Absolutely loved this book! Fantastic read. Definitely want to read more from this author! Definitely recommend this to anyone.
"Abigail Rath Versus Bloodsucking Fiends" failed to convince me, both as a comedy and a horror novel. Thirteen year old Abi is the daughter of a former b-movie actor, who she also believes to be a vampire killer. Whether child readers today pick up on jokes like "I killed Christopher Lee 30 times" I doubt it, or the references to Lon Chaney and other horror films of yesteryear. Because it was so light I struggled to take it seriously and at various times wanted to scream out BUFFY!!!!!!! It was just too twee and cheesy and I'm not sure who it was aimed at, younger than YA I suspect. There is an amazing range of dark and challenging horror YA and this is definitely aimed at a younger age group. The many film references were fun, but I think even kids will fail to take this seriously and it also seemed old fashioned, as the girl didn't seem to behave like a thirteen year old would. Something about it reminded me of Lauren Child's child detective series "Ruby Redfort" but that was significantly better. This was a miss for me.
Meet 13 year old Abigail Rath. Trust me when I say this young lady is your best bet against the countless forces of evil in this world. However, her parents are not so sure of her abilities, after all, they are professionals. She is trying to step out of their shadow, so when her best friend Vince comes to her with a possible case, Abigail seizes the opportunity. I love the emphasis on the information about monster hunting that can be gained from watching the countless amounts of horror movies available, b-rated or not. I am a huge fan of all horror movies (the good, the bad and the ugly) so this aspect of the book just made it so much fun for me. However, real life does not always mirror the movies when it comes to monster hunting, and in some very unexpected ways for Abby. So join Abigail as she hunts the supernatural while doing awesome things like skating rink limbo and interesting slumber parties.
