I was enjoying this book at first and thought that the journal entries tied in really well with the story. I made the mistake of reading reviews while still reading this and I saw a review that compared this to a certain book. I won't say which book but suddenly everything clicked into place and I realized I knew how this was going to end. This didn't mean it was bad at all even though it was predictable and I will most likely forget about it. I liked the mental illness and OCD representation too. Once we got to the second half it dragged on a little.
Thank you to Netgalley and to St Martins Press for an advanced copy of this book!
Thank you to the publisher for my copy of this one - all opinions are my own.
This book is MAGNIFICENT......which is the first thing I want to say, as I loved Carola's first book and I was worried this wouldn't be as good. I was wrong. It's even better.
This is the kind of highly delicious, twisting, trust no one, character drama/psychological thriller that I adore. I was sucked in from the very start of this one, and I really had no idea how it would come together, but I loved when it all fell into place.
I love that Carola can write these characters that you simultaneously love and then sometimes loathe. Characters where you can't decide if you want to see them win or lose. Characters that are so layered and flawed and deviously human. It is incredibly compelling reading and I literally could not set this book down.
I always enjoy a book that moves perspectives, and I also loved that this moved from the past of some characters to the present. The way that the story unravels bit by bit - and even when you realize where the plot is headed you still just don't know where it will land.
100% a must read this year - this is the exact kind of absorbing and addicting story that is the perfect companion for wasting away an afternoon.
Really excellent psychological thriller. Lots of twists and interesting characters. Quite fun to read.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for my advance copy!
As an avid thriller reader, I can usually guess the plot twists ahead of time. Not with this one! Engaging and twisty!
Thank you NetGalley and St Marten's Press for the ARC of this title for an honest review.
Skye Sterling has it all, she's obscenely wealthy, beautiful, and has crippling OCD.... Her OCD started when her best friend, her mother passed away. Ever since her mother's death she has had to knock on door frames to enter and exit a building, which has made it almost impossible for her to find someone to date. Letting someone into her life has been a task for her. When she meets Burke her world changes, he accepts her as she is, OCD flaws and all. They have a whirlwind romance and get engaged after just a few months. Skye is desperate to get married on September 21, and so they rush the wedding and instead of waiting they decide to go for it. The wedding goes perfectly until Skye's best friend receives Burke's online journal sent to her in a mysterious email. This book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
An excellent domestic suspense/mystery. Told from multiple perspectives and across multiple perspective. I really enjoyed this book, although I guessed the big twist pretty early on so there was less of a mind-blowing effect. I did appreciate how the book went through a pretty thorough explanation to fit all of the pieces together. Overall, a quick, entertaining, and satisfying read!
This book was an absolute thrill ride and I could not decide who I was rooting for. Skye, the innocent younger woman who just wants to be loved, despite her flaws? Burke, the man who wants to have it all? Or Heather, the wife who is out for revenge? This book is very much in the style of Samantha Downing, with truly awful characters that you can't help rooting for anyway.
In alternating chapters we are told the story from all three perspectives. But which ones are real? What is the truth? What kind of web has been spun to ensnare all three. As the story unfolded, I could not put this down. It was fast-paced, fun, and absolutely thrilling. Whatever Carola Lovering puts out next, PLEASE give it to me!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
When Skye Starling finds the love of her life, is it too good to be true? While she is busy planning her wedding, her fiance is planning a different scheme. He is already married and you get to read the third prospective in the story from his current wife. The author does a wonderful job of intertwining all three narratives into one story that has many twists and turns that keep you engrossed until the end.
Too Good to Be True was the first book that I have read by Carola Lovering, but I plan to read Tell Me Lies and anything else she writes! This book was good! I read it in a couple of sittings, which says a lot since when I read it I was having a hard time focusing enough to read anything. This is just one of those books that hooks you from the first page to the last. This is also one of those books that is best to go into without knowing too much or the book will be ruined, and I'm not going to do that for you! So go in as blind as you can-you'll thank me!
What I will say, without ruining it, is the three POVs in alternating chapters really made this book. I figured out what was going on very early on, so when the big twist came, it was more of a "YES! I was right" moment than an OMG moment, but if the book had been written differently, I think I would have been more blah about the twist than excited that I was a good detective, if that makes sense.
Lovering allows you to get deeeep into the psyche of each of these three characters by alternating their POVs, and that really sets the stage and makes you wonder whose story is real? It's a brilliant look at how different people observe what's going on around them in different ways; perception is everything and what you think you "might" know isn't really true-instead of making assumptions or taking other people's word as fact, this book shows the importance of finding out the truth about someone/things for yourself.
This one is an excellent, suspense-filled ride that will make you go WOAH out loud several times.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the DRC. All opinions are my own.
