"Who Wants to Marry a Duke" by Sabrina Jeffries is a delightful dive into regency romance that earned its solid four stars in my book. The enemies to lovers plotline adds a delicious tension to the narrative, keeping me hooked from start to finish. Jeffries weaves a compelling tale around a savvy heroine and a reformed rake, their dynamic injecting freshness into the regency genre. While the plot could have delved even deeper into certain aspects, the overall execution is lovely, making this a highly enjoyable addition to the Duke Dynasty series.
I’ve come to the realization that this book was simply not for me. I still would love to thank the publisher for allowing me the chance to read this.
A book meant to be read anywhere. Beach, Mountains, Lakes, and Home. Olivia and Grey were 2 characters who brought the story to life and their mystery leads them on a merry chase and in the midst of it all they fall in love woth each other.
Olivia and Marlowe's story in Who Wants to Marry a Duke, by Sabrina Jeffries is a delightfully suspenseful and romantically inspiring! I enjoyed reading another book from Sabrina Jeffries and I absolutely recommend this to all readers and lovers of the romance genre!
I tried really hard to get into this book and it's completely possible it was just my mindset at the time. I can see myself enjoying Who Wants to Marry a Duke at a later date but right now, it just wasn't for me.
Sabrina Jeffries is one of my favorite romance authors and I really liked Olivia and pretty much all of the side characters. Unfortunately, I really really really disliked Thorn to the point it clouded my enjoyment of the book. Olivia is intelligent, practical, and comes off as a nice straightforward woman. Thorn is convinced that the kiss (that he initiated with no encouragement from her) was all part of a blackmail/forced marriage scheme that she and her stepmother cooked up. Even though Thorn's nearest and dearest point out that since she turned down his marriage proposal that hardly seems very likely he is insistent and becomes dismissive and demeaning of Olivia's accomplishments and intelligence. I wanted to hit him if you can't tell. Because Sabrina Jeffries is a fantastic romance writer the book is incredibly readable and I enjoyed any scene that didn't involve Thorn. While he does redeem himself somewhat by the end I can't help but think that Olivia deserved better. I will always recommend Sabrina Jeffries if you want to read historical romances but this isn't the book I would recommend.
I don't usually read regency novels or historical fiction romance, but this one was really good! Sabrina Jeffries is one of my favorites and she always knows how to spin a great story that completely keeps my attention.
Sabrina is one of my favorite authors! She write amazing characters. I love this series. I can't wait for the next book.
I received an ARC of this novel from Kensington Books via Netgalley in exchange for my review. For all the Bridgerton fans out there, anything by Sabrina Jeffries should be at the top of your to-be-read stack! I loved this quirky, unique story about Olivia Norley-a budding scientist who has been hired by Marlowe Drake, the Duke of Thornstock's half-brother to use her chemistry skills to help get to the bottom of a family mystery. Due to a past kiss with Olivia, which sparked a bit of a scandal, Marlowe (aka Thorn) is not going to let Olivia out of his sight.
I loved the way Sabrina Jeffries put her main character in a position to use her brains along with her beauty-not to catch a man, but because she was passionate about science!! A breath of fresh air for this genre. I loved this story!!
Anything Sabrina Jefferies writes is amazing! Her books always make you wanting more. Her stories are so engaging and her characters are so in depth. Just love her books!
Thanks to netgalley for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
3.5 Stars it was... I don’t know. I enjoyed that Olivia Norley was a chemist, it was a profession I had not read about before, for women who have no career it was a cool choice.
I wasn’t sure about the Duke, they are always rakes and it felt like a standard HR character - except for being a playwright.
There was a little murder mystery on it and it was left unresolved, next book maybe? I haven’t read the others in this series so not sure how closely they are linked. Don’t think I’ll continue with the series though.
Enjoyed this one. Found the heroine delightful, and the hero... Well, I wanted him to get his comeuppance for being so single-minded and 'woe is me', but all in all, Olivia does somewhat set him to rights.
It dragged a bit in the middle (sometimes even a lot, considering the epilogue can sum it all up for the reader pretty well), but the banter was good and Olivia was a refreshing heroine.
What this one really did, though, was make me want to read the next book, because there's a mystery across the series and it shaped up nicely in this one
My favorite romance trope is when characters were childhood friends or neighbors. My second favorite is enemies to lovers. Who Wants to Marry a Duke combines both into on smart and entertaining story. Thorn is your average rake who has a grudge against Olivia, the consummate bluestocking hired by his brother to investigate the poisoning of their late father. I’m not always a fan of how regency romance authors portray these Uber-intelligent women because they are often too one-dimensional. Sabrina Jeffries doesn’t have that problem in this installment of her Duke Dynasty series.
