Sam and Annie have moved to Sam's hometown, where Sam is a therapist working out of a home office. It turns out that from upstairs, you can hear all of Sam's sessions. Throughout Goodnight Beautiful, you think you know who people are, only to have all of your assumptions turned upside down. There was a moment near the beginning of the book that I thought about giving up on this one, because Sam and Annie were kind of boring me. Then I got to the first twist, realized everything I thought was happening was actually something very different, and it got more interesting. The book has some similarities with a famous Stephen King storyline, and the characters have an awareness of the similarities. Overall I thought this was a passable thriller but I didn't like it as much as Molloy's previous effort. Recommended for fans of unreliable narrators. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Lovely, dark, and a bit twisted. Dr. Statler and his new wife, Annie, have just moved to his old hometown, so he can be close to his mother, who is suffering from dementia. Little do they know how their new adventure will end but add a little Stephe King-esque excitement to the mix, and it becomes just Beautiful. Loved it!
A must-read, psychological thriller perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn.
Annie and Sam are newlyweds, just moved from New York City to Sam's hometown of Chestnut Hill. Sam has just started up his own local practice as a therapist and Annie is teaching women's studies at the local college. Everything seems to be going great for the newlyweds. But then Sam disappears. As the town comes together to look for him, Annie is left with Sam's past and his secrets. Did something happen to Sam? Or did he run away from his new wife and his problems, returning to the old playboy ways that everyone in Chestnut Hill remembers him for?
Fans of psychological thrillers will find Goodnight Beautiful hard to put down. Told from three different perspectives, the reader is led down a captivating rabbit hole, falling further into the mindsets of all three of the main characters until the truth about what happened to Sam is revealed. The plot is exciting and will keep readers guessing; chapters often leave the reader on the edge of their seat, needing to know what happens next. Each perspective is well written, with each character's personality shining through. Goodnight Beautiful is a fantastic psychological thriller sure to be keeping readers guessing from atop the bestseller list.
A huge thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read Goodnight Beautiful in advance of its release date.
Fast-paced, addictive and exquisitely chilling thriller. It started with a bang of a twist and didn’t let go. I couldn’t put it down until I’d finally turned the last page. Masterfully plotted, populated with rich intriguing characters. Aimee Molloy is a master of misdirection and perfectly timed revelations. Loved all the psychology woven into the story.
Aimee Molloy has gone above and beyond in this outstanding psychological thriller. The twists abound and just when I thought one thing, the book went in a completely different direction. I’m always pleased when a book surprises me with an unexpected twist and this book actually had several. This is an absolute page turner that will keep readers guessing right up to the last page.
A great follow up to her book The Perfect Mother, Aimee Malloy has delivered another page turner. Twists and turns to spare, it is hard to sum up without giving anything away. I stayed up way too late to finish it!
Wow!! Reading along thinking I've followed the plot when - it totally flips! Didn't know who was who - who was the crazy or if they all were.
Great Book - could not stop reading - had to find out what the heck was happening!
Well written - great thriller - one of the best I've read this year!
Good paced mystery kept me guessing through the last few chapters. Ending fell a little flat to me. Would recommend.
This is 100% the best thriller I've read this year... maybe one of my top thrillers EVER. The author really took it to the next level. I couldn't believe the assumptions I made as a reader - the book has really made me question my preconceived ideas on women in thrillers. This book was a total mind f*ck. Will recommend to everyone.
This book is almost an homage to past thrillers as much as it is a twisty tale. The book references the trend of having unreliable narrators and classics like Stephen King's Misery within the first few chapters. And while the book is its own story, it definitely uses plot points and devices from past thrillers, winking at us readers and daring to catch all of the references.
The book begins with alternating narrators telling about the weeks leading up to the disappearance of Dr. Sam Statler. You learn about Sam and Annie's whirlwind courtship, their role-playing game, their move to upstate New York to Sam's hometown, and about Sam's clients at his psychotherapy office. But when you reach the end of Part 1, everything you think you know is thrown out the window.
I actually went back and reread parts of Part 1 before going on, to reorient myself!
Sharing much more of the plot will destroy the twists of the book, and it is too enjoyable to do that!
Many recent thrillers are full of evil intent and unlikable characters, but Goodnight Beautiful is not. Even the "villain" is likeable in their own way and you might even find yourself feeling sorry for them. The ending is satisfying and positive, a welcome change from many thrillers I've read in the past couple of years.
I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Sam is a handsome psychologist and is married to Annie, a literature professor. They relocate from the city to his hometown to care for his ailing mother. Sam goes missing leaving unexplained debt and mysterious messages from a young French student. Twists galore in this mystery.
This one had me compulsively turning the pages. A twisty, twisted tale. Molloy grabs your attention from the beginning and weaves an unforgettable story. After enjoying her debut novel, I knew I wanted to read this one. She has moved her way on to my must read author list.
Thank you to the publisher through Netgalley for an advanced copy.

Sam is a handsome psychotherapist that has recently moved back to his small hometown with his wife. Growing up in this town, Sam was the golden boy. Everyone loved him.

