A beautifully illustrated and impeccably researched volume, showing us how and where Rembrandt became Rembrandt. Born a miller's son in Leiden in 1606, we witness the artist's talent and determination to improve through his early years, painting his own portrait repeatedly, not from narcissism but for lack of other models. An excellent addition to an art lover's art history shelf.
