Title: Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen Children's Stories): Jane Austen Children's Stories
Authors: Jane Austen (original author), Gemma Barder (adapted by)
Publisher: Sweet Cherry Publishing
ISBN: 9781782266136
Edition: E-Book
Publication date: 09/07/2020
Content:
"Mrs. Bennet is desperate to find rich husbands for her daughters, so the arrival of a charming new neighbour is welcome indeed. Sadly, the friend he brings with him is not. Mr. Darcy seems to have even more pride than money. Nobody likes him - least of all Elizabeth Bennet. But not everyone is who they seem. "
Opinion:
Firstly, I wanted to talk about the illustrations. They are so lovely that I immediatelly fell in love with them. The illustrations are perfectlyl fitting for a childrens book.
The text adaption for children is also totally nice and well done. I love "Pride and Prejudice" in general, so I really wanted to read the children's book too. I think that it is understandable for children, especially with the illustrations in the book.
Conclusion:
All in all, it is a very nice book for children, but also parents for reading it to their children or people who love Jane Austen and her stories. I would totally recommend it!
This was a delighful read. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book, so I can be a little bit nit-picky about it's adaptations. However, Gemma Barder did an excellent job turning the classic story of manners into a story children can enjoy.
The illustrations of the book, while cute and beautiful, were some times unrelated to the scene being read. There are also instances in which the story will describe a certain character as frowning and the drawing will have them smiling. It was a little bit confusing, but not something that completely affected my enjoyment of the book.
Overall, I think this is a great way to get children interested in classics and, hopefully, falling in love with Jane Austen's characters.
The cover and illustrations are absolutely lovely. Pride and Prejudice is a literary masterpiece, and this edition for children did its best to capture the story's essence. It's fast-paced and the number of characters may be overwhelming at first, but I'm sure the children will close the book with a satisfied smile on their faces, absolutely in love with the story and its sweet, happy ending.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read and review Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen Children’s Stories). A perfect introduction of a classic piece of literature for low level or young readers. The story was written in simple language with nice illustrations to support the text.
Perhaps there are some stories that don't adapt well to being written for a younger audience. The story was infantilized to the point of losing a lot of its essence. It states that it is a middle grade book, but it feels more suited for elementary. It can also use a large look over by a grammar editor.
This is absolutely wonderful. I wish I could give it ten stars! It is so true to the story, but makes it easy for a child to understand. It is a perfect introduction to a classic novel. Some adults would benefit from reading this first!
I thought of Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare as I read it.
There aren't enough words to express how valuable this is for teachers and parents who want their children to be introduced to and love classic literature.
I hope there are more like this coming and not only for Jane Austen's books, but also for other classic authors.
Title: Pride and Prejudice
Author: Jane Austen
Adapted by: Gemma Barder
Rating: 5 stars
This story is a classic. Following Lizzy Bennet and strong willed girl who by happenstance meets Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, and though at first they don’t see eye to eye their lives become intertwined, and they both realize how they were wrong about each other.
I squealed with this book it has all the interesting bits of the original but set to a level children can read. I think it was a very good adaptation. It kept the lines from the original work by Austen I believe that Barder did a very good job adapting the book into a children’s novel. I am ordering a copy for my daughter.

I loved this book!
I think that the decision to release some of the classics as children’s stories is brilliant. Even though it is shortened version of the full book I think it was an excellent tribute and it reminded me as an adult why I love the story so much.
The book covers all the main parts of the story and it is a very enjoyable and likable adaptation. You get to see the personalities of Elizabeth and Mr Darcy and I hope that this will introduce them to these fabulous characters and encourage them to read the full version, and/or watch come of the TV and film adaptations.
It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended and a great introduction to the world of Jane Austen – simply delightful!
This kiddie retelling of my favourite book is extremely short- 96 pages including tons of illustrations (there’s one at least on every page). The pace of narration is breathtakingly brisk- I felt like I was riding a bicycle with no brakes. You know, speeding along faster and faster to the inevitable crash. 😬 The beloved characters have been whittled down to bare bones, there is zero context setting, and electric situations fraught with chemistry are stripped of all emotion.
This lean and simplified narrative may work well for the target audience (7+), but to what end? Kids will finish the book, but will have completely missed the point. Without the context of society in the early 1800s, today’s kids will never understand why everyone is so hung up on getting married or why Lydia and Wickham leaving Brighton together is such a scandal or why Darcy says he wants to marry Lizzy “against his better judgment”. If the characters are reduced to cute caricatures with no explanation of their feelings or motivations, how will young readers empathise with them and love them? And so, yet another timeless classic will be relegated to the “weird old stuffy books” category.
The illustrations are fun, but borrow a bit too heavily from the 2005 film adaptation.
Recommended for 8-10 year olds ONLY IF a parent/teacher/caregiver reads it with them, explains the context and answers any questions.
