I enjoyed this book but it relied a bit on knowing the back story. I had read the previous book in the series a while ago and couldn't quite remember what the big deal about the spying was. But over all I found the story fun and the characters interesting.
This is a very fun book. For a Regency Romance, there is a lot of intrigue and adventure. I love the Wallflowers and their independent, feminist spirits. Definately recommended to Regency fans.
This was an intriguing story. Its a bit of a thriller and romance in a histrorical novel. I have never read this author before but I really enjoyed this story about two very different people who are betrothed to each other. At times I felt like I missed some things not having read the first book so I suggest you start with the first book and I would say this story does not stand alone.
Faith is engaged to Nick but Nick feels she invaded his privacy by sping on him with her friends and so he no longer wants to marry. Meanwhile Nick is spy and some of his enemies are after him.
I enjoyed the story and the writing was done very well. I didn't adore Nick but I loved Faith and her friends,
A great sequel in the Wallflowers of West Lane series. This novel focuses Faith and Nick, who are engaged but in poor terms. Faith is determined to discern what type of man her potential husband is, but Nick would like to keep his secrets his own, but everything comes to a head when Nick's past shows up in England looking for revenge.
I really enjoyed the romance in this book, which was full of action. It was a nice, quick read.
I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Lady Faith Landon is engaged to Nicholas Ellsworth, Duke of Breckenridge. We first met these two in The Earl Not Taken as supporting characters and this book is their story where they take front and center. Lady Faiths mother set up the engagement with Nicholas without her knowledge and wanted to know more about him before actually going through with it. She simply wanted to know more about him, his character but the Duke has secrets and a past he has trouble sharing. After the high jinks in the last book the Duke isn’t sure what he feels about Faith anymore or wether they should be married and has given Faith an out without destroying any future marriage prospects.
In Misleading a Duke, Lady Faith has tricked Nicholas into coming out to a friends country house where she is hoping to explain her actions and learn more about him and his secrets. They were just starting to get to know one another when Nicholas past catches up with him and puts both Faith and himself in peril and they must work together and trust each other if they are to survive.
This book was an easy and fun read. The writing style felt different and a little more dull than the first book in the series. I did enjoy it once I got into it a bit further into the story but it did take a little to get there. It felt forced in some areas but the world building is lovely. The characters are likable and the general storyline is fun and intriguing.
Will I reread this book? Probably not. Will I read the next book in the series? More than likely. I feel like I should see these Wallflowers and their (mis)adventures though to the end.
Thank you to Net Galley for providing me with an e copy of this book to review. Misleading the Duke, the second book in the Wallflower series was an enjoyable read but not quite what I had expected. It veered away from a more typical historical romance. Maybe more of a thriller or even mystery? Ms Fenichel did a nice job of introducing the cast of characters originally seen in book one. The plot was believable, the interaction between the main characters was fine but I was put off by the amount of violence in the book. It just seemed too much for what appeared, by the book's cover and description, to be a romance novel. I will read the next book in the series to see what happens to our lovers in the future.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a decent historical romance. Nick and Faith are set to wed but Nick is ready to withdraw his offer after he finds out Faith and her friends attempted to investigate him. While I understand the intrusion of privacy I don't understand why he would hold that against her considering they barely know each other and she should know who's she's really marrying. Of course he's a spy and full of secrets. Needless to say I was not too fond of Nick who greatly desires her but insists on not trusting her.
Of course all secrets eventually come to light and together they must go undercover to stay out of danger and solve a crime.
Overall nothing spectacular but entertaining.
I love the characters and know them from the first book but this one just lacked the spark. The first sex scene was a bit cringy to me. It was definitely not the time to be sexually active especially for a virgin and the state Nick was in. Story line was good but seemed to lag a bit in places. We didn't see as much as the Wallflowers as in the first book and Sophia and Nick weren't together too much either. I will still pick up this series with hopes that then next one gets the spark back.
Faith has been pledged by her family to marry Nick, a man she has never met, but with the sad experience of her close friend’s abusive marriage, she is reluctant to proceed. She and her friends devise a plan to permit Faith to learn her intended’s true character, but Nick, a former spy, is loath to reveal his background. Although the underlying situation is a very serious one, the narrative has its lighter moments and the characters are fully realized and engaging. This is the second book in the Wallflowers of West Lane series, following The Earl Not Taken, and while it is not essential that the books be read in order, it is definitely preferable for the fullest enjoyment of this terrific series.
