This. This is the kind of book I wish would never end. It grabbed me by the face from the very first page and never let go. This is one of those books that seems to be... Too Good To Be True. (So sorry... I just had to do it!) Carola Lovering’s writing is truly mesmerizing and a joy to read. I was so sucked in by every. single. page. I’m typically the type who professes, “The twistier, the better!!!” And it’s true. But fabulous writing trumps all else. I read so many books with crazy twists that I always play mind games with myself imagining plot twists and looking for evidence and clues that I’m right. I found that here but it actually made me enjoy it even more. Like I was in on it with the author. Covering my mouth and giggling like a child. I refuse to give away any spoilers whatsoever so there really isn’t much I can tell you that you haven’t already read in the synopsis but I will say that Lovering writes her characters with so many facets and so much dimension. Even the ones I want to hate, I just can’t. I do know that Too Good To Be True is already on my list of favorite books of 2021 and I don’t see it going anywhere anytime soon. You NEED to reach this book.
Thank you so much to St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley for allowing me the incredible privilege of reading this book in advance in exchange for my honest review.
A psychological thriller that alternately had me ‘furious’ and enthralled. In other words, it’s a very good story capturing my attention. The characters are pretty well developed and believable.
Excellent book very well written the plot was amazing and keep you guessing until the end, i loves the characters, easy to read.
I just really did not like this book. The title was trite and didn't fit. I didn't like any of the characters except for one. It needs editing which is funny when you know one of the characters is a book editor. Would not recommend.
Beautiful and wealthy, Skye Starling appears to be the perfect catch. As she approaches thirty, she is surrounded by friends who are either engaged, married, or are starting a family. Skye's battle with OCD, which she has had since her mother passed away when she was eleven, has always complicated any romantic relationship she pursues. When she meets Burke Michaels, a handsome older man, he seems to be too good to be true. A whirlwind romance quickly leads to an engagement much to the dismay of her family and friends. When something appears too good to be true it probably is...because Burke has a secret agenda and Skye is the perfect target.
Too Good to Be True is a twisty domestic thriller told through a mixture of journal entries and present day events. Skye Starling is a beautiful and wealthy young woman who desires a happily ever after but her compulsions push her to a life of isolation and shame. Burke Michaels appears to be the perfect catch but through a series of journal entries we quickly discover that he is already happily married with a family and has ulterior motives for romancing Skye. Through another series of journal entries we meet an adolescent, Heather, who's determined to make something of herself by get out of her small town and away from her troubled boyfriend Burke. As the plot thickens and twists the stories begin to merge into a twisted tale of love and revenge. Although I did figure out the "twist" pretty early on there were still a few surprises along the way. The novel was well written, entertaining, and hard to put down. This is a must read for fans of domestic thrillers who love surprises.
This was such a great book. This book will keep you up at night. I loved all the characters and how they were developed throughout the book. The story takes you along and then you are suddenly slammed with a turn in the road. This book has delicious twists and turns that captivates you and makes you want more. I love books that surprise me and this book did just that. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Loved this! Gripping story, featuring sub stories which all link up fabulously ! Loved it all would def recommend!
Too Good To Be True by Carola Lovering is an amazing, keep you guessing, suspenseful story. Skye is a young, financially successful woman living her best life until she meets Burke. Skye's whole world turns upside down, for the best! She has finally met her Prince Charming. After a whirlwind romance, Burke proposes and the wedding planning begins. Everything in Skye's life is perfect, or is it? Skye begins to get mysterious emails from an ex-boyfriend. Skye's friends don't think Burke is everything he seems, but is that because he is so much older? The mystery begins to unwrap and keeps you guessing until the last chapter.
Carola Lovering wrote this from Burke, Skye, and Heather's point of view. Some are written as journal entries and some as flashbacks from the past. Lovering clearly identifies each chapter and is very easy to follow long. Her writing is easy to read and she does an excellent job at keeping your attention throughout.
