (and I enjoyed the first!) I did have suspicions early on (and declared them out loud to my husband as I summarized the novel while reading - I made my prediction for bragging rights even though he had no interest whatsoever in playing the let's solve the mystery game with me.) Early suspicions aside, there were plenty of other options to keep me guessing in the whodunnit unravelling and I was right-ish - which was satisfying. Perhaps the mystery on this one was a bit more obvious, but at the same time, not what I expected. The author weaves a pretty thorough investigation with plenty of humour and humanity for the detectives for you to care about them outside the crime their solving. My only complaint with this one was that one of the leads was not resolved and while the outcome of the immediate investigation was sewn up tightly, I also felt like there were some frayed threads or a ripped seam that still needed some attention to bring it all together. Regardless, I can live with it (although I wonder....) and I hope there are additional titles in the series to enjoy.
Thanks to the publisher for the complimentary copy of this title. Opinions are my own.
A child missing from a day care center with no one realizing the truth for 10 hours got the cops rushing to solve the case. Author Beverly Long had a fabulous way of writing where there was space even when the tension kept increasing. I could grasp the emotion behind each word.
Having read so many police procedural, I had qualms about reading another one. But this was so different. There was heightened suspense in the story but not the gritty, raw feeling that would leave me battered. Nothing felt forced in the subplots, hence the reading of a difficult topic too sailed smoothly.
A. L. And his partner, Rena, were brilliant as cops. Having not read book 1, I had no problems sinking my teeth into this one. Their working chemistry was in sync; they knew what the other was thinking. And even in moments of different views, it was obvious there was a deep respect for each other. The author was quite brilliant in her craft of etching remarkable characters.
The story was on a slippery slope where I couldn’t even begin to guess how they would solve it. Minuscule breaks were received, but I honestly couldn’t play the Detective. I enjoyed it completely as a backseat rider watching them navigate the twists and turns this case led them on.
I would say this was a must-read book in this genre. And I enjoyed it completely. Well recommended.
I wanted to read this book because I gave the first book in this series a five-star rating. In the first book, I enjoyed the extra detail on each investigator's personal life and their connection to the case. I even liked the side stories more than the main mystery.
In book two the side stories were much less detailed and felt unfinished. I guess part of the technique is to keep adding on to the side stories with each new book. I didn’t feel that was an effective strategy. I think a reader that hadn’t read the first book wouldn’t understand much of the side stories. There wasn’t enough information given on any one side story.
The main mystery was daily good. However, I don’t think it was good enough to entice me to read the next book in the series.
I received this galley from NetGalley.
this was a great mystery novel, I really enjoyed the characters and enjoyed the plot of the book. i look forward to more from the author.
This book was one of the first thrillers I actually threw myself into outside of my romance genre. And I could not be more happy with the outcome of stretching out of the box and out of my comfort zone. This book gives a really detailed inside look of how the life of a detective truly is. The detail in this book is beyond. The detail in this book really gave you The perfect perspective to understand the entire story
I offer a disclaimer that the review here is more about who I am as a reader than the book itself. I think that's important to name as you may find that what I don't mesh with is totally your jam. ANYWAY. No One Saw is a procedural thriller focused on a child care center abduction. AL McKittridge is called in because a child has vanished without a trace - there's literally nothing. He has to figure out what happened which is tricky because everyone appears to have a sound story. Obviously someone is lying, and it's a matter of figuring out who. Given this is a procedural, much of this focuses on process as these type of thrillers do, and again, I'll say this wasn't for me as a reader. That said, this one also had some interesting twists especially at the end. If you like getting insight into the how and why of the twists and turns, this one is likely for you!
Every parent’s worst nightmare comes true in Beverly Long’s latest page-turning thriller featuring A.L. McKittridge, No One Saw.
Baywood police department A.L. McKittridge has just come back from a holiday with his partner, Tess and is looking forward to having some time to himself before he gets back to work the following day. Only, he doesn’t even have the luxury of having a couple of hours respite because he receives a call from his partner Rena Morgan who informs him that a child has gone missing from day care. A.L. races down to the day care center and is filled in by Rena about five year old Emma Whitman who has been missing for the last ten hours. As A.L. and Rena begin asking questions, they keep going down one dead end after another because it seems that nobody has seen anything. There are no witnesses. No traces can be found and there are no leads and clues that could shed even a chink of light as to where the little girl might have gone.
