This is a poetic, beautiful picture book by the same team that wrote Patience, Miyuki and Time for Bed, Miyuki. Translated into English from the original French, Galliez offers a deceptively simple story about a young Japanese girl who observes her grandfather practicing his self-care routine in the garden. She imitates and enjoys him only to learn that the whole experience has been one of meditation and love.
I cannot say enough good about Ratanavahn's watercolor and colored pencil illustrations. The varying patterns seem inspired by origami paper. The predominantly pink, blue, and yellow palate and the delicate drawings are warm, peaceful, and, at times, whimsical. So many of the pictures charm and enchant, I find it difficult to select a favorite. If this work had originated in America, it would be a strong contender for the Caldecott Medal.
Thanks to NetGalley, I read this galley on Kindle three times, and I could read it ten more and not grow tired. At the conclusion, I was left feeling peaceful, which is what the author and illustrator intended. Highly recommended for children ages 4- 8 or older.
Thank you, Miyuki by Roxane Marie Galliez, illustrated by Seng Soun Ratanavanh features a grandfather - granddaughter bond and reflections on nature, meditation, and the simple things. It's packaged as children's lit, but I feel like this will resonate more with adult readers than with kids. Very pretty Japanese-inspired art, though.
Most impressive in this title are the gorgeous illustrations that accompany the text. With shades of pink and turquoise predominating, the gentle pictures evoke a lovely sense of the relationship between Miyuki and her grandfather as the active Miyuki learns to slow down and meditate with her grandfather. This is a sweet book; it is worth looking at along with all of the Miyuki titles.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
'Thank You, Miyuki' expresses the loving bond between grandparent and child through everyday life experiences. Miyuki is fascinated with her grandfather’s passion for meditation. Throughout the story, Miyuki's grandfather guides her through the process. Featuring daily life experiences, Miyuki’s grandfather teaches the key to mindfulness while staying in the present moment.
The connection between Miyuki and her grandfather is so precious! I feel that it’s very important for children to have stories with close intergenerational bonds at its core. Young children gather valuable information from their elders, for they have much to share in the world.
The illustrations are also very stunning! Every visual ties into the garden surroundings within the book. I would definitely pick up this book to show children the peace and beauty of nature!
Absolutely beautiful children's book following a little girl, Miyuki, outside with her grandfather as she looks at many different things around them.
A sweet description of "meditation" that is not the usual sense of the word, but is more in line of being mindful about what is around.
The pictures alone are worth the price of the book. It is utterly stunning!
I did not know this book was part of a series until after I had read it. All of the books have gorgeous pictures.
I received an electronic ARC of this book as a reviewer for NetGalley. This book would be even better in hard copy.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is a stunningly beautiful book about an active little girl and her grandfather. She follows him all day wanting to be involved with all he is doing and wanting to meditate like him and then learns at the end of the day that what she has done all day has been a form of meditation after all.
The illustrations in this book are beautiful and the story is really sweet.
This is an absolutely gorgeous little story. It depicts a loving bond between and little Asian girl and her grandfather and how he teaches her the simple art of meditation while going on a daily walk together. The illustrations are beautiful, charming and whimsical! They brought me so much joy!! I will be purchasing this book for my library so I will be able to share it with my grandchildren! Well done!!
This would be a great book to add to the project cornerstone collection. A simple story that shows children what it is to meditate. Miyuki and her grandfather spend the day just being in the moment. At first the is hard for Miyuki, but as the day goes on she becomes better able to just be.

Charmingly written by Galliez and illustrated beautifully by Ratanavanh, this children's book - apparently part of a series - has Miyuki finding her grandfather exercising with Tai Chi in the garden. Being an inquisitive child, she immediately peppers him with questions.
He answers them all patiently if not always directly, and when he moves on to meditation, Miyuki is anxious to join him - if only she can figure out what it is. Her grandfather patiently leads her through the garden looking at various things and contemplating them. In doing this he is showing her how he meditates rather than explaining it to her.
