This book was adorable! Two of my nephews play hockey and I was excited to read this to them. I'm happy to say they loved it, and it was a fun one to read as an adult too. The illustrations were also great and kept everyone engaged. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the eARC.
A fun book for kids and families who love and enjoy ice hockey. The illustrations were good and I enjoyed sharing the story with my children.
HOCKEY IN THE WILD is an adorable picture book about 3 animal friends who can't wait to play hockey. Once the beaver finds out there's ice on the lake and he can't go swimming, they try to play hockey. But the ice isn't thick enough. So they wait. And wait.
The illustrations are so much fun! They reminded me a little but of paper cutouts and my daughter enjoyed pointing out the different foods the animals binged on while they waited for the ice to be thick enough.
We are definitely going to check out more books from the Life in the Wild series!
Nicholas Oldland creates some of my favorite illustrations in children’s literature. This short book will take people through a fun story of friendship and athleticism.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This had some funny characters and a unique story. It wasn't overwhelmingly great, but it was entertaining enough. The pictures are bright and colorful and kids love stories where animals talk and act like humans.
This was a cute little book about animals playing hockey in the wild. This is a great book about patience and having to wait to do something that you really want to do.
The blurb caught my attention but after that I lost my interest and didn't read this book. Maybe next time.
Unfortunately, due to technical issues with my computer and Adobe Reader, I lost access to this title and was unable to redownload it because it had archived.
I am planning on buying a copy of this book for my niece next year for the holiday season, as she loves animals, and her dad is a big hockey fan.
I was looking forward to reading this book because I am also a fan of hockey, and it looks like this book would be a lot of fun to read out loud to kids.
I sincerely apologize for not being able to provide a proper review.
As a Canadian, who lives and breathes hockey in the winter, I couldn't wait to read this book. Well, it was cute. Three animals who can't wait to play hockey jump on the ice when it freezes. The problem is that it is not thick enough and they all break through. This was the one spot that really bothered me. What I did like was what they did next and how to make sure it was thick enough before they tried again. While they were waiting for the ice to freeze enough, it was like the rest of us living in the pandemic. They baked, ate, sat around, slept and of course put on weight and got out of shape. I thought that part was quite funny. This is a story about having fun in the winter, specifically playing hockey on the pond. The illustrations were cute. They were very cartoon-like which fit the story perfectly. Overall, besides skating on thin ice and falling through, this was a cute story. My oldest grandchild tried to read this one to us as there was not a lot of text, but there were several vocabulary words he did not know (i.e. particularly, determined, discovered, competitive, karaoke). This was a cute, fun story that we would definitely read again.
A great way to share the season of winter and some of the animals and factors of it's annual occurance. Each of the animals is anxious especially for hockey to start on the local pond.
Hockey in the Wild has all the elements of a great picture book to get kids interested -- sports, animals, adventure, silliness, and even cake and ice cream! As a hockey player myself, I couldn't not pick up this book. It's so cute!
It starts out with a beaver getting excited because the lake has finally frozen over, but when he and his friends lace up, they soon discover that the ice isn't quite thick enough yet. So they go home and lounge around and eat a lot of cake and pizza until the lake finally seems solid enough. Before jumping on again, they diligently measure the ice thickness, throw rocks at the surface to make sure it doesn't break, and of course, send the moose out first just to be sure! Then they relish in the game for hours, long after the sun goes down.
The language is at a great K-2 level, with a vocabulary that should both make kids feel confident and occasionally stretch them. Great context clues from the illustrations. A great message about safety and patience with outdoor ice -- I fell through myself as a kid and it's no joke!
As a female hockey player though, I just have to ask why all of these animals have to be boys?? Girls play hockey too, and throwaway lines intended to be funny like how they "ate kale for breakfast, lunch, and dinner" and that the beaver, bear, and moose couldn't even go out and play hockey until they were in better shape can give young girls the wrong message. I have worked with a surprising number of five and six year olds (of all genders) who won't accept snacks at tutoring (even if they are apples or carrots) because of an upcoming soccer game or something similar, who are afraid to join basketball teams or even race their friends at recess because they aren't already good at it. We really have to be mindful of the messages we send to young kids. Hockey is for everyone.

Thank you to Net Galley and Nicholas Oldland for the opportunity to read “Hockey in the Wild”.
Being a girl who was raised in northern Minnesota, surrounded by many family and friends who played hockey and lakes galore, I was drawn to this book!
What a fun book for kids! The beaver is hilarious! Personally, I am partial to the moose.
I anticipate this book will be well-loved by children and parents alike. The story is so fun and the illustrations are loaded with detail that kids will be drawn to.
Five stars from me. I loved it!
Such a cute and fun story for kids!
The illustrations are silly and bold. I love that there are other books in this wild world as well. Will definitely be picking them up for my kiddos.
I generally enjoy hockey books as a fan myself, but this one felt flat to me and the illustrations were not to my liking.
I had a great time reading this book. Hockey season is almost here, and these friends can’t wait to play a game together. After a few failed attempts, they try to wait until the ice on the lake is thick enough. When the time is right, they all have a wonderful time together. Fans of the previous books in this series won’t want to miss this one.

This book has the elements I look for while reading to kids in grades k-2. The characters are remarkable, there is a lot to describe w/ the setting (lake, houses etc) , the problem, and how the characters attempted to solve their problem. There is also vocabulary and concepts that are important for kids to understand and use.
I read this book with my daughter before bedtime and she really enjoyed it.
I thought that it was well written and I loved the images used to bring the story to life.
I thought it was fun and loved the ending too.
It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!
Super cute book for hockey fans. Not much story, but easy to follow for young children. 3.5 stars.
I received a digital review copy from the publisher through netgalley. Expected publication date is September 1, 2020.
This is a cute book with endearing illustrations of common Canadian wildlife desperately wanting to play the Canadian pastime of winter - pond hockey. But if they aren’t careful and patient the fun can turn dangerous quickly. Rolick along with these forest animals and enjoy the thrill of the game right and learning the importance of safety and patience.
This was the cutest book I have read this summer! I will be purchasing this book for my classroom this year. This is the perfect book for hockey fans. The characters want to play ice hockey., but the ice is not frozen enough. They eat a lot of food and sleep a lot and are not fit to play when it is time for them to finally play. Such a cute story!
