Funny entertaining sharp commentary.a view of the world today Trudeau with his viewpoint entertains makes us laugh and think.#netgalley #lewser
This was Ok. The art was really good but I did find some of the comics boring and not that funny but not a bad time waster book if you need some light reading.
Winner! Thoroughly enjoyed this latest collection this latest collection by Garry Trudeau. Doonesbury characters have aged like whine.
Its election season in the USA. And if you are an American tired of the idiosyncratic behavior of a particular US leader, and is left with nothing but curses, you might as well get into Doonesbury cartoons, because it is at hopeless times that cartoons look
much more appealing.
Lewser is the third book in the Trump series of Doonesbury, the other two being- Yuge! and Sad! .
Dig in if you haven't had enough of Doonesbury from your daily newspaper, This book chronicles the unforgettable deeds done by the ginger-head ruler during his term.
You’ll have a glance at the big and small happenings during the time of Trump- the Mueller report, Junior's "alleged" involvement in Russian collusion, the “witch hunt”, porn star Daniels’s episode, Trump Wall, Trump’s friendship with MBS (even after Khashoggi’s assassination) and Trump’s all-time hit at the media as “fake news”.
You'll see President's relationship with "truth" and curse words. There are also comments upon Trump's supporters (hushh!!).
Pulitzer Prize winner Trudeau is ready to come up with a total lampooning of Donald Trump at the most crucial time- US Presidential elections. America is surcharged with election fever, and what more can you ask for now when you can get a whole bunch of lampoons, targeted at the absurdity that America has gone through the Trump rule.
Oh and don't get excited so soon: there is a whole chapter dedicated to the "witch hunt" of Trump's brain!!
The book is set to have a market release on 7th July. Do check it out for a humorous election read.
Lewser! is another collection of Doonesbury strips in the age of Donald Trump. The usual crew are back, doing pretty much what you would expect of them. There are some gems, amongst them Roland's attempts to shill for Trump in his Fox role, including asking Sarah Palin to clarify whether Trump is an idiot or a moron. There are a few belly laughs, but it mostly evokes wry smiles.
Of course Trudeau is preaching to the converted on Trump; he knows that his audience is almost exclusively progressives and he has a bit of fun skewering some of us as well. This collection won't win many new fans, but it's a welcome distraction for those who have long enjoyed Trudeau's acid wit.
I did laugh a couple of times, but overall the satire feels a bit.. toothless - nowhere near as scorching as is necessary for a putrid subject like Trump and his administration.
It's the kind of satire for people who thought putting up Hillary Clinton as a candidate to thwart Trump was a good idea. People who talk a lot about 'common decency' while getting hosed with a Trumpian shit spray. People who unironically end posts with #TheResistance.
Admirable, but Sad
Mark Twain, (or Steve Allen, or possibly Lenny Bruce), said that "[t]ragedy plus time equals comedy." The problem with any book about Trump, or even, (maybe especially), a book like this about Trump, is that the tragedy is so great and the time is so close, (we're still in it and maybe will be for a while), there is hardly any room yet for comedy. But political humor is in the moment, and this is Trump's moment. Sad.
At least this book is a testament to the fact that Trudeau still has it. His wit, his timing, and his ability to make a cutting point with just a few well chosen words is on full display here. That skill, artistry, and style make this an admirable book. And who knows; maybe with this third, and hopefully final, volume, the "Doonesbury in the Time of Trump" series will capture some of the mania of the Trump presidency for future generations. You know, with that whole "passage of time" thing.
(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for an advanced copy of this comic compilation in exchange for an honest review.
LEWSER! at first glance looks like it would be a book of comics making fun of President Trump, but it's really a collection of comics commenting on the political climate in 2020 leading up to the election. While there is an glaringly obvious political slant to the content, a lot of the comics are more of a slice of life than anything.
If you have certain opinions, you probably wouldn't pick this up anyway, but the art is reminiscent of that you'd find in the classic Sunday newspaper. It offers thoughtful and humorous commentary on the world that we find ourselves living in.
