I would give this 3.5 stars if I could. I cannot give it 4 because the ending was so frustrating to me. Ben recognized the switch because his sister was smelling a bouquet of Irises? Seriously? I get that the ending only works because he can’t truly tell them apart but geez. I wanted to smack my head in frustration at the end.
Too much time was given to boating. I couldn't get past that. From the cover, it seemed that mid-way the tide turns and the book picks. up. I couldnt hang in there that long.
This book was extremely slow to start and certainly a slog, but really picked up pace later on once we finally got off the boat and the story pretty much flew from there. There were so many interesting twists and turns, which made sticking with it until the end worth it.
This dark, twisty thriller involves identical twins, a perilous sailing trip, and a large extended family whose ties are distorted by greed and dysfunction. In other words--a great read! I sped through it, and really enjoyed it!
Many thanks to Scene of the Crime Early Reads and NetGalley for the ARC!
Interesting thriller. Lots of description about boats and sailing, which was new to me, so it slowed down my reading pace a bit. Rich details that help paint a good picture of the story as it unfolds.
This book is one of those book that comes with a bit of hype but may not exactly live up to ever single bit of it. Still, it has a lot going for it.
In this thriller, there are twin sisters Iris and Summer. Although they look exactly alike, they are very different. Iris has always been envious of Summer and her fortunes and easy way around people and through life. Now, a time comes where Iris is presented with the opportunity to live that charmed and perfect life she's so craved, not to mention get her hands on a certain major money inheritance in the process. However, as is often the case, Iris soon begins to see that what once seemed so perfect may really be closer to what could be an inescapable nightmare. I don't want to tell you too much more about the actual story because it is a thriller. You have to go along with it as it happens so that it makes a bit more sense.
There are a few things that made me not like this one as much as I had hoped to. It had some pretty hefty time jumps that, although did help move the story along very quickly, seemed to leave just a little too much out because of all that was going down between time a and time b. Then there was the simple word, all one word, "sexyrape". I'll just leave that there as it is. Make of it what you will.
There are good things as well though. The writing is great. It is a style that sucks you in and keeps you invested in the story, even with what I mentioned above. You care about the characters and what's going to happen even when/if you really don't like the character(s) at all! It's so easy to imagine more books by the author being terrific. I'd definitely read them.
I recommend giving this one a go if you are at all interested so you can see what you think about it for yourself. The reviews are pretty good and I'd really hate for you to miss out on something that you'd really like so you might want to try it out just in case.
Thank you so much to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for a the review copy!
Twin sisters Iris and Summer may look alike and are easily confused but these two sisters have extremely different moral compasses. When one sister goes missing the other takes over her life. The story leads you down what some would think is a predictable path. And then the plot twists leave you wondering, "What just happened? Where did that all come from?"
Thank you Netgally, William Morrow, and Book Club Girl for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fingernail biting thriller that when you think you have it figured out--you really don't. "Twin" stories have been done before, but not quite like this one. In the beginning the reader is introduced to the two twins and probably will pick a favorite, but in the end finds out that he/she is wrong, wrong, wrong. This story is filled with convolutions, twists and turns, and a terrifying conclusion that will keep you on the edge of the seat throughout the whole book.
What a huge twist! I thought I had this storyline figured out but boy was I wrong! This was addicting!
Mirror twins Iris and Summer are identical in looks, but remarkably different in heart. Iris has never been able to refuse her sister, so she goes to Thailand to help sail the family yacht when she receives Summer's desperate call. When the voyage goes wrong, how will the remaining twin handle the situation? Will the desire to claim the inheritance, set up by their father to reward the first of his children to produce an heir, lead the sisters down a bad path?
The author makes some questionable decisions regarding the plot, leading the reader down a predictable path that took away from the thrilling nature of the book. Having read other books with a good twin, bad twin plot, the sense of discovery is just not there for me. The story in the background, regarding the father's twisted inheritance and the way in which his will is written, seems to be there more for plot direction than anything else. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend The Girl in the Mirror to other readers.
Disclaimer: I was given an opportunity to read The Girl in the Mirror, via NetGalley and the publisher, William Morrow. The decision to review this book was entirely my own.
This book was a roller coaster of a ride. Two twin sisters, one who wants the inheritance more then the other, the catch is they have to give birth to a heir. So when Iris sees a opportunity to become her perfect twin after a accident that happens out to sea she takes it. This book was filled with so many twist and turns and then the ending just caught me totally of guard. I enjoyed this book and if you like twisty thrillers I think you would too.
I thought there would be a twist to this book by just looking at the over. That is why I read this book. But as I read and got into the book, I felt I was wrong. There is no twist.....well, there was a twist. This was a great book that kept my interest. I had a difficult time putting it down,
I like the cover of the book. The colors are eye catching. The book had me hooked after the first few sentences.
The Girl in the Mirror definitely has classic thriller vibes. A great story with a twisty ending! Will be purchasing for the library's collection and recommending for book group discussion.
A thriller that keeps you guessing - which sister is the "good" one? Two twin sisters are the literal mirror image of one another, but one glides through life while the other stumbles. At least, that's what Iris, the "lesser" sister believes. When Summer asks for Iris' help in sailing a boat across the ocean, Iris accepts, and is drawn into a net of intrigue. It turns out, there's millions of dollars on the line, and both sisters will stop at nothing to get it. This one will keep you guessing until the end, but ultimately doesn't allow you to root for either sister to win out.
A completely suspenseful novel! This story had me on the edge of my seat until the very last line and was one of the best books I have read in years! What a page turner! Can't wait for more thrillers from Rose Carlyle!
Debut novelist Rose Carlyle does not disappoint with her first novel. Suspense driven and full of twists and turns we enter the world of twins Summer and Iris and their fight on the open seas to win their dead father's fourtune. Which one is truly pregnant and can produce the first born grandchild of the late Ridge Carmichal who will stand to inherit 100 million dollars. Sisters always, or sisters sometimes? This webbed story takes us on a ride that you don't see coming, the end will have you re reading the last chapter to answer your own question, "What just happened?". Thank you to William Morrow Books and Book Club Girl for sending our book club copies. Grab your copy today, you will devour it in one sitting.
I loved this book for about 2/3 of it but the last part of it was just so wildly improbable that it made me dislike the whole book.
Um, YES?? this novel was so captivating, and i honestly recommend that you go into this book blind because i definitely wished i did! this has to be one of my favorite thrillers, i was constantly on edge and the ending...
Blood is not always thicker than water as evidenced by sisters Iris and Summer. Something is off between the two despite when their father's will becomes spitefully obvious of his true feelings. This one was reminiscent of Sarah Pinborough's writing. It's all about the ending.
Really enjoyed this one— all the twisty turns of my dreams!! The first third or so was pretty slow, but the final third was so intense and I could not wait to figure out what was happening. Ever so slightly predictable, but even if I had figured out the “what”, the “how” was way more fun to see unfold!
Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins/William Morrow for an advanced copy of this book.