5 stars
This was such a delight to read. I adore Pride and Prejudice since I was very little and I wanted to share this with my niece who's 5 and loving books and it was such a nice read to do with her. It took us 3 days to finish but she absolutely loved it and that's what I wanted when I asked for this ARC.
Thank you so much to the publisher and Netgalley for providing this ARC for an honest review.
Absolutely delightful! Pride and Prejudice is a classic among classics, and Gemma Barder has adapted this work beautifully. The story is familiar, and returning to Longbourn and Netherfield, the Bennets and famed Mr Darcy and sweet Mr Bingley and nefarious Mr Wickhan, is like drinking a comforting cup of tea. This is a wonderfully illustrated edition that I can imagine suits a mother-young daughter reading session perfectly. Barder might lose some of the witty repartees bursting in nearly all lines of Austen’s original dialogue, but she nevertheless captures a wonderful essence of Pride and Prejudice that is certain to excite hungry, young readers. I’d recommend this to parents for their early elementary school girls; it will be a perfect addition to their reading lists!
I love Jane Austen so I of course loved this book! An incredibly condensed version of Pride and Prejudice, this novel has sweet illustrations and gives the reader a good overview of Jane's most popular novel. If you have an older child, I wouldn't start them here. I think they could read Pride and Prejudice on their own. But this book is a nice start for younger kids and is a great gift for any Janeite!

Gemma Barder's adaptation of the beloved classic, Pride and Prejudice, is simply perfect!
The illustrations are adorable and beautiful, the story is explained well and easily, and still manages to showcase the characters' unique and loveable traits. Lizzy is ever the perfect heroine with her wit, boldness, loyalty, and charm. Darcy is of course so mysterious and unlikeable at first until you really get to know the true, soft, endearing and caring side of him. This book had me smiling from ear to ear, as I loved revisiting this classic, passionate and beautiful tale.
I believe this is a superb way to introduce children to classic literature, as the illustrations are beautiful, the story is told in a well paced manner, and one can easily fall under Austen's spell and see how pivotal her stories are, and forever will be.
This is an amazing children's version of Pride and Prejudice! It was lacking the iconic opening line but it was true to the story. I loved it!
Firstly I would like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that I will always enjoy a "Pride and Prejudice" adaptation. Oh let's be honest, any Jane Austen adaptation.
And this adaptation does not shine away from that truth. It is very comprehensible, simple, and enjoyable for, I would guess, kids from age 6+.
It manages to maintain that charm that all Jane Austen's books have. And if in the future, I have any children of my own, I will most definitely read this adaptation, you know, to get them into the Jane Austen fan club.
Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book and this adapted children’s story by Gemma Barder was delightful to read. At 96 pages, it’s a quick read that hits all of the major plot points while using modern language that will be easier for young readers to understand. There are also charming drawings throughout. I definitely recommend this book for middle grade readers and Jane Austen fans who want to introduce Austen to the next generation. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for the ebook to review. All opinions are my own.
It was wonderful to see how this story has been adapted for the little ones! It was easy to follow and very engaging, I really loved it.
I think this serves as a good book for children to become aware of classics and to hopefully ignite their interest in reading the full story in the future once they're older. As it's for children/young readers, the storyline has obviously been very simplified but it has been adapted well and includes all the key plot elements of the original. I appreciated that some of the more famous quotes from the original are also kept in. That said, I do feel that because the transition scenes from the original were mostly missing, it made this very simplistic version seem choppy and slightly disconnected. There's also no clear indication of time (i.e. when events happened during day or night etc.) and I found that a bit weird.
I thought the illustrations were cute in general and gave a nice picture about what the characters looked like, but I have to admit that some of the facial features (i.e. the eyes) were a little weird and made the characters look funny. I also don't think they really added much to enhance the storyline but I guess for young children, it's okay?
All in all, a pretty good adaptation of my all time favourite classic for very young readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for granting me access to an e-ARC of “Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen Children's Stories),” a Jane Austen novel adapted by Gemma Barder in exchange for an honest review.
This is such a good book for children! The story is simplified enough that's not missing important dialogues from the original book, the cover has the lovliest color palette and the drawing in between the pages are so cute.
It's a quick and fun read to beginner readers.
As a great aficionado of Miss Austen's work, I was interested to read and review this adaptation by Gemma Barder, aimed at readers in the pre-teen age group.
As would be expected, given the format, many nuances within the plot, characters and dialogue of the original are necessarily dispensed with. However, I was impressed with the Barder's efforts to include a fair amount of the original novel's dialogue, including many of the well-known pieces of dialogue. She captures the overall plot effectively, together with the character foibles of the major characters. The whimsical illustrations work well with the text to reinforce the early 19th century feel and the emotions the characters are feeling in particular scenes.
My own 10-year-old daughter is currently reading this edition and enjoying it thoroughly.
This is an excellent introduction to a literary classic, made accessible to younger readers. Highly recommended.
My thanks to the author, Sweet Cherry Publishing and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of this title. #PrideandPrejudice #NetGalley
