A good debut novel.
The first few chapters were hard to get into. It improved later in the book
The characters were well developed.
A good read.
This was a fabulous book. It was funny and had wonderful pacing. I would read this author again. I would recommend this book to others.
Heartwarming and full of warmth and girl power!
This is my first book by this author and it certainly won't be the last, I am very selective when it comes to sagas, and though I am starting to read more there are times when I feel that some stories seem to go on and on for what feels like forever, so I was pleasantly surprised by just how quick paced this one was. I loved the story; it flowed easily from one scene to the next, and the characters were real, relatable, and instantly likeable.
Definitely one for the re-reading shelf!
I enjoyed this look at life on the home front during WWII. The characters are well developed, and the setting of Cornwall was interesting.
I have all but exhausted the genre for wartime fiction but there are still a few I enjoy, preferring those that war is simply a backdrop to a saga of stories. But WARTIME WITH THE CORNISH GIRLS is also a little different and I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did, since the market is flooded with similar tales. But then, I'm always a sucker for Cornwall.
The story begins in London during the Blitz with Violet and her two nieces, Lily and Alice, fleeing the capital for the confines of sleepy Cornwall in the hope of escaping the nightly raids and keeping safe. However, their idyllic dreams of sunswept sands and paddling in the crisp blue waters is shortlived upon arrival. They have taken refuge with Violet's mother's sister and her husband, but Margaret is a manipulative tyrant and her husband a lech and after a shocking confrontation, Violet and the girls flee the farm and yet have nowhere to go.
High-spirited Eva is a chorus girl in London and has caught the eye of American flight lieutenant Max. Until one night a raid sees them seeking shelter nearby, killing many with Max pushing Eva to safety with no thought to for his own. After recovering from near death, Eva is summoned to Cornwall by her father where he heads up a top secret mission on its sleepy coasts.
Hazel is born and bred Cornish who, as a teenager, was in love with one boy but fell pregnant to another and thus marrying said father, Bertie Baxter, who ended up being an abusive tyrant with far too much love of alcohol than for his wife and son. But now Bertie is off serving King and country leaving Hazel to keep the home fires burning and their 15 year old son Charlie with a who has a wanderlust to follow in his father's footsteps.
After a chance meeting outside her aunt's farm, Violet seeks out Hazel (the only other person she knows in Cornwall) in the hope of garnishing jobs for the three of them at Eastern House where Hazel works as a domestic. There they meet Eva who finds life in Porthcurno somewhat sedate and boring after the excitement of London. They become friends and are soon planning a dance to keep spirits up while maintaining a level of fun and excitement amidst the doom of war that overshadows them.
But they soon discover that nowhere in England is safe during the war, not even sleepy Cornwall. And when a nasty surprise turns up threatening to spread rumours about her family amidst her superiors at Eastern House, Violet fears her time in Cornwall and the friendships she has found may be coming to an end. Meanwhile, Eva develops starry eyes for Professor Templeton but feels sure he is keeping secrets. While Hazel harbours her own secret that is bound to change her life, but not as much as the news she receives shortly after.
How will things turn out for these three women?
I liked Violet and her sparky nieces, Lily and Alice. After her sister is killed in the Blitz she decides to take her nieces to Cornwall to keep them safe but has no idea what lay in store for her there. Hazel had my sympathies with a brute of a husband and a moody teenage son who tries to stake his place as the man of the house in his father's absence. But her life shows promise by the end and I look forward to seeing what happens for her. The only thing I liked about Eva was her name. The woman did what she want without a care or thought for anyone else.
I really enjoyed WARTIME WITH THE CORNISH GIRLS which had the right balance of war and life on the home front for me. I enjoy saga stories and following the lives of favourite characters without being bogged down by technical or historical facts. And of course, I love just about everything set in Cornwall.
I don't know where the stories will go from here but I look forward to catching up with the girls in future installments...all of which I have waiting on my kindle.
Perfect for fans of Lizzie Lane, Rosie Clarke, Pam Howes and Nancy Revell.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. What a great read! The cover is super cute. I highly recommend.
This has been in my to be read pile for such a long time and I’m sorry I didn’t read it soon. The lives of three women were woven together her so beautifully, bringing them to the same place for their story to be told as friends. I can see the next book has already been released so will be buying and reading it next as well as any others from this author.
Beautifully written! I wish I would've known this was a series though! The story drew me in from the first page and held my attention to the last. It made me both laugh out loud and hold my breath waiting to see what would happen. Would definitely recommend!
