Carlyle lulls the reader into the story (or what you think it is). Then you feel like you’re in the doldrums. Then she takes the trade winds and whips you about. A few times. What an ending!
This is the absolute best thriller I have read this year, 2020!!!! Summer Rose and Iris are mirror twins and identical, but one is a very evil sister, the twists and plot changes are EXPERTLY accomplished and this book is a delight!!! Nothing is what you think and once you start reading you won’t be able to put this book down!!! The cultural and nautical aspects are a bonus and you just May fall in love!! This author makes you question yourself and who you’re rooting for, awesome read!!!#NETGALLEY#THE GIRLINTHEMIRROR
This was not an enjoyable read for me. The characters were so unlikable that I had a difficult time continuing to read but I kept going. The “twist” at the end was very predictable. There were definitely no surprises.
Iris and Summer are mirror-image twins, whose own mother can't tell them apart. As one twin assumes the identity of the other, to pull off the ultimate "switch", it is hard to believe that no one can tell them apart....that no one catches on. But in the end this carefully planned switch all begins to make sense. Just when you have it all figured out, another twist throws everything out the window. I read this book in one day and could not put it down until I saw how it ended.
Iris and Summer are mirror twins whose father left a 100 hundred million dollar inheritance for the child who produces an heir first. When Summer calls Iris to Thailand to help her sail their yacht to the Seychelles, she jumps at the chance to help the sister that she envies. When tragedy strikes In the middle of the ocean, Iris has to make a quick decision. Will she be able to take over Summer’s perfect life and earn the money? Or will she be found out?
The Girl in the Mirror was hard to put down and focused on family, greed and manipulation. I had to read the ending more than once because it was so twisted and unexpected. I would definitely read another book from this author. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the e-arc.
Twins - they said often times they aren't distinguished by their physical looks but by their behavior. This was a story about what happened when Iris dreamed of becoming her twin sister, Summer. Always be aware of what you want as sometimes it can happen! And then there can be unexpected surprises. Nevertheless, I loved this story. It was a good page turner into the night and came together at the end.
A psychological thriller about twin rivalry - Iris and Summer are beautiful and are identical twins to look at but perhaps not so identical in nature. I don’t want to give too much away but this was one of those books that keep you up late at night wanting to find out what happened. It is also one of those books that stays with you. Tension and suspense abound. A great read and highly recommended.
I have identical twin grandsons who are now in the 4th grade and I still have to ask, “which one are you?” Thus my initial interest in this book. I cannot tell you at this point when I got hooked. All I know is I lost several nights’ of sleep telling myself...just a few more pages, one more chapter! I love trying to figure out where the plot is going to take me and whose bad or good, but the last third of this book took me by surprise. The ending was a shocker! No peeking!!
Iris and Summer are identical twins - mirror twins, yet they aren’t absolutely alike. Iris has always been jealous of Summer’s seemingly perfect life, good fortune and loving husband. When a family emergency arises, Iris is presented with the opportunity to sail a yacht across the Indian Ocean with Adam, Summer’s husband. Iris has had quite a few fantasies about Adam, so she jumps at the chance to go. In one of the first of many plot twists, Summer is the one who goes along on the voyage and not Adam. Iris finds herself in the middle of the ocean, alone, and not sure how it all happened. She makes a decision in that moment which will change her life.
This book was filled with plot twists and events along the way that questioned what you believed to be true. I loved this book and read it in one day. You think you understand the plot, and just like that, everything changes. There were many suspenseful moments in this fast paced novel and I definitely recommend it.
The Girl in the Mirror is a suspenseful thriller, Iris and Summer are mirror twins. Iris had always envied Summer because even though they look alike she always saw Summer as the pretty one with the perfect life. When Summer asks Iris for help moving the family yacht to a different location, she jumps at the chance. But while sailing the yacht Summer disappears. So Iris decides to pretend to be her sister and lets everybody believe it was Iris that disappeared. But what Iris didn’t know was that her sister had a lot of secrets. This book had a lot of twists and turns and a surprise ending. Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC.
Thrilling page turner! A gripping tale of sisterly envy, secret lies and family greed. Iris has always thought that her identical twin sister, Summer, is the prettier twin who is seemingly living the perfect life. In fact, Summer's life is so perfect that she's currently taking a year off from her already glamorous life to travel the world with her handsome husband in their fancy yacht. Iris' life is far from ideal and definitely not fancy. Iris is in the midst of a divorce, stuck in a career she doesn't love and currently homeless. When a family tragedy occurs and Summer beckons her, Iris drops everything to help her sister on the yacht. Summer suddenly disappears from the yacht and Iris steps in to take her place, knowing that most people can't tell the sisters apart. Finally, it appears that Iris has the life she's always envied - Summer's life. But is Summer's life everything Iris dreamed it would be? This story has lots of delicious plot twists and turns that will keep you guessing throughout the book. I couldn't put it down! Highly recommended!
