I would give a review but it did not show up on my kindle device to be reviewed I am sure it was a delightful book but unfortunately it is not there to review.
HUG? is a picture book about following your instincts when granting hugs. In this story, a little girl gives a comforting hug to a cat. When others creatures see the cozy squeeze, they want one, too. At first, the hugs come easy, but soon the girl realizes that giving hugs could be putting her in danger - of a stinky skunk, a sharp porcupine, a fire-breathing dragon, and more. This colorful, humorous story provides a light, approachable introduction to the important conversation of physical consent.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is cute. As I'm not a hugger, it's nice to see someone asking if they need a hug rather than just giving one out. The pictures are cute and bright and the story is nice.
I thought this book was hilarious but also spot on for my life. I HATE hugs, but I give them out on occasion and it always seems like if you give one, you have to give more. This is a great little book about setting boundaries and letting people know your limits.
I love how this book is about consent, without stating that it is. Great read aloud book for littles!
Due to some technical difficulties with my laptop and Adobe Digital Editions, I was unable to read this book before it was archived. However, this book does look fantastic, and I am likely to flip through it and possibly purchase it for my niece next time it is safe to attend at a book store. Based on the description of this book, it looks like an important book to introduce children to boundaries. I sincerely apologize for not providing a review.
An unexpected and important book about respecting personal boundaries, with beautiful, expressive illustrations.
Everyone loves hugs, right? Well, sometimes. In this warm, colorful book, one child finds that it's okay to say no to hugs, and it's okay to ask for a hug when needed. Coming from a childhood saturated with non-consensual affection, I found this book particularly refreshing. Nothing is explicit about consent, but I love how the basic concept of "stop" makes so much sense here. The pictures are delightful and touches of humor make this an easy bedtime or classroom story. The words are easy enough for even beginning readers. I'll definitely be recommending this book for my students and friends.
This book is so cute. The illustrations are so sweet! I read this with my two year old daughter, and she loved the illustrations too. It also sparked some good conversations because you can visually see the little girl going from happy to help to tired and drained. With this book you can discuss what it feels like to give and give, and then how to set limits so that you don’t get mad and stressed like the girl in the book. This book would be great to use in a classroom with little kids. To role play what the girl could have said instead of a tentative yes.
I would definitely buy this for my daughter!
A fun read-aloud for little ones (and their readers) who enjoy a good squeeze. Fun illustrations and perfect pacing.
This is a cute, well-illustrated picture book about a little girl’s cat who doesn’t feel well so she asks if the cat would like a hug. The cat says yes which unknowingly brings a long line of animals who sees the hug and would like one as well.
The story has repetitive words on most of the pages, making it easy for my 5 year old daughter to read the book to me. The pictures held her attention and she loved seeing so many different animals (domestic & wild) wanting hugs. I like how the animals waited in line for their turn, asked for hugs & waited for the little girl’s response. All of this provided some good reminders and teaching moments for my daughter.
Thank you Netgalley and Kids Can Press for the opportunity to read a copy.
A funny and sweet book about hugs. A little girl gives her cat a hug after he coughs up a furball. Next thing you know, a number of animals want in on the hugs too. From porcupines to dogs to bears skunks and skunks. Find out what happens when everyone loves your hugs.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! What a cute book!
Unfortunately no one can hug right now, so this book is a perfect read to help us remember what hugs feel like!! I will have my toddler read this and I will recommend it to other children who need a pick-me up! Thank you again, NetGalley!
LOVED the illustrations in this clever book. At first glance it's a simple story of the power of hugs, but it's also a story about boundaries and having the power to say no. I think that is where the book shines. This could kick off some fascinating conversations with kids - in group as well as one-on-one settings.
Hugs are the best! They really make everything better...or do they. In her exciting author debut HUG! artist Charlene Chua explores how hugs can sometimes make you feel better and sometimes not.
When you are feeling upset a hug can cheer you up but what happens if all of a sudden you are the one giving all of the hugs and not getting any in return? It can be so exhausting to always be giving and not receiving in return. This concept is so interesting and fantastic to explore in a children’s book, plus makes for some laugh out loud moments. We read this book over and over and it was still funny each time. Charlene Chua creates a whole cast of animals who need hugs, some who are soft and cuddly and some who are not so much. We also loved how on each page you got a little hint of which animal was coming in for a hug next, building anticipation and humour into the story.
We love Charlene’s art and the books she has illustrated are counted amongst some of our favourites. Her use of space and colour is captivating and entertaining! HUG! gets 5 stars from this family and we are confident this book will be beloved in early years classrooms and homes all over the country.
This is a cute, fun little picture book perfect for a preschool read aloud. Kids will love all the animals who ask for a hug. My own five year old cracked up laughing at several points.
The opening scenario of this book is familiar to anyone who reads picture books. The protagonist wants to make her friend feel better and gives it a hug. And we see how a simple kindness helps. But it doesn't stop there. Chua actually explores much deeper, more complex ideas. Because she keeps hugging different characters at their request. We see her becoming less certain, more frazzled as she goes. Constantly giving of herself without a break is overwhelming. The illustrations are quite charming as well.
I am glad that these books are written for kids because I didn't think there was much to this one, but my granddaughter loved it. The idea Sometimes a hug is just what you need. And sometimes.... It's just not! The young girl in the story gave her cat a hug after he spit up a hairball, then her dog wanted a hug, some ducks and so on. My granddaughter laughed when the skunk and porcupine got hugs and told me what happened. We went through this book several times, with her laughing each time, even though she knew what was going to happen. The illustrations are hilarious. We loved them and she kept pointing things out to me on each page. After we finished, I talked to her about when not to give hugs. Of course she said not to skunks or dragons, but we also talked about strangers and people she didn't know. Another winner for us.
This book is so cute. I love the illustrations, and the subtle but clear message that it's okay to say no, even if you had given permission before. Will definitely be purchasing for my library!
This is a cute story about hugs! A little girl hugs a cat who is not feeling well but then all the animals want hugs and it becomes a bit too much for her. It circles back around to the beginning and the cat gives her a hug to make her feel better! So lovely!