Love, Love, LOVE! <3
I absolutely LOVED this book. Misleading A Duke is the second book in The Wallflowers of West Lane series, following the relationship between Faith and Nick, while the first book followed the relationship between Poppy and Rhys. I did not think it was possible for me to love the second book in this series as much as the first, but A.S. Fenichel managed to make me fall in love with her characters all over again.
I'll admit that in the first book, I didn't love Faith's character. She seemed a little stuck up and extremely stubborn with the way she acted towards Nick from their very first interaction. However, getting a look into her thoughts and mind in this book made me fall in love with her strength and loyalty to the ones she loves.
This book was a great mix of romance, mystery and humor, with some thrilling spy drama sprinkled in that had me unable to put the book down. oh and the steamy scenes had me fanning myself and wishing for a duke of my own. ;)
I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends and patrons at the library. I can't wait for the next book in this series to see whats in store for the rest of the Wallflowers of West Lane!
A-ma-zing!
A.S. Fenichel's Misleading A Duke had me so enraptured, I could not stop reading! From the very first page right on to the end. It's characters are very realistic and relatable.
The Wallflowers were completely wonderful. With their different characters and attributes, they just make you fall in love with them. The female perspective of anyone living at this time is wonderful and they are feminist too.
I love how Faith showed strength of character when she went through the first hostage situation by Joseph and his men. She was courageous and had faith in her lover.
The twists in the novel were especially intriguing. One where Faith kept resorting to trick to get Nick's attention, the other when the groundskeeper saved the day, yet another when Joseph ran off with his books at the end of the novel.
It contains the best details a good romance book should have; suspense, romance, strength of character and intrigue.
All in all, it was a beautiful book and I would definitely recommend.
This is the second book in the Wallflowers of West Lane and I'm really enjoying this series! The author jumped almost directly into a pretty dramatic series of events that I think would have felt jarring if I hadn't recently read the first book (and remembered where the characters, introduced in that novel, were in their story arc). That being said, one of my favorite parts of this series is the connections between the Wallflowers and how well the author brings them to life. Very much looking forward to Mercy's story!
I really enjoyed the prior book of this series, but the plot of this one just seemed desperate. The heroine is trying to make amends to the hero who she insulted by spying on him to prove what he had been doing. She tries to explain it that she just wanted to get to know the duke better, because they were somehow betrothed, but it isn't quite clear. The hero refuses to marry her because she doesn't trust him and had spied on him and is waiting for her to call off the wedding. This is an little confusing, because for this time period, arranged marriages are a normal instance. No one meets their spouse or knows them for long before getting married and having children. So, the heroine decides to talk to a mutual friend who kind of kidnaps the hero and they are stuck together and then the intrigue gets spotty because they have servants, but 3 of the heros spy enemies try to beat him to death and she has to rescue him. It is like I said, the story just seems a little desperate. It is a well written story and a smooth read for the most part. It is just that some if the actions taken are to make a story that doesn't make sense. I give this book a 4.5 stars and advise not to look at the logic behind the story. Just go long with the book.
As previously stated in my review of the first book in the Wallflowers of West Lane series: I want to be friends with these girls. This is one of few romances I've read that truly builds off the secondary plot from the previous book to become the main characters in the next book.
We meet Nicholas and Faith in the first book and honestly they are responsible for the characters in the first book getting together so for that we'll always be thankful. You won't be too lost if you don't read the first book, but you'll be missing out on some gorgeous details so I highly recommend you read that first.
In Misleading a Duke we see the intrigue and spycraft get kicked up a notch with a lot of drama and no small about of kidnapping and torture. Overall, Nick and Faith are both stubborn and to see them come together and realize how much they have in common and and rely on each other was such a nice difference from how we see Nick in the first book. Fenichel does a great job at making the characters of centuries ago exciting and relevant to today without making them seem ridiculous in the context of their time period.
Heroine, Faith, has always been told she is too fat. Hero, Nicholas, likes her just fine. Nicholas’s spying job gets in their way of happiness several times. He finally, after being tortured (that part was a bit gruesome), shot and endangering Faith and others several times sees the light. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Kensington books for my honest review.
This was a slow start for me but once I got into it I couldn't read fast enough. Those four girls are described so well you can picture each of them as you read. And the men in their lives...great chemistry! Can't wait for the next book!