Carola Lovering is back with another twisty book that will keep you guessing through every page. As recommended for most thrillers, don’t read too much about this one before picking it up so that you can be surprised when you read it. The story is told through three perspectives and in a way that makes you question who is lying and who is telling the truth. The first half of the book does an amazing job of laying everything out for the second – so much so that the second part is mostly a confirmation of what you already know – but that doesn’t make it any less fun to read about here. Without giving away any part of the plot, I will say that this one is wedding related and was such a fun one to read while I’m planning my own. Needless to say, I’m glad that Michael and I spent over four years together and lived together for three before getting engaged because this book would have me questioning everything about my relationship if I didn’t know what I was getting myself into.
For about the first half of the book, I was so so confused. I started to feel frustrated about the three POVs right before part two began and after that, WOW. My mind was slightly blown. I think the execution was awesome, and everything really came together in the second half of the book. In the end, I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for NetGalley for proving me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
I really enjoyed this one. I didn’t read about it ahead just saw some reviews that my fellow good read friends enjoyed it. I liked the different points of view switching back and forth. The twists surprised me a couple times. It also kept me interested and exciting to pick it up each night. Thanks to the publishers and netgalley for the early release copy.
One of the rare books that I went in blind. I knew it was a thriller but did not read anything more. And am I glad I did that.
I would suggest going in blind and sit back and enjoy the thrilling ride.
The story has three POVs and the way the three POVs blend together one keeps on wondering whether the information is accurate or not. You keep guessing and you keep reading because one can't help but turn the pages to know how this psychological thriller will pan out.
Too Good to be True is a thriller about revenge, deception, secrets and lies. It is a page-turner that has some surprising twists and turns which completely throw you off.
My mini grouse with the story was that I would have liked a darker and sinister ending. Having said that it did not take away the enjoyment of reading this addictive and entertaining book.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for sending a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Woooooow, that was EPIC!!!
if i have to define my favorite kind of psychological thrillers, this book would be my answer.
I don't know where to begin.
The plot was amazing, from the very start it gets you hooked, i looved Skye's personality, she was so ...real, also, the author did an amazing job describing her disorder, it's not everyday that you find an author who can describe ocd compulsions this vividly.
Burke's letters to his therapist were amazing, they were written so well, to keep you guessing and stay within the loop.
And don't get me started with the plot twist at the first half of the book, it was so unpredictable, and made the book even more awesome.
Overall, an A+ read.
*Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review*
Twisty thriller - 4 out of 5 – this book had me hooked from the get go. I really enjoyed the format with multiple POVs and timelines in the book. Definitely kept it fast paced & left me wanting to learn more!
Thank you Carola Lovering, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. #TooGoodToBeTrue #NetGalley
This is one of those books that I’m not quite sure how to review. I enjoyed it - I read it over the course of two days, so clearly it held my interest- but in the end it fell a little flat for me
This book is described as being a thriller. I’m thinking that may be the reason why I expected a little more. There are definitely some psychological twists and turns, but I wouldn’t necessarily agree that it’s a thriller.
Overall, a good solid read. Rounding up from 3.5 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
Be prepared for so many twists in this story. It was riveting, I really hated one of the main characters as they were so believable - or so I thought. Although there are multiple time periods in this story it all connects nicely and the ending will have you pondering what happened. A good book club selection.
Wowzers. That was amazing and intense. So many twists and turns and misdirections and lies and pure evil deviousness! I loved it. None of the characters were truly likeable, yet I was engrossed and invested and actually felt bad for all but one of them. Just when you think you know what's going on, you're taken in a different direction. The only reason it's not 5 stars for me is that I didn't care for where it ended up.
I read this book sometime last year and remember enjoying it. I think it was an entertaining binge-read, though I will say the end was a little cliche.
I really enjoyed this one!
A huge thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for my advanced copy.
This was another case of me missing the pub date.
Too Good To Be True was a Book of the Month selection and I gladly scooped it up.
What I Loved-
The Format- There are multiple POVs and multiple timelines in this book. Most of Burke's POV is told in a journal/ diary format. I equally enjoyed each separate POV. I loved the timelines as well.
The Writing- This book could have easily been binged in one day if I had the time. Once I reached Part Two I could not stop reading. Bedtime be damned.
The Twists- I cannot say that the twists blindsided me but I did enjoy them.
Why It Lost a Star- I'll be flagging this as spoilery.
* I wanted a different ending. I hate when characters do things with no consequences.
I wanted Skye to be stronger and kick Burke to the curb. It's almost like everyone got their ideal ending and I was hoping for something darker.
*The Rape/Assault- It felt misplaced and didn't tie into the plot. It was just something that happened to one of the main characters. Again- horrible people doing horrible things with no consequences.
*I still have questions- for example: why was Skye a target? What happened to her brother who was actually a playmate to the boy that drowned.
Overall- still very good. Definitely recommend this to other readers. I will be reading more by this author.