There is a $100 million inheritance at stake, to be bequeathed to the first grandchild of wealthy Ridgeford Carmichael whose heirs are flung into an intense competition for that first infant child. “The money stayed in trust until this precious grandchild came of age, but the parents of the heir were the trustees and had wide powers to use the money however they liked.” His widow and his two former wives have seven children, four of whom are childbearing age at the time he passes at age 60.
Central to the story are 23-year-old mirror twin sisters. Narrator Iris is recently separated and has harbored a lifelong jealousy toward her sister, Summer who enjoys a blissful marriage with her successful, old-money husband Adam in Australia. They own a 60’ sailing yacht, Bathsheba, which the sisters pilot from Phuket, Thailand to the Seychelles where Adam’s family maintains a sprawling compound. Their route brings them through the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean, sailing past the Maldives, Somalia and Madagascar.
Summer announces her pregnancy just prior to the launching of their journey, so her child becomes the presumptive heir to the $100 million fortune. Always the nicer twin, Summer assures Iris: “We can’t share the inheritance with you, but we can give you our own money, Adam’s money I should say. We’ll make sure you never go without. Adam’s very generous as I’m sure you’ll find out.” What happens on the yacht forms the crux of this twisty, can’t-put-down, high stakes thriller.
Meanwhile in Australia, another potential heir, the twins‘ half-sister Virginia, is pregnant by Richie, her cousin by marriage. Iris is unhappy that Summer has bested her in the baby race, but is even less happy with her half-sister’s pending motherhood. “Virginia is nice enough but she’s boring. I don’t even know what her hobbies are, apart from incest and stealing other peoples‘ fortunes.”
Ben, the twins’ younger gay brother in New York, has been out of touch with the family. Iris suspects that Ben may have produced an heir without the family’s knowledge. It’s a finely crafted, fast-paced debut novel. Highly recommended!
Reviewed with thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to receive an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. Publication date: October 20, 2020.
Thanks to Harper Collins and Scene of the Crime for the early copy of this thriller. Twins! It's a twin thriller. And yachting is a major part of the plot. I couldn't put it down.
The Girl in the Mirror shows us twin sisters who look the same on the outside, but are vastly different inside. Summer is the first born, who to her twin sister Iris, seems to have the easy life: handsome husband, home, etc.
Summer requests Iris help her sail her yacht to the Seychelles, to which Iris jumps at, wanting to leave her recent divorce behind. During their voyage, Iris wakes up to find Summer has gone missing. When she lands at her destination, Summer's husband awaits her, mistaking her to be Summer, and the lies and cover ups start to accumulate for Iris.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the last half where the twists and turns kept coming. Wonderful thriller!
Thank you to Scene of the Crime Early Read, Sam Glatt and NetGalley for the free preview ebook edition to read and review.
This was just not the right book for me. I was not enjoying the language or where the story was going. Did not finish after reading a little over half the novel.
The plot of "The Girl in the Mirror" is a little wild and soap opera-y, but it was a very twisty, well-written thriller!
Loved this book. Perfect for readers of suspense who loved the other girl/women titles. Will be purchasing for our library and recommending to patrons.
I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand it was fast paced, thrilling, and I wanted to keep reading to finish it. On the other hand, I kept thinking that I already read or watched this exact same story. I figured out the main plot or mystery almost immediately but I still kept reading to make sure I was correct in my assumption. I was not a fan of any of the characters in the book as they were all self-absorbed. I liked the steady flow of the story so it kept me interested despite the negatives I listed previously. I think I would have liked it better if the characters were more likeable or if the storyline wasn't familiar to me.
Thanks to Netgalley, William Morrow, Harper Collins, and the Scene of the Crime Early Reads for the for the advanced copy of the book. The opinions are my own.
Captivating read.
Unputdownable.
Congratulations to debut author, Rose Carlyle. So glad it jumped ahead of others in my TBR collections.
Thank you to Book Club Early read, Harper Collins and Net Galley for early access.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was on a book slump and when I picked this up, I read it in two days. You will enjoy the suspense and the storyline of this whirlwind.
