Skye is twelve years old and absolutely loves and adores her mother. The problem is that Skye doesn’t realize that her mother has some deep seated issues of her own. Skye’s mother, Libby Fontaine, always encouraged Skye, when she was anxious or having issues, to count to 8 and count from 8 down to 1. Little did Libby realize, she was causing her daughter, Skye to become obsessive compulsive. Libby became very ill with cancer and passed away when Skye was only 12. As soon as her mother passed, the OCD ruled her life, even in high school. The OCD caused Skye to be very conscious of how strange her actions of knocking on doors to the count of 8 up and 8 down before she could walk through doors. She was teased constantly at school. because of her OCD. The OCD also made her feel very insecure; therefore, she didn’t really date. She had only four very best friends, who she felt very comfortable with and who knew all about her OCD. As a young woman, Skye eventually met Burke Michaels. Burke is tall, handsome, and such a gentleman. Skye feels that they have a real connection. They talk for hours. Burke doesn’t even make a big deal about her little OCD issues. He even tells Skye that he has had an issue of his own and that he has had a battle with alcoholism and drug addiction. He has been totally sober for over 20 years. He feels that they both can relate to each other, because of their issues. Why isn’t he married at 46 years old? Skye and Burke begin to spend as much time as possible with each other. Eventually Burke proposes to Skye and she accepts. However, Skye’s best friend, Andie, is totally against it, because the two have only known each other for a short time. She stressed to Skye that neither of them really know each other. Skye and Burke move into together. However, Burke keeps taking off for work and no one really knows where he goes. What is he hiding? Should Skye be worried? The wedding is planned and since Skye has a huge inheritance, the wedding planning goes off without any issues. They spend a glorious honeymoon in Europe for ten days. When they return from the honeymoon, Andie, calls her and tells her she needs to come to her apartment immediately. Skye arrives to Andie’s apartment, and isn’t prepared for what Andie has to show her. What could it possibly be? What could go so wrong? What has Burke done? Will this affect her marriage to her new husband? This book is a great psychological thriller, so I won’t go into depth with the plot. However, the plot was genius, and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. There are so many twists and turns. The character development was great. The reader could relate to the antagonist and the protagonist. I enjoyed this book very much.
What a twist! This story kept me guessing and in suspense. I was clueless as to what was coming next. Told from 3 POV’s the story has you wondering how well do you know someone?
Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book. Moved at a fast enough pace to keep my interest. I liked the story line and character development. Thank you to Netgalley for opportunity to read this pre-release.
Too Good to Be True is a tale of love, loss and betrayal, with a twisty ending. Skye Starling has been plagued by OCD since she was 12 years old, and this OCD interferes with her adult life, especially in the world of romantic relationships. It seems that no one can see beyond her psychological issues to the wonderful human that struggles with those issues. Skye, having inherited a lot of money from her family, does not want for much, outside of love. Then she meets Burke Michael's, an older, attractive man, while at Montauk with her friend, and life changes for the better. Burke doesn't seem to care about the quirks of her OCD, but he does seem to car ea lot about her, something she has dreamed about but had stopped thinking she was going to find.
Meanwhile, many years in the past, another tale is told about Heather, a young woman who went through trauma as well, at the age of 16. This loss and the pain and anger surrounding it, changes Heather forever, along with what she wants and how she is willing to get what she wants.
Both women are looking for their view of happily ever after. Will they find it? Or are they on a collision course towards more heartache and tragedy?
Too Good to Be True was a gripping, well told tale. I was very much able to suspend my disbelief for the two days it took me to plow through it. The characters are well defined and easy to love, or hate, depending.... and even those you may hate, you also cannot help but feel for them, too. A good vacation read!
Twists and turns and surprising reveals in this thriller narrated from 3 different point of views. Sky is thrilled when her handsome boyfriend Burke wants to marry her in a whirlwind romance. Sky's friends think she is rushing into things and Burke is "Too good to be true". But what could Burke be hiding and why is he in such a rush to get married? Who is the narrator Heather and what does she have to do with Sky and Burke's upcoming wedding?
You will quickly read this book to find out the answers to these questions and will come upon an interesting turn of events towards the ending.
The story had lots of potential. The story line is interesting with a few good twists. However the characters were awful. Skye should wear a sign saying abuse me, use me. Heather and Burke are total users. There was just nothing I liked about the characters. Too bad cause the book could have been a winner with better likable folks in it.
I just finished reading "Too Good to Be True" by Carola Lovering. Right from the start I could barely put it down! The chapters of the book are from the perspective of three different characters, though the main character is a woman named Skye. The twists keep coming in this book and I would recommend it to everyone! It kept me enthralled the entire novel.