I will be recommending this book to others and looking for others works by Lovering. Special thanks to St. Martin's Press, NetGalley and Carola Lovering for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest opinion. 5 stars #NetGalley
Good read! I thought I knew where this story was headed and I was completely wrong - which I LOVE! Really fun, quick read.
Good book. Took me way too long to finish this story which, to me, is indicative of a lack of a grab.
Too Good To Be True was my first book by Carola Lovering and I have a feeling it won't be my last. She provided a story that was filled with characters that I felt for and characters that I just didn't like. But she did it by writing a story based on unreliable narrators to make sure she had you wondering what was going on, especially in the first half. It was a little soap opera like, but that added to the appeal.
This story is told in 2 parts and in 3 POVs (Burke, Skye and Heather). A couple in their 40's seems to be going through a "mid life crisis" and is looking to dig themselves out of hole they continuously find themselves in. We get to know the characters very well by the way the story is written and the character development.
The first half goes back and forth in time. Heather's POV is in the past and Skye and Burke are in the present. With the addition of having diary entries to get to know the characters and their actions added a fun, yet evil twist. This was the part that really made me angry with certain characters.
If you can, I would recommend going in as blind as you can, so you can be surprised by the twists and the characters and their actions. The plot was entertaining and overall, I enjoyed the story and the twist. I had some hate for certain characters, but that is because Lovering did such an amazing job with creating Skye, Heather and Burke and their backstories. She really made you want to root for some and kick others. I felt the first half was a little slow and didn't always have me glued to the page, but I was invested in the journey and where it was taking me. The second half totally threw me for a loop in the best way possible. The ending was a little too "wrapped in a bow" for me, but still worked for the story.
Overall enjoyed it and liked the unreliable narrators.
Which unreliable narrator will you believe?
This is one of those really hard ones to review. While I sped through reading it, I found it pretty predictable and a complete *spoiler* Gone Girl knock off. Told in the veiw points of 3 people Skye who's smart, beautiful, and comes from money but has rotten luck in love as she has some personal issues ever since her mother died. Cue the perfect man finally walks into her life. Adding his viewpoint and a third (former/current?) relationship of his.
This was indeed a fun, wild ride and if you can suspend disbelief at a lot of questionable choices from the main character and don't take too hard a look at the actual plot it was fine for what it's supposed to be. Would make a good vacation quick read and for those who like books like Woman in the Window and Girl on a Train.

Too Good to Be True by Carola Lovering is the story of finding peace, love, and stability through revenge, manipulation, and obsession. Heather Price is a teen who takes a babysitting job for the well-to-do Libby Fontaine and her husband, Nate. Libby and Heather hit it off and become friends of a sort. When a tragedy strikes, Heather spends the rest of her life consumed with the Fontaine's.
The Fontaine kids are all grown up, but Heather still lurks in the shadows. As some twists complicate Heather's plan of revenge, she sets her sights on Skye Starling, Libby's daughter. Let the games begin!
Heather is psycho and has one thing in mind. Poor Skye suffers from OCD and thinks she'll never find love. The middle man, Burke Michaels, has a lot to sort out.
It's a really good read! The timelines are great. The pace is pretty quick. The characters are interesting. This is definitely a stay-up-all-night-to-finish read.
Oh man the title of this story is so on point. Each chapter is by a different character we start with Skye Starling in March 2019 when her boyfriend Burke Michaels proposes to her after a whirlwind 6-month courtship. Skye seems to have it all she is young, beautiful and from a very wealthy family. But she has been dealing with crippling OCD since her mom’s death when she was 12 which has derailed every attempt at a romantic relationship she has had until she meets Burke. His chapters start in Sept 2018 when he meets Skye and begins their relationship and are journal entries that are set up like letters to his therapist Dr. K. We get an idea that Burke is not who he seems and he is just using Skye for his own nefarious purposes. Then we have a 30-year leap in the past starting in Oct 1989 when Heather is 16 and a junior in high school and she first meets Libby Fontaine who is everything Heather wants to be until tragedy strikes.
