Who doesn’t love to read a book about reading and books? Throw in Scotland as well and this sounds fabulous.
The story unfolds with Nina who is about to be laid off and needs to decide what she wants to do in a town that is losing its libraries. What does a librarian do if there are no libraries to work in? She rethinks her life and decides to open her own little bookshop on wheels. In order to do this she ends up in Scotland in a small farm town trying to sell books from a van. It is a lovely story about friendship and preservation through change. About half way through the book tries to change into a romance story. This I didn’t see coming and it felt a little awkward. Otherwise it is a lovely story that makes for a cute read.

Thank you Netgalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

A cute story about a little bookshop. Quirky, light, and fun. Perfect as a transitional book between books with more depth. Very enjoyable

Holy cow! I LOVED this book. Or, shall I say, I love this author. The author started the book with a note to the reader, about being a reader.... Right there, I was totally engrossed. In fact, I was a little bummed that the novel started after her note because I could have just read notes from her the rest of the days and been happy. The book, too, was a joy to read! So wonderful to have found this author. I have a new go-to whenever I want my spirits lifted.

Loved this book and the love of books by a community who so needs books, the characters, the message to proactively make your dreams come true!

I enjoy reading Jenny Colgan's books. They're light, fun, and just interesting enough to keep you reading 'til the end. The characters are well fleshed out, and the scenery worthy of a picture. The story is simple, but sometimes that's all you want out of a book. Nina is a bit of a ditz, but I feel like she's very relatable to many of us who struggle sometimes to find our way. As with all of Ms. Colgan's books, The Bookshop on the Corner just makes you feel happy. My only issue with this book is the American title, I feel it doesn't make any sense, and wish they would have left it alone.
I received this title from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I rather enjoyed this tale of taking risks with some romance thrown in along with some beautiful Scottish scenery. Nina has been working at the city library for years when cuts come along, and her job is eliminated. Nina takes a chance to pursue her dream of opening a bookstore. Discovering that she can’t afford to rent a building, she decides to take her dream mobile and ends up with a former bread delivery van that she transforms into a bookmobile.

Nina ends up in Scotland, lucks into a great place to live, and some finds herself getting incorporated into the town life. I enjoyed some funny moments for her as she discovers how delicious food can be in this area, along with the quarterly highland dances. There are a few bumps along the road with her romance, but she ultimately ends up with the right man! She prides herself on finding the right book for everyone and her toddler story times are booming. Will Nina find her happily ever after or should she go back to the city?

I was excited to see that this is #1 in a series and I will clearly seek out the next two because this one was such fun.

I’ve been wanting to read a Jenny Colgan book for some time now so The Book Shop on the Corner was my first. Her covers are always so beautiful, serene, and inviting, and this one was no exception. I was in the mood for an easy and lighthearted story, which ultimately led me to choosing this.

Honestly, I found myself a little bored with the first half of the story. The pacing was slow and I just couldn’t see where the story was headed. The second half definitely picked up a bit, but I hated the love triangle that Nina was involved in. Her courtship with Marek was sweet while it lasted, but no sooner did that relationship end and she was already head over heels with someone new— I’m purposely keeping it vague to prevent any spoilers. I also think it’s important that readers fall in love when reading a love story, but I didn’t see the appeal of the new guy.

Nina, as a main character, was strong and resolute. I admired her for her ability to leave her old life behind, move to a place she knew nothing about, and start a new life for herself with little help from anyone else. I enjoyed Nina’s love of books and her ability to pair each person with the perfect read. I like being able to identify with the characters of a book and Nina was one that I could appreciate.

I thought the title was a bit misleading because it led me to believe the novel was going to have something to do with a bookshop on a corner, but there was none. While this certainly wasn’t a dealbreaker, I just don’t understand the decision to call a book by a name that is unrelated to its content considering many people make the decision to read a book based on the information provided on the cover alone. I honestly kept reading, thinking the success of her book van would eventually lead Nina to buy a bookshop on the corner, but my anticipation was unfounded.

Overall, I did enjoy the book. It just was not the novel I was expecting when I first started reading.

A delightful read! Nina has a dream...a dream to leave everything behind...her job, her home, and everything that’s familiar. Nina wishes to have a traveling bookstore. Will she be able to succeed? Watch as she meets all sorts of characters along the way!

As a librarian with a love of books, this title appealed to me at first glance. Nina Redmond is a librarian with a passionate love of matching books to readers, When her library switches from books to media, she converts an old van to a bookmobile and sets off for a remote area of Scotland to continue her mission of pairing books and readers. After a slow start, her service is welcomed, and she encounters many interesting characters. She develops romantic relationships with two men and the resulting conclusion is predictable. The book was a fast read, with a charming setting, and some eccentric characters.

