perfect cookbook to introduce your little one to cooking. Recipes can be made by adults and children of various ages, some recipes could be made by older children with little adult supervision. Illustrations are fun addition.
Simple and amazing recipes to enjoy making with little ones. I believe we should involve children in kitchen at young age to give them the concept of healthy food.
This book is an interesting resource for all.
This was a great book to use to cook with my toddler. He enjoyed the pictures and eating. He wasn’t a fan of cleaning up.
This book was received as an ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids - Sourcebooks Explore in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I could not find this book more adorable! This is such an enjoyable book full of fin kid friendly recipes that are easy to follow thanks to the colorful layout displayed throughout the book. I can't wait to try this cookbook with my niece and nephews and then if it is this much fun, potentially have it as a candidate for a special edition for our cooking demo. I can't wait to try the pepperoni pizza and the mac and cheese and then watch my favorite part, seeing the reactions on the children's faces.
We will consider adding this title to our TX JNon-Fiction collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
My Very First Cookbook is a fun introduction for the earliest of cooks. The recipes are simple to make and have easy steps for beginner readers to follow. I also loved some of the fun tips for creating cooking traditions together, such as wearing matching aprons, etc.
With 48 different recipes ranging from Toads in the Hole Toast to Key Lime Pie Milkshakes, this book covers breakfast to dessert and everything in between. Each page also contains useful substitution tips for swapping out ingredients or flavours. At the back of the book, you'll also find a page full of funny, food jokes (I wish these were on each page!) and a few fill-in-the-blank pages for your kids to create their own recipes.
My kids and I just finished making a batch of the Best Ever Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins and while they may be the only buttermilk blueberry muffins I've ever had, I can attest to the fact that they are delicious! I'm looking forward to working our way through the rest of these simple but yummy-looking recipes!
This is a nice cookbook aimed at young children. The art work is brightly colored and cheerful and many of the recipes have hints from a porcupine parent and child who are cooking together. There is a nice assortment of kid friendly recipes and good advice about hand washing before almost every recipe. There aren't a lot of cookbooks aimed at younger children, so this would be a good addition to any young children's section. But I wondered why there weren't any photographs of the food as are common in most cookbooks.
Cute illustrated cookbook for kids. The back cover says the book is for ages 4 and up. Rather than photographs, adorable illustrations of animal parent and kid pairs that are cooking accompany the recipes, along with illustrations of ingredients and sometimes completed dishes. The recipes are all very kid-friendly, separated into chapters on breakfast, lunch, snack, beverage, dinner, sides, and desserts. The recipe pages include some food-theme jokes, and there are a few additional pages of jokes at the end. Each recipe also has additional hints, tips, or substitution suggestions. The book is very colorful and fun, and I think it would really appeal to little kids as a first book, although some of them may not enjoy the illustrations as much as they would photos.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
"My Very First Cookbook" is the perfect kitchen companion for a young budding chef! The author Danielle Kartes does an excellent job of curating a perfect combination of easy recipes and adorable eye catching illustrations that are sure to draw in young readers interested in culinary adventures. The book is written with adult assistance in mind, but is formatted well for older children. If you have younger readers, this is a book that require a little more hands on participation from an adult but it is so worth it! Kartes does an amazing job of providing recipes that kids will love and shares variations for those recipes as well allowing for young chefs to flex their cooking skills while giving them choices. The freedom and confidence that will come with this book is probably my favorite part! Our family loved the Blueberry Muffins and the overnight oats the best! Our young ones were excited about the overnight oats because they got to choose what went in it and didn't need as much help in terms of preparation. "My Very First Cookbook" was a delicious treat of a book that our whole family loved!
What a delightful book. What a great gift this would be to give. It is a celebration of things cherished in family life.... togetherness, engaging in fun cooking projects and the best part?... eating the yummy fruits of their labour around the kitchen table.
Cooking can boost confidences and create memories ( and skills ) that will last a lifetime. The recipes are simple, tasty and are comprised of ingredients that are mostly in cupboards and refrigerators. The book has 45 recipes to tackle. They include breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, desserts, and more!
Instructions are very clear and the author has included the proper tools that are needed, a conversion chart, tips to personalize each recipe and has thrown in conversation starters, funny jokes and extra pages at the back where favourite recipes can be recorded. It is a very thorough, thoughtful book that checks every box for an excellent cooking manual for a child.
The illustrations are colourful and kid-friendly. This is a wonderful resource for a family in lockdown or for home study units where kids are learning digitally from home. I highly recommend this book. It's quality.
Very cute, loved the illustrations and easy yummy recipes. The recipes seem to cover a wide range of international cuisine. Very basic. There is something for everyone in here. What grabbed my attention was the pages without recipes where there are food jokes and thoughts or suggestions of things to do and how the child and adult can spend time together and do activities together. Plus the pages for them to write their own recipes. I think this is one of the most unique cookbooks for kids Ive seen and really heartfelt. It is one the kids (later on in life) will cherish. I really liked it and cannot wait to get a copy for my child.
I was given an advanced e-copy in exchange for a review.
My Very First Cookbook would make a nice gift for any young child who likes to help in the kitchen. It could also be a good purchase for a new reader, who would be interested in following the recipes on their own. The actual recipes are pretty simple. Most adults probably already know how to cook the meals included here without a recipe.
My Very First Cookbook is a tutorial cookbook and recipe collection for the youngest cooks. Due out 13th Oct 2020 from Sourcebooks Explore, it's 88 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is an exuberant little book full of yummy healthy recipes aimed at younger kids (circa 4 years+). There aren't any photos, but the illustrations are clear and easy to follow. The book has a logical format an introduction covers safety and hygiene and getting help from an adult for some tasks.