Unbeknownst to Sam, someone has been listening to every word spoken between himself and his patients through the vent at his new office space 👀
.
One day, Sam goes to work and never returns home.... 👀

This book contains some clever writing- there are some “Wait... whaaaat?!!” moments. I had to stop and reread some pages to wrap my mind around it. There was definitely some heart pounding going on!

You definitely don’t want to miss this one! Put it on your list!
Newlyweds move to a new home in the husband's home town. This twisty tale of suspense kept me guessing right to the very end.
Thank you to Harper and Netgalley for the ARC of this title to read prior to public distribution on October 13.
Sam and Annie, newly married, decide to move back to his hometown so he can be close to his ailing mother. There he opens his counseling practice and attracted clients quickly. Unbeknownst to him, the conversations he has with this clients can be heard through a vent in an upstairs room.
I was merrily led down the garden path with this story thinking I knew exactly what was going on. Until I didn’t. And I said to myself, “Wait, what did I just read?” and then I would reread the passage and wonder how I could have missed the clues. But maybe there weren’t any.
Molloy knows how to capture her readers and give them a show they won’t soon forget. Then for a little more drama, she throws in some serious mystery as to the culprit's motivation.
This is my kind of thriller – never boring – surprises left and right – and a decent ending to boot.
If you are looking for a twisty suspense novel that will actually surprise you, look no further than Aimee Molloy's Goodnight Beautiful. Molloy, known for her previous book The Perfect Mother, manages to do what few authors can actually pull off in today's suspense genre - pull the wool over readers' eyes and let their assumptions take them where they may. Goodnight Beautiful's plot devices are clever and fresh, and when accompanied with Molloy's style of only giving readers enough information to let them THINK they know what's going on, it equates to a compelling tale spun in a deceiving little package. Goodnight Beautiful is a book best read blind, so if you are new to the novel, go ahead and read it first, and then come back to the reviews to see if everyone else was just as surprised as you.
Goodnight Beautiful's focus is a newlywed psychologist, Sam, who moves back to his small hometown with his beautiful, alluring wife, Annie, and sets up practice in a downstairs office only to have his private, confidential conversations with clients listened to through a ceiling vent. The new psychologist is the talk of the town among women, and his client list grows and grows, with all of his therapy sessions noted, remembered, and spied upon. But what happens when one client - the French Girl - gets too close for comfort? There's a storm roaring into town, Sam has gone missing, and Annie is on a desperate search to find her elusive husband.
Goodnight Beautiful is a fresh read that will have those in the literary community raving for months. The suspense style of this novel reminds me of Tarryn Fisher's The Wives, in which the author sets the reader up for one story and then pulls the rug out from underneath them about halfway through the book. This makes for a satisfying story, as admittedly, it is so hard to be truly surprised these days.
Goodnight Beautiful is recommended to anyone who has been waiting for something cunning and innovative to come out of the over-saturated suspense market. Additionally, while many such books are written for women after the Gone Girl phenomenon, Goodnight Beautiful is a twisty read that can be enjoyed by both women and men.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
You have to love an author who blasts books with unreliable narrators in a book with unreliable narrators. A psychologist and his new wife haved moved back to his home from the city. He rents space in an old home where Annie listens to his patients secretly through the air vents upstairs. He is keeping secrets and then goes missing during a storm and his wife is frantic. Then the book flips on a dime and becomes something much more sinister. A Stephen King book on steroids that plays mind games with you and you happily go along with it - brilliant. Fans of smart thriller with yes, unreliable narrators will enjoy this twisted tale. My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy.
Aimee Molloy delights and thrills again in this tense tale! I saw where another review described this as a "...a dark tale of desire, obsession, and deceit.." and I think that is a perfect synopsis of this wonderful story! A must read.
Imagine Misery, with a twist. Sam and Annie are a professional couple who move to upstate NY, ready to leave the rat race of the city and settle into suburban life. Sam is a successful therapist who spends his days counseling troubled clients. Annie soon becomes interested in his clients and their visits to his home office. It's not long before her interest crosses the line from curiosity to obsession. A discovery is made in their home, which can allow anyone in the home to listen to Sam's sessions with his clients. It does not take long before hours are spent listening to Sam console the troubled and weary. But who is doing the listening?
It all ends the day that Sam vanishes. After Sam disappears and police begin to investigate his life, questions arise. Could Annie have had something to do with his disappearance? Was Sam hiding something? Or, perhaps even more sinister.....was someone unknown stalking Sam?
This was a decent novel with some twists that I definitely did not see coming. While I would recommend to readers, I can't say that this novel captured my attention entirely. The first three-quarters were strong, and, for me, it fizzled as it came to a close. Put on your list, but don't race to the library for this one.
Twists upon twists. I had trouble putting this one down because the story always had you going down the wrong path and the twist would come and shock you. This came close to being a 5 star read for me, but the ending fell apart a little. For as twisty as the rest of the book was, the ending lost that dramatic reveal.