A.L. and Rena are sure that somebody is lying. Emma’s grandmother cannot remember anything untoward happening and all of the child’s teachers swear blind that they do not know anything and that they surely aren’t responsible for the little girl’s disappearance. As the detectives begin asking difficult questions, one thing is clear: the Whitman family have got plenty of skeletons in their closet and many a dark and twisted secret. Are they really completely in the dark about their little girl’s disappearance? Or could there be something sinister going on that A.L. and Rena are simply not privy to?
In a race against time to find the little girl, A.L. and Rena find themselves untangling a complex web of lies, secrets and deceptions, but will Emma be found in time? Or is it already far too late?
A complex, multi-layered and compulsively readable thriller where the pages just turn themselves, Beverly Long’s No One Saw is a chilling tale of dangerous deceptions, dark secrets and twisted loyalties that is a struggle to put down. A.L. McKittridge is a terrific detective and his instinct, intellect and integrity make him a detective readers will enjoy spending time with.
A brilliantly written novel that kept me up way past my bedtime, thriller fans will not want to miss Beverly Long’s latest No One Saw.
What a great book. I really liked this one. I didn't know this was a sequel to the previous book so I'm definitely going to be reading that. I liked the characters and all the twists and turns. It was an emotional rollercoaster ride and it was worth it.
Thank you Netgalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Emma Whitman is five years old and she has disappeared from her daycare center. No one knows if she was kidnapped or wondered off. There are many suspects, but no real clues. Now A.L. and Rena need to figure out what happened to her.
It's been a long time since I have read a crime story that didn't get bogged down with side stories. There is some romance and back story provided, but that didn't overrule the actual story line. I love how this book read like two real cops and their thought process on who to talk to next and why. The book never felt dull.
This book is a sequel, but you can definitely read this one without feeling lost. I have already added to first book of this series to my to read list.
4.5 stars
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my honest review!
Definitely do not miss this one, Terrific suspense and engaging plot, with a surprise ending. I loved and recommend it,
3.5 Stars bumped up to 4.
Second in a series, but definitely can be read as a stand alone as I did. This story follow the worst days of a detective’s life. When a child is missing, every second counts. In this story, the child is missing 10 hours before anyone realizes and reports her missing.
A.L. and Rena have a special relationship as partners and friends. They are each other’s work spouse, and that’s rare and unique. I enjoyed this work relationship and how they played off each other...in this missing child situation and in their private dealings. The characters were all well written, and very realistic. Situations are reasonable and thought out. I look forward to reading more from this author, and in this series. Story moves at a quick pace, just as I imagine a detective mind does on a hot case. If you are a fan of detective stories and who done its, I recommend this book!
Thanks to Ms. Long, MIRA/Harlequin and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.
When five-year-old Emma Whitman goes missing from her daycare provider, it seems that no one saw anything. However, with a grandmother who is adament she dropped Emma off with her teacher and a teacher who is adament that no one saw Emma all day, it is clear that someone is lying. However, will the detectives be able to find out who before it’s too late.
This is the first book I’ve ever read by Beverly Long and I don’t think it will be my last. Although it’s obviously part of a larger Detective A. L. Kittridge series, it reads as a standalone book which was nice.
No One Saw had a great pace and was written in a style that really kept you with A. L. and his partner Rena through the investigation. It wasn’t action packed, but the writing style really flowed well and it kept you entralled every step of the way.
It's the first book I read in this series and won't surely be the last as I liked the characters and the storytelling.
The story is gripping and well written, the characters interesting and the solid mystery kept me guessing.
Can't wait to read the next installment.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Thank you to the publisher for the copy of this one - all opinions are my own.
This is one of those slow burn thrillers that could have run the risk of becoming a little boring, if not for the central plot of a missing 5 year old girl who vanishes, quite literally, without a trace from her daycare.
Overall, I really quite enjoyed this story - I loved the twists, the uncertainty of how the case possibly tied in with a cold case from years prior, the untrustworthy characters, the misdirection - all of it tied together comfortably for an entertaining read.
The only piece that fell a tiny bit flat for me, were the somewhat jarring interludes of the personal lives of A.L. and Rena. I can completely appreciate that this is a newer series, and that it is building up the backstories of these characters, however it very much pulled me out of the intensity of the missing child story when suddenly they were off to speak to their partners/children about some unrelated matter. I'm sure in time with the series building this will feel more natural, but for this particular book, I definitely wanted less personal life and more investigation.
However, in the end this one was satisfying, binge-able and a great addition to my summer TBR.
