This collected work of short comics is a good mix of fiction and nonfiction. The different styles as well as topics speaks to the wide variety of voices that can be found in the LGBTQIA+ community. One of the things that I liked about this collection of short comics is that it shed light on both history as well as personal experience for members of the community.
This was a really great book with so many amazing stories. I loved getting to see all of the different art styles from the artists. Highly recommend checking this one out!
A beautiful collection of comics from LGBTQ+ artists of all genders and orientations. They're funny and heart wrenching and hopeful and all the emotions in between. Beautiful and diverse and a wonderful collection
Although this one took me awhile it was well worth the read. The range of these comics were vast and have something for everyone to learn. I loved the history, the stories from other countries, and the discussion of current topics facing the community today. I loved all the different art styles and different perspectives.
I had high expectations for this comic anthology, but was sort of disappointed - the collection felt disjointed, and I found more than a few spelling mistakes. Although there were some good comics, and I learned some interesting queer history, I ultimately felt like this wasn’t the right collection for me. I am glad books like this exist, though, and are making history available to different kinds of diverse readers.
This book has a great variety or stories representing the LGBTQIA+ community, told from many different voices. These are voices that need to be heard and uplifted! I could see this book doing very well in a high school or public library, helping young adults & adults feel seen. I enjoyed the different styles and point of views within this book.
This was really pretty great, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. This volume covers so much more of the queer spectrum than one usually gets, and I learned a lot. There's history, there's activism, there's inspiration, there's personal stories, there's so many feels rolling around in my heart! Anthologies can be a mixed bag, but this is a solid selection of stories, and the range of art and writing styles was a nice blend. I've been trying to think of favorite stories to shout out, but let's just shout out all of them, I can't pick. Buy this, read it, enjoy!

This graphic novel is incredibly important. It is a safe space for members of the LGBTQIA+ to share their coming of age and coming of gender stories. A few entries also provide background about LGBTQIA+ folx through history and around the world.
Part of the reason that this book is so important is that it lets all readers know that they don't need to be ashamed of who they are or afraid of who they're not. Breaking down the gender binary and stigmas that exist surrounding who people love is necessary. It's more important to remember that we are all people. We need to believe folx when they say who they are and the experiences that they've endured.
By placing this book in my high school classroom library, I hope that it will provide a safe space and perhaps even some guidance along my students' journeys. Overall, 5 out of 5 stars.
This anthology was so cute and wide ranged at the same time! Such a great collection. Very diverse with with graphic art. Super enjoyable.
Be Gay, Do Comics is a large collection of LGBTQ+ comics. I had read a few of the shorter pieces in The Nib but was delighted to read them again with other short pieces presented in the collection. The novel covers slice of life comics as well as those important moments in history. If you want to read a graphic novel that feels like the coolest collection of short stories ever, pick up Be Gay, Do Comics now!
This is an anthology of LGBTQIA experiences done by 30 different cartoonists. I was not familiar with the creative teams on the stories, but I really enjoyed most of them. There are stories of satire, history, some are sweet, and some will make you want to scream or cry. Because of the wide range of topics, it is unlike any anthology I have read before.
I am not part of the LGBTQIA community so there were a few of the stories that I didn't understand. I brought it to my son and we were able to have some amazing conversations about the content in this book.
I absolutely recommend this to anyone queer or who wants to see a slice of the daily queer experience. I also really appreciated the strong inclusion of ace voices!
A different imaging of the LGBT community and it's stories. This book was put together brilliantly and fulfills my love for graphic novels. The culture and history were accurate both in timeline and diversity of the community.
I would recommend this for anyone looking for LGBT books and/or graphic novels.
What an AMAZING collection of queer stories. I was blown away by "Be Gay, Do Comics" for it's amazing collection of authors and artists, as well as the stories that were told! Seeing some of my favorite comic artist (such as Archie Bongiovanni) depict such meaningful and heartfelt experiences was incredible. This graphic novel is informative, inclusive, and rich with diversity and emotion. I learned many new things about queer communities, movements, and lives that I never knew about (even though I'm a very active queer community member)!
This book is perfect for the lqbtq book lover, someone who is wanting to learn more, and places that need more lbgtq recourses (libraries, schools, shelters, etc...). I cannot recommend this ENOUGH! I'm ordering it for my libraries collection today!
A delightful collection of comics about the queer experience. I think it will go in the adult collection at my library, but I fully expect many a teen to pick it up!
What I loved most about this book was the sheer quantity and variety of identities within the pages - asexuality, demisexuality, polyamory and more - all discussed with the same respect and sensitivity.
Some comics were funny, some emotional and poignant. Some comics were Educational. I’d recommend this book to anyone LGBT+ or ally as a perfect collection of queer comics.
Be Gay, Do Comics is an anthology with more than 30 contributors, all discussing some aspect of queer life. This was a refreshingly diverse and thought-provoking collection. Most anthologies in this vein that I've read have played it pretty safe: they've usually been very white, and mostly focused on gay cis men, with the overarching message being one of acceptance. Be Gay, Do Comics covers a wide range of topics from a lot of different voices, including many artists of color and trans artists, and includes comics about queer liberation and resisting assimilation.
It's hard to speak about an anthology like this in a cohesive way, because they are all so different: in art style, tone, topic, and identity. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Although as always there were some comics I liked more than others, there weren't any that I felt were weak. It's a great opportunity to be exposed to a lot of different artists as well. This is one I would happily recommend. It's not focused specifically on lesbians and bi women, but there is definitely sapphic representation. I'm happy to see that queer anthologies are expanding to be a little more challenging and diverse than they were just a handful of years ago.
Full review will go up at the Lesbrary September 1st, and will be covered on the Sept 1st episode on All the Books.
To start, I've been following the Nib for a few years and I love nonfiction comics in general. This collection definitely lived up to the hype that I already had for it. I loved that there were so many perspectives and how each comic's author addressed the spectrum of being queer.
Be Gay, Do Comics is an enticing anthology that blends LGBTQ history with creators' personal experiences navigating their sexual orientation and gender identity. Before reading this, I thought I knew quite a bit of the origins of gay liberation in America, but the outstanding comic on the Lavender Scare taught me so much more! The alternation of types of comics makes this volume an enjoyable read, and the inclusion of intersectionality, queer self-policing, and anti-colonialist gay liberation make for an intellectually robust read. By turns vulnerable and powerful, this is a great choice for any library's collection.
This was absolutely fantastic. An anthology full of queer comics about being queer? Sign me up!
I loved the mix of voices and styles, as well as the history and personal. I learned so much, while also reading so many stories that mirrored my experiences and felt so validating.
I rarely see queer anthologies with so many voices from aro/ace and non-binary creators. I found this so comforting and amazing! I laughed and cried multiple times. I think this is essential for any queer collection, and any collection in general. I have already told my friends to look out for this book, and I will be telling many more. I frankly think it was pretty near perfect.
