This was a page turner for me. Twin Vs. Twin and I definitely see the end coming. I love how the author managed to put a spin on a twin mystery. Overall definitely recommend reading it!
All I can saw is WOW! This kept me guessing up until the end. I couldn’t put this one down. Iris agrees to help her sister Summer sail a yacht across the ocean. When the yacht arrives only one sister remains onboard. What happened on the crossing and what happens the remaining sisters assumes the identity of the other?
This book is about mirror twins. Total opposites that take a yacht over the Indian Ocean together but only one arrives at the destination. The book takes you on twists and turns of deceit and secrets. The book has several oh surprises towards the end of the book that wraps up the story.

I did not finish this book, I read almost halfway through and it just didn’t grab me. I kept hoping it would get better, but nothing seemed to happen. It was even lacking in build up.
Loved it! A fast-paced, quick read that I couldn't put down until finishing. As the title suggests, it's a story about mirror twins- they are identical but their features mirror each other. The twins, Iris and Summer, also have very different personalities. It seems like one is the good twin and one is the dark twin. Summer has an idyllic life and Iris wants what she has. Add in a large inheritance up for grabs for the first one to get pregnant and things get crazy. I think I enjoyed this book so much because I never really knew where it was heading. The characters' true motivations and how far they would go to get what they want are not clear until the end. My only minor critique is that I was left with a few unanswered questions and would have liked an epilogue to see how things turn out a few years down the road. Overall great read and I look forward to seeing more from this author!
3-1/2 stars. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC is this book. It was a very intriguing premise. It was not all-encompassing nor did it keep me on the edge of my seat as I had hoped but was a good read with a surprising twist.
Thank you to William Morrow and NetGalley for the chance to preview this thriller.
Iris and Summer look very much alike because they are mirror twins. That means they have opposite anatomical features. Summer has all her organs on the correct side and Iris has them on the opposite side. They also have very different personalities.
Summer is married to Adam, Iris is single. Summer asks Iris to come to Thailand to help sail the family ship to the Seychelles, which she does. Part way through the trip, Iris wakes up one day and can’t find Summer anywhere and eventually discovers video that she was thrust into the sea by the boom.
A parallel plot weaves throughout that whichever one of their seven siblings produces an heir first will inherit $100 million. That brings into play lots of rivalries and questions.
I don’t want to give away any more of the plot. I thought I had it figured out, but I was only about 1/10th right. So much more was going on than I'd surmised.
I tore through the pages of this ebook trying to find out who did what when. For a debut book, Carlyle plots masterfully. Her characterization is spot on. I assume her knowledge of sailing was correct, but I wouldn’t know if it wasn’t.
I gave it four stars, but it’s really 4.5 stars. That’s only because one of the aspects of the plot rang false for me.
But don’t let that stop you from reading this. It’s a breathless and stunning thriller.
Summer was the first born twin and the most shy. Iris was a surprise a few minutes later. She was not as shy as Summer.
In fact, Iris was always jealous of Summer. Summer seemed to just have everything handed to her and was prettier.
As they grew into adults, they were friends, but Iris was still jealous.
When their father died, his will made things between them a bit tricky because even though they didn’t discuss it, they were or at least Iris was competing to be the first to become pregnant to inherit their father’s hundred million dollar fortune.
Only one child could inherit the money and not share it with any of the other siblings that included the siblings their father had with his two other wives.
We then meet the sisters when Iris has left her husband and Summer needs Iris to help take the family yacht across the ocean.
The two sisters take the yacht together, but what Summer tells Iris while they are on their way will change everything. What happens the next morning is even worse.
Summer was no where to be found, and she hadn’t awakened Iris at midnight as planned.
Where could Summer be? Of course Iris thinks the worst, and knows the worst has happened.
But...has the worst happened?
Iris always wanted to be Summer. Maybe she could be Summer now that she is gone.
The decision was easily made for Iris/Summer when she made it to shore, and the deceit begins.
It was nerve wracking thinking how Iris was going to pull all of this off. She even thought twice about it herself.
Many surprises await the reader as the book continues. Does Iris/Summer get away with what she did?
The girl in the mirror will keep you guessing, and keep you turning the pages.
Those readers who enjoy nautical jargon and journeys on a yacht will also be pulled in. 4/5
This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Great story of deception and greed. Identical twin sisters, Summer and Iris, were always close growing up. Then Summer gets married to a widower with a young son, and Iris is envious of her sister’s wonderful life. Iris’s marriage isn’t as good and she is in the process of divorcing her husband. Then she gets a call from Summer asking her to help sail the family yacht from Thailand to the Seychelles. While at sea, Iris wakes up one morning to find herself alone on the yacht. She has no idea what happened to Summer. When she arrives in the Seychelles, Summer’s husband Adam is already there and assumes that Iris is Summer. Iris doesn’t tell him who she really is because she sees an opportunity. When Summer’s and Iris’s father died, he left his huge fortune to the first of his seven children who produces an heir. Iris sees the opportunity to inherit if she can have a child with Adam. Life gets very complicated for Iris. Rose Carlyle has written a very interesting, twisty, suspenseful story. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Carlyle. Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy.