Miyuki's grandfather's idea of meditation is evidently not so much of the transcendental kind as it is of the kind promoted by Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius when he wrote: "Of each particular thing, ask: What is it in itself? What is its nature?" In doing this she learns a greater appreciation of the natural world and learns to look around her and discover for herself rather than simply seek pat answers from others.
I found this book delightful and relaxing, and I commend it as a worthy read for young children.
Just beautiful! While Miyuki walks with her grandfather, asking to learn to meditate, I felt as if I was meditating by looking into the gorgeous illustrations. As a former children's yoga instructor, I really appreciate a book like this that I feel conveys the message of try it, stop and breathe, you don't have to do something the way you imagine it must be. Thank you to Princeton Architectural Press and NetGalley for the advance reader copy. I'll definitely be adding this one to my personal collection too!
Thank You, Miyuki is a sweet book about meditiation and it has some really amazing artwork. It might be a bit short, but it was a nice read overall.
“Grandpa, doesn’t it feel good to be here right now?”
Truly wonderful book for little readers! After reading this book I have a temptation of gifting it to all my friends that have children! Wonderful illustrations, pure child’s mind, deep meaning. It’s so important to learn to live here and now! In the present.
Plot of the book: Little Miyuki is asking grandad, what’s meditation? He’s then introducing her to a beautiful world that surrounds us, clouds in the sky, flow of the river, beautiful flowers. And the most important, the art to appreciate everything that is surrounding us. 💓
I think it’s very important to stop sometimes and think of everything that is around us. There is so many things that we don’t appreciate on a daily basis and only pay our attention to negatives. Let’s all find our ways of meditation.
A very lovely introduction to the idea of meditation for young readers; but the real gift of this book is the breathtakingly gorgeous illustrations!
This is a sweet little book with beautiful illustrations. At first glance it seems like one of those children's books that adults will appreciate more than children, but the way it progresses and the way it ends lends it to being discussed with the child and asking leading questions to let them understand just what happened in the book. I think it would be a fun read with an inquisitive child.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy.
This is a delightful story about a little girl with lots of energy who wants her grandfather to teach her to meditate. Rather than sitting her down and expecting her to sit still in a more traditional meditation form, he adjusts his teaching to what she is ready for, which is meditation through seeing and experiencing things that are right in front of them, such as the clouds and the river and drinking tea. This book about a relationship between a girl and her loving grandfather with its lovely illustrations will surely be a book children can find delight in and return to.
Lush illustrations that blend an Art Deco vibe with a deep appreciation for Japanese textiles accompany this gentle story of a little girl unwittingly being taught what meditation is by her grandfather, who models techniques over the course of a day. Lovely.
Thanks to Princeton Architectural Press and NetGalley for a free copy of this book in return for my honest review. This is a book about meditation and inner peace. Miyuki wants to learn to meditate as her grandfather does and so throughout the day she follows him while he walks through the garden, sits by the stream and other daily routines. By the end of the day she has learned a fine lesson on meditation and appreciation of life and nature. A very good book for us to read with our children who are so caught up in rushing everywhere and not appreciating, concentrating and understanding life and the things around us. In this electronic age meditation is a lost art and this wonderful book helps all of us learn to meditate, appreciate and understand the world around us. Peace!
Three stars for this – it's a book that feels more like a vignette for the adult than a story a youngster will engage in for long. Miyuki is a boundless ball of energy, and constantly interrupting her grandfather's tai chi and laidback attitude to life. (Or, conversely, Miyuki is an active girl frustrated by the old man's idleness and unwillingness to answer a single simple question.) In sharing his inactive ways with her for the day we see the pleasure in mindfulness and meditation, even if it never actually convinced me either way. It certainly looks attractive – a delicate touch with lots of Asiatic patterning and nature. But I can't see it as containing that successful a lesson, nor as being a book turned to often.
Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
This is a story which teaches us about real meditation.
Meditation is not just about closing eyes and focusing on our thoughts but admiring things with open eyes
Thank You, Miyuki is a short but delightful story about meditation, inner peace, and appreciating the natural beauty all around us. The artwork is just absolutely beautiful and the actual story itself is constructed in a slightly different and unique structure, but lovely, nonetheless. A short but adorable book that is just a pleasure to read!