The recipes are arranged roughly thematically: breakfast, lunch, snacks, beverages, dinner, sides, desserts, and bonus deliciousness (philosophical musings about having fun in the kitchen, communication, and creativity). They have their ingredients listed bullet style in the sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard only (there's a metric conversion table in the front). Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and cooking directions. The ingredients are easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store. Many are very simple, none of them are overly complex. Extra tips and recipe alternatives are listed in text boxes in the recipes.
This would make a superlative choice for a family with kids or home study units for such diverse subjects as chemistry (what do you think will happen?, how did the food change as we were cooking?), math (measuring), and others (how does the food we eat differ from the food kids eat in other parts of the world?, how is it similar or the same?).
Five stars. This is also a great choice for a lockdown activity with kids.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Easy to read recipes and cute graphics. Animal families make the recipes on the facing page. Recipes are unique enough that most people wouldn’t already have them in their repertoire but simple enough to appeal to kids.
Not health food. Not friendly for special diets.
Cute jokes and topics of conversation for mealtime are included
This cookbook is easy to follow and kid friendly! Nice and colorful pages. They provide helpful hints and substitutes. There are options for every meal. They provide a space in the back to keep handy the recipes that your child likes. This is a great gift idea for the child who likes to cook or help you cook. Highly recommend!
Cooking with young children is a great way to include them into the decision making about what they eat. Kids can be picky eaters but when they have a say and actually help make new dishes it helps them try new foods. This is a great cookbook that can grow with the child. Very young children can help with some of the easy directions included with the recipes and as they get older there will be more things they can help with. The directions are numbered which will help the child know the step by step order to the recipe. It includes lots of helpful little hints that children can carry over with them into adulthood that will make them a better cook. It includes substitutions, sides to serve with the dishes, etc. It is a very well thought out cookbook. Cute illustrations of parent and child animals cooking together. Recipes range from Cheesy Eggs to Guacamole to Swedish Meatballs to Cobbler. It also includes pages where you can include your own recipes. This may become my new go to birthday present for children.
I love love love loved this book. I couldn't have gotten it at a better time. My 4 year old and I had been sheltering at home due to Corona for months and we had tried all sorts of things to stay entertained. This book was a fantastic way to get him involved and learning new, useful skills at the same time! Due to Covid 19 we are homeschooling this Autumn and intend to immediately pick up a copy of My Very First Cookbook to keep in our kitchen. Starting with once a week, my son will pick a recipe from the book, we will shop together for the ingredients and build the recipe as part of his school curriculum.
The pride that little guy felt standing on his stool at the kitchen counter mixing up mac & cheese that HE had made was unmatched! This is going to be an AMAZING gift for kids returning to school, starting to homeschool, for Thanksgiving so that little ones can proudly participate and for Christmas! I cannot recommend this title enough for the young chef-to-be. I can't wait to make up a little gift basket with a mixing bowl, apron and My Very First Cookbook for my friend's children as well.
I very much appreciate the opportunity to read and review this title. I was provided with a free pre-publication copy through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I truly am in love with this cookbook for young ones. In fact this will be my gift to fellow grandparents. You can personalize the book making it a keepsake for your own children or the grands. I think children will find most of the recipes quite appealing and if it is a food they are reluctant to try, they just might if they had a hand in preparation.
In this book you will find recipes for each meal of the day along with beverages. sides, dessert, and snack choices. For example: apple cinnamon overnight oats, veggie fried rice, cinnamon sugar popcorn, strawberry and orange slush, sheet pan fajitas, creamy Mexican rice and berry shortcrust cobbler. The recipes are well presented and easy to follow. There are also suggestions for substitutions, thus making cooking an impromptu adventure. “No cornstarch, simply sub the same amount of flour.”
Then there are the recipes for laughter… How do you make an egg roll? Just give it a little push.” We’ll you might not find it funny but a six year old will think it is hilarious even if they don’t get it!
At the end of the book are talking tips and fun suggestions for adults and children to do together when the cooking is done or while waiting for it to bake.
The text is encouraging to the young chefs who will be doing the cooking as well a caution when the adult needs to be directly involved.
Users will enjoy the playful illustrations. This cookbook is an excellent resource that will provide fun and nourishment for kids.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
I love this cookbook so much! The recipes are all so accessible and kid friendly. I love the aesthetic and the fun interactive activities that are weaved throughout the book. I would've loved to have this when I was a kid, but I definitely look forward to trying these out with my family. Absolutely recommend!
This is the book I have been looking for!
As a child, I had a book called My first cook book and it was the first and only one which allowed me to start cooking myself. Since then, I have struggled to find truly child-friendly cookbooks, but this is one.
Apart from a few recipes which are too text heavy for children (and sadly, some are on the first few pages), they are easy to read, minimal amount of text for young readers with a lot of pictures, graphics and shorter paragraphs.
There are beautiful animals depicted making parts of the recipes making it fun and cute to look at and the recipes are simple and great starter ideas and the book even has room for a child to write their own recipes (maybe family recipes) at the end.
This cookbook for little ones includes a number of appealing recipes for each meal of the day along with some beverage. sides, dessert, and snack choices. To name some of the recipes...there are apple cinnamon overnight oats, veggie fried rice, cinnamon sugar popcorn, strawberry and orange slush, sheet pan fajitas, creamy Mexican rice and berry shortcrust cobbler. The recipes are well presented and easy to follow. There are also suggestions for substitutions. The author is very encouraging to the young chefs who will be doing the cooking.
One small quibble, at the beginning of the book, the author suggests that children cook with a parent or other relative. In today's climate with so many different kinds of families and social arrangements, I feel that it would have been preferable to suggest cooking with a trusted adult. That having been said, this playfully illustrated cookbook looks like a good resource that will provide fun and nourishment for kids.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