This was the first time I ever heard of mirror twins. Where one twin is born normal and the other twin mirrors them with all their organs on the other side. Summer is the perfect golden girl and Iris is pretty much the black sheep of the family. Summer has the perfect life, with the perfect husband. When they both go on a yachting trip Summer disappears and Iris is found. and mistaken for Summer. Iris can now have the life she has always envied and there is also the 100 million dollar inheritance on the line. Just how far will Iris go to get what she's always wanted. I have to say although I wish the ending could have been better this book had me invested for hours to find out what happens next.
I was not a fan of this book at all. The plot was outlandish and completely unbelievable. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, all were self absorbed and honestly bratty. The storyline was disjointed and I quite often felt like I was missing part of the dialogue, the plot twists were strange. I did enjoy the parts about sailing the yacht through the Indian Ocean.
I zipped through this book, because I couldn’t wait to figure out the mystery. I found it rather unbelievable that one twin could so easily pass for the other. I picked up on several of the clues early one, but did not anticipate the ending. I found the book enjoyable, but very far fetched.
I won't be posting review on any other platform as I did not enjoy this book. I felt that the dialogue between sisters took too long to get to the present day. It seemed a bit predictable from the start, and the ending was just obvious.
Wow, so many twists and turns in this story about almost identical twins, Summer and Iris. The novel travels from Australia to Thailand and back via the family yacht. With great descriptions of the voyage, you feel like you're along for the ride with the sisters. You never quite figure out which is the "good" twin until the last page.
I loved this book. Could not put it down. Tale of twins and sibling rivalry....the good twin and the bad twin...never quite sure which twin was the bad or good. And to top it all, nothing like the promise of a large inheritance to pit a family against each other. Can’t wait for the author to write another book. Definitely one of my favorite books I have read this year.
The Girl in the Mirror is a great thriller, if you thought Gone Girl was crazy this book is for you! The ending will surprise you!
It’s hard to comment on this book an not give away any spoilers so I’ll just say it’s a very good mystery that reveals a darker side of being a twin. High recommend.
I've heard that one should write about what one knows. Following that logic, this author certainly knows about sailing. And now I know a little more about it. Most of it was over my head, though.
Summer Carmichael is blonde, beautiful and appears to lead a charmed life. Her mirror image twin, Iris, however, has always felt she is somehow less in every respect and constantly tries to imitate Summer. Summer has the perfect marriage while envious Iris' is falling apart. You get the picture?
Summer calls Iris while in Thailand and begs Iris to come and help her sail the family yacht across the Indian Ocean because the yacht is about to be impounded for overstaying its permit. Summer's stepson is in the hospital and husband, Adam, must stay with him. Iris, staying at Summer's home in Australia while her divorce is finalized, immediately flies to her sister's side. Oh, yes, and just to spice up the story, the twins' deceased, thrice-married father has stipulated in his will that the off-spring who produces an heir first, gets his non-sharable $100,000 fortune. And, of course, blessed Summer is pregnant. And so the twins set out on their epic voyage. What could possibly go wrong? When Summer is swept overboard while Iris is sleeping, Iris searches in vain for her sister and then proceeds to the Seychelles where Adam is waiting. Adam mistakes Iris for Summer and Iris steps into her sister's life. Not pregnant? No problem. Iris quickly becomes pregnant with Adam's loving help.
Twists abound in this debut novel by Australian writer Rose Carlyle. Some are obvious and tie up plot holes, others strain belief, especially the final twist. Although an engrossing read for the most part, I did find myself looking at the percentage remaining and wondering how long we were going to be sailing. None of the characters are especially appealing, including the stepmother and stepsisters who are also vying for the fortune. The brief appearance of the younger, gay brother being the sole exception and the only character not in the running for the fortune.
Thank you William Morrow and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in return for my honest review. The book will be published in October, 2020.
The Face in the Mirror is about how identical twins who are so much alike yet can be very different. I could sense the tension building in the story but didn’t know what was going to happen next. Without giving away spoilers, I realized that siblings can be very competitive even when they are twins. How far would the twins go to get 100 million dollar inheritance? Rose Carlyle did a masterful job in conveying their similarities along with the differences that made the story riveting.
I didn’t finish this book as the writing style didn’t appeal to me. I could see that it was going to be an interesting and wild story but just not my type of book.
