I am a Capybara is in that grey space between fiction and nonfiction. This is a story of a capybara but also gives amazing information on capybaras as well. I would love to use this for preschool storytime to introduce a cool new animal!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Princeton Architectural Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's book. This is a cute, fun book and I am sure many American children don't know what a Capybara is!! Just a fun book! 4 stars
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a cute story that combines fiction with facts and gives a storyline and information about an obscure animal.
I'm going to be honest, I wasn't convinced by this. I thought it was long and rambling and a little boring. But I sat and read it with my 5 year old and he ADORED it. It completely captivated him and he snuggled right in and giggled throughout. He told me he loved the drawings and all of it, so it's a big thumbs up from us!
I'm not sure what to say about this book. I really loved the illustrations and the characters of the capybaras. I'm not sure if it's because it's an ebook and will therefore format better on a page or if it hasn't translated brilliantly but the text just all felt a little odd. There seemed to be lots of grammar and punctuation errors and the text didn't really flow. The illustrations really had such character and I will definitely check this book out in 'real life' once published as I hope the above issues won't apply.
I don’t know what I thought would be in the book titled ‘I am a Capybara’ but this was potentially the most random book I’ve ever read.
This was really sweet.
I love capybaras! I really enjoy watching videos of capybaras doing absolutely nothing yet still seeming like they're enjoying every moment of it, and I felt the capybaras in this book were doing the exact same thing! When explaining their life to the reader and with the lazy yet lovely drawings, I felt they were at peace.
The only thing that didn't do it for me is the opera and poetry thing. I love reading children's books about animals that like arts, or sports, or cooking, and we get to know them through that or they tell us a story using that as an excuse, but in this case, because the book is full of real facts about capybaras, felt kinda off. But still-- lovely!
Ps: my favorite one is the capybara with a bow tie.
I liked this!

I think this book is very cute. It's a capybara wikipedia page for children so to say, nothing weong with that though! I think it's rather charming!
The book is about a capybara telling a story about himself and his own existence. How Capybaras look, why they may seem angry and that they perhaps have a good sense of humor.
I thought this book was pretty cute. I requested it and was happy to find out that I was accepted. I loved the art and in general I think this book has lots of potential for in the future 🤎
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is a beautiful and simple book about a Capybara and their nature in the wild. I didn't know anything about Capybaras so I really enjoyed this book and think many children will enjoy reading and learning about this rodent type animal much like a dog in looks but of which we never really hear about.
This was an interesting title, one that I'll admit to being excited by largely for its subject. I am a big capybara fan. My wife is an even bigger capybara fan. However, having read the book itself, I was more impressed with the illustrations than with the text. Maybe it was the translation or maybe it was the manner in which the original text was written, but it felt like a lot of the intended humor and charm was lost in the clunkiness of the phrasing. I still enjoyed it, but the flow of the text was encumbered by excessive wordiness. It wasn't a bad book, just one that I suppose lost something in translation.
This was a sweet book, but confused me a little. It started out teaching facts about capybaras as an animal, but then it turned imaginary and had the capybara doing things like enjoying opera. I found it jarring and could imagine it confusing young readers. Or maybe they wouldn't care and I'm just old, who knows. I just know I wouldn't enjoy explaining the difference to my 3-year-old and the made-up stuff makes me question the facts presented earlier.
Which is a shame, because besides that I love this book. The art is *beautiful* and I love it. The animals look like themselves, not cutesy versions of themselves! I just wish it would have picked a genre. Or more clearly delineated in the story, "and now here's something about me" after talking about general capybara facts.
Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world, they’re often mistaken for dogs, and they love water, but did you know that they also have an appreciation for opera and poetry? I am a Capybara teaches readers some simple facts about Capybaras with a humorous tone narrated by none other than the capybara himself.
At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about the ‘fact mixed with fiction’ story, but it kept the book comical and interesting. The illustrations are somewhat simple and look to be hand-sketched which inspired my young reader to sit down with a pencil and paper and attempt to draw him.
There are little messages here about the importance of acceptance, family, community, and caring for others. The only thing I would’ve loved is the addition of a fact section at the end for those interested in learning more, because this is an animal we personally didn’t know very much about. Overall, we enjoyed it.

A super simple and easy read all about the capybara. It was cute because it was told as if it was written from the animals perspective. I liked that the book teaches simple facts about this animal.
The illustrations were beautiful and well drawn. Unfortunately the book was a little flat and not as enticing as some children's book. But that aside I think the book could be beneficial in the classroom setting when teaching about different animals because it provides facts without being overbearing.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The illustrations are adorable in this book. The writing, however, veered between imaginative anthropomorphism to random facts about capybaras. The title fails as both a nonfiction title and a storybook. Too bad, because parts of it are enjoyable.
I am a Capybara is a well written children's book that explores the life of a capybara. The book is shared from the point of view of the capybara, and it would be a great addition to a classroom library for that unit of study.
I absolutely love this book. This book is about a capybara that is explaining what exactly capybara is and what they do but it's written in a way that children can understand and relate to being a capybara which is amazing. There was a line in there talking about how tough guys can be cuddly.I think that is a wonderful message that you can be tough and sensitive at the same time especially for those little boys out there who think that they're weird when they have emotions.I definitely will be buying this book because my future children need to read it and of course you can't beat a capybara.

I love capybaras and think they're underrated animals. I'm glad this book was so sweet and introspective.