This was a brilliant read and is being featured on my blog for my quick star reviews feature, which I have created on my blog so I can catch up with all the books I have read and therefore review.

This is a great debut, I really enjoyed that we met the characters in two different settings, from London where we meet Violet and Eva, then down to Cornwall, to be introduced to Hazel.
The relationships that interweave are endearing, especially the bond between Violet and her nieces.
I am reading this as part of #netgalleynovember and I know the second in the series is out on the 25th November, I’m looking forward to getting back to the girls to see what happens next.
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for this review copy

A lovely start to what I expect will be a fantastic series. Loved the characters and the storyline. I'm new to the author but she will definitely be going on my to-read list!
Received complimentary e-copy for honest review.
Was swept deep in to the story right from the beginning. Movie potential. Characters which become real, and a writing style which develops setting and atmosphere. Enjoyed every page.
Well written story with not so perfect characters set in England in world war two. Our ladies are struggling to get by and having to cope with nasty husbands, evil uncles, unfair rumours and treacherous colleagues. But together with a few good guys and the support of each other, they battle their way through, against the backdrop of a secret location in Cornwall that is doing important war work
I was very excited to read Wartime with the Cornish Girls, (Avon) by Betty Walker, as I have a long history of loving WWII era novels. This novel follows Violet as she flees the city to the country side of Cornwall with her two nieces. There she meets Eva and Hazel. The novel really takes turns telling all three women's' stories and eventually they interlock. They come together to fight the war in their own way.
To be really honest I rated this 2 stars. There wasn't anything inherently wrong with it, I just found it quite boring. It appears that this is the first of a series that I won't be continuing.
A copy of this book was provided to me for review by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
It is 1941, war is raging & cities are being bombed almost constantly. Eva was used to enjoying life, the dances & the parties. When she is very nearly killed in a blast & it is only because of a young man she survived she decides to go down to Cornwall where her father is in command of a top secret base. Violet decides she needs to get out of London & take her two nieces with her. They have an aunt in Cornwall so they are also off to the South West. Hazel lives in Porthcurno with her teenage son, Charlie. Her abusive husband is in the army & in many ways life is better nowadays. The lives of these women & their friendship made for a good read. The characters were endearing(well mostly!) & all in all it was an enjoyable way to spend some time. I'm glad there is another book to come as I want to know what happens next! Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
These are some of my favorite kind of books - lovely writing - historical fiction - strong women / world war 2. Lots of plot that I won’t spoil but know that it reads quickly and is both interesting and charming and inspiring. You can’t go wrong! Grateful for the book and so glad to have read it.
Another story about women and friendship in wartime Britain. The Cornish setting adds charm. Making do with rations, gender stereotypes, abusive husbands and raising a child orphaned by the Blitz provides the plot for a story that champions the strength of women in WWII; one of the few positives to come out of that horrific war. In spite of the topic, like many of this genre, an easy and basically uplifting story (or fantasy!)
A charming and exciting story, Wartime with the Cornish Girls, is a perfectly relaxing read. As WWII presses on, friendships grow and romance blooms for three young women who find themselves in a small English town. Working at a top secret location, their friendship bonds and helps them get through the fear and uncertainty of war.
This book had me hooked quickly after picking it up, and I can’t wait for the next book in the series! If you love the WWII era, romance and the strength of friendship, then do yourself a favor and read this book. (I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review.)
Wartime with the Cornish Girls is the first book in The Cornish Girls series by Betty Walker.
Set during World War 2 it mostly takes place in Cornwall, a nice change from the stories mainly set in London.
The main characters have detailed backgrounds and the friendships they form are strong. VIOLET has had to move to Cornwall with her younger nieces to get them away from the dangers of London. EVA is a headstrong young woman, a dancer in London who is forced to move to Cornwall for safety and to recover from nearly dying in a bomb blast there. Finally, HAZEL, a mother who is an abused wife who is trying to make ends meet while her husband is away fighting.
Eva's father is head of a top-secret military base in Cornwall. The place plays a key part in the story in which the three women are connected. Friendships are built amongst the danger of being part of a base that the enemy is trying to find and bomb. A danger that is made all the more real thanks to a spy amongst them. I will say no more, I don't want to give spoilers.
This book was the perfect mix of light and dark moments where one minute I would want to cry and the next I would be uplifted by the friendships of the women, how they were there for each other and how they dealt with their lives in Cornwall.
There wasn't a dull moment in the book at all and I am very much looking forward to the next books in the series if they are going to be as good as this one!