So this started out and I was a pretty bored through the first ¼ of the book since it seemed on the surface very straightforward and I thought I knew what was coming next. But then the twist happened and I was left reeling and going hold on what is this. So after that the plot picked up speed and was really enjoyable and I couldn’t put it down. I keep just marveling at every new twist and how everything played out was very satisfying. It was interesting to read each character’s point of view and realize that you don’t know what the truth is until the very end. After a slow start I really enjoyed reading this and I love when stuff catches me by surprise like this did.
Thanks to St. Martins Press and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.
This book was a whirlwind for me. I was instantly hooked by the premise, the characters and became invested in finding out how everything wrapped up. The big twist was foreseeable but did catch me by surprise. I enjoyed 75-80 percent of the book. The last 20 percent became frustrating to read. It turned into this love story, and I was not here for it. I don't need to like the characters in a book, but Skye was so frustratingly dumb and annoying that I kept facepalming towards the end. I gave this book 4 stars because it was a solid 5 stars for most of the book and then tapered off towards the end. I would definitely read more from this author!
Presented as “an obsessive, addictive love story for fans of Lisa Jewell,” Too Good To Be True by Carola Lovering sounded like perfect escape-the-pandemic-shutdown reading. Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley I received a copy in exchange for my honest review. TBH, I read it a month or so ago and today, when I needed something to read, I started reading it again and thought “wow, this sounds vaguely familiar.” I read a bit and could not for the life of me remember it, so I had to do a refresher skim to bring it back.
The story is told from multiple points of view, and involves a young woman, Skye Starling, who is super excited when her boyfriend, Burke Michaels, proposes after a whirlwind courtship. Her mother died when Skye was only eleven, and she’s been a little off since then. Lots of OCD and no ability to have a successful romantic relationship — until now.
Burke is handsome, older, and seems more emotionally mature than any of her previous relationships. Interspersed with Skye’s wedding preparation, we get things from Burke’s POV, and quickly realize he is a liar. The letters to his therapist indicate he is ALREADY married (supposedly happily), and likely sees Skye (and her $$) as an answer to his immediate problem.
The third perspective is told from a 17-year-old named Heather, who lives in a not-great part of town and has been dating a local “bad boy” named Burke. She wants to get away and make a better life for herself in New York City. Clearly, there is a collision coming involving Burke, his early-in-life girlfriend who knew him when, and sweet young Skye.
It’s convoluted and intricate and clearly forgettable, since I didn’t remember much of it at all. But it held my interest at the time, and I didn’t guess everything — and it DID take me away from pandemic shutdown for a couple of days, so that’s worth four stars, in my book!
Excellent read! This story is told from 3 characters' POViews. I suggest NOT reading the summary. Here's what you should know:
Burke tells his story of growing up in a bad area and the choices he's made that ultimately lead him to meeting Skye. Skye tells her story of losing her Mom at a young age and how she meets Burke. Heather's story will bring all three of these characters together in a delicious and TWISTY way. I read this in 2 days!
This was a really good read. The book grabbed me right away. I love the style of the authors writing.
I did figure out some of the book at the beginning but so much more is revealed later that I. Did not know about.
It is about a couple who try and steal money from a young girl. But so much more to the story than that.
4 solid stars. The character development in this was really impressive; as I approached the ending, I truly understood the motives for each character in the choices they made. I feel the suspense did die down as Part 2 approached, and the big "twist" was fairly predictable, but it didn't make this any less enjoyable. I'll definitely be looking out for more from this author.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Y'all, I'm not even gonna lie, this book hooked me!
Too Good to be True is not your ordinary run-of-the-mill thriller. This is a story where you will get to deeply know and care for these superbly developed characters. The plot moves at a great pace and it keeps you coming back for more. I'm a sucker for an unreliable narrator and multiple POVs. And that twist! SO well done. I absolutely loved it and look forward to reading more from this author.
