A beautifully written tale, with a cast of females that I just adored.
Historical fiction at it's finest about adventure, mystery, tension... and friendship.
Bravo. This was my first Greer Macallister book and won't be my last!

A story about an all women led exploration trip to the Artic to find Lady Jane Franklins' her husband's lost expedition. . When four teams fail to find him she has the brilliant idea to send an all women team of twelve to find him. When some of the team fail to return adventurer team leader Virginia Reeve is put on trial for murder. Told in alternating parts adventure and courtroom trial there is a lot of detail, and the author has done an excellent job of researching it. and I found the book to be interesting and informative.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.

I am a huge fan of Historical Fiction and this book did not disappoint. I loved that this wasn't the typical Historical Fiction novel, I loved the mystery aspect that was added.

The Arctic Fury was a fascinating look at a failed all-female expedition to the Arctic. Though multiple points of view and moving between the past (before and during the expedition) and present (in a courtroom after everything falls apart), this book is entirely engrossing. The characters were so interesting and real, and the idea of an all-female expedition during this time was intriguing. I found myself pulled into the story and not able to put it down. It was more than I thought going in, and exactly what I didn't know I wanted out of this book. I will definitely be looking for more from Greer Macallister.

Fantastic and unique story of females trekking to the Arctic. I was riveted by the characters and heavily invested in their fates while also holding my breath to see who would make it and what would have to be sacrificed or negotiated in the process. A fine read!

Oh I was sucked right in to the story of this novel. An expedition lead by and containing only women is secretly hired to find out what happened to the missing Franklin expedition. There are personal conflicts, intrigue, and death. We learn the story through multiple perspectives and multiple timelines. It was engrossing and fantastically well written.

I really struggled with this novel. I could not connect with the characters or the expedition. Thus, I was not emotionally invested in this story and felt indifferent. Still, I recommend this for fans of Freya.

"The Arctic Fury" by Greer Macallister
Travel to: The Arctic
⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I liked this book a great deal better than I expected to, but still didn’t love it. It’s an interesting premise and I can appreciate the idea of a bunch of bad ass ladies going on an arctic expedition in the 1800s.

Sadly, I just didn’t think that the characters actually ended up being that impressive. I wanted more grit, more survival, and more hanging onto the edge of your seat… It felt like we saw more of the courtroom than the arctic and that just didn’t do it for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I finished the book quite quickly once I started reading, but it ultimately was just an ok read for me.

This book was amazing! The reader can feel the true grit of the characters as they face the challenge of a lifetime and must face the consequences of their choices.

Interesting and unique story. I enjoyed the elements of the book that focused on the expedition. But I wasn’t expecting the amount of detail there was about the trial, those moments took me out of the story at times.

Not my favorite book, the characters fell short of what I had expected they would be and the adventure was not as thrilling as I thought it would be.

This was a fascinating book. It’s not my usual read, but I was hooked immediately. The idea of an all female expedition is so interesting, especially since the leader was tried for murder a year later no one really knows what happened out there in the frozen wastes. They were hired by a prominent woman to find her husband, who went on an expedition of his own.

This story was full of drama and suspense. I especially liked reading about the preparations they made to go out on the ice. This is great historical fiction, 4 stars.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

3 stars.

Half court drama, half historical arctic expedition, The Arctic Fury is about a fictional female led expedition searching for two real missing ships, The Terror and The Erebus. We follow Virginia Reeves as she leads a group of women into the arctic and is ultimately put on trial for one of their murders.

I will say that I was more invested in the court drama than the actual adventure part, but it was nice to read about women in this position. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that this novel has queer and trans representation. And done respectfully given the time era.

If you like historical drama with adventure and court drama I recommend.

3.8 - disappointing in that it wasn't truer to history, but an interesting tale; the lawyer's incompetence was infuriating

I was disappointed with this book. I was anticipating an exciting arctic expedition. Instead there was more attention on the trial and the courtroom. I also felt that the ending was rushed so that I closed the book and thought, “Oh well. That’s all?!”

In late 2020, in the same week but several states apart, both my sister and I ended up on different zoom book events in which Greer Macallister appeared previewing her forthcoming book THE ARCTIC FURY (s/o @carrie.callaghan for the Historical Fiction Happy Hour series, my absolute favorite thing to happen on Zoom last year.)

I don’t read a ton of historical fiction, but an all-female team sent to the far north reaches of the globe to discover what became of the Franklin expedition? My sister and I both smashed the pre-order button on that.

Was VERY excited to receive this from @alikelystorybookstore in December, but it took me until this week to make it past chapter 2, at which point I swallowed it whole, reveling in descriptions of a cold so fierce it steals the breath from your lungs in between sweaty walks and testing the limits of my AC. The story is told in a series of flashbacks from a present day murder trial (think #MiracleCreek) to the moments leading up to, and on, an Arctic expedition made up of 13 women. My opinions on this one haven’t solidified quite, so I’m psyched to discuss it with fam book club soon.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the author, publisher and NetGalley for sending me this advanced reader’s copy in return for a fair, frank, and honest review.

I had high hopes for this book as a lot of my fellow bookworms raved about it, unfortunately it fell flat. I was engrossed initially but felt that so many twists and turns left me a bit confused at times. I was unable to connect with the characters and felt like Virginia was very unlikeable. I appreciated the storyline and the journey that all 12 of the women went on together, and, within themselves but it just could not keep me interested. I have ever read anything by this author before but will try more of her books.

The Arctic Fury is quite the adventure! This is a well-researched story that will captivate you and take you to the absolute middle of nowhere. Virginia, leader of this expedition, has a team of 12 women of different professions. They don't know each other at all in the beginning but they must learn to depend on one another. They travel by several different means from Boston all the way into the Arctic in search of some missing men.

Because of events that happened on their journey, on her return, Virginia finds herself in jail and accused of murder. The chapters alternate between the women's travels a year earlier and Virginia being on trial. I was on the edge of my seat with heart racing as I got closer and closer to the end.

Although this is not journey that I would want to take, I really enjoyed reading about it. The explorers of the past were tough as nails and full of grit; I on the other hand am a wimpy girl enjoying my air conditioned home.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.

I was expecting an atmospheric and thrilling story about the formidable willpower and resilience of female explorers, determined against all odds to go on an expedition into the Arctic. Sadly, this was anything but that.
Most of the female characters felt very one-dimensional and fade into the background.
There was a complete lack of descriptions of the Arctic, details on the women’s time ‘on the ice’, how they spent months alone in the wilderness, how they hunted together. There weren’t any details regarding their thoughts, fears and emotions. The focus was more on the social norms and appropriate behavior of women during the 19th century than actual survival.
This is ultimately a story about a trial and a woman who has given up hope of being acquitted of a crime she did not commit. The courtroom scenes dragged very slowly and were often annoying and overly dramatic. Everything is eventually revealed in the last 10% of the book and by that time the plot twists have become predictable. The ending felt rushed and mundane.