I did not receive this book for the intention of review as it was published 4 years ago. I received this as part of a free giveaway on Facebook for anyone that requested it, and the required delivery method was NetGalley. It is 2020 and this book was written in 2016. Therefore, the intention is not for advanced reviews. I will say that it’s a cute and predictable read when you are looking for something easy. I really enjoy another series by this author, so this one just wasn’t as good to me but nevertheless still enjoyable. Thank you Book Club Girls Facebook group page for the giveaway.

Is there anything more satisfying than reading a book about books? I don't think so.

The Bookshop on the Corner is a sweet romance about Nina, a librarian who gets fired from her job and starts a new life driving a van-turned-mobile-bookshop through Scotland. The descriptions of the country are luscious and the characters are all people you wish you could actually meet. I wasn't sure what was going to happen - the author throws a bunch of misdirects at you, which I appreciated - but I was very happy with Nina's version of a happily ever after.

3.5 stars

This is a cute little book about a woman in England named Nina, about to lose her librarian job. She decides to buy a wonky old van up in Scotland & run a bookmobile. The story follows her adventures amongst the eccentric characters in the little Scottish town she ends up in. Though the story is a little more chick-lit or cozy than I normally read, I quite enjoyed it. I recently finished The Bookish Life of Nina Hill, which is in a similar vein & I much preferred this one. I also appreciated that Nina bought & set up the bookmobile herself with various trial & tribulations. I get tired of seeing books where characters conveniently inherit places like bookstores or mansions. A definite feel-good novel & I will be reading the continuation novel soon.

This was a sweet story about life and how it can twist us to places we never dreamed of. Nina spent her entire life in books and was quite happy being a librarian until the library was closed. Forced to think of what could make her happy she stumbles upon a village in desperate need of books which suits her dream of selling books. She buys a van and moves to Scotland - completely unprepared for her new adventure. I enjoyed this story a lot, it was sweet and full of love able characters that kept my interest.

I'm so happy to have finally discovered Jenny Colgan's books!

Nina loves her job as a librarian: pairing the right book with the right person is her passion. But when she loses that job, she moves to a sleepy village and transforms a van into a bookmobile and changes lives with every stop it makes.

This book was utterly charming. I loved Nina's voice and heart. Everything about this reminded me of a Maeve Binchy novel and she's one of my favorites. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and WIlliam Morrow through the Book Club Girls for providing this copy for review.

What a sweet story! So fun and uplifting. What book lover does not dream of opening their own bookshop? In this story, Nina ends up opening a bookshop in a van. She shared books and stories with book lovers of all ages in a sleepy little town far from home. It’s there, doing what she loves that she finds fulfillment and hope.

A librarian is made redundant when the library she works for is bought out. She sees this as an opportunity to make a change in her life and moves to northern Scotland to open her own traveling bookstore. She is a romantic who is not sure she will find the kind of love she reads about in books, especially because her best friend falls in and out of love regularly. Ms. Colgan captures the beauty and isolation and village life in her descriptions of the Scottish village. I could see it in my mind’s eye as I was reading and it made me want to go back and visit Scotland.

The Bookshop on the Corner is a modern, British take on the Classic American novel by Christopher Morley, Parnassus on Wheels, one of my very favorite books. A young librarian in Birmingham, England realizes that she’s about to lose her job as libraries are consolidated and moved toward social media. She dreams of opening a mobile bookstore. Trying to find a vehicle to outfit for this bookstore on wheels takes her to Scotland. Along the way, she makes friends and finds a community into which she fits.

This is an interesting story, and like the original, at its heart is both the love of books and a romance. Nina knows that she’s excellent at paring people with books they love to read. She realizes that in the small Scottish town where she finds her van, there’s a real need for a source for affordable books. She finds the people delightful, and decides to make the move. She finds a gorgeous barn apartment to rent from a local farmer, a gruff man who often seems distracted. She also befriends, or is befriended, by a two trainmen, one of whom she has romantic thoughts about. This friendship exhibits in fun and unusual ways. Things change, another man moves forward, and things get a bit steamy, but not specific. Books, however, always remain at the forefront of this book.

I adored this book. I think it’s part of a series, for I see that there’s another called The Bookshop by the Sea by the same author. I hope so. I definitely intend to check that book out once I make a dent in my current to-be-read pile.

This is a mesmerizing read, quick and page turning in the best way. It will leave you feeling happy and satisfied.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley. I thank them for their generosity, but it had not effect on this review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.
