This is a very short version of Pride and Prejudice that would probably be suitable for those under 10. As an introduction to Jane Austen's most famous work, it succeeds wonderfully. It abbreviates the story but retains some of the humor and vocabulary of the original. Although it has to summarize a lot, it slows down as needed to add detail to the important moments. Young readers could use this book as a bridge to watching one of the adaptations, or to reading the original when they feel ready.
There are also really charming illustrations in this version!
My 9 year old daughter really enjoyed this, the story has been adapted perfectly for the younger audience. It held my daughters attention well, and as a short book she finished it quickly. I will be purchasing more from this adaptation series.
This is a fun children's book with adorable illustrations and is also fit for adults who want to know what pride and prejudice was about but are too lazy to read the whole story.
The book itself is super short and precise to the point of giving you exact information that you'll need and not much more. This could be great to read with your children to let them dip their toes into a favourite classic of many people.
***I got this as an arc from Net Galley for an honest review.
This was a very quick read, which is great for young readers and a great introduction to Jane Austen. However, I struggled connecting with the characters, which made it hard to follow the storyline.
I read this with my daughters, it was a lovely way to introduce them to the classics and I know they both really enjoyed it and my 9 year old read it again herself.
It was lovely to get their take on it, it was fresh and engaging.
Thank you Sweet Cherry Publishing and NetGalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review. My review is my own and not influenced by others.
This retelling of Jane Austen is short, but sweet. It contains everything you need to know about the Pride and Prejudice classic, perfect for children. The drawings gave a sweet addition to the book.

At this point, my love for Jane Austen is well-known. I will read any retelling there is. I have reviewed a ton of them already, including two of my favorites: Pride by Ibi Zoboi and Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev.
But while those are YA and adult romance, respectively, this is a children's book! And it's utterly delightful! Alright, let get to the review!
As the synopsis pretty much sums up the story and this book is old enough that quite a few people know at least some part of it, I'm not going to do a whole explanation of the story. Let's just talk how cute this shit is!
It's super cute! The illustrations are in black and white and really well-done. Darcy looks like the 2005-version of Darcy, but other than that, most of the characters are completely original in how they're drawn. All the Bennet women, including Mrs. Bennet, look gorgeous and I really appreciate Mary not being portrayed as a dull spinster.
ALSO:
Darcy and Lizzie's angry faces are perfection!
No lie: Wickham looks like a blockhead hahahahahaha. I died.
Mr. Collins is way too good-looking for his character, but I get it. It's for kids. Let's not scare them with a depiction of a greasy creeper.
Not every scene has a picture, but both the Darcy letter and both notes sent during the Lydia debacle are written out which I LOVE. The Darcy letter is one of the most important parts of the story so I'm glad the author gave it it's own illustration.
The story is simplified as the original might be too much for younger kids (some of the language in the original is confusing to me), but that doesn't take away from the story at all.
This version does give Bingley only one sister, but this isn't the first adaptation to do that. And lord knows Caroline Bingley does not need an ally to be an awful human.
Other than that, I don't think there are many changes. I really liked that they kept in the part about Georgiana and Wickham as well why Lydia running away was so bad. It's just done in a way that's appropriate for kids.
The Easy Classics edition of Pride and Prejudice is great for kids (it says 7-9 years old), but it's good for any Austen enthusiast/addict too. It also doesn't hurt that the cover is ridiculously pretty. Bookstagram people! Do what you do best!
I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars.
Easy Classics' Pride and Prejudice by Gemma Barder and Jane Austen comes out September 29, 2020
(this is according to Amazon, but Goodreads (Feb. 2021) and NetGalley (Jul. 2020) have two different dates so *shrugs*)
Thank you to NetGalley and Sweet Cherry Publishing for the free eARC in exchange for my honest review.
My kids have lately been questioning my favourite authors and I've told them plenty about Jane Austen so this book was right up our alley. This illustrations are sweet and whimsical, the story is light enough for my children to easily understand, and it was well adapted overall (in a very simplistic way, of course). Loved it and can't wait to read them the true classic later on.
I have been waiting for years for the right time to share Jane Austen with my daughter, and this wonderful book has provided me with that opportunity much earlier than I anticipated! The author has cleverly condensed all of the pertinent plot points of the well-known story of Pride and Prejudice into a thoroughly readable and digestible story for children. The pacing and language were spot on for my daughter, and I will certainly be looking out for more titles from the “Jane Austen Children's Stories” series.
My one very slight gripe is that the author seems to have used the 2005 movie as her source material, rather than the original Jane Austen text. Some of the dialogue is taken straight from the film, and the illustrations (charming as they are) bear more than a passing resemblance to Kiera Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen and co. This, however, in no way impeded my daughter’s enjoyment of the tale, so is perhaps not as important to non-purists!
My thanks to the author, NetGalley, and the publisher for the arc to review.
Love the cover and the pictures inside. Great depiction of Elizabeth. A good book to get a child to read one of Jane Austen's greatest novel. It is modified (shortened) enough so that the main points are in the story and it will the child engaged.
The only thing I wish to change is the placement of some pictures (Since two pictures will not fit in one page, they could just show a picture and the narrative/description). So itwon't be confusing to the child who might also be following the picture and connecting it with the story/character.
I recieved a free copy of this book and voluntarily leaving a review.
An adaptation of the Austen classic meant for younger readers. The text is very readable and approachable for those who might be familiar with the story and find this version easier to grasp. The pace of the story was quick and most all of the main plot points were included making it a good condensed version.
Cute retelling of this classic love story. If you're a Jane Austen fan and want to pass the stories on to your kids, this would be a great place to start.
These books never disappoint. I love anything Jane Austen and I'm glad I can teach my children early on about her. Would definitely recommend!
This book was great! It was so easy to lose yourself in the story, and kept you turning pages to see what happened next! Will definitely be recommending!
I was so excited to get this ARC!
This book would be perfect for any Austen beginner. It was the same plot as Pride and Prejudice but an abridged version. I know Austen fans live to share their love of the stories and characters and if I had a daughter or a young friend in elementary school this would be the perfect gift. The vocabulary isn't changed very much so it still reads like a true Austen novel. This book also gives what is implied. I think everyone should read Pride and Prejudice, but some of the nuances might be hard to pick up by a younger reader so this helps out. This book comes out later this year and would be the perfect Christmas gift for a young reader!
As a teacher of students with reading disabilities, I was excited to find this adapted version of the classic. I can see students enjoying the story written on a level that they can read themselves. The content is more advanced than the reading level, so it would be for middle to high school students. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this adaptation.

“A lady's imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.”
This absolutely 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 children’s adaptation of 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦 & 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘦 by Gemma Barder is such a fun read for fans of the classic novel, and maybe a nice introduction for those who are intimidated by the classics! Who knew 𝘗&𝘗 could be condensed into a 15 minute read and still convey all of the important elements?
Even on my 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞, the illustrations come off beautifully! The 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 are as gorgeous as ever!
Thank you so much to @netgalley and @sweetcherrypublishing for my free digital copy in exchange for an honest review! Be sure to snag this one along with the other Austen classics on pub day, coming July 2020!

Gemma Barder’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was fantastic. Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favorite novel: I have read Pride and Prejudice so many times I have lost count. I always look forward to new adaptations and editions of this book, and this one was no exception! I loved it. I have so many different editions of Pride and Prejudice but this is one of my new favorites! I thought that the illustrations were very cute and would add helpful visualizations for younger readers. Pride and Prejudice is a very long book and this was a great condensed version: all of the major plot points were hit, making this a really accurate adaptation. Overall this is a wonderful version of a classic that anyone could enjoy!
