Witches of Brooklyn by Sophie Escabasse is a middle school graphic novel that is about a middle school aged girl named Effie whose mother is not able to care for her so she goes to live with her strange aunts in Brooklyn. The new living arrangements begin with a rocky start but eventually her aunts warm up to her and she becomes fond of them as well. She soon learns that there is more to her aunts than meets the eyes and she shares the same secret talents that they possess. Effie meets some new friends at her school and is even introduced to a popular pop star that comes to the house for help. The pop star is even taught a valuable lesson by Effie.
I loved this book. I have been wanting to read more graphic novels and I am so glad I read this one. The illustrations were beautiful. I loved the character's outfits and facial expressions. The choice of colors in the images were beautifully picked.
My middle school students in 6th grade will love this book. I think it is at the right reading level for students between 4th-6th. I will definitely recommend it to my students. They love graphic novels. Students will relate to the idea of starting over in a new place, meeting new friends, fitting in and possibly growing up in different family environments. The story was funny and entertaining. There was even a comical knight in shining armor that makes an appearance and adds his sarcastic comments throughout this book. You don't have to be a middle school student to like this book. Anyone who is a fan of graphic novels or just cute stories will find this entertaining. I can't wait for the sequel.
The base idea here is a standard one - a tween girl discovering that she has magic and needing to hide signs of those abilities around her peers. This clearly mimics the fear and awkwardness of puberty. This book adds in the elements of recent grief and having to help a celebrity, so we also have elements of the disappointment that comes from meeting your heroes and discovering that they are real people with flaws. And of course, the expected messages of being true to yourself and enjoying things for their own value instead of being concerned about what others ill think. We have some interesting rules of magic. I'm interested to see where else this story might go.
Witches of Brooklyn is absolutely adorable! I was afraid I wasn't going to like protagonist Effie based on the first few pages, but once she opens up to her aunts, I was hooked. I can't wait to read Effie and her aunt's further adventures in future entries to the series. Highly suggested for all libraries with middle grade readers!
The illustration style of this middle grade graphic novel was so cute!! Between Effie's newly-awakened magic bringing paintings and other images to life, her aunts' large and quirky Brooklyn home, and a pink dog named Lion, fun visual details flood each page. I wish more attention was paid to the recent loss of Effie's mother--you could not say grief is a central element of this book--but as an engaging story about a girl making new friends and finding her place in a new family, Witches of Brooklyn hits the spot! Perfect for fans of Sabrina the Teenage Witch looking for a younger narrative.
I liked the start of what I am assuming will be a series. An orphaned girl is taken to a house with older ladies. They are her grant aunts. They are herbalists and acupuncturists. But they are also witches. And our girl finds her powers awakening and wrecking a little havoc. I really enjoyed this read and can see boys, girls, young and old alike finding enjoyment in the tale.
This book is really fun! Watching the relationship between Effie and her aunts growing is really heartwarming. The story has plenty of funny moments and kids will enjoy seeing the magical shenanigans.
Well, I loved this. I fell in love with the characters instantly, and I love the way that Effie found out about her magic! I love the system of magic, too, and that Effie has aunts to help guide her through learning magic. The illustrations are GORGEOUS, I especially loved the color work and the red of Tillys' face was perfect! I can't wait to share this one with my young patrons.
This was a super cute, awesome read. I loved this book and the art. This would be a great addition to any library.
The Witches is Brooklyn was a quick, easy read that will appeal to upper grade readers who enjoy graphic novels. I’ll be interested to see where this goes as a series. I did not think that the plot for this was very exciting, but a younger reader might be more engaged in the pop star presence.
This is a great graphic novel! I love the characters, the plot, and the setting. It is imaginative and shows great friendships and family values. I finished it and found myself wanting to read more of Effie's shenanigans with her family and friends. The artwork is both simplistic and quirky and fits the story perfectly with lots of color. I would love to read more if this turns into a series.
This book was just the cutest!! Thanks again to NetGalley and Random House Graphic for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for feedback.
This middle grade book was adorable and had humorous (and cute) Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes. Effie goes to live with her two aunts and she doesn’t know anything about her magical abilities until after she’s lived with them for awhile. You get to see how Effie learns how to work her magic, plus figure out a solution to a pop star’s startling dilemma. Any age will enjoy this book and should add this to their graphic novel collection!
An adorable and lovely graphic novel for young readers!! All of the characters are loveable in their own ways, and I can easily see this becoming a long-running series.
A total win.
A true MG graphic novel. Great story, great Witchery, quirky aunt-grandma figures (ALWAYS a YES, even better when they’re witches!) and a spunky MC. And as a sidenote as a brown teacher I LOVE when I also get rep and read/see a brown teacher in MG books. Huzzah.
Beyond all that, I loved the art, loved the feeling of being connected to past witchy stories/ history combined with the totally modern day vibe within it as well. I adored this and I need the next one!!
Easy win of a recommendation for your MG crowd! And of course a definite buy for your classroom library! This will be a hit, and rightfully so.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Fun and playful kid-friendly graphic novel about a young girl who is placed by CPS in her aunt's home, only to discover her aunt, her aunt's roommate, and she herself are witches. This volume is clearly the first part of a series that I, for one, am very much looking forward to reading more of.
This one gave me some middle grade Practical Magic vibes, about a girl named Effie who lost her parents and goes to live with her aunt and her partner, who are witches. The illustrations are colorful and inviting and suited the story well. I hope to see another book about these characters!
Witches of Brooklyn is about a sweet girl who loses her mom and is suddenly living with two odd strangers. Hijinx ensue and Effie is a witch just like the two odd strangers (who she now loves!). Fans of Phoebe and Her Unicorn and Raina Telgemeier will adore this new series!
The witches of Brooklyn will appeal to the late elementary and middle graders who like Raina Telge eier's books and are looking for more fun to read graphic novels of a short chapter book length. I liked how the characters were all new to each other, and the mysterious wa
I love books about witches and I love graphic novels, so this was perfect for me. Witches of Brooklyn is about a girl named Effie who goes to live with her aunts after her mother dies. However, it's clear that her aunts aren't quite normal. Effie learns to live with her new family, makes friends at school, and discovers she's a witch.
This is a sweet, interesting graphic novel that's perfect for middle grade readers.
Witches in Brooklyn? What a fantastic, outrageous idea! Graphic novel fans will fall in love with Effie and her magical new family.
Strong in characterization, it also includes many twists and turns that will keep readers captivated. Combine this with phenomenal graphics, and you have a great story.
Highly recommended!
Witches of Brooklyn by Sophie Escabasse is a delightful story about a recently orphaned girl, Effie, dropped off in the middle of the night at her estranged aunt’s house. As the story unfolds you learn about these two magical, literally, women who find themselves suddenly in charge of a young girl. Aunt Selimene, gruff but kind, and her partner Carlota, sweet and gentle but willing to throw down if you barge into her house, are witches using their home as an apothecary and acupuncture to hide it.
Effie comes into her power under this house and under the careful eye of these two women begins to discover her power and create new relationships in her new home and at school.
This is a fun book and I can’t wait to see more of Effie and her aunts.