I usually take my time with a book to enjoy the style and setting as well as the story. From the first chapter, Too Good to Be True had me flying to find out what happened next. Yes, the prose is appealing. Yes, the setting is interesting and well-drawn. But the unavoidable magnet is the twisting, suspenseful, galloping momentum of the story. Told through letters, diaries, notes to therapists, the story develops on two time planes--what happened 30 years ago in one setting, and what`s happening in the last couple of years in another. I belever Too Good to Be True will be a blockbuster in 2021. Bravo, Carola Lovering!
Thanks to Net Galley for the advance copy to review.
Wow ,this book has so many twists and turns I couldn’t put it down the suspense of not knowing what’s next was killing me.....definitely a book worth reading....great cast of characters nd excellent writing
Skye is 29, smart and really rich. She also suffers from OCD which stopped her from having serious relationships. Then she meets Burke, 10 years older than her. He proposes and she is happier than she ever thought she would be. But it is all happening so fast, is it too good to be true? Full of twists and drama, a very enjoyable read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I couldn’t put this book down. It kept getting deeper and deeper into the characters and their stories. The way it weaves together through three points of view made it hard to put down and not come back to it immediately. Thank you!!!
Excellent. Brilliant. Packed full of deceit and lies. Absolutely creepy in how REALISTIC this book is.
I finished reading this book a few days ago and I still can't stop thinking about it. Too Good To Be True is a mind-blowing psychological thriller which takes place in the present and thirty years ago. It's about one man, Burke, and the women he deceits, as well how he come to be this way. In particular, his current fiancee Skye doesn't know that she is just a pawn in his game, not the love of his life she thinks she is. In other words, the life she imagines with Burke is literally too good to be true because nothing about it is true.
Not only was I blown away at the whole scheme Burke set up and gets people to believe him, but also the many plot twists in this story, which I can't even hint at. The characters are also so realistic that I couldn't help but think what would I do in their situation.
Everyone should do themselves a favor and read this insanely twisted psychological thriller as soon as it is published.

Skye is young and rich, living in NYC, when she meets Burke, an attractive older man and they embark on a whirlwind romance. We quickly find out through Burke's journal entries to his therapist that all is not as it seems. Burke is married and in financial trouble.
This book grabbed me right away. It alternates between Skye in the current day, Burke through journal entries and Heather, Burke's wife, 30 years ago. I was immediately hooked. There were a couple of surprises, one I had sniffed out and one I was totally shocked by. I thought the book got a little bit slow toward the end, but it was really well written, with great character development and overall I loved it. I will definitely read more from this author.
Twists and turns and ups and downs and all around mind blowing story. Skye, Burke and Heather are a combustible combination. How their lives come together and how a tragedy links them forever is told in the three characters viewpoint. Brava Carols Lovering on such an engrossing book.
Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin Press publishers for an advanced reading copy.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. When I started reading this book, I actually thought I was reading another one. When I realized my mistake, I was already 15% into the book. No way could I stop and switch to the other book. This book reeled me in from the very beginning. Read the description of the book and then don't read it again, just mark the book as To Read, and start reading without reading the description again. The description actually gives away a few of the plots too early. The book is told from three points of view, and you're not sure who to believe. The ending isn't quite how thriller's usually end, and this also isn't the typical psychological thriller. You get as much wrapped up in the love story as you do the thriller. Although you may very well figure out certain parts of the story, there are other parts you won't see coming.
This was a really engaging read.
From the first few pages, I was hooked on the story of Burke and Skye, and I loved the fact that even though she was both beautiful and rich, Skye had some actual challenges to deal with.
For anyone who loves twisty suspense, you will not be bored here. I cannot wait to read Tell Me Lies next.
The description of this book prompted me to read it, and the characters and plot kept me reading. While at times it seemed a little far fetched, it was interesting and fast paced. The end seemed trite to me, but was still worth the read.
Loved the twists and turns of this book! Interesting plot, well developed characters and two "ah ha" moments!
Nicely done Carola! This one got me good!
I loved the different POVs and they way in which they were presented to us. I really connected with every character because I felt like i was growing up along side with them. I felt older as they grew older and wanted to stop time for them. Give them a redo or something. Time played such a crucial part of this story.
I loved the writing, the presentation and the characters. I read this in one day!!! couldn’t put it down!
And oh yesss...there’s a few twists! :)
Thank you for my free ARC in exchange for my honest review. 5 stars!
Too Good to be True is a fast-paced story that features a unique love triangle that shifts and evolves throughout the course of the story, with the twist in the novel actually occurring about halfway through the book and then playing it out over the second half. In the first half of the story the reader meets Skye a optimistic, but insecure and naive woman who falls hard for Burke - a man planning to make use of her trust fund account to support his family. The first half of the book also features his wife Heather, when the pair were just teenagers, and Heather meeting Libbie - a woman that would ultimately impact the direction of her life. Then something happens in present time that one member of the love triangle didn't plan that makes them willing to look out only for themselves, and the other two reassessing what they think they know. In some regards I struggled with the first half of the book a little, because while Skye seemed nice she also seemed pathetically naive and trusting. The second half of the book made the story so much better and worth reading!
