Review:
Snow Song is a beautiful and enchanting poem of a girl who enjoys the wonderful world of snow. The art is soft and warm and makes us feel homely. The poetry is cute, but it feels that the word "snow" has been overused throughout the poem, and thus is rhyming. The poem can be considered a song for children with a good soft music.
Overall, I liked that artwork, but the poem didn't enthrall me.
I intentionally chose to read this one today, because it was so unbearably hot outside and in, and I am wishing for the cool days of winter already. It’s going to be a long summer. Anyway, this book is beautiful. I love everything about it, the rich descriptive language, the cute artwork, and the wonderfully easy pace of the snow day throughout the city. There’s plenty of literary devices throughout the pages of this icily poetic tale, and I am here for it! The earlier kids learn about these things, the more they can appreciate the beauty of language and strining words together in a pleasing manner.
It’s a simple story of the rediscovery of familiar places that become less familiar, and sometimes lots more fun, when covered in snow. It’s not out until October, appropriately, but it brought a smile to my face tonight and has me wishing for the crisp air of fall and hoping we get at least one good snow next winter!
Keep an eye out for this one in the fall. The flow of the language and the short, poetic lines make it a perfect choice for a bedtime story all winter long.
I would recommend Snow Song for children living in a country without snow or English second language learners. The repetitive use of the word snow was frustrating at times but could be used as a tool for children who aren't familiar with the word to pick up some new winter-related vocabulary.
I should also mention, the illustrations in this book were absolutely beautiful! The colors were eyecatching and a pleasure to look at.
Illustrations Lacked
This book follows a day when snow falls on a wintry day in a small town, and a little girl goes about exploring her snowy world. It is told almost like a prose poem, parts of which I thought were evocative or fun, but others detracted from the tale. What, perhaps, I liked least about this book were the illustrations. As soon as I turned to the first page of the story proper, I was almost disturbed by the cartoonish quality of the drawings. It reminds me of some newspaper cartoon that I saw eons ago, but I can't remember the name of. They're cartoonish because they overly exaggerated reality, like buildings that are lopsided, and the simplicity of the details, like what the children's faces and objects in the distance look like. I would have liked this book if the illustrations went better with the words. Cartoons cannot adequately express the sense of wonder that a book like this should have had.
Cute book! The words were a little redundant but overall we liked the illustrations and it held my 3 year olds attention. My 7 year old was a little disinterested so I’d say geared more to a younger crowd.
Five stars. Well done! A snowy, magical feast for the eyes. The apt, descriptive prose is accompanied by equally deft, beautiful illustrations in a dreamy, pastel pallette. A little girl explores the world outside on a snowy day. Highly recommended for Pre-Kindergarten through second graders. Simply delightful!
This book is like reading a poem rather then a book. The pictures are the best part of the book. I don’t know if any child would read this through. It keeps on repeating snow and doesn’t flow as well as I think it should if it’s saying there is a story.
'Snow Song' is a picture book about a young girl who is elated to explore and revel under the snow. The rhythmic verses are sweet and make the reading experience more pleasurable. It is very easy to follow and I feel like the picture book can be read by a kid without the help or assistance of an adult. The illustrations were lovely and the fact that I loved the most was that - every single character in the book seemed so happy. It basically gives a positive vibe and it is sure to light up the face of the kid who flips through the pages. But I felt like it could've been a tad bit lengthier, for I was left wanting for more.
Snow Song is a beautiful, little children's book that shows us a winter wonderland full of snow!
The word snow is used over and over and over... I wasn't sure if this book was purposely trying to use the word snow a lot or was trying to rhyme. Maybe it is actually a song? Personally, it was driving me insane seeing the word snow over and over, to the point it didn't even look like a word anymore. I don't think kids will notice this, only the parents.
This book would be a nice winter bedtime story. It doesn't feature any educational themes, but it's a sweet, simple narrative with pretty pictures.
The art style is soft, sweet and inviting. It's relatively simple, but makes me story feel homey.
Overall, this book is quite cute!
Two out of five stars for the overuse of the word snow. Otherwise, it would have been a solid 3.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
This is a cute book that follows children as they go out and play while it snows. The writing is very poetic with a lot of alliteration and descriptive words. It is great for building vocabulary. The illustrations are simple but bring forth a very cozy feeling.
There are a few diverse characters sprinkled throughout the pages.
I think this would be a nice addition to our winter Storytime collection.
Snow Song is a beautiful book of poetry. This book is perfect for use in a poetry unit at school to encourage students to make their words sound like a song. The pictures are also captivating.
I like the simplicity of the text. For me picture books are also about the pictures. I remind my students to take a look at the illustrations, because sometimes you find something unexpected. I also like the inclusive picture on the cover.
A magical book that flows and swirls like a flurry of winter snow. The rhythm is hypnotic and soothing as the book progresses. A fabulous book to share with children.
A simple lovely tale of adoration of snow, a light happy read for a young child:
"We waddle through
The creamy snow...
Dreaming
Dreaming
Dreaming
Snow."
Recommended for the youngest of children, a good time to talk about all the interesting qualities of snow, a thing many children will never see.
For the youngest, 4 stars for the joy. Any older child would not find so much interest and would rate it lower. Nice art.
A gorgeous poetic picture book about the value of snow and spending time with friends and having fun amongst children. Very cute.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title.
The illustrations are fun but the text is so simple and free form that I didn't think to read them most of the time. Definitely one for the baby/toddler with a short attention span.
I thought that the images in this book were superb!
I really liked the idea for this one but the story wasn’t great for me and it did let it down.
I read it with my daughter, she did listen and join in with some of the words but when I asked her if she wanted me to read it to her again, she said no and picked up another book to read. It might be that it was not one for her but she does normally want to listen to new books more than once, the story just didn’t grab her, or me if I am honest.
It was a great idea and the images are beautiful but the story itself lets it down. 2 stars.
The best part of the book was the illustrations, they were beautiful. The writing did nothing for me. I understand that it was free verse writing but the use of the word snow so many times in a children's book was rather boring. I think for very young children it would be great.
I love snow, so I do think this book is awesome. I love the poetic flow of the words. My one critique is that the book cover mentions the little girl being new in town and making friends while playing in the snow. However, the fact that she's new and these are friends she is just meeting isn't easily portrayed in the story. I don't think it takes away from the story, but I'm not sure why it's mentioned in cover but not in the story.
A simple book for all the snow lovers out there. With simple rhymes and fun vocabulary words, this is sure to be a favorite. The drawings add to the fun.