This second Wallflower book has a much different tone to it than the first. Nick has put off Faith's inquiries about what he was doing on the Continent the past few years. She is determined to find out if he is a spy and for whose government. He is determined to thwart her. They got off on the wrong foot when he discovered she and her friends were spying on him. Her apologies won't erase her highhandedness and lack of trust. Tired of getting the cold shoulder, Faith comes up with a plan to get him away where he will have to listen to her. She succeeds but her plans go horribly awry when Nick's past catches up with him. I enjoyed the action and intrigue in this story and will happily read the next installment of this series.
I received an ARC of "Misleading the Duke" by the fabulous author A.S. Fenichel and Netgalley. Nicholas Ellsworth and Lady Faith Landon are set up to be in an arranged marriage. Nick wants not to marry Faith as she had wanted to investigate his background. Faith wants to be sure she is marrying an honorable man, and not just a handsome face. She tries various times to ask him questions to see if they will suit but he always avoids her. Faith and her friends figure out a way to force Nick's hand into being isolated where he will have no choice but to answer her queries. They then learn to accept their feelings and attraction for each other while fighting off an enemy from Nick's past.
^It is pure ignorance that leads to such hate," Faith states when she is referring to some of her fellow countrymen who disdain others who dont look like them. When I read this line, I was completely hooked and couldn't and didn't put the book down until I finished it as it related so well to today's worldwide events.
I can't say enough about how fabulous and beautiful this love story is. A. S. Fenichel is a master story teller, drawing her audience in to the scene and making is feel every emotion the character is experiencing. I can't wait to read the next installment of the Wallflowers series
Cover art is beautiful 😍 It doesn't exactly match with the action/adventure plot, but still a lovely design.
We were introduced to Faith and Nick in the fist "Wallflowers of West End" book. The wallflowers snooped into Nick's life to try and figure out what kind of man he is before he married Faith in an arranged marriage. Instead, he finds out about their snooping and is angry and wants out of the engagement.
In this book, Faith and Nick are still in engagement limbo with him wanting nothing to do with her, and her not sure of what kind of man he is. He won't speak to her b/c he's still in a big ol' huff about her wondering what kind of total stranger she's being forced to marry. BTW, he's a spy with a million shady secrets.
Anyhoo, the Wallflowers get together to hatch a plan to decide if Faith is going to marry Nick (totally ignoring the fact that he doesn't want to marry her). Since he was so angry about their lying, they decide what is needed is another scheme... Yay more lying. The book is called Misleading a Duke, so I'm not going to get crazy about compounding their poor plan with a worse one.
The plan works like a charm, but they hit a snag when three of Nick's spy frenemies show up to take everyone hostage and exact revenge/torture on Nick.
There is a lot of action and the author does a lot of telling in lieu of showing us the characters. Also, Nick and Faith's relationship comes together in a highly stressful hostage situation. Following their ordeal, they continue to misunderstand and doubt each other, almost willfully, which is slightly grating.
More intrigue, yadda yadda, HEA.
We do get a slightly better look at the other Wallflowers, Mercy and Aurora, but, these are pretty one dimensional... Also, there is some teasing of the next book in the series, which will follow poor, logical Mercy and the handsome rich Earl who is supposed to be marrying Aurora.
The ONE character of color in this book is used to forward the story, and does not get his own independent personality. Geb, an Egyptian we meet in book 1, is Nick's BFF. He is used as a barometer to set who is good vs. bad in London society (good= treat him like a person). While he admires and is kind to all the Wallflowers, the idea of him having a relationship is never discussed or hinted. I'll take a wife back home, a lost love, an affair with the hot butler -- anything! Something!
He is dark, mysterious, unfailingly kind/grateful and tolerent to bigotry or small-mindedness. I hate when authors write characters this way. I will say most of the characters are kinda flimsy, so this is not that much of a departure, but still.
If you like a lot of action, a little romance and some amazing cover art, this is for you.

I had been having a bad few days: washer quit, faucet leaking, I decided to read for a while and try to regain my sanity. All I can say is " This book hooked me from the very beginning. A heroine who is not typical at all:, practical, and willing to go toe to toe for what she thinks is rightfully hers. No shrinking violet here! The hero is handsome, .' if you like strong heroines, flawed but gorgeous heroes, and witty dialogue....this is it!
