Certainly inventive, imaginative, original and full of attitude. However, this book simply wasn't for me. The tone, voice and narrative did not appeal to me personally, unfortunately. But I'm sure it would be a hit for fans of Beat writers/classic cult American lit.
American Blasphemer is such a disjointed story with no timeline that takes a while to come to terms with this writing style. Having said that Jon's drive to understand good and evil to be able to live this way of perfection was interesting from an outsider's point of view. It made me realize that most religions focus on good versus evil and the pressure must be psychologically damaging. Basically I was curious as to the difference between humanist and Christian ethics which I and many free-thinking people adhere too. and didn't need the lesson at the end of the book. Jon could well go by the dictum, "I try to do good in the world, not out fear of hell or reward of heaven, because it feels better not be an armpit".

American Blasphemer is the story of a lovesick writer named John who moves to NYC to escape his dysfunctional family after getting dumped by his girlfriend.
This story of violence, drugs and seedy characters is definitely not for everyone, but if you enjoy Bret Easton Ellis you should give this a try.
Such a good read. Based on the story of John who escapes to NYC to get away from his mental family ( 2 brothers who drink and take drugs and his religious parents and after he breaks up from his girlfriend.
He introduces us to brilliant scenarios in each chapter to having a knife fight with a sex addict, Christmas spent with his family, visiting Graceland and Elvis’s grave at midnight , a cathedral on fire and burning to the ground. Ending up with a confrontation between himself and a witch and a warlock, you won’t know quite what to expect.
Great underground fiction, well written and easy to read.