Olivia is unpracticed in romance, but she does not come across as naive because of it or totally lose her head because Thorn shows her interest. She is a take charge women who cares more about her own self-interest and thinks for herself. I love that about her. Thorn, on the other hand, is pretty juvenile throughout. His best self is definitely reserved for the bedroom, which makes the love scenes explosive, something, I’m sure a chemist appreciates. All in all, I think Olivia could have done better, but, maybe, the scientist in her appreciates the predictability her relationship with Thorn brings, and that is logic I can appreciate.
I was given a ARC of this title via Net Galley in exchange for my review.
A really good book though it was slow paced in my opinion. Still very interesting and well executed though!! Overall, solid 3.5 star read. Though I did get bored during reading it during some points.
RATING: 4 STARS
2020; Zebra/Kensington Books
Who Wants to Marry a Duke? is a romance about second chances. When you are burned in love once, do you really want to trust that person again? Thorn, who is trying to help his brothers and sister figure out a family mystery, finds himself meeting the pretty bookish Olivia again. His older brother hired Olivia for her scientific expertise. Both are uncomfortable being together due to the sparks going on between them, but they can't stand to be apart either. Both will need to trust one another, but can they put the past behind them. I will start off by saying there is another book in the series, as the mystery is still left hanging. I am really enjoying this series and the characters. You see past characters popping up in all the books, so I totally recommend reading this one in order. Also, because each book adds to the mystery.
***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook/audiobook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***
I really enjoyed Olivia's character in the book and loved that she had a profession rather than marrying right away. I also loved the elements of mystery. Thorn wasn't my favorite character I guess you could say I had a love/hate thing going on with him. Some scenes I really liked him, others I really did not.
I definitely plan to read the next book in the series to see how the mystery is solved.

I really liked the heroine of this book very much, socially anxious and logical Lady Olivia Notley is uninterested in marriage, and keen to become a professional and published chemist instead. Blessed with a loving yet keen to see her married off stepmother, and a mainly absent and uninterested father Olivia has assisted her uncle with his chemistryall her life. Unsure of people’s motivations and behaviour in society, Olivia is content to watch from the sidelines and concentrate on her chemistry.
When Thorn, Duke of Thornstock, finally arrives in London’s ballrooms, he is also unsure of himself, and convinced people are judging him for his youth, inexperience and German mannerisms. Despite taking his half brother Grey’s strictures to beware of husband hunting mamas and daughters seeking to entrap him, he manages to compromise Lady Olivia, by kissing her. Forced into proposing, all though not realising he is being coerced, Olivia refuses him, as she realises he is not proposing because he has any warm feelings towards her. Thorn is unfairly and irrationally still certain that Lady Olivia was in cahoots with Lady Notley to entrap him.
Nine years later, Thorn is the secret author of a number of satirical plays featuring a grasping Mama and her deceitful daughter Lady Slyboots, based on his perception of Lady Notley and Olivia. He is also tormented by the information Lady Notley tried to use to insist on his proposal. This has made him certain he never wants to be vulnerable to love. Increasingly bothered by his secret life, he crosses paths with Lady Olivia again, as she has been invited to help with Lord Greys exhumation of his father’s remains, to test them for arsenic poisoning. Suspicious of her motives, yet also strongly attracted to her, Thorn insists he also comes along, and when Olivia is targeted by someone, and could have lost her life, Thorn becomes determined to protect her. As they grow closer Thorn slowly comes to realise that he wants to marry her, but how can he confess that he is really the author of her favourite plays,
This was a fun romp, but Thorn as a character was a real piece of work, he compromised Olivia, and then blames her for it, he then is highly offended when he is refused, even though he didn’t want to marry her at first. He keeps secrets from Olivia, refuses to face up to his unfairness and double standards, and yet won’t confess, even to himself, how he feels. He keeps secrets from his mother and his siblings, and then is irritated by his family.
I did enjoy the story, but I found Thorn a bit of an idiot.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
My favorite in the series so far!!!
Olivia and Thorn were amazing together. I loved their chemistry from the beginning.
Olivia was my type of heroine. She was spunky and smart, stood her ground when around Thorn, but she also knew when to compromise. While Thorn's behavior was extremely aggravating at times throughout the story. I could feel his character growth and loved how Olivia made him a better man.
I am very excited to read the next book in this series, but also sad to see it end.
Who Wants to Marry a Duke by Sabrina Jeffries
Nine years before Miss Norley and the duke of Thornstock were caught in a compromising position when both refused to marry as Miss Norley wanted to be a scientist. Now the dukes half brother asks Miss Norley to investigate if their father was murdered and Thorn decides to tag along to avoid any fowl play.
Really well written story with intriguing twists and secrets abound. Much enjoyed.
I've loved the previous books in this series but I think this one is my favorite.
I really liked Olivia's character and the enemies-to-lovers trope.
